Seems there is some confusion on the forum whether the V5 has same gamut as V4. And you suggest V5 has true RGB, rather than B+RG of the V4 (which is marketing spiel for WLED). Would be interesting to know the truth either way.

V5 is a fantastic display though, makes the laptop a joy to use.

Please note that Aliexpress.com is a collection site where thousands of exporters and importers can advertise. What I am trying to point out is that you can not make any judgement from just the Aliexpress.com web domain name when trying to compare notes on how successful you were in placing orders. For Aliexpress you need to compare on the specific seller.

    Hi all!
I'm new in this forum and this is my first post... I'm Italian and I don't speak English very well, so don't notice my errors... :)
I have a Dell XPS 17 (L702X) with the standard monitor and I want to replace it with a better one...
In an Italian forum I see two models that seems to be perfectly for me:
    - B173HW01 V5 (Resellers I see are this, this and this)

    - B173HW01 V4 (Resellers I see are this and this)

This thread is really complete and I would ask which is better in your mind... :)

I had a Dell Inspiron 9400 that I disassembled completely for a thermal paste refresh; so I think I should not have problem in mounting it... :D

P.S.: You can see my PC configuration watching my profile...

Did you miss the past on the CMO screen? If you don't mind glare or matte, then the CMO1726 is best.
    Max brightness: 283 cd/m²
    Average Brightness: 267 cd/m²
    Black Level: 0.24 cd/m²
    Contrast: 1110:1
    100% of NTSC.

The Matte CMO1720 is not as good but still better than the matte AUO counterpart, it was reported with the following values (e.g. this is the display of that the MSI MSI GT780R, many laptop reviewers have tested this display):
    Max brightness: 278 cd/m²
    Average Brightness: 258.3 cd/m²
    Black Level: 0.3 cd/m²
    Contrast: 887:1
    80% of NTSC.

    Currently the front runner is:
    - CMO1726 followed by B173HW01 V4 if you like Glare or
    - CMO1720 followed by B173HW01 V5 if you like Matte Displays

The CMO displays somehow have better contrast and gamut. But I will also be testing the AUO display soon myself to verify that they are indeed as average as the manufacturer indicates, as I haven't seen an actual review from a laptop review web site yet!

So Chi Mei 1720 and 1726 are better than AUO displays? Some Italian Dell users report that CMO1720 is installed by Dell if you choose FDH 2D when ordering XPS17; the other screen you can find is a LGD02DA ...
Matte Displays have no reflections but less brilliant colour that Glare, right?

CMO1720. The measurements I have given you for the CMO screens can be read in many laptop tests. I hav personally tested the CMO1726 and was able to confirm the tests.

I am thinking about getting 5-10 of the proven AUO B173HW01 v.4 (Dell Part# X919N) panels from the factory in Taiwan as I still feel they are the best overall panels if you're looking for a glossy screen. It simply works (plug and play with the factory LVDS cable) and looks the best in the following laptops I have tested to date:
    Dell L701x
    Dell L702x
    Sager NP8170
    Asus G73

I also just looked inside my new Dell Precision M6600 display assembly and it appears Dell is using the AUO B173HW01 v.5 for the matte panel on those systems. It is nice for being matte, but I find glossy better for my specific picture and video uses so I will probably be swapping that panel out as well.

So, if anyone is interested in doing a group buy of the AUO v.4 panels, let me know. I am based in California and would be shipping from here once the panels are received. All forms of payment will be accepted.

Scott, do you have the possibility of measuring the AUO's?
Have you now had a chancwe to test the CMO as you intended?

This probably has to do with the white balance. The glare version has too much blue but the calibrated version is brilliant.

I should be able to send a color profile for your screen when I am back home (tomorrow).

That would be much appreciated, I think it may actually be the finish on the screen that make whites look dirty but worth a try.

    Thanks

I'm very indecided on which screen choose: CMO1720 or B173HW01 V5? I found lot of resellers but i have a feedback only for the one used by an Italian user for the purchese of a B173HW01 V5... I have an address in Miami for shipping... Could someone advise me a good reseller?
The last question: I find the profile colour for B173HW01 V5 in this forum, is there the one for CMO1720? I know that a profile colour si very important using a matte display... Google didn't help me...

Sorry for my awful English... And for my noobyness... :)

At this time, no... Regardless, my 18 years of electronic hardware design experience steers me to what *I* like most...and that is the AUO offerings for now.

I was looking at getting the CMO (the 21) yesterday, but I just can't get past some of the "expressed" specs vs. the established factory specs. I did have a CMO (the 11) in one of my Sager's and it has was "OK". There were a few dead pixels and the screen just didn't look as good (color wise) as the AUO did to me. So, I did the screen swap with an AUO v.4.

By the way, Dell is now using the B173HW01 v.5 (matte) in their high-end Precision M6600 and this replaces the B173HW01 v.4 (glossy) that they offered last year under part # X919N. For my specific uses in design, photography and video, I seem to like glossy screens better so I will probably take the v.5 out of the M6600 and swap it with the v.4 when my panel shipment arrives next week.

Do you have a source to manufacturing specs for the CMO1726 v21 revision C01? All I have seen is a generic spec for the v11/v21, which is too vague.

How can you make an informed decision without knowing those specs? I have measured the glare CMO with a professional grade spectroradiometer, I think you can trust me...? These measurements have been confirmed by the second most reputed laptop testing web site on the net at the moment (after notebookcheck.com): notebookjournal

Don't you feel bad knowing that you may not be ordering the best model? Maybe at least wait until I have tested the v4 AUO?

Please allow me to clarify -

    - Yes, I have relevant contacts in Hong Kong as I use to live and work there. I can look into getting the more detailed specs, but the ones that are listed on the CMO and a few other Asian web sites are pretty consistent and reliable.

    - With all due respect, I trust my experiences and what I prefer to work with when it comes to technology. I am very picky about my display panels and know what I like and what I do not regardless of what some reports show. Additionally, a factory rated 500:1 consumer grade panel with a factory rated 72% color gamut showing 1000:1 with a 100% gamut in third party tests raises a red flag in my book. I have been both a business owner and electronics designer for over 18 years now and no sub-$500 panel is "that" good. Regardless, that is just my opinion so please do not take anything I say in a negative light. Again, it is just my professional position on the subject.

    - I went ahead looked through my 2011 product testing files and found the Dell 702x non-3D system I tested a few months ago did in fact have the CMO L11 panel in it. I have attached a pic below for your review. This matte screen was terrible in my opinion due to the excessive AG finish on the screen being very distracting. In the end, I rejected the screen because of its overall lack of color and usability (for my use).

Lastly, I have listed the Dell systems in 2011 I have tested so far and the panels in them. I feel adequately informed and have decided the AUO v.4 is the best sub-$200 bet at this time. Maybe in the future my position will change when some newer worthwhile panels start popping up.

    Hello all,

Another 2 thumbs-up here for the AU Optronics B173HW01 V.5, which I installed a couple of weeks ago.

FYI, here's a chart comparing published specs for AUO vs CMO. The LG was my original panel.

would be interested in the AUO v4 screen... I live in the UK though, would obviously be willing to pay upfront for delivery etc. Although I'm sure it'll be a bit pricey I'd rather pay a bit more to import it from you than the possibility of a "compatible screen"

have been following these forums for a while, have an l702x with 2820QM, 8gb ram and gt555m... I just didn't want the 3D screen at the time due to the lack of optimus associated with it... and that was the only option for a FHD screen :-/

let me know... will also mail this response to you (if I can... lack of rep etc)

    cheers!

All the panels will be v.4 and are already in the air to Cali.

I may remove the new v.5 in my M6600 to install a v.4 so if I do that, I will make the v.5 available. It is direct from Dell and is 100% A+. I just prefer the glossy finish.

Anyone looking for the V.4 for £50 with free delivery needs to be quick as there is only one left:

    DELL STUDIO 17 B173HW01 17.3" FULL HD LED SCREEN X919N | eBay

Mine arrived today and I've fitted it to a MSI CX705MX and it's so much better than the LG screen it replaced.

Thanks to everyone contributing to this thread. It helped me make up my mind to upgrade my laptop and it's so much nicer having full HD and I love the 90% gamut!

First batch of TRUE v.4 panels arrived today from my contact in Taiwan and they even have the Dell PN stickers on them. :D
...now to test them to ensure A+ condition...

I have (3) B173HW01 v.4 panels left out of the (10) received and tested yesteday. These panels are A, not A+. All have no more than one dead/stuck pixel and all are near the perimeter of each unit. Many people would not even notice any unless looking very closely since the pixel pitch is so small. I just want to be up front about it.

With that said, I will offer these last (3) B173HW01 v.4 panels for $125 each or $340 for all of them. Shipping from California is additional and offered at actual cost.

I ordered a B173HW01 v.4 panel from Scott_RC-TEK, I was able to pay with paypal and the transaction was done in a matter of minutes. Scott shipped my panel the next day and it arrived today in perfect condition.

I have never installed a panel before but after reading this thread I felt semi confident I could do it. My biggest fear was removing the bezel, when all was said and done it wasn't nearly as bad as I had envisioned. I used the credit card method and it made it much easier than I thought and I didn't break any tabs doing it.

I got an uneasy feeling while peeling the cable off the back of the screen, the gorilla snot they use really sticks! I got the panel installed with no problems in about 35 minutes (I took my time and did it right).

All I can say is it looks Awesome! If you're considering a display swap do it, you'll be happy you did.

I highly recommend using Scott if you're planning on a AUO screen, our transaction was painless (for me anyways :D ) and he delivered exactly as promised.

Thanks to those who posted instructions in this thread and to Scott for his guidance and providing me with a True v. 4 AUO panel in A+ condition.

Thanks again Scott I appreciate what you did for me.

My XPS is on its way and I want to upgrade to the glossy FHD display.
I cant locate your email address on your profile.

    Thanks

been looking at the l502x "replacing screen" thread...

seems if they're going from the 900p to the 1080p they need a new cable...

on the l702x will i need to replace the cable going from the 900p to the 1080p or will the existing one be fine?

    cheers

No need for a new cable the existing one works, I just did mine and had no issues.
