BTW, where's the driver for the Dell Wireless Card? I only see Intel WiFi card.

EDIT: Nevermind, I found it. Just search in Dell website for Inspiron 1520 Dell 1490 WLAN

    All,

I have installed WinXP using drivers from Page 17 but I seems to be missing the following:

    - Notebook System Software: do I HAVE to install this?
    - Touchpad scrolling: it doesn't work, even though I have installed Dell Touchpad driver.

    Can anyone help?

BTW, if I login to this forum, I only see 9 pages in this thread. If I don't, I see more than 19. What happened?

Anyone able to get an external monitor to work with both the laptop and the monitor at their native resolutions. I have tried to set this up in both the nvidia contol panel as well as in windows and each time it reduces my laptop resolution. This is in dualview so it should allow me to run both at their native resolution.

I show the driver version as: 6.14.11.5665

I am trying to run a Samsung SyncMaster 731BF with my 1530. The 1530s resolution is 1440X900 and the Samsung is 1280x1024.

I attempted to download the latest drivers from nvidia but they would not load, and when I ran their auto version checker it told me to check with Dell.

    Thanks for any ideas,
    Kyle

mfield. Look up the vostro 1500 display driver, install that, your sleep/hibernate/standby issues will be gone.

Ianwarrior: you don't need the NSS stuff installed. I installed it after, and found it pretty usless.

Although I haven't had any problems after installing XP and all the drivers on the M1530 it seems some people have experienced some trouble with audio, touchpad, and video drivers.

As I mentioned before the components in your particular system might be slightly different from others so I guess all you can do now is to manually try different drivers versions posted by other people until you get the one that works fine with your system. I did the same until I got everything working.

Just a quick question - on my m1530, before I sent it back, I tried to install xp. It got to the point where it would boot into xp past post, and then when get to the screen where it's green with the mouse cursor, and then there would be a quick error before rebooting - I think it was something about write error to disk & lsass.exe or something like that (it would only be up for a split second). I thought I followed the directions in the driver download packages correctly, but I obviously missed something... Ideas?

Thank you everyone for your contributions to this thread. It has helped me immensely with this ridiculous task of getting XP on a Vista machine. Anyways, the only thing I'm having trouble with currently is getting bluetooth to work properly. I have read all 27 pages of this thread (that took awhile) and I've been working on getting XP in tip top shape since I got my M1530 Friday. In regards to the helpful post on page 17, how do I install the bluetooth drivers that I've already extracted since it doesn't run the set-up properly? Using R161378.exe, it tells me to activate bluetooth pressing Fn-F2 or the radio on/off button, and Fn-F2 definitely does not look like it is assigned to a hotkey on this system, and I have no idea where the radio on/off button is or if it exists on this model. According to Dell QuickSet, the radio on/off button is the power button and Fn-F2 does NOTHING :-\ When using R140135.exe from page 17, I extract the drivers like normal, and of course the set-up does not work. Now here is the stumper: trust me, I know how to manually update drivers, and I've had to do it with a few of the drivers to get this system up and running. The problem is that there IS NO LISTING anywhere in my device manager for Bluetooth. I would assume it would be under System devices, or I don't even know where else, but I've dropped down every menu, and there is nothing about Bluetooth.

Also, for the help of others, using the Intel 4965AGN wireless driver .exe (R172348), after leaving the system alone for awhile, when it's supposed to go into standby mode, it would give an error message saying "The Intel 4965AGN wireless driver is preventing the system from going into standby. If this problem persists, you should update the driver." To fix this wireless driver problem, I had to run the Intel PROSet Wireless Network Connection software (wi-fi connection v11.5.0.0) as well.

    Hi there!
As far I see just few of us succeeded with getting all the drivers work properly on winxp. Congratulations to those. Since almost everybody have some problems with the unofficial drivers I would prefer to wait some more time to get the proper ones from Dell site. But do anybody have the idea (based on similar experiences in this matter - with M1330 for instance) whether Dell will release the XP drivers for M1530 or not? If yes, how long might it take before we will be introduced to the stable release of those drivers?

Snap . I'm in exactly the same position and am also stumped on this. I did however find a knowledge base article at on Dell's site which looked like it should provide exactly the answer .. entitled..

"Bluetooth Module Problems After Changing From Microsoft® Windows Vista® to XP"

Article summary "This article helps to resolve issues with a Dell Bluetooth 350, 355, or 360 module not functioning after changing from Windows Vista to Windows XP."

For the 355 module , it refers to the R159805 file.

    http://support.dell.com/support/dow...eid=R159805&formatcnt=1&libid=0&fileid=213714

Unfortunately, this didn't work for me either, yet may help someone?

EDIT: I now have Bluetooth working and am now on a separate , unrelated problem of getting the Nokia PC Suite to recognise that it is :)

I'm not sure whether this is the "correct" way.. but this is what I did

Bearing in mind I'm not using a wireless connection to the internet.. (good ole ethernet cables running through the walls and sockets everywhere) I turned on the wireless on/off switch (Owners manual page 32 - front right hand side), clicked the Intel PROSet/Wireless manger icon in the sys tray and selected 'Enable Radio'

I then re-ran R161378.exe and waited until it found all sorts of Bluetooth stuff going on. Then I re-ran R159805.exe and rebooted. I then clicked the IntelPROSet/Wireless manager icon in the sys tray and selected "Use windows to mange WiFi" and rebooted.

Current state of play is the Bluetooth icon is showing in the systray, there's an encouraging backlit bluetooth motif left of the power on/off switch .. .. my phone is finding the laptop.. but the laptop cant find the phone. .. but.. hey.. it's a start!

    Hope this helps

I think you mis-understood me, what i meant to say was, the audio driver problem has been troubleshooted on this forum few pages back, and that person made no reference to have tried it, so i assumed help was being sought without trying that first.

I hope nealloy1981 solved his problem by referring to it ;)

I was also having the audio problems other posters have described. The driver install displayed an error relating to wrong driver/hardware. I followed the steps below to get it working.

    Ran driver install
Rebooted to error as described above
Checked device manager which showed an exclamation under a pci device
Right clicked on the device and chose update from location
Browse box pointed to file in sigmatel folder which I installed
Driver wizard displayed error - looking for sthda.sys
    Pointed to sthda.sys inside dell\drivers\WDM\153908
    Rebooted and golden

    Hope this helps someone

Ok while I am not running Vista but I downgraded to XP I was able to use the drivers on this site to get it working. Thanks a ton, I think this is not the last thing that I had to correct. I now have 100% functionality without Vista!

Maybe I spoke too soon. While I can get the resolutions right now, when I switch on the second display it drops the refresh rate of my main display down to 50hx which is not idea.

    Any thoughts?

Do we have a definitive & golden post with the steps and drivers? There are so many pages here that I wasn't sure if OP had kept the first post updated or not. Actually - I wonder if this thread should be split under a different topic for easier searching to a 'XP on m1530' thread or something like that.

I got my xps 1530 running XP with the drivers in post #163 on page 17. Good instructions too. I just downloaded them to my desktop and burned them onto a CD to make a type of driver disk for when I had XP installed. Everything works.

I am having the exact same problem and desperately need some help. I have tried basically everything and nothing is working. If anyone here can offer help it would be much appreciated. It makes standby practically pointless. It reboots from standby fine and reconnects to my wireless network flawlessly, then after 2 minutes, the 'wifi' light turns off and I am unable to change any of the wireless settings until after a reboot.

I am using the 3945abg adapter and it's really stressing me out. I hate having to restart just because the hardware has some kind of problem. I am running the driver 1.5.0.32 and Windows XP Professional. Could this be some kind of driver conflict, and if so can someone work out what has happened. I was informed that clicking the box 'allow windows to turn off this device to save power'. This didn't work and the problem still persists. The drivers I used after installing XP are on the following page(the 2 mediafire links): http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=212981&highlight=how+to+install+xp+m1530
I changed the SATA operation to ATA and so didn't install the AHCI support driver, could this have something to do with it?
Anyway sorry for rambling on... please someone help!

I've put Xp on and it's all good so far, except regarding quickset, it installs with -s slient mode, but I can't find the files in prog files\dell, and while the buttons work, there is no on screen feedback. How can I enable this?

kanadianiceman, ubnyan, sinstoic, and others, thank you so much! I was afraid I was stuck with Vista! I was surprised what crap it is!

As far as the video, I'm just forcing the regular most current NVIDIA 8600 GT driver (169.21, v. 6.14.11.6921, 12/5/07). Seems to work fine, recovers from sleep, and hibernation, good numbers in WoW.

The SATA controller on the other hand is a pain in the rear! I guess I'll have to do the F6 reach-around next time I do a clean install. I can not do it in XP.

Has anyone found a good solution for the SigmaTel Audio Sound Blaster Audigy software?

    Hi sLuGO
Were you able to resolve this and enable AHCI option in BIOS, I am in the process of installing xp and using "arcanepaladin's" list... and when I follow this list and try to carry ou step 5. which refere to another post, and while I follow that... I too get only "primary and secondary ide" only....in device manger under IDE controller...... I don't see "Intel ICH8M 3-port SATA Controller - 2828... etc.

    Thoughts!!

I haven't seen a mini-CD or CD business card in years. Last mini CD I had to use was for a driver for a video card. Drivers can be downloaded anyway so that's not a big issue.

hey i spoke too soon a few posts back. I'm still having trouble with the wireless adapter. If i go into stand-by and come out, the wireless connection is disabled, and if I try to re-enable it, it tries and gives an error message, and remains disabled. The only way to fix it is to reboot, which isn't a huge deal, but is a minor annoyance. Sometimes it also says the wireless adapter prevented me from going into stand-by mode. Also, when I click start -> Turn off computer, I only have the Stand-by, Shut-down, and Restart options, no hibernate :-\ After going to my wireless adapter properties in the device manager, it says I'm running driver version 11.5.0.32. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you all

Kanadianiceman, I saw your 1530 web video when you first got yours. It looks way better than mine. Do you get 30 fps inside under normal house lighting? A lot of people have issues, and I've been through about3 or 4 web cam changes already.... wondering why yours was so good.

My power supply died last night! It's just making a kind of low buzzing noise, the light doesn't come on and it obviously doesn't power the laptop.

Luckily I have another charger that is doing the job at the moment.

    Hello Guys,

Like most of you, I am trying to install Windows XP on my XPS1530 and thanks to the help here, I got most of the drivers I need.

There is one issue though. After resuming from standby or hibernate, my wireless connection does not work anymore. But after a reboot, it works fine again.

The wireless card is Intel 3945ABG, with latest driver version: 11.5.0.32.
I have tried lower driver version too, but the same issue.

I tried to recover from Vista image to see if the issue is there or not in Vista, but the issue is not happening in Vista. So this is not a physical wireless card problem. Probably some driver conflict.

Has anyone of you had this issue? Please help!

Hey guys, I just recently got my XPSM1530 and I just had a quick question, Im noticing that when Im playing video games even if the framerate is say between 50-60FPS, there is somewhat of a continuous stuttering going on and I'm not so sure if that's normal or what's causing it. I have the 156.69 Video Card drivers that came with Windows Update and might they be outdated? If so, how do I get the latest ones? Thanks in advance guys. And if you need my specs:

    Intel Core 2 Duo T7700 @ 2.40Ghz
    3.00GB of RAM
    256 8600MGT

I had that issue with my old Sony VAIO with Intel 2200B/G card. For the XPS M1530, I specifically choose the Dell WLAN card and not Intel and had not issue. So I am leaning towards issues with Intel card itself.

    mfield,

I found a solution to that wireless standby / hibernate issue. Go to Device Manager, Click on the Intel 3945ABG device, right click, choose Properties. In Advanced tab, there is a bunch of properties. Find Power Management, uncheck Default Value and set the bar to the highest. Reboot.

After this, my wireless connectivitity is fine after standby and hibernate.

Hope this helps you and anyone who is having this issue.
