    I have damaged my V5 screen :(

Can you believe it when unplugging the HDMI cable the connector sprung up and struck the screen damaging it. Now I have 2 annoying black blobs where the screen is dented in.

    I pulled the trigger and ordered a B173HW01 v.4 for my L702X. I have a few questions:
    1) Do I need to install any additional drivers? Seeing mixed opinions on that here with the L702x.
    2) Im unclear about how the webcam part is done. Are there any detailed pics how this is connected.

Sorry for the questions but I don't want to break my new baby!

Oh yeah.. im going from the 900p stock panel to this.

    1) no drivers needed.
    2) just remove the connector. i tried to remove the complete webcam, but this is not necessary :)

Post calibration color gamut is perfect on the CMO, color temperature is now 65k, gamma is 2.2, contrat is 1150:1.

Viewing angle are good. But even if only average, i prefer double the contrast 85% of the time than half the contrast 100% of the time.

did anyone tested the auo as you tested the cmo? would be interesting which results the auo obtains.

Well the AUO matte only has 72% of NTSC and the glare 90%.
    Versus 100%...
AUO have detailed meadurements for all their display versions unlike CMO so they can be trusted
would be nice to find confirmation of contrast though, as uncalibrated contrast can be very diffent from contrast at the right volor temperatue...

So, basically we have two good screens we can use, the CMO and the AUO.

Makes it hard to chose. :(

Having upgraded my desktop monitor to a Samsung series9 23" 120hz PC monitor, which has the best colours/contrast I have ever seen on a TN panel (and i think most TN panels are just pure horrible, coming from monitors like Dell 2711 (best colours) and Benq EW2420 (highest contrast monitor on the market, of 3300 measured)), i am sort of tempted to 'upgrade' my beautiful AUO V4 on my 1749 to a 120hz / 3D capable panel...cos things are just so much smoother on 120hz...

Anyways, im wondering if any of the 3d/120hz panels mentioned have decent contrast/blacks/viewing angles...worthy of sparta, to upgrade over my AUO V4. If any of them perform anywhere near the V4 then im sold. But if its a simple case of comprimise this + that for 120hz then...no go.

So, any measurements on the 120hz panels please? Im mainly after deep blacks, followed by contrast, followed by viewing angles and then colours. Dont get me wrong, im REALLY enjoying the colours on my V4...its just oozing with beautiful colours...but deep down under im really a deep black freak... who gets annoyed by slight hint of greys...also i would trade my sister for a 17.3" OLED 1080p panel!

So, any input on the 120hz/3D panels measurements please?

    Cheers.

Looks good. However do you find 280cd/m² to be a little low at 100%?

I thinkered with the L702x 120Hz screen and it is very nice CLICK HERE. LG got it right with this higher-end panel. I like it so much, I had to upgrade all my comptible Dells to this panel. The only obsticle is getting the true 2ms TP-A1 panel, which required me to go through a bunch of hoops at Dell and even then the cost for the "LCD service kit" was over $400/ea.

At any rate, like with 1080p; once you go 120Hz and exeperience the smooth refresh rate, there is no going back... :D

By the way, I have an extra Dell LCD service kit (new/unused) with the true and proper LP173WF2 (TP)(A1) plus the 120Hz ready Dell LVDS cable, Nvidia 3D IR emitter, and new LCD mounting hindges. I will offer to anyone who wants it for a price that would help recover some of the cost. :)

    Hi Scott

The 3D screen has been tested with 750:1 contrast and gamut close to sRGB (but less close to NTSC):

Review Asus G74SX-3DE Gaming Notebook - Notebookcheck.net Reviews

But more interesting would be the color temperature at this contrast, or the contrast at 65K color temperature and a visual representation against the HD standard or NTSC.

I will likely test that screen myself and measure calibrated contrast + color gamut. As you know I was very impressed with the CMO display. I have already seen the 3D display live and remember it to be less accurate colorwise compared to the CMO. Also compared to the AUO on the Dell XPS 15 702, I found the contrast inferior and chromaticity to be less accurate (by eye).

I just emailed a representative about whether I can be confident that I will receive the exact screen specified. Here is the conversation:

    Hi Sir

Not sure what model of screen is fitted inside your laptop, might be exact may be another model. Same screens here in use that the manufacturers use the model numbers change regularly.

    Best

    Nick Christou

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Thanks.

What I am really trying to ask is when I order the GLOSS 513404 AU OPTRONICS B173HW01 V.5 17.3, can I be confident that this is the screen that I will be receiving?

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

    No sir

    Read this

    Nick Christou

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

So what you're saying is that if I order the AU OPTRONICS B173HW01 V.5 17.3, there's a chance that I may, for example, receive a AVENTEC 1000 AV1050 10.1 REPLACEMENT SCREEN? Is this what you are saying?

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

Like everybody, including the laptop manufacturer, we buy what is available to spec at the time. You might get

    Auo B1173HW01 V.0 OR V.1

Or a Samsung screen for example or perhaps Chunghwa (used in Sony).

However the replacement will be as good or better than the original.

The link I sent explains why we operate like this.

Let'S see how good the matte CMO is. Might be the winner if the Glossy version already wins, there is no reason why those qualities should not translate to the matte version...

There is also a matte version of the 120Hz LGD screen found on the Asus G74.

But it doesn't matter, CMO1726 is the way to go for best contrast and chromaticity. Exists in both Matte and Glossy as well.

i know that the 2D fhd in xps17 is matte. The 3D fhd is glossy and the hd+ too!

heared that the dell matte screen isnt good at viewing angles and contrast.

btw. are the cmo´s also RGB-LED Screens as the AUO´s are? Interesting for Battery Life!

Summary of screens on Dell and Asus G74:

    Dell
    1. 3D Glossy Display: LGD02C5 (Asus-Modell G74SX-91079V) and 90% of NTSC-Gamut:
    2. 2D Matte: CMO1720 / N173HGE-L11 (supposedly, waiting for confirmation from actual Dell owner)

    Asus
Asus have the opposite Strategy: Matte on 3D and glossy non 3D.
    1. 3D Matte Display: LGD02C5 (Asus-Modell G74-3D, G74SX-91079V) and 90% of NTSC-Gamut
    2. Glare TFT Display: CMO1726 mit einem 1100:1 contrast and 100% of NTSC-Gamut (Asus-Models G74-A1, G74SX-TZ024V und G74SX-TZ078V)
    3. Glare LED Display: Hardware ID fehlt (Asus-Models G74SX-TZ097V, G74SX-TZ025V und Asus G74SX-TZ054V)

Dell 2D Matte is CMO1720 which is supposed to be either N173HGE-L11 or L21. My matte L21 screen is coming in two days time, so will let you know which one it is.

    Are you sure about this?

L21 is CMO1726, so if you are sure that the hardware ID is N173HGE-L11, then this must be the L11...

OK..So I got my order from screencountry.com today. I knew it was going to be a compatable screen and not the actual V4 that I "ordered". I didn't mind that b/c I just want the "real estate" of the 1080p. I'm not doing photo editing or anything professional with video.

What arrived was the CHI MEI N173HGE - L21 Rev. C1

The install was fairly easy. Getting the bezel off what what I was most worried about but that was the least painful of the process.

After the bezel was off, I popped out the webcam cable, easy enough. Undid the screws and slowly brought the screen down. I immediately noticed that there was some "booger" glue holding the ribbon cable not only in the webcam breakout, but also all over the main cable. I was REALLY nervous at the force I had to use to pry it off the back of the old monitor (which was an LG 900p btw).
I had zero problems taking everything else off/apart.

    Now the fun....

Having never installed a screen, I found it difficult to put the connector back in to the new panel, but eventually got it. The REALLY hard part for me was putting the webcam cable back in. WOW.. talk about a tight space! I broke an actual sweat doing that.
Got everything in place and used two screws to secure the monitor in position, plugged up the power (without battery in) and what do I hear???

BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP

    8 Beeps.

Imediately I thing "I'm screwed... I ruined the ribbon pulling off that goop." I took the screws back out and closely examined the ribbon connector. I applied a tad more force and I heard it "snap" into place. WHEW! I knew immediately that was the problem. I was being way to sensitive with the components.

I powered everything alll up and WOW. WOW WOW WOW!

Talk about a difference! The xps 17 NEEDS a 1080p. Thats all I can say. It is SUPER bright. The colors look good to me. Im a noob with color calibration so I don't even know if I will mess with it to be honest. Who knows.

Anyway.. the screen looks great. I'm happy!

OH YEAH... for a limited time if you order from these guys and put up a youtube video of your installation they will credit you back 20.00
I didn't do this because I knew I didn't know what I was doing, but for some of you that may be a NICE discount. I got the panel in 3 days from Canada to Virginia.

A BIG THANKS TO ALL IN THE FORUM! I would have never even attempted to do this if I hadn't stumbled upon this guide. Ive built several of my own PCs but never tinkered with laptops other than throwing in a hard drive. Thanks again folks!

    Cheimei CMO1726 for the win...

The stock color profile and grey balance with it are not perfect, but after calibration, you obtain truly amazing results (1100:1 contrast).

These are the non calibrated results:

The AUO B173WH01 V.4 glossy screen comes in 2 versions:

AUO B173WH01 V.4 0A (as far as i know, this i directly made for Dells)
    AUO B173WH01 V.4 1A

Versions 0A and 1A, what are the differences, if there is any!
Do any of you know if both of these panels can be used in other laptops with 17,3" inch fitting... for example Sager Notebooks!

I have a Clevo P170HM, and a Dell XPS. But i like my Clevo laptop the most, and its a lot faster, will the AUO B173WH01 V.4 0A be able to work in the Clevo! or can it identify that its not installed into a Dell computer and then not work :)

Not hard with the proper testing device.
Without colour measurement device, you can only do by eye, which is less qualitative and harder.

I received my screen today and installed it in on my l702x.
    I ordered an N173HGE-L21 matte but laptopscreen.com
sent me an N173HGE-L11 matte. Anyways, it's CMO1720.
Same as the dell stock matte FHD screen. It's a decent
screen and with the calibration profile by ahains, colours
are pretty nice. Matte coating on this screen is quite
comparable to my dell 3008wfp. One happy customer. :)

    REVIEW Matte AUO RGB-LED Screen (B173HW01 V5)

    pros:
    +++ superior viewing angles
    +++ nearly no reflections
    ++ great colors
    ++ good contrast
    ++ brightness
++ RGB-LED instead of WLED or normal LCD

    cons:
    - white is not really white (known disadvantage of all matte screens)
    - calibration necessary (profile can be found here)
    - manufactured in 2009

    [Cellphone fotos]
first foto with multi LED table lamp from the left. right you can not see any reflection (matte)
second foto with flash. Also here no reflections.

I dont deny that the glossy screens are better in contrast and often color displaying, but personally i prefer the mattes.
Recently i where outside with the XPS and got bright sunshine from the back. In comparison to the Dell glossy hd+ its just a blessing to obtain a matte screen.

About the "fight" between the mentioned CMOs and AUOs: Just select the screen you prefer. These are all great screens with little differences between them.
If you have the money dont lag and throw those cheap HD+ screen out of your XPS :)

    ps.:
maybe we (puremind + bomoogo) measure the v5 professionally.

Would be happy to measure and calibrate. Tell me a date for Berlin. ;-)

I am quite curious about how it behaves against the CMO.

I ordered the auo b173hw01 v4 screen and the company sent the HannStar HSD173PUW1-A01 screen instead. I already complained to paypal and stop payment on the screen. That is nice about Paypal as soon as you dispute the item they place a hold on the payment until the item is resolved. I rather have the AUO screen which I heard is better than the HannStar is this true? Has anyone else have this screen?

I would suggest you buy it from the Taiwan dealer like everyone has done on this forum :) they are likely the only remaining company that will send you the "right true B173HW01 V.4" screen

19 out of 20 sellers on ebay sell you wrong panels, "compatible" ones, but not the true one! and a lot of companies sell the "compatible" but fake ones aswell!
