Well, with that help from tech support I got, I don't think its actually 'messing' around with the BIOS per se... we are just loading on the default settings and thats it..

Anyway, as can be seen in that link, quiet a few different things worked for different people, and at least AFAIK, there was no sure universal fix for that issue.... Anyway, as long as everything is fine, its good... :)

Hi just wondering if anyone with the nine cell battery has noticed any give in it?

Mine sits flush with the back of the laptop but if I moved the laptop a small bit the battery seems to move a bit, or seems to be a bit loose.

Im just wondering if anyone else has noticed this?
I'd hate in three months time to find that I'd damaged the connection by not doing something about it.

Other than that, I love this lappie!!!

Yes it does sit in flush, but there is a very very tiny movement... first I thought it was some kinda manuf. defect.. then took some pics and sent it to Dell Tech here.. they called me and said its normal and it was "designed" in that way, so that its not very rigid, but has some very tiny bit of flex.... though they said, if I was not happy, I can have a free replacement, but that wouldn't ensure the new one would be without any movement..

Further, the guy took some pics and video with a M1530 he had, with a 9-cell, and it was the same there too...

See these pics and tell me if u r referring to the same...

But as I said, the movement I had was *very* tiny and not a big deal.. infact, some times I don't notice it at all.. and for sure, while on the table, its not resulting in my laptop moving back n forth or wobbling or anything like that... its all stable n fine..

Yeah thats it exactly. Its not a big deal at all, I was just worried that mine had a faultly clasp or something. Thanks for clearing that up. Pity that you can't ask for a replacement and then keep both!! ha ha, I wish...

Dont worry... its not a big deal, infact if u look at the pics, its taken in in a very zoomed in way... so I usually don't notice it visually or neither does it wobble or anything.. laptop is perfectly stable.. just when I was too picky to make sure everything was fine, did I see that tiny arnd 1 mm kinda movement.. but yeah, the dell tech (and I trust him anyways, be has been very helpful to me, and I know him personally as well) told me its normal and stuff..

So yeah, nothing to worry :)

Edit: lol, they said I can't keep them both :p I would have had to send this one back as soon as I got the new one... and I was just way too bored to do those things and waste time sending it back n stuff, for an issue like this. anyway...

whats a processor got to do with a 32b or 64b OS?? :( sorry, I have never seen an argument like this (pardon my ignorance, if any)...

AFAIK, there are lots of people got in a 64b OS on the M1530...

yes lots people 64bit vista or xp. but if the processor itself is a 32bit, then install the 64bit OS has no meaning, except your processor type is also a 64bit version processor.

Actually.....funny story.......get ready for this one....

I ordered my laptop on 9/20/08 and the estimated shipping date was 10/6/08. It was supposed to arrive between 10/9/08-10/13/08.....

So....I lucked out and they shipped it on the 10/1/08 and the shipping date they said was 10/3/08, which is indeed today.

So first off....instead of having Dell ship my laptop directly to my college campus, they chose to have it delivered home because they wanted to drive up and give it to me and I guess see us (my brother goes here too).....

I came back from vacation on 10/1/08....we drove up from home.....so they can't exactly come up again now right?....

So get this....the laptop did come today and I won't be able to use it until they either send it up or they drive up to give it to me...

    Doesn't that suck?

After weeks & weeks of endless indecisiveness, I FINALLY placed the order for my XPS (see sig.)

    Now I can't wait!

what is the first I should do as soon as I get it?
Besides checking for visual problems (like hinges, or uneven parts), is there some sort of system check-up I can run, to see if everything is 100%?

    thanks.

I got my 1530 the other day and had it spec'd out to the max pretty much:
T9300, GeForce 8600, 128gb ssd, VZW Wan card, BD Burner, LED screen, etc.

It's a very nice laptop, however, after using a 17" laptop for many years I am finding the lower resolution and the smaller screen to be an annoyance for me. So I called Dell about a return. They would not allow the return after talking to the supervisor since they consider the XPC line to be an elite line and because I had it spec'd out to $2600. They said they would lose money on the return. I could return it minus a restocking fee for 15% or $375. So, I took them up on their offer of a $175 credit back to my card.

Anyone else have a problem returning an XPS laptop? Should I try calling again and see if another rep will setup a return or is it hopeless?

well Finally got my replacement. couldn't have come at a better time.

strange thing was, my bluray drive that had failed on the first one started to work again the night I got my new one...

After a quick HDD swith (seagate it came with was noisy as heck compared to the samsung I originally got) and a clean install I'm finally up and running.

no bump, hinges look fine, great screen... bluray rive works! nice and quiet, I am yet to hear a peep from this samsung spinpoint HDD

Thanks to everyone here for all their great insight!

I'm thinking about hooking up the Logitech Z-5500 (5.1 PC speaker setup) to my m1530. Anyone know if I will be able to play music using digital audio with a fiber optic cable? If not, what plugs/cables will work with this setup?

BTW I have a SigmaTel HD sound card (I think) and "Integrated Sound Blaster Audigy HD Software Edition".

While I´m waiting to receive it (ESD= 2008/11/7) please let me ask you a couple of questions about the above list:

    a) At the first line of the list, you´ll see that the model name got a R letter= XPS M1530 R.
What this R letter means? I´ve bought it brand new, not Refurbished.... so I need to know if this R is related to "refurbished" please, so I can call Dell and demand them send me a brand new XPS M1530...

    b) I finally decided to go for the WUXGA M1530 panel, eventhough reading several posts at this forum about the "microscopic font size" and the "grannier" issue of the Samsung panels... I hope that I didn´t make a wrong decision...any feedback from current WUXGA M1530 owners please? Do upscaling the DPI to 120 help to improve the reading?

    c) What is your overall experience with Dell Support? I hope that I might never need to contact them!! (but who know...). I´ve bought two Complete Care´s support years and will like to know if it worth it or not (according to Dell´s level of service and support).

Thanks in advance for your feedback, and THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing all your knowledge about Dell´s XPS M1530 at this great forum (I´ve bought it due to you, guys!!)

    Congratulations and advance wishes.

Yes, changing the DPI to 120 for sure is better. I love my screen and initially I was working with the default 96 DPI. It was fine even then, simply because of the screen 'real estate' space.. But since then, I have it set at 120 and its awesome. I am sure you have made a good choice.

For me, I have had a wonderful time with Dell (since the last 8-9 years actually). With this M1530 purchase in particular, Dell has been awesome, incredibly quick support (Both telephone and email), and very good support at that. Of course, I didn't have any major issues myself but I did call them for many things and they were very patient, kind and useful. Though I had two friends who also got the M1530 and had to go for some part replacements, and they had no problem at all. Everything was fixed within 1BD, with on-site service.

wuxga is great. Soooooooo great. I love it, pictures and videos look amazing on it, Secondly unless you have problems say reading newsprint you won't need to use the upscaled dpi.

The screen brightness is a flaw though, at full brightness you can view the screen all day any lighting conditions, grand but it eats the battery, and if you turn town the brightness (as in very low) the small print is impossiible to read.

Thats my only grievance with the laptop other than that it is sweet.

Well I mean if you turn it down fully or down to like 20/30% I find it very hard then to read the small print. I'm not saying the screen is weak or dim, Its more that you don't have the option to blind yourself, like with the led at full power.

^ I am not really sure about the "R", but googling gave some hints pointing towards it "may be" a refurbished.. or something like 'open box refurbished'.. I am not sure though. You might want to call Dell ASAP and clarify this. They are the best people to give u the details on this. Cheers.

    Thanks for your feedback, fonduekid!

I´ve just chatted with an USA Dell representative and she told me that at USA the "R" letter stands for the " RED" color of the XPS M1530...
Funny at this may sound, I told her that I´ve purchase it Tuxedo Black..... (??).
( LOL....maybe the saleswoman who attend my purchase order might be daltonic?...well, surely it´s not the case because daltonism is the inability to distinguish red from green and not red from tuxedo black...)

The following question from her was if I´ve bought it at the USA site, and I´ve told her that I´ve bought it at a Latin America´s site, after what she recommends me to contact a representative from my country to ask him/her about what the "R" letter means...unfortunately there´s no 7/24 helpdesk here (Just MON/FRI) so I´ll have to wait until next monday...

In brief, in USA the "R" letter stands for the "RED" color of the XPS M1530...and in Latin America...who knows??? Next monday I´ll reveal this secret!!

Again, thanks so much for posting your answer!

ps: will be grateful to any other member of this awesome forum could reveal me what the "R" letter means for Latin America´s purchases before Monday...you know...until then I´ll be a little nervous about my purchase!! Thanks!

Just upgraded my system and ran 3Dmark...

14674 points !!!! Very happy with that result! But is it not dangerous to OC the cpu to 3.4. I have done that and the temperatures seems ok. GPU1 53°C,
GPU2 50°C and CPU 37°C (when idle). When Its fully loaded the CPU is maximum 70°C. (I use the zalman nc2000 cooler.)

Just received my M1530 today (ordered October 21st, quick delivery ;-)

    T9300
    WUXGA (awesome!)
    4GB RAM
    250GB 7200RPM
    8600M GT
Blue Ray (originally ordered DVD, but the sales guy gave me a free upgrade, whoohoo)

One question though, I ordered it with Vista Ultimate but only received the 32bit version. I always thought that the Ultimate edition always came with 32 and 64 bit on the DVD?

Did any of you get the 64 bit version?

You can ask for the 64 bit version and I don't think they usually shipped it by default. But people have got it when they asked for it, as far as I know.

Hi Guys.. Got my XPS M1530 Yesterday!! :D Superb Machine!!
I have a question though.. It has a 250GiG HDD, with two partitions -
    1. First with some 200 odd GiGs on which the OS is installed.
    2. Second one the recovery partition.
I want to further divide the partition on which OS is installed. Can i do it, without causing the issues with the OS? What program i need for that?

    Thanx. :)

    Congratulations.

    1. Use GParted < http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/using-gparted-to-resize-your-windows-vista-partition/ > to repartition / resize as you want. Its an awesome tool. I have used GParted on two M1530' and partitioned without any problem. It works like a charm. Just make sure you back up your data or whatever before you do it. You could do something like C: OS with ~ 50-60 GB and the rest for your Data or whatever..

    http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php GParted Live CD Download

    2. Keep the recovery partition. It might come in handy. There are people who get rid of it, but I would suggest keeping it on for a while, till you make sure everything in your system is working fine n well.

When you are using the GParted live CD, you might come across the situation where there are already 4 partition's.. OS, recovery, media direct and stuff... and you cannot have 4 primary partitions I think.. so Its like 3 plus the extended, logical partition.. so once you shrink the C: OS with about say 60 GB, then drag the remaining from the extended partition out...

I had a similar issue with this because I wasn't fully aware of how things worked the first time, and Stewie helped me out on this info by explaining clearly, about the way to do this.. But its not difficult at all, very easy if all the instructions are followed, and keep the Vista OS DVD ready in hand...

I think most 1530's come already with 4 partitions

    1st - eisa partition (about 50mbs)
2nd - os partion (most of the hdd)
    3rd - recovery partition (10 Gbs)
    4th - media direct partition (about 3Gbs)

You can have four primary partitions or 3 primary partitions and a logical partition (which can theoretically have as many partitions and os's on it as you wan't)

Its kind of a nuisance dell fills them all up, especially if you wan't to dual boot or tri boot.

Alright People, i didnt used GParted, but used EASEUS Partition Manager.
Installed it on my XPS and did the partitioning/resizing/splitting stuff and restarted and voila everything was perfect!!!!
No errors whatsoever. I would highly recommend it to others, since you dont have to burn it on the Discs and boot from it etc. just install it and run, do your stuff and restart. No hassles!!

Also thanx people for your help.. :)

AFAIK all retail boxed versions of Vista come with both 32 bit and 64 bit but OEM versions are always either or. Dell will send you the 64 bit version for free if you call and ask for it though.

Well, I'm an official owner of a Dell XPS M1530 - I decided on one over an HP laptop because after toting around an aging Compaq Presario 2100 (no built in wireless, slow HDD, 512MB Memory...) I wanted a machine that has some kick, while looking sleek and professional. Never thought I would get one of these Dell things, but wow - the XPS line is very nice.

I'd take some pictures, but my guess is that most of you already know what the thing looks like. :p

    Anywho, here's the specs:
LCD: 1280x800 (I think it's an.. LG? Those are the ones that didn't have the 'grainy' problem, right? Cause the screen is crystal clear.)
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo T8100
    Memory: 4GB Crucial PC5300 DDR2
    HDD: 250GB 5400RPM
    Video: GeForce 8600M w/ 256MB Dedicated
    Optical Drive: BD-R/RW + DVD-R+RW

It's just a *slight* upgrade from the Athlon XP 2000+ I was running in the old Compaq.

Looking forward to playing around some more with it. Sure seems like a nice machine.

I have had mine since february, and have had nothing but a great experience with everything. started with t7500, A08 bios, 3 gb ram, 200gb momentus hd, x32 vista ultimate, no turbo cache memory, no broadband card, no tuner, oem sound(sigmatel), Now my sig says it all. There is not much more that i can do except Intel x-25 80 GB SSD (SLC technology) and x9000 cpu. When they become mainstream and price is right, i am there.

A few weeksago I too changed from desktop to laptop computer. Having my desktop comp was always a lot of fun because every little I took apart everything and put together again. Well not that often but once a month. Now having laptop I'm dying to open it and for example clean the thermal paste and put some new brand name thermal paste on chips.

Are laptops more sensitive than desktops, and should I be extra carefull when opening it?(you know what i mean) ;)

6.Lastly, did I make the right choice!?!?!
