    Yeah it's really cool!
    I'm lovin it.

There is a CHANCE (it's not 100% sure and even if you get it u might not dislike it) that you'll end up with the grainy screen though cuz the 1900x1200 screen is Samsung only

M 1530 is set by Dell to go on sale tomorrow, 5 Dec, as part of Dell's holiday promos. Some of Dell's on-line coupons are blown out and not working. Will see tomorrow what the sales indicate!

Ok, now i got a little scared. - I can't say I've heard much positive things about the samsung panels, but i have never heard any complaints about 1900x1200, just lower res. screens, but i don't think there is to many with that high res screen...

    Are all Samsung-screens grainy?

What, exactly, does 'dual channel mode' mean and how do you determine whether your machine is running that way? Is it supposed to run in dual channel mode with 3gb? I have a 1530 with 3gb of ram. Apologies in advance for being such a nub.

to ramchips of same size works better together than one 2 x 1 gb chips...

2gb x 1gb won't dual channel, but 2gb + 2 gb will... I don't know if you will notice much difference than the lack of one gb ram...

hey guys, just ordered my own xps m1530, refurbished. it came with the dell wireless-g card, but i was just wondering if i could make my own upgrades after it arrived and order a different wireless card from newegg or some other place? thanks for the help. i usually would go for the wireless n card, but this was one of the few refurbished ones that had a WUXGA screen =P

Yes you can upgrade the wireless card. It is quite easy, actually. There is a panel in the middle of the laptop when you flip it over. It contains 3 slots. One is for wireless, one is for bluetooth, and the third one can be used for either WWAN (cellular internet) or Intel Turbo Memory. Simply buy any mini-PCIexpress network card (such as the Intel 4965ABGN or the 5100 or the 5300). After you remove teh screws holding down the panel, carefully remove the antenna cables (white, blue, and grey are the colors I believe). Then take out the old card by pulling the tabs (it should pop up and be at ~45 degree angle). Pull it out. Then install the new one by following the same directions in reverse.

On thing that you may experience though, is that there may be only 2 instead of 3 antenna wires. Because yours came with a G card, it may not support the third antenna (the wireless G specification has a feature known as MIMO which utilizes multiple antennas. however, again, yours may have only 2). With 2 antennas I think you can still use 802.11n. Not sure though.

I have the WUXGA panel as well, and it is so nice. ;) Although my friend has a XPS m1530 with the 1440x900 LED panel and man that thing can get super BRIGHT!

I wonder if it is not annoying to work, when the headphones jack is plugged in the front? As I am going to leave my loudspeakers jack put in.

    Hey people,

For some reason, Fn+F3 isn't doing anything. This happened suddenly. Before it used to open up the battery info.

Can someone please let me know what could be happening here? Thanks.

    Edit:
Also, I just noticed Fn+F8 doesn't bring up the available display options.. those icons or anything.

_Dell Quickset is fine, but I don't see anything there as well in the display settings panel. Fn+arrows for brightness works fine though!!

    Whats happening?

    Edit 2:

Ah, nevermind. Reinstalled Quickset and its all fine now. Uufffff.. Thanks anyways.

I use use a microfiber cloth and cleaning solution on it that i was using to clean the screen and keyboard with. Also what type of material is the midnight blue cover is made of. What do you mean by "streaks"? I have the black one, and if it ever gets dirty i just use the cloth with a little bit of water and its good as new... although on the edge I believe the finish is coming off (it's becoming slightly glossy on the edge)

still What i should have said was the the residue form the microfiber mitt i was usingstill being damp form using it on the screen to clean first and than wiping down the cover lid. You can't really notice unless you close up on it.Shouls i be able to wipe it down with a little bit o water like you did with your black one? Thanks.

mmm I dont know what kind of mitt you are using, most of the microfiber mitts i've seen for cleaning stuff don't use any kind of solution / residue. But in any event, you should be safe with using just a bit of water... I dont think it will make matters any worse.

hey i just installed Kubuntu 8.10 on my XPS and was quite impressed by the GUI of Kubuntu,it gives head on competition to Vista and provides more features than Vista, such as a 3D Desktop, etc etc but the some of the function keys dont work such as :scroll lock, battery, sysrq, etc.
I talked about it on the Kubuntu IRC and they said that these keys are not supported in newer versions of linux.
So now i have a Dual boot system with vista and linux(havent opened Vista for a week :D)
i would recommend this OS to everyone

Hi all, new member here, and new owner of an M1530. I've owned an Inspiron 700M for the last 4 years and it was time to get something with a little more screen real estate for photo editing.

Just bought the XPS on Ebay last week. It's a refurb with about 11 months remaining warranty:

    XPS M1530 (Black)
    T5800 (2.0 GHz)
    4GB Ram
    WUXGA Display (1920x1200)
802.11 a/b/g card (already ordered Next-Gen Intel n card to replace)
Blu-Ray Burner (slot drive) with DVD Burn capability
Nvidia 8400 GS 128 MB Video Card
    320 GB 5400 rpm HD
    Vista Home Premium
    6 cell Battery

    Paid $1045 shipped.

    Questions:

    1. Decent deal? Did I overpay? I really wanted both the WUXGA diaply and the Blu-Ray drive, and these were hard to find together. I jumped on the first one under $1400 I found. I configured this exact system on dell.com and it came to about $1470, so it seemed reasonable, but I'd love your thoughts.

    2. Anyone try the 3rd party knock off batteries available on Ebay? I'm considering one in a 9cell variety.

    3. I don't do any gaming on laptops (that's what my desktop is for), but I'd like to be able to do some pretty intensive photo editing and/or High-Def video transcoding, which I'm thinking this processor might be a little light for. What do you think? Is it worth upgrading the processor to maybe a T9300 or something? Will I see a big jump in performance?

    4. What kind of battery life can I expect with a 6 cell with screen brightness most of the way up, wireless active, in Vista's Balanced power mode?

Thanks all, I look forward to making this site one of my daily forum reads. :)

Well since it is a refurb, you should have bought from Dell Outlet. Unfortunately you got ripped off really bad. If your ebay seller has a good feedback rating, hopefully he has a good retun policy too..

Really? I searched on Dell Outlet for one equipped like this for many weeks and never saw anything close to this price (including the WUXGA screen and Blu-Ray burner), even with the insane coupons they were offering recently.

There is a return policy, but there's a pretty nasty (15%) restocking fee. So you're saying I probably couldn't resell this for around $950 or so? Maybe I'll just have to bite the bullet on this one...

    SLOW BIOS BOOT!

Hi Guys, i currently have the a12 bios and when i turn on my 1530, it takes at least 30-40 seconds for the bar to load up. It stops 80% of the way and then freezes then the dvd drive makes a noise and loads up. Like i dont know why it is slow to startup. What factors are causing this? Computer works fine. its just the Startup dell bios screen that takes forever. Normally it should just zip right through. HELP ME PLEASE. thanks

I have the same problem, wait for it to finish and the next reboot is fine.
It happens when I force shut down before Windows starts booting.

Guys what is this CUDA and what does it do can you explain it to me.

I do have a question though. Can someone tell me if it comes with the vista install cd, not a recovery but a genuine install cd? I am planning on doing a clean install and I will need the vista cd.

I've got XP installed and I've never really been able to restart my computer fully. All the other functions work pretty well, but when I go to restart or shut down, Windows quits out and the screen goes black. However the fan keeps spinning and the Battery blue LED on the front blinks occasionally. The only way I can turn it off is to hold down the power button.

I know this can't be good, but I've been doing it for the better part of a year now. I need to update the BIOS to A12 to hopefully solve some fan issues, but the self-installer can't shut down completely to complete the process.

Anyone else had any issues with this?

You cannot upgrade the graphics card. That is one of the things you should never skimp on while buying a new laptop. And if you mess with the processor you'll most likely void your warranty.
The dell website has a place where you put in your order number and check order status.

Everything should be good enough except the graphics card. I believe even the low end configs come with 3GB RAM. If you don't play games you will never need more that what you got. If you do however the 8600GT is roughly 3-4 times more powerful than the base model. Dell has a 21 day return I believe so you can see if it works for you.

It's the full DVD, it will install Vista fully without any other programs with it. You will then use the driver's CD or download them from Dell's site.

    Hi All,
I seem to be having a slight problem with my m1530. I normally turn it off with hibernation in Vista HP. But after a few minutes, the laptop decides to turn itself on... Since the lid is closed, after a few minutes it shuts off again. Does anybody know what is causing this?
    Thanks.

Your BIOS may have auto-on enabled, check that setting (something to do with 'wake on..'. Cause the BIOS is the only thing that can wake the computer automatically from hibernation.

No, you can return it and order a different system.
