Yes, but blue/violetgate is the new orangegate. Blue and violet show as the same on the Envy.
-
It's so evident?
I like soooo much the Shelby Mustang, but it's unaffordable to us 'cause of the taxes and gas price
(1.8€/lt doesn't marry well with a 5.9L V8 Supercharged capable of 600+HP
)
/OT
Yes at this point I'm also considering the Inspiron, but it isn't what exactly I want, especially design- and material-wise... Damn Dell... 300€ less and I've bought this baby this morning... -
If you can afford it I think XPS 15 is still a better choice, especially is you live in US for more options (but also if you don't). Maybe wait some time if the price drops a bit or if some voucher codes come out: I think I'll do this (if my country's reps finally manage to clarify what we can have in the latop)
-
Well... I had not predicted these prices myself, even knowing XPS was getting more "Premier-er" like it was in the past...
I said a lot of pages back that there was 99% chance I was going to buy Dell again, and 80% it was going to be the new XPS 15....
Well, things have changed a little because of my wrong predictions... I have not yet made my decision, still trying to lear more, but I've been looking much more at the competition now...
Some MSI laptops look really good, better specs at 500$ less, just don't really know about screen and sound quality
So if everything stays like this, up to the beginning of august (my dead line), I'd say the odds are now 60% buying dell, 30% this new XPS... (the other 30% might be an inspiron or latitude)
The only reason It's still 60%, is that I love Dell customer's service, and know I would be in good hands with their quality (my previous laptop is 6 years old, still running, but is beggining to suffer from age, being turned on 7d/7 20h/24h in average... Quite the longevity). I'm just not convinced that customer service is worth 500$.
And the only reason I'm still considering XPS, it's because I'm certain I can get the price down somewhat with my EPP number and the few vouchers / GC availables -
HP Envy. You can get a way more powerful computer for $1100. There's a $400 off coupon right now.
Yeah this is definitely another great alternative. -
First thing I though when I read "reliant robin", haha but actually my friends dad is getting a Shelby GT500 so hopefully I'll be able to hop along for a ride.
All in all it was a good analogy but for me either way I was gonna spend 1500 on a laptop so an extra hundred that I'll have to pay seems worth it for the stated reasons. -
Haha, okay, sure.
How can you say this when ALL the competitors' laptops are significantly less, often times for more powerful laptops?
This is what I'm hearing, but can't you just reinstall a fresh copy of Windows? -
I considered it... Then realized the latest Envy model isn't even available in Canada
Bought the following yesterday:
- Core i5-3210M
- Windows 7 Home Premium, 64bit, English
- 8GB3 DDR3 SDRAM at 1600MHz
- 750GB 7200rpm HDD with 32GB mSATA
- 8X Slot Load CD/DVD Burner (Dual Layer DVD+/-R Drive)
- NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M with 1GB GDDR5 VRAM
- 3yr Warranty with accidental
I was able to get them down $100, but that's it. Multiple reps wouldn't budge on the student discount/Xbox here in Canada.
I didn't wait for coupons as it is for my brother and he needs it quick and parents are the one's buying it as its a grad present. Went with the new XPS15 as he likes the looks of Macbooks.
He was using my old HP dv6335CA seen in my signature so I think he'll enjoy the upgrade
-
That sucks! Seems like the US is the only place it's available so far, amazingly enough.
-
Asus has a very good alternative to this as well and MUCH cheaper.
-
I don't like HP. And I tend to shy away from AMD products. I think I may just hold out for a couple weeks for a coupon code for the XPS, since with the current feelings, I feel like it may not be impossible.
Those are my same choices. But since I'm not in any rush, I'll wait a bit. -
sorry but never had much luck with asus laptops, they just feel cheap and flimsy.
it really depends on the HP products you buy, i have never gone wrong with an HP elitebook or Probook. -
True, it's on my list to look for... But I'm lazy, and their website is very bad when you want to compare products... You have to visit the 100+ laptops one by one, to finally know the basic feature, to add them to their comparison list before getting the bigger picture!
So yes I was gonna look at them too, but since I'm lazy, and I procastinate, it's the last one on my list to look, when I'll have no other place to look but this one in order to declare my search complete
-
FWIW, a friend of mine has the Sony S15 and absolutely loves it. Upgrading is super easy, it's fast, thin, good screen. It's not for me because of the numberpad and left-aligned touchpad, but it is an absolute steal compared to the XPS 15. Plus, right now with coupons you can get it down to around 900, INCLUDING a free PS Vita or PS3.
-
Looks great, but a little disapointed with graphics 640m LE is too low for me! Won't be enough in my "main" computer for the years to come
-
Even when it finally gets released in Canada, they way things go with HP computers up here is that it'll only be available in stores. No online customization for us Canadians for HP's main stuff. I can only imagine how their support will be up here (haven't tried it though so it might be good, just not that optimistic).
I have looked at the S15, but really don't like the shifted keyboard and the numpad, but I suppose that's something I could get used to. Once anandtech/notebookcheck reviews come out for all these main competitors I'll be able to make my decision.
Which ASUS are people talking about as the competition? -
Cons, unfortunately, about Sony S15:
1) Orangegate (reds are orange on display) --> Major issue
2) 4GB soldered, max ram 12 GB -->minor issue even if i ask my self if dual channel will work with 4gb paired with a 8gb.
3) GT640m LE --> minor or major issue, depends on personal pc usage.

The Asus N56:

Great, I was just about to order online and now it says they don't take orders except over the phone?
-
I think over the phone is the way to go, much easier to get discounts and money off of it.
-
max 8GB RAM, GT550m DDR3, 6 cells battery, no better audio..I don't know if there is any difference between i7-3610QM and i7-3612QM, but it seems they're not so similar specs overall...
-
I don't remember who said it originally... But when shopping for a laptop, there's always one feature missing, or something you don't need and too expensive!
In this case, it's too find where to buy a prebuilt one with all the features we want (Found one for this Asus, but not so cheap either)
+ I would have liked an option for SSD or HDD + mSATA
If only other manufacturer understood what we want in our laptop as well as Dell, I'm sure they would win me over. Because as it stands now, the Dell @ 1600$ is exactly what I would configure, event if there were configuration options available! if only it wasn't so pricey!
-
Yeah the guy is going to call me. He said he would match the 10% voucher I have. Also want to get free accidental damage for the year, which I think should be default for a glass screen laptop! Seems there will be some better configuration options!
-
Not impressed by Dell. I ordered the XPS 15 which was a fast ship model (no customization) and whilst I appreciate they cannot guarantee it is delivered within 2 days I am now being told it will be 3 weeks!
I doubt I would have bought it if it was not listed as a fast ship model
-
Bill, sent you a PM thru Dell community for some help with a bungled XPS order.
Thanks. -
@Risco Are those the customization options they're going to be releasing? Or just overall options?
-
My apologies I believe this is the refreshed Asus:

Had to go to xoticpc since you cannot navigate for s**t on Asus' website... -
Open Letter to Michael Dell
Michael,
I have several clients who have been patiently waiting for the new XPS 15 to be unveiled. These clients tend to purchase Apple products but they were willing to consider Dell for three reasons:
1. Apple's lack of support for burning blu-ray disks.
2. SSD options at a reasonable price.
3. The promise of a new thin, fast, laptop built out of high quality materials.
Much to their disappointment, this morning they discovered that the new XPS 15 did not have the ability to burn a high definition disk, nor did US customers have access to a pure SSD option.
A 5400 rpm hard drive will not cut it for composing and editing high resolution photos and videos. Furthermore, low resolution dvd output is unacceptable in the age of high definition digital video cameras.
The Dell XPS 15 is advertised as the machine for content creation. Content creators want to make blu-ray disks, not just watch them. A premium laptop should offer not only premium design but premium performance.
Unless, Dell decides to offer a pure ssd option with a blu-ray burner these clients see no benefit of going with Dell over Apple. -
I had the same thing where yesterday it said it would ship today, I ordered it and then my order status says estimated delivery is 7/10. What is up with that? I read a few other people in this thread complain of the same thing.
-
I've been trying to decide between the Dell XPS 15 and the Vizio CN15-A0 so I made a little chart comparing some of the main features in case anyone else is considering both of these as well:
The Dell definitely wins in the specs department but strictly in terms of product-for-price, the Vizio makes more sense to me. My main concern however is about warranty and support. I love that Dell has all the service/repair manuals and driver downloads on its website. Vizio is definitely lacking in that respect, and any damage caused by user modifications voids the warranty. But Vizio also offers a two year warranty, vs. one year for Dell.
Tough decision. -
Easy, customer service and the ability to open with fear of warranty void is important to you clearly. So you really answered your own question, Dell.
-
It's the same you linked before
-
This computer is a valiant attempt by Asus. It's still way too meaty for my tastes. The new XPS 15 is far better in terms of design. I'll never forget the feeling of disappointment after first seeing the top of that laptop and then from the side on xotic PC. Don't you like how Asus' own website they don't even show you the side angle? Very disingenuous on their part. Are there any reviews up for this one? How easy is it to swap internals?
-
Oh good now I have the option to buy with a dual core CPU
-
I think it has been said that the shipping date on the email notification is inaccurate but I spoke to a Dell rep and he said the XPS 15 is not available as fast ship (it was clearly labelled as fast ship on the website). Anyway, they are going to phone me back about it.
-
It's actually getting great reviews. There are a few on Notebookcheck and a few YT vids.

Yeah, the Asus website is horrible for shoppers!
Nice laptopt indeed, but not much cheaper than Dell when using similar specs... If I were to add shipping, border duties, taxes, it would probably cost more in the end! -
Vizio requires you to send the PC to them at your expense, then they ship it back. Dell has next business day onsite. In addition, Dell includes accidental damage protection for the 1st year as well. Just saying...
N -
Hmm my rep on the phone told me it would ship this week despite what my confirmation email said.
-
You were able to get the 200 dollar discount taken off your purchase price instead of getting a gift card right?
-
If the bottom level XPS 15 i7 was priced at $1200 to compete with the Asus N56 and the HP Envy (who still have better specs), I'd probably own one right now simply because I like the design. $1700...lol.
-
- There is an SSD option. But if you want one that bad, then go buy one. It will probably be cheaper that way anyways.
- If you don't want a 5400 rpm HDD, then buy the 7200rpm(you do have the option). It is cheaper on the 15 anyways.
- If you want to write to blu ray, then buy a blu ray disk writer.
Why make such non-issues, issues. I have been reading people complain about the 5400 rpm drive. The easy solution to your problem is: Don't buy the 5400 rpm drive. It comes on the more expensive machine anyway. - There is an SSD option. But if you want one that bad, then go buy one. It will probably be cheaper that way anyways.
-
I don't consider a lot of the laptops listed in this thread to be their competitors. I think Dell is specifically targeting the Mac Book Pro type buyer, not someone who wants raw horsepower. They are targeting someone who wants a quick machine that can game a little, and it looks good.
If you want pure CPU, go precision, if you want pure GPU, go Alienware, if you want cheap CPU and GPU go inpsiron, if you want pretty with decent CPU and GPU there is your XPS.
Nah, I got a 100 dollar discount, 80 dollars in gift cards back (Dell Advantage) which will be used on another laptop soon anyway, and I had purchased two 400 dollar gift cards during the buy one get one sale, so I had 150 in gift cards I received as a bonus. -
If the bottom bottom level i7 were $1200, it would still have worse specs than a $1200 envy... BS. But for laughs and giggles, I created a 1200 dollar envy.

And you expect Dell to sell their machine for 1200? -
For the people that would've liked to have a single 256GB SSD. I've spoken to a dell rep who told me it was possible when ordered over the phone. But it seems that would be a 500GB HDD + 256 msata SSD and would be more expensive than the model with the single 512GB SSD (though i'm not totally sure the rep calculated that right, she just added the price for the 500GB + 256 msata to the price of the highest HDD config).
Also it's not possible to order a model without GPU if there is no such model in your country (although the site states the GPU is optional
).
-
Has the UK XPS15 been pulled?? did i miss that post
-
Maybe they meant "optional" as in "If you were to accidently rip it off from the motherboard, it'll still work"
Just goodluck ripping it off in cold, without removing the solder first , and not damaging the motherboard
-
I configured one with 1080p ips display, 3610qm i7 processor, everything else stock for $1354.99.... an i7 XPS 15 cost $1699. I really wish they would make the price more reasonable but this is getting very off-topic.
-
They said there is system issues. I am really annoyed as had a 10% discount voucher which ironically runs out today. I will not buy one on principle unless they match this.
-
i was on the chat thing myself there and also pointed out the voucher expiration! suspicious
