I saw it on the Dell site earlier this month but can't find the page. I later found it in the Dell discount thread on whirlpool. I'm a member there under the same name.

I can understand that you probably don't want to go through the process, but it is something that I do, being a student without much money (The Rudd bonus helps a bit). Also the fact that we pay a 40% premium over the US makes me want to shave as much off that excess of as possible.

As of right now mine still shows "In Production" and I ordered mine on Sept. 25th. It looks like Dell is holding to their EDD.

MidtownHD, you are correct. I fat fingered on my ETA date (typo), it is November 20 (not 10th). Very sorry about that.

Guys, there is a part shortage on the 1645. I do not know what part it is? Hopefully Dell will get it in soon as possible?

i received an email from dell japan yesterday and they are offering me to change my Dell Wireless (TM) 1520 integrated wireless LAN Half-Mini Cards (802.11a/b/g/n) to Dell Wireless 1397 Half-Miniカ(802.11b/g) because of shortage. This maybe one of the reasons.

In the UK - for some unknown reason - The Dell Wireless (TM) 1520 integrated wireless LAN Half-Mini Cards (802.11a/b/g/n) is not available for the SXPS 16 with core i7 processors?!!! Only with Core2Duo?!!

Since the US version comes with "Intel® 5300 WLAN Wireless-N (3x3) Mini Card," I wonder if US production is affected.

Thanks for the reply mate. I didn't even know the Core i7's were available to buy here yet as I've been looking in the business section, and for some reason, they aren't listed there. Only in the home section. It was only after you mentioned that you were waiting for the 5300 that I said "Hang on a minute, where's he getting his i7 from in the UK?" :D

I just got onto Dell about this actually and they said "Usually it is required for gaming. That's why this option is not available in business sections. As it is not required." I then mentioned the possibility of using it for CPU-intensive business applications like CAD software and he said "Maybe in the future it will be available".

Anyway, it's not a big deal. It's just easier to reclaim VAT through the business site.

Out of curiosity, why are you waiting for the Intel 5300 wireless card?

Actually I want to buy it for business as well. I hope they will make me invoice without VAT if I buy from home section. Core i7 model isn't listed even in the US business section so there's no way it will become available in the UK anytime soon :p

Im waiting for the 5300 because the one they are offering now doesn't have n-draft support :( And Intels 5300 is a very good card - ill be using wifi a lot so this makes it very important to have quality card.

As I mentioned in a previous post Dell won't sell to you without VAT, you claim the VAT back from the taxman if you are registered for VAT if you aren't then you can't claim the VAT back.

well it sounds like dell is rebuilding my order and giving me free overnight on my laptops as well as "bumping me to the front of the manufacturing line," whatever that ACTUALLY means will be seen.

Hopefuly the nightmare is finally going to be over and they'll get these things made for us.

    Which backpack did you purchase?
the Win7 you're talking about, is it the upgrade dvd from dell?
don't you need some info from the laptop to request the free upgrade like its serial #?

Sorry, only for Australia. Do you know of any tech / notebook forums in New Zealand, maybe try there. Or ask someone locally who knows there IT stuff.

I just had a look at the pricing and it is even more expensive then Australia (even taking into account the exchange rate), there must be some coupons hidden somewhere

Does anybody have knowledge about using one of the new Studio XPS 16 laptops with an external digital monitor. I know the Studio XPS 16 has an analog socket and that will hook up to my 24" Dell Monitor but I would prefer a DVI connection.

These laptops support HDMI digital. If you don't have a monitor with a HDMI connection, you may be able to find an adapter which will allow you to plug the laptop into it.

Why get an adapter if he already has the VGA? Only plug-n-play, And might wanna check the CCC to see if the display recognition is on manual or automatic (default) so that you can enable it.

But as said this laptop supports Display Port and HDMI, so you can use that to for higher resolutions.

He did mention that he preferred a DVI connection which is digital. HDMI is also digital, VGA is only analog. This was the reason for mentioning the adapter for hdmi to dvi so that he can stay digital. :D

You can use a HDMI -> DVI cable for digital signal. Sound won't be available, so you have to use the headphone jack to output sound or just plain laptop speakers

Do they call it anything else? All I see on my confirmation email and the status page is my Order Number, Dell Purchase ID, and Customer Number. I have bothered to register for my upgrade thinking that I needed to wait for my laptop to arrive in the next week or two.

    Thanks,

Thanks guys. I didn't know that I could get an adapter from HDMI to DVI. I will google for the device. I assume that the high quality I get with a DVI from the computer will be the same if using an HDMI adapter to DVI.

I do not see an "Invoices" on my order status page. I do see a parts list though, and there isn't a service tag.

I have a feeling this may have to do with orders being built vs. still awaiting production (regardless of the 'in production' status).

Really I feel Dell has pulled a fast one on a lot of people with these new XPS systems. When I ordered as well as everyone else. We were being led to believe that this was, in fact, an order that was going to be going into production. But actually, since they did not even have the parts, and were knowingly still awaiting their arrival, they should have listed this as a "pre-order".

This really is terrible service and while I understood I'd have to wait for this laptop, it seems that people are still unsure if their already far-off Estimated Delivery Dates will be met.

I ordered my i7 XPS 1646 on October 1st. My EDD was October 30, then after 3 or 4 days it switched to November 3rd and remains that today. I can only hope for a sooner delivery, or at the very least, have it be on time.

I do understand that Dell is at the mercy of Intel and it's other providers for their parts. But they should indicate on the order status somehow that is the case instead of deceiving there well-paying customers.

willybug: Check out newegg. You can by an HDMI to DVI cable, or an adapter and use a normal HDMI cord if you wish (or do the reverse, but I'd assume you'd leave the adapter attached to the monitor, which would be more secure since the laptop's HDMI does not allow any kind of fastening). They have some pretty cheap HDMI cords, as does Monoprice.

Did you get the upgrade for a 1645 you have on order? I admit to being pretty dense sometimes, but I am not seeing and invoice there. I'm guessing because my 1645 is still In Production and my card hasn't been charged because my order hasn't shipped yet.

No I dont have a 1645 on order this was on my 1640. It was on there well before shipping though. But knowing the way Dell is it may be different for every order.

A few weeks ago, Dell was having major trouble with online order statuses: exact same thing with me, I put in everything from the purchase ID to my customer number, nada, nothing. Then one day it randomly worked.

If you give Dell a call, though, they know the EDDs.

The lady in india (or wherever they're located, forgive my stereotype but i have had a tough time understanding 90% of the people I've spoken with) misprocessed our financing paperwork and got my wife's DPA account screwed up just like my account got screwed up and now it has to be validated.

Lucky for me (i guess) my account validation letter showed up today and I was able to re-open/unlock my account.

So in the morning, the planets might align, pigs might fly, a new comet may be found, aliens could be discovered on another planet, a cure for cancer and aids might be found, AND (I say and because in this scenario its all happening in one day) the meaning of life is determined..... if all of this happened I STILL WONT BE AS SURPRISED AS I WILL BE IF MY ORDER FINALLY GETS PROCESSED AND STARTED.

They totally shot my request for upgrades down and offered me a bag for ONE of my laptops... Nice... I just dont @#$&%@# care anymore. I need new computers and Dell has me by the balls because there isn't a better computer without going up $600 or more in costs.

A little OT but did anyone with a current Studio XPS 1640 get any extras with the notebook? For example, when my friend got the XPS 1530, it came with a sleeve, expresscard remote control, pleather CD wallet, Creative headphones, and also a micro fibre cloth.

Nope definitely not there on my status page, but thanks for trying. I guess I will just need to practice a little patience. Maybe Dell will surpirise me and just include the Window 7 disk with my order, but I'm not holding my breath.

    Backpack was this: http://go.notebookreview.com/?id=52...sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&sku=A1614033

Regarding Windows, I have a friend who works for Microsoft and they got me a copy of Win7 Professional at a great price. First thing I'm doing when my 1645 arrives is formatting and installing. :)

IMO Ultimate isn't worth double the cost of Professional.

If networking is for you, Professional, if not Home Premium is more than enough
