How can I be sure I'm getting the Windows 7 upgrade? I'm putting Win7 Pro on mine, but would like to put the Vista that ships with it and the upgrade on a family member's computer.
-
If anyone wants to remote into their Windows 7 computer and print, it requires Ultimate or Enterprise to use the new Windows Easy Print feature. Professional does not have it.
Very handy for working from home and still having the ability to print to your home printers. -
Professional includes "Remote Desktop Host", just like Ultimate. Or are you referring to "DirectAccess" (which Professional doesn't include)?
-
I wanted to comment, if you're running Windows Vista Home, you can NOT upgrade to Professional, you must upgrade to either Windows 7 Home or Ultimate. However, if you do upgrade from say Windows Vista Home to Windows 7 Home, you can upgrade to Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate, via Microsofts "Anytime Upgrade" option.
Here, this explains everything:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...A1-5BAB-401F-BBF5-00F0EE7FE0FB&displaylang=en
or here:
-
Neither. I'm referring to Easy Print.
This gives the user who is remoting into their Windows 7 machine from home (on an XP or Vista or even a Windows 7 PC), the ability for all their LOCAL printers to be redirected on their Windows 7 PC. In the past that was not possible unless you had the same printer drivers on both systems, or used third party software such as Thin Print (and rarely worked for networked printers). -
SXPS 16 don't have the i7 in this end of the world yet...
Only the Alienware M15x does... and its pretty expensive...
I can't wait to check the prices when the i7-SXPS come out. -
Where are you located?
-
Yea...no.
He clearly said "this end of the world", meaning where he lives. -
*bump - did anyone who has a current Studio XPS get stuff like this?
-
One thing I wanted to note here is that, through Digital River, if you choose Windows 7 Professional, you get the full retail version, not the upgrade version. However their Home Premium is an upgrade version.
Also, I believe you CAN infact go from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional, but as that chart says, it is not an upgrade, but a custom (clean) install.
Explained: Someone with a Vista Home Premium key can still use the Windows 7 Professional Upgrade, just needs to clean install. (Not a fact, but I'm pretty sure) I'm going from Vista Ultimate down to Windows 7 Professional on my desktop because there is nothing I need from Windows Ultimate that isn't in 7 Professional. Plus I did the Pro Upgrade pre-order. There is no way I'd pay full price for the pro upgrade and deffinately not the ultimate upgrade. (There was no discount on the Ultimate upgrade for a pre-order, which is BS, they really screwed us Vista Ultimate with unfulfilled promisses) -
I dont think anything is included except for a manual, cds, and a covering cloth. You can check it out at youtube, just search for sxps 16 unboxing. I have also purchased a M1530 last year (got stolen unfortunetely) and xps lines back then were generous enough to give us goodies, but not this year i guess due to poor economy.
-
Thanks, that kinda sucks to hear, but understandable. Not a deal breaker, but something extra is always nice to have.
-
WOW! Dell used to include tons of little details...at least the XPS M1330 that a friend bought some years ago, came with some little perks...now nothing?
-
So i cancelled my previous order.. partly because i wanted windows 7 installed, not the upgrade. Also interesting to note for CANADIANS you cannot order the RGBLED screen on the website however if you call the sales team and have them configure it you can get it for 400 cad. I also got the 3 year warranty with the complete care and the DVD burner. HOWEVER in the end I only paid 200$ more than my previous order, Negotiate with them! It took me 3 hours on the phone but i saved 400$. 133$ / hour is time well spent if you ask me. Below is the new config. EDD is 11/16

After I left a email about the status order how my EDD (Nov. 20th) was way ahead. They finally decided to give me a call this morning telling me that the reason why the delay is that due to an option which we can preinstall windows 7 or something (I got the call like half-awake).
"As per our conversation I am keeping a close follow up of the order and would keep you updated about it on timely manner. I will follow up with you until the issue is resolved, in case you need any additional help regarding this case, please feel free to contact us and we will be happy to assist you."
yea right... -
All right, so the people with October 26th ship dates (who opted for the free 3-5 day shipping) should be getting SHIPPED notifications relatively soon!
~Ibrahim~
EDIT: Oh, yeah.........I found out today that my college gets a 7% discount on the SXPS 16.................not even funny. -
You can call DELL and have them match the price, it is a hassle though. You may also need to try several times.
I think the prices went higher the previous days, so replacing the order will not likely to cut the price to the old prices if you were able to score a good deal before. -
what do you mean by "an option which we can preinstall windows 7 or something"?
When did you order yours?
@ others - the 7% EPP discount is the same 7% from universities... -
I love the *scripted verbiage*...so many times when I have spoken with a Specialist..that has been told to me..
BUT, when they tell that to me, I expect follow thru.
If they are good and true to their word, they will stay w/you til your order ships.
You can, call your Rep...(or Jaguar Sales)....and see what they can do to *accommodate* for that...They may or may not. It doesn't hurt to try, since your order is still on production!
Cin... -
I called the order status line and my order is in production in the build stage but it is estimated to ship 10/23. I hope that's correct, I ordered on 9/26. Do they deliver on Saturdays? The number I called is from post #555 on the Dell Order Stages Wiki: 1-800-283-2210, prompts 3, 2, 1, 1.
-
I'm not sure, but the dell guy was like: the reason for the delay was the fact that they're trying to add an option where people who are going to have their systems shipped after the initial release would have the chance to preinstall win7 instead of vista. MAYBE the reason for the delay was dell trying to make a decision whether or not have the newer systems shipped with win7 considering how late they get shipped. Well the guy was probably bsing to make me feel better -_-. Anyone else had a smiliar response? Try calling them and ask why the delay?
I just checked my order status and it seems to still be in pre-production with the EDD of 11/19.. well its a day better than my original EDD. I purchased mine on 10/15 -
My order is suppose to ship today with an EDD of 10/26. I have next day shipping. Not sure what carrier they will ship the package with. I guess we will have to see.
- Garrett -
Shouldn't you already be on the shipment phase if it's due today? Man, now I'm getting scared, if it doesn't get before november 13, I won't see it until december 20.
-
Thanks for the number, Lando3000.
I made my order on 10/16 and it's currently in Pre-Production with an estimated shipping date of 11/6 (with next day delivery, so if shipped on the 6th, it'll arrive Monday morning).
Hopefully the dates are accurate
-
I ordered mine 10/6 and have an EDD of 11/9. Maybe I should start bugging them to find out when I'm actually going to get it.
-
Hey, neat. Called the number and it is in the build stage, with an estimated shipping date of 11/6. I'm considering bumping up to next day as I'm going away on the 12th.
-
OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG!
So, since it's so late in the order, they can't get my the 7% discount, but I don't care because you know why?
IT'S SHIPPING TODAY! That's what she said: it should be shipping today and you should get a tracking number in a short while!
OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG.
~Ibrahim~ -
Ibrahim: how come you have it shipping today? I just called dell order support and they told me that they are backordered on i7 cpu's. He said that although my EDD is still 10/27 for now but he can't promise that I would get it by then. My discussion never got to the shipping stage. My status is still 'in-production'.
-
She probably lied to you just to get you off the phone
jk, but seriously, mine is still "in production" with an EDD of 10-26
maybe things will change later into the afternoon. -
One thing that I don't get is that my local Best Buy and also amazon.com are showing a couple of Asus's and Toshiba Qosimo's with mobile i7's in-stock & ready to be delivered by 10/26. I ordered my XPS16 on 9/28 with an EDD of 10/27 and I still don't know whether I will get it by then or not because the dell rep. told me that they are backordered in the i7 mobile CPU's.
-
Ordered my XPS 1645 (i720QM) today via my dell business account manager.
Talked him into matching the advertised price on the UK "Home" section- so my i7 XPS with 4gb, 500gb hd, 4670 1gb and 16" RGB LED screen came to £1079 (inc vat).
Lead time is pretty hefty though - currently 24th November
but who cares at that price for a sexy quad i7 mobile rig with a gaming vid card
#Wonderdog -
If there is a backorder, I wonder if it's for all of the i7 variants or just the 720QM (obviously the most popular).
*crosses his fingers that the 820QM isn't back-ordered* -
don't know about the 820QM, but the dell rep was talking about the i7's in general.
-
In the UK, the intel wireless cards are also on a "no ETA" back order status(according to my AM), so I had to take the dell wifi card just to get in the queue.
Looking forward to getting the laptop, should slaughter WoW etc
-
Perhaps it's a matter of custom configuration? If Best Buy is selling pre-configured systems, then it makes sense that there could still be shortages. Keep in mind that there's a difference between a vendor purchasing large numbers of identically configured systems for resale and a single person ordering a custom spec machine.
-
The UK Dell link to configure the laptop is currently not working. After choosing the model, then the support package the page says unable to configure the identified product. Sure it's the right link because have been checking it all week. Not sure if this is deliberate due to demand or temporary.
-
mjbarnard, you could give Dell a call and ask them.
And if you can bargain perhaps you end up with a better deal than the one online. Dell reps do that often... -
I ordered relatively early (9/25), though, too. Oddly, my machine used to say 10/26 but about a week after I ordered it changed to 10/29.
I don't know. I actually called her about the discount, but then I asked her about the status, if she knew anything more.
I believe she said the machine was already made/finished, but it hadn't been loaded onto the truck yet and it would be then when I would get the tracking number.
We'll see!
~Ibrahim~ -
I'm still waiting for my laptop's dates to be updated since I'm apparently going to be skipping the queue in the mfg process, but my current date is 11/13/09.
Hoping that it gets bumped sooner then that since I'd be receiving mine ~10/30 if they hadn't messed up my first order.
They really ought to have a sub-status that tells you if your laptops in a queue waiting to be built, or actually being built. -
Just curious if you have checked to you status via the automated dial in system to see what that is showing? I have the same configuration as you and my EDD was 2 days after yours. Hoping these orders are finally starting to move along.
-
The dial-in system showed exactly what the website said: 10/29/2009.
~Ibrahim~ -
On the canadian Dell site the XPS 16 with core i7 is no more available but it was on last 3 weeks....
-
at least you don't have to pay the EPP us price

$101,353 Base Price not too shabby... just 3,041/month -
Argentina. Sorry I didn't answer before, I just saw your post.
-
What the...what is wrong with that??
-
Don't worry guys, Dell has you back. They are offering a whopping $174 instant discount so you stingies don't have to spend too much
-
Illegal Operation Notebook Evangelist
LOL, that is funny
Starting Price $101,527
Total Savings $174
Subtotal $101,353
? that's one crazy typo
I think I'll buy one...that deal is too good to pass up
-
Someone please post it in the failblog hahahahaha
Pricing FAIL! -
I hate those stupid instant savings. I doubt there's really any discount being given, just arbitrary numbers.
I liked it before when they have, upgrade this for half-off, or how about I get 10% AFTER I select everything...
