What are the exact symptoms you are talking about. I just tested the earphones and they seemed to work fine. When i turned the volume all the way down i heard nothing through the headphone so i suspect the problem is on your end.

Im using the Sound Driver posted by Kanadianniceman, its the same one as for the M1330 on Windows XP and i don't hear any sound after the volume is turned down on my ear phones, not even mouse clicks. And yes my windows sound is on.

    Here is the link again:
    http://ftp.us.dell.com/audio/R171789.exe

Try it and please post your results.

I used the audio from this thread. I'm not sure if it was from the first set of XP driver links or from Ubnyan's pack. I don't know what you're talking about "mouse click" sound. My laptop doesn't make a sound when you click the mouse under any circumstances. My audio seems to work perfectly.

I'm dual booting xp and vista right now and it was pretty easy to do. I just googled it and came up with a bunch of guides. Here's one:
    http://apcmag.com/5485/dualbooting_vista_and_xp
You basically just shrink your vista partition and install xp on a new partition. Install all the drivers from this thread. Then repair your vista installation. You'll need a program like EasyBCD to manage your boot stuff. I'm no expert but I didn't really have any problems.

Hello. I'm having some problem with the webcam driver as I can not install it. When I run the setup.exe it will show me an error message that the driver setup could not be completed. After that the computer wants to do a reboot...
Any ideas on that? I'm using the drivers from this thread...

edit: ok, solved the issue by installing the driver manually and after that running setup.exe again.

Here's a very brief, and undetailed, post about my XPS M1530 and how I got all the drivers to work on it without having to do any kind of modification. Here's the specs on my XPS.

    Dell XPS M1530 Notebook
    Intel Core 2 Duo T7800
    4 GB of RAM
256 MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT
    160 GB Hard Drive
    Intel 4965AGN Wireless
    Sigmatel Sound
    Marvell Yukon Ethernet
    Dell 355 Bluetooth
    Integrated Webcam

If you have a configuration like mine, here's the files you *MUST* download and have ready to go for after you finish a new XP Home install. *DO NOT* waste your time with XP Pro x64; there simply is not any driver support for that OS. I've compiled the file names of the files you need to have along with links to the more hard-to-find sites. This should give you all a good start.

    1. Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 from the Microsoft website.

    2. Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility from the Intel website:
    FILE NAME: infinst_autol.exe

    3. Intel AHCI drivers from the Intel website:
    FILE NAME: iata78_enu.exe

    4. IEEE Bus Host software from the Dell website:
    FILE NAME: R166188.exe

    5. NVIDIA GeForce drivers from the Dell website:
    FILE NAME: R168180.exe

    6. Intel 4965AGN wireless drivers from the Dell website:
    FILE NAME: R172348.exe

    7. Marvell Yukon ethernet drivers from the Marvell website:
    FILE NAME: yk51x86_v10.51.3.3.zip
    LINK: http://www.marvell.com/drivers/driverDisplay.do?dId=103

    8. Bluetooth drivers from the Dell website:
    FILE NAME: R140135.exe

    9. Sigmatel audio drivers from the Dell website:
    FILE NAME: R171789.exe

    10. Touchpad drivers from the Dell website:
    FILE NAME: R155586.exe

    11. UPEK touchstrip reader from the UPEK website:
    FILE NAME: 2.8_package.zip
    LINK: http://www.upek.com/support/downloads/drivers/windows.asp

    12. Dell QuickSet software from the Dell website:
    FILE NAME: R165094.exe

    13. Integrated webcam driver from the Dell website:
    FILE NAME: R165116.exe

Now here are the steps to install Windows XP Home onto your new M1530:

    1. At the DELL startup screen, press F12 and go into your bios. From there, you need to disable your Flash Module and then change from AHCI to ATA. Save and exit.

    2. At the DELL startup screen again, press F12 and boot from your XP Home CD. Delete all the partitions and proceed with the install as usual.

    3. After the install is complete, install Service Pack 2; this may result in Windows requesting for reboots on multiple occasions. Do as it tells you.

    4. When that is complete, run the Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility. Reboot.

    5. Here is the tricky part: getting the AHCI driver working. This posed a lot of problems for some folks, but "kent1146" found the solution. Follow the instructions that he posted on this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=164159

    6. Install items 4-7.

    7. Installing Bluetooth by using the setup program will not work. Instead, go into your Device Manager and where it cannot detect the device, use the manual update driver function. Browse to the folder that you decompressed your Bluetooth drivers in and there Windows will find the appropriate drivers.

    8. Install items 9-12.

    9. You have to do the same thing with the integrated webcam driver as you did with Bluetooth. Very straightforward, really, but the Dell webcam software probably will not detect your webcam, even though Windows and other software will recognize it. I'm still working on this issue.

For those of you who bought Sound Blaster Audigy software, good luck with that. That seems to work only with Vista and I cannot get it to work with XP. If anybody has a workaround for this, please let me know.

AND WALLAH! If you have the same configuation as me, your computer should now have all the drivers it needs to function properly. With this, I got a 3DMark05 score of almost 9000, so I'm very happy, as is my computer.

    Hope this helps!

Alright, I figured out how to make the Dell webcam software recognize the camera. Do the step above just like I said, but after you do that, run the R165116.exe again and this time it will work and will install the proper drivers. Now the Dell webcam software will recognize the camera.

    Hope this helps!

... I'm dead in the water on the Audigy issue, though. Any help is MUCH appreciated!

You know, I haven't played around with Media Direct as I don't see any need for it. Your computer does not need it to function.

Have you tried installing it to see if it would work? Look for an XP version on the Dell website.

Try going into the Device Manager and manually pointing it with the Update Driver function to the directory that you unzipped the drivers to. What error does it give you? Have you tried R171789.exe from the Dell website?

Sorry, the drivers posted by ubnayan and Kanadiniceman are not the right drivers. Download the file that I mentioned above. They should work.

Let me emphasize something: newer drivers are not always better drivers. Stick with what works, and don't be surprised when the latest and greatest software fails you.

i tried 1st that one u mentioned. i also tried from the device manager but didn't work. after being installed when i restart my machine the installing process again starts and after awhile it says

ExitError:Error= This system does not support the driver you are attempting to install.

anyway, none of u said about the notebook system software. is the problem occuring bcuz of that (as i installed vostroo1500 NSS driver, but as far as i remember that everything was working when the first time i installed, that time i also installed the same notebook system software.) the audio driver was giving me trouble that's why i just reinstalled this OS.

If the audio driver was giving you trouble in the first place, then why did you use the same driver again after you reinstalled?

What OS are you using? Is it XP Pro x64?

I really don't know what I can do to help. You need to just keep searching and downloading drivers and using the Update Driver function until you find one that works.

    Howdy all -
So far, I'm not liking Vista much at all - and am interested in upgrading back to XP. I might be missing something - but so far, I've only found one post as to the actual performance difference, and I believe kanadianiceman wrote he dropped 600 points in 3dmark when upgrading back to xp. Besides compatibility issues, is there a hidden benefit in performance using applications in xp vs. vista for this laptop - ie, are pcmark scores a lot higher using xp?

My original thread was about drivers for Vista x86 (32 bit) but it has been unecessarily hijacked with XP x86 (32 bit) drivers. My concern is these drivers do not work properly and there are some conflicts that cannot be traced immediately. Please test before posting.

I was able to install *every single driver* and my computer's sound works great. I tell you what order to install everything in and what drivers to use here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=2922975#post2922975

If you follow those instructions, it should work.

That's because the driver list posted by Ubnayan and Kanadiniceman uses drivers not designed for XP.

Vista sucks and it's a massive resource hog. With XP it boots about 50% faster and consumes very little memory in comparison to Vista. The performance difference is not really all that massive and with 3DMark you can have several hundred points difference based on how many programs you have running in the background and the length of time you've had between reboots. My 3DMark05 score was almost 9000 and I have yet to test it with PCMark. With Vista x64, you probably will have higher levels of 3DMark performance than with XP x32, but between Vista x32 and XP x32, I have to go with XP.

Every driver that I posted on the link above works well with XP. It has been tested and I use it everyday. My M1530 runs beautifully with Windows XP.

    I just got my M1530.

If I decide to just keep Vista premium should I still do a reformat and install. I would be using the disks that came with the computer.

In the past this was recommended because of all the extra programs and the reinstall would run faster.

Is this still the case or should I just leave it as it is? And if I should reinstall should I get rid of the Recovery partition?

    Thanks!!!

Can any one using Windows XP on a Dell XPS 1530 please test their system on www.pcpitstop.com, it only takes 3 mins or so and its online, and please post their results. It will help me determine if i have a driver problem or its the hardware.

The error I'm experiencing is "Unusually Low Video Performance" which means my 2D rendering on the graphics card is slow, as it says its 29% percent similar to other systems. Let me add i have the WSXGA+ 1680x1050 display, and i experience slightly buggy and slow flash video loading in the browser

    Thanks!

Its OK folks solved the problem, by using the forceware 163.67 drivers from laptopvideo2go.com with the modded inf, they seem to perform the best. No issues what so ever now, problem solved forever hopefully.

I read the entire thread. There seems to be a few files where there's not a concensus regarding the correct version. There are four main posters so far: Arcanepaladin, Ubnayan, Kanadiniceman and Sonicwind.

Video drivers: Arcanepaladin thinks the drivers posted by ubnayan and kanadiniceman are wrong. He suggests R168180.exe (v.156.65) from Dell, Kanadin says R160738.EXE, Ubnayan has 165.01 in his package. Some people have used a cracked file

The SATA drivers: There are a few from various threads. Kent1146 suggested a way using a command switch, but then someone else found another driver that works.

Audio: Kanadin listed R153908.EXE, Arcanepaladin disagrees and suggests R168180.exe, although it seems kanadin's listed file was confirmed by a few others.

Bluetooth: there's some story about leaving bluetooth on while going to XP on a thread, but haven't seen it confirmed.

Any other files in dispute? Any comments on which files are best? I'll update this post as I read more.

I to have installed xp on my new M1530. I used a mixture of drives, now the problem i am having, is i only see 2 primary ide and 2 secondary ide devices. Not sure which one i'm suppose to use the SATA achi driver on. And, i'm not sure which model. Most of the drivers i used were from ubnyan's set. Accept bluetooth etc. Now i think it was either the chipset drivers or the video drivers from there that is not allowing my laptop to wake from sleep. Anyone else?

I do have another problem, the sleep/hibernate problem. I read someone said they ahd it, but after installing video drivers it was fixed. Now i had it with chipset/video drivers installed, then i removed video, did a driver cleaner, then reinstalled, but i still can't wake from sleep or hibernate. Maybe it's the chipset drivers i used? If anyone has any insight that would be great

    No achi driver installed(yet)

EDIT: Fixed the no standbye/hibernate by uninstalling the driver from ubnyan's pack and installed the xp vostro 1500 driver from dell's site. So i'm happy now, but when i go to install the achi driver, it asks me which model, and shows a list, i don't want to bsod loop myself.

Arcane, Awesome post! One question about it though. You're configuration is using XP Home.. Do i go about the same steps as you went through if I am installing XP Pro 32 bit?

    Greetings everyone!

Please add me to the list of those who have COMPLETELY installed Xp Pro SP2 on my 1530, and I'm a HAPPY CAMPER. Also, after some research, I believe I may have an answer for the sound card issue that some have had problems or seemingly confusing results - eg the Sigmatel Stac C-Major HD Audio Driver. This was my last obstacle to a complete installation, and I finally found the answer.

Microsoft is moving toward a bit of a universal driver framework, particularly with soundcard drivers. They describe this in KB articles KB888111 and in a predecessor article, and what it boils down to is that to install any HD audio driver in XP, you must *first* have the "baseline" driver for what they call the UAA Driver Framework. If you don't have the proper UAA driver, no HD audio drivers will install in XP. That explains the frequent "The device you are trying to install is not supported on this system" message.

I suspect the reason we are seeing conflicting reports on which version of the Sigmatel driver is appropriate is due to the fact that some owners are using different source media for their XP installations, some with and some without this KB888111 UAA framework driver.

To see if you are impacted by this problem while tring to install XP, do the following with your computer hooked up to the Internet (assuming you have XP on the network):

    1. Go into Device Manager
    2. Browse under "System Devices", and scroll down the list.
    3. See if you have an exclamation point next to a generic "PCI Device"
    4. If you do, right-click on the device and select "Update Driver"
    5. Allow XP to search the network for the updated driver.
    6. If you are affected, you will see a dialog with wording something like "Microsoft KB88111 UAA Driver Framework" being detected and installed.
    7. If the driver for your sound device is already present, it will self-detect, install, and activate almost immediately upon installation of the UAA driver.
    8. Your sound should be immediately available.

And while I haven't played with it much yet, it feels GREAT to have XP on my 1530!! It took longer than I expected due to some partitioning issues, but it is up and it works. If anyone would like me to post more details on my installation project, I will be happy to post them as I have kept a bit of a diary on the process as well as a driver manifest.

I hope this message helps on the sound card issue!

    -David

Thanks, Matt. I would think that the installation would be essentially identical regardless as to whether it's Home or Pro, as the architecture is very similar, the only difference being that Pro is configured for power users. Try it and see what happens, but please let us know how it worked out for you.

Why does it matter if the drivers are the latest and greatest? Unless it's a video card driver and you're so obsessed with graphics performance that you're willing to do anything for 2 extra frames per second at a certain resolution, newer drivers are basically irrelevant. Newer is not always better, and you should stick with what works.

The "Notebook System Software" is not first, foremost, or even necessary. I did not even know what the NSS was until you just now mentioned it and my computer works wonderfully without it. So, of course, I'm not going to mention it.

Video drivers are not as necessary as audio drivers? How did you come upon that conclusion?

That's how I figured out how to make mine work.

Definitely check out that link above.

I attempted to load xp on my dell xps 1530. I followed some instructions which had me download the drivers and then load the SATA driver into the xp install files using nLite and then burn a new install disk with the SATA drivers. It all seemed to be working, but when XP finished intalling and tried to reboot the computer briefly flashed a blue screen with some text on it and the immediatly attempted to reboot. Now the computer will not boot. I assume it has something to do with the SATA drivers. Does anyone have any advice on how to proceed?

    Thanks,
    Otis

David - would you be able to post pcmark and / or 3dmark scores for us? I'm thinking about going back - but not sure it's worth all the work yet.
    Thanks!

Don't bother with the AHCI drivers until after you install XP. Then follow the instructions outlined here:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=164159

Can you list what items you see under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers in your Device Manager? Thanks.

Did you already install the Intel Chipset drivers?

Sorry, man, I just don't get any kind of clicking noise when my volume is all the way down. The driver I used can be found here:

Geoff, I'd be happy to do that. I tried downloading 3dMark earlier this afternoon, but for some reason my link was *reallly* slow, so I backed off. I'll give 'em another shot.

I'll run them for XP and again for Vista and post the results.

FOR EVERYONE HAVING THE AUDIO DRIVER INSTALLATION PROBLEM IN WINDOWS XP, I HAVE GOT THE SOLUTION, SOONER DAVE ABOVE IS RIGHT!

i TRIED WHAT SOONERdAVE MENTIONED ABOVE, BUT THAT DIDN'T WORK FOR ME, THIS IS WHAT U DO:

Before u run setup in the extracted Sigmatel driver folder, go in to the HADQAFE folder and then Win2kxp and run the microsoft KB file, do the install and then run the audio driver setup and it will work!
