benojir you can change anything u want until it ships. however sometimes your ship date gets delayed due to availability but with it being shipped the 8th of may id assume yer ship date wouldnt change.

as far as the whole ram deal im not so sure i buy into it. to me it sounds a bit more like a rumor that got started and people have just fallen into it. if it were true they wouldnt be selling systems with anything but 2,4,6 etc gigs of ram.

thanks for your reply. was considering changing it, but saw today that it´s already with the courier! so friday delivery apparently.

i´m assuming I have 1x1024 and 1x 2048 stick, so if i ever want to upgrade it myself to 4gb, can i simply replace the 1024 stick with a 2gb crucial (or other cheap supplier) stick, or do i have to basically by the 4gb over again to match (sorry if that sounds like a stupid question)

    cheers,

    ben

you need two identical ram sticks to get DDR speed.

    its dual channel for reason

for instance on my desktop my memory in DDR2 aka dual channel mode runs at close to 7000mb/s

now i replace one 2gb stick with 1gb and my memory speed drops to 3700mb/s

in normal desktop use you won't notice, but in an application like photoshop or never games you will notice

dual channel DDR can be tricky. Its best to have identical memory. but it also sometimes will work with just two identical size memory.

if general public would be educated, a lot of crap on the market wouldn't sell. and poor people in marketing would be out of jobs.

    yeah works no problem
you have to go to the volume control in the taskbar on right hand side (near the clock)
go to advanced and click PC speak mute otherwise sound comes out of both also make sure SPDIF interface is checked. Works through my Onkyo 875 perfectly, turns my 1530 into a awesome media player too :)

as far as i know it doesnt matter the amount of ram you get as long as its the same speed. all new computers only work with DDR2 memory. you cannot use ddr ram anymore. I think you are reffering to the mhz for the ram. and as long as all the ram is the same speed it should all work fine. I beleive the m1530 max's out at 667mhz atleast thats the speed ram they ship their systems with. I think only desktops currently go up to 800mhz.

as far as 1 stick or 2 sticks for 1 gig of ram or whatever number it may be the only difference is having an empty slot to replace later. however i believe the m1530 max's at 4gb and it would be cheapest to just get 2 2gb sticks then 1 4gb stick.

yes i know 1530 uses DDR2, i just say DDR out of habit, DDR2 is basically updated DDR.

And yes you are correct 1530 does max out 667, I bought 4gb (2x2gb) of 800mhz DDR2. Ram runs at 667, but also adjusted CAS timmings, doesn't make a big difference, i wa able to get extra 400mb/s out of the ram.

4gb costed me 65 bucks, a lot cheaper then getting it from Dell

my desktop ram runs at 1100mhz by the way, ram bandwith is close to 7000mb/s

keep the ram in pairs, if you want 4gb get 2 sticks of 2gb, don't get 4gb stick

What kind of temperatures is everyone getting on their 8600M GT DDR3? Mine got up to 83 degrees C on 169.25 drivers, I went back to windows update drivers, and it is now going to very high 70's while gaming. But it has ALWAYS been idle as high as 72 since i started checking...

Is there something wrong with my card?

EDIT: it can go as low as 56, but then goes right back up again to 72 then back down, wierd fluctuation.

Should i contact dell then? Because mine easily goes to 72 on idle.

My card is getting decent airflow, i would assume, and It now goes up to 77 gaming when on the windows update drivers. But it also fluctuates between 58-72 on idle, ie going up form 58 to 72 then the fan kicks in and it goes back down etc.

I'd call them. 72C is way too high on idle, that is more what I would expect when gaming. The GPU heatsink may not be seated properly causing you to get those high temperatures. Good luck!

My best buy sells m1530's too.

Can't wait to receive my m1530!! It said that the delivery time is 5/14-5/19 :-S Long time haha. I really am nervous about having to send mine back as well.

Oh and how does one know that they have Penryn? Will I just automatically have it because I ordered after it came out?

    Hey all.

Future XPS M1530 owner here...just deciding on a few final details. Can't wait!

I do have a question for you gents, though: Would you get a refurbished laptop? They're 2-300 cheaper than a new system, and they're certified and all that noise. The system I'm looking at has some absolutely phenominal specs. From memory:

    2.10GHz processor
    160GB 7200rpm hard drive
    256mb GeForce 8600GT video card

Among other things. It even includes some great additional things that the previous owner had ordered (it could be he returned it within 30 days for whatever reason), and best of all, it comes in a really cool, Crimson Red color.

So...what do you think? Money is tight right now (though I imagine it's the same for everyone these days), so the extra 2-300 could be a big difference.

    Thanks, all!
    -Merc

Well then, your one of the minority having problems then!
I'd say about 95% don't have problems, (I'm one of them) and the rest have some problems and why you see them here. Do you realize how many thousands have the M1530 and don't even know about this forum. They probably don't search for it as their not having problems...

I actually switched out the HDD on my current laptop (e1505) which originally had a 120gb 5400rpm for a 200gb 7200rpm, so it all good ^^

on second thought I wish I had gotten the 9cell battery although it would costed me another 150, which is not practical in my case for another 1 or 2 hours of battery life

I just got a Dell XPS M1530. I wanted to get a Core 2 Duo in the 2.00GHz's, but I was short on money. So, I had to stick with the default T5550 1.83GHz. However, it was a steal for me anyways, as I got it during the Dell XPS Savings (still on) for $999, but plus $100 for the 8600M GT, so $1,099. (saved about $250 from what I originally could've gotten).I got worried because it reached my max. spending amount.

I finally got it after 9 days, and wow, the Dell XPS M1530s have gotta be the most stylish laptops I've ever seen. I got it in Midnight Blue, which was nice. The aluminum finish is great too.
Surprisingly, even without a Core 2 Duo in the 2.00GHz's, the T5550 was great, even ran Crysis very well on medium settings with the 8600M GT. I'm glad I got a Dell XPS M1530, and it was worth buying--even at max. spending amount...

hey guys anyone who ordered a new m1530 above the KB where it says XPS M1530 by the media keys did anyones have the film covering missing? same with their battery?

Dell sent me a replacement unit for mine and it seems to be missing that plastic film on both the battery and over the media key area. Seems strange to me because if it was a brand new unit u would think it would have those.

On a side note the replacement unit came with a LG panel the only thing ive noticed the power button doesnt seem to be as nice as the original units.

hey out of the box what drivers did you guys have to install to get sp1? My original m1530 which im typing on now i formatted from scratch and installed the drivers and the new UPEK driver and sp1 showed up.

My replacement m1530 came today and i installled just the updated UPEK finger drivers and for some reason sp1 still wont show up as an update. the video drivers are the same on both. I cant figure out what needs to be updated.

The 3 'new' M1530 I received didn't have the plastic on the media button strip. They did have small plastic on the Dell logo on the hinges. The same thing was also on a M1330 I ordered for a friend.

    XPS M1530, Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T8300 (2.4GHz/800MHzFSB, 3M L2 Cache)
Midnight Blue Casing With Microsatin Finish XPS M1530
    4GB, DDR2, 667MHz 2 Dimm, for XPS M1530
15.4 inch Wide Screen WXGA+ TrueLife LED LCD with Camera for XPS M1530
    256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT
250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive for XPS M1530

Decided to go with the LED instead of the 1680x1050 because I think it looks a LOT better that the non-LED's at least from the displays I saw from my local Dell dealer. Loss of resolution hurts but I can get used to that after a while, but I don't think I could live with a screen that I know is subpar.

I was wondering if there were any threads here on what to do when you first get your system (I won't be getting mine until next week :(). I plan on reformatting to shred the bloatware, but what are some other things I should first do when my system arrives? (like what should I be checking for, what tweaks should I make, new drivers to install, idk much about laptops)

Took the plunge today too. Nice Sale deal.

But been reading a bunch about the grainy 1050 screen. Has that been resolved? Or has the bad screens pretty much cycled thru?

The one I ordered is being built with this screen:

15.4 inch Wide Screen WXGA+ 1680x1050 TrueLife LCD

Is this the offending screen. Would it be better to upgrade to the Hi Def 1920x1200 LCD?

Instead of fixing some of the singificant problems with the M1530 like the lousy screens and the poor speaker sound quality, Dell decides to release a new color option for the M1530/M1330 - Flamingo Pink!  It's no wonder they're losing out to HP.

Can anyone comment on the WUXGA screens? Samsung vs LG? Is there a big difference?

I just did, and am having a hell of a time getting a hold of Dell. When I was able to get a hold of someone they said Samsung is the only provider. However I am trying to get a hold of Dell again to confirm.
