I posted this over in the benchmark thread but I am going to post it here also. I hope no one minds. I would really like to figure this out.

Ok set my resolution down and ran the test when I first booted the machine cold and I still only got 3971.

I just installed doom3 and ran the fps. In the tests ran by Notebook check from Jacks signature they got 99.9 fps. I got on the same settings 62 fps.

and there system had only 2m of ram and a 7250. I should have been much higher.

First off. I am amazed this machine can run doom3 on ultra high setting
Secondly I forgot how beautiful doom3 is.

Any thoughts on squeezing a little more speed out of this?

Are you running the test with your Battery Plan set to high performance? I just had the same problem today with terrible framerates in counter strike source. My power plan was see to Power Saver, even though my laptop was plugged into the AC adapter.

Also I got my DVD player replaced tonight and I thought I would let you all know how that went.

First of all they have to dissasemble the whole laptop to get it out I was freaking out as he was touching and pulling and prying every inch of my beloved machine. ( I felt so violated lol). He had a very hard time getting it apart he couldnt figure out what to take off to get at the dvd drive.

He said he had worked on 3 of these before but I think he said that just to calm me down. I'm sure he loved me looking over his shoulder the whole time.

Good thing I have been reading here because I told him about the cabling that cause the keyboard to bulge, and when he got to that part he said he could see how that would be a problem. And when he was putting it back together he had a real hard time getting all the cables to set right.

He also had a tough time with the wifi and verizon antenae. He then lost several screws for the hardrive case and had to use some he had in his bag. Later he found them stuck to the magnet on the lid of the screen. (I mention this incase you ever loose screws working on yours. We looked everywhere for those dam things).

He said it shouldnt take more than 40 min and it took more thank 2 hours. (He thought I was nuts when I insisted on wiping the fingerprints and smudges of the inside metal framing. I told him it would drive me crazing knowing how smudged up the inside was.

All in all it worked out fine the new DVD works great and the keyboard is flat and everything works. Picked up a few scratches but I can live with that since this will be on the road with me and Im sure it will get more.

Tip: If I ever get work done on a laptop again I will clear the work area of everything and supply little cups for the screws and put a towel down for the work area. (The scratches came from him flipping the machine over and over on the formica surface).

Why live with it when you don't have to? Call Dell tell them what you said here, plus part of the reason we all get the XPS is because of the name reputation AND looks to go with the performance. No excuse for that. Tell them you want a new lid. I did that two months ago with HP when I sent mine back for a new motherboard, they scratched it up and I requested a new lid. I had to get a rep to do it though.

    Just my thought here. :)

Thanks. If I don't put a scratch in it this week I will do that.

I got the new nvidia driver from Dell using your trick with the insperon 1720.

Got my 3dmark score from 3971 to 4271. So its a step in the right direction.

Now can you tell me how to get SP1 and is it safe to put on. When I go to Windows update its not there.

Thanks again for all the help.

After clicking the update a few times sp1 appeared.

    Again thanks!

Yahoo, it's shipped! Strange, it reads it shipped yesterday at 3/22 12:00 AM from Nashville and now is in Wilimington, OH this morning. I have next day shipping and Dell's site lists it's EDD of 3/25. Does this make sense? I can't find a delivery date on DHL's website.

so far i only had 2 packages ship with them, i try to avoid them like a plague.

here is a little story about the first package from 2004, sorry about the swears (censored), but after you read that, i was a bit mad.

Europe got the Penryn before the US did. Look for T8x00, T9x00 and X9000 CPU's. Those are Penryn.

DHL was a treat for me. they actually had up to date tracking. FedEx and UPS normally dont have tracking #'s that up to date. They show where it is at the start and ends of the day.

My replacement LCD went from DHL to from texas to california. just hoping its a good one, probably get a call from the tech tomorrow.

Call them - you can probably get them with Penryn over the phone.

Some countries in europe have them on the web page, some dont. I had to call them to get it with penryn - and the old 2.4 Ghz cost about the same as the penryn 2.5 Ghz with larger cache and lower power consumption.

No sure how you're benchmarking and you may already know this but.. Doom3 is capped at 60 FPS (Give or take) to remove the cap when benchmarking I believe "timedemo demo1 usecache" a good site for tweaking ID games is http://ucguides.savagehelp.com/

    Grats Rockchok.

I got the dw306 and it is the best screen I have seen on a notebook. I love it.

I have no issues but do not know how to tell which display manufacturer I have.
The display looks as clear and as good as my 22" LG monitor...
