Has it actually been demonstrated that the i7s are "power-hungry?" I was under the impression that the i7s were actually efficient comparatively and that the reason behind the jump up to 45 watts is the integration of a replacement for the North-South bridge in Calpella.

i7s are very efficient (more minutes per WHr). TDP is a poor measure of actual power consumption. -
"The reason we are taking more time is because of the popularity of these models, we are taking more time to fill them all." --Direct quote from a manager in their sales department that I talked to about changing the address on my order. He said I could cancel it and then go to the back of the line if I wanted to change my address. I decided against that, so UPS or whatever will be next-day-airing it to a fake address in Rhode Island, because evidently that's what it takes to correct an address.
The bright side is that the delays aren't technical in nature, it just has to do with the fact that everyone seems to want this laptop. Not surprising as this is currently the longest thread on the frontpage! -
That is if the guy is stating the truth and not just giving you a BS answer. Even if there are delays due to the fact of popularity, why has it that many of us who ordered at the end of Sept. are getting delays and bumped to the end of Nov? As of right now, I am taking everything that Dell has to say with a grain of salt. I am trying to get in contact with my work's Dell rep for the government to see what he has to say and what they can do for me.

I canceled my order and just ordered an HP DV8t. The build date is expect to be 11/10. I'm going to follow this thread since I am very interested in the outcome and to see if the XPS 16 lives up to the hype. I hope so for you guys who are holding on. I'll let you know if I end up with the HP before the Dell starts showing up.
Good luck to you all, I really hope this gets resolved for you. -
It'll get resolved, that's for sure. The question is when.

My order hasn't changed yet, and I'm still have the old part no. for the Intel wifi card. Are they canceling the orders right before the edd, or a week earlier?
Anyone who ordered on Oct 16 here or around that week? Has your order changed? -
I believe that all of the above are guesses at the reason behind the delay and that it's more likely that Dell is simply stalling for some reason unbeknownst to us. There are far too many different excuses being thrown around by folks at Dell.
Regardless, I expect that my order will be delayed either Thursday or Friday of this week, since my expected shipping day is Friday. -
Knock wood, there are a few of us who had their EDDs updated but have not had their orders canceled. My EDD got push back a week on the webpage to next Monday on the day it was due to ship. Just got an email today saying it was delayed. We will see what happens. If it really is going to get delivered next Monday, I should be going into the boxing stage in the next few days.
-
My order was first delayed by one week and then it was canceled and re-ordered the day it was suppose to ship on the first delay.
e.g. first ordered on 9/25 with an EDD of 10/26. It was suppose to ship on 10/23. On 10/23 it was delayed to an EDD of 11/2 and to be shipped on 10/30. On 10/30, I got an email stating that the order had been canceled and re-ordered to change the wifi part number. I would assume others who have this delay had the same happen to them. And to the others who have not experienced this will soon.

The reason I'm asking is that when they pushed my order back to 11/9 the hotline mysteriously stopped giving me a ship date. Before that it would always say this order is expected to ship by 10/30. It switched to: This is all the information I have at this time". This made me suspicious that I was due to be canceled before they sent it out.
This is just an FYI. I don't have a dog in this race anymore, just interesting to watch. -
I wouldnt fear that much.
HP claimed Nov 4 for the Envy 15, and most users got it today.
Perhaps Dell is giving a lot of "air space"/overhead for the date, since this laptop has sold a lot and they want/need to keep up with the supply. -
-
-
BTW, if you are looking for some information on the CPU, go to the ENVY 15 Owners Lounge, on the front page it is posted some results of CPU Z and HWMonitor.
-
ETA: I spoke to a live person too and they said the same thing. If it doesn't ship tomorrow, I'll be on the phone asking why. -
-
Well I called today regarding my system to see if they would push back the EDD. The 2 ladies I spoke to assured me 'there are no shortages right now for the studio xps 16' I find that very hard to believe. I have also been assured my order will ship on or before Nov. 13 which I also find very hard to believe. We'll see. What about the people who ordered end of September and now have EDD's of late Nov and early Dec??? I would cancel immediately.
-
-
-
Oh the irony of all this. My Dell rep called this morning and said all Studio XPS16's were on halt in production because of a part shortage.
Which rep is right? Which one is wrong? Who knows...they probably are all making stuff up at this point to prevent customers from canceling. -

Just tried to check my order status online.
*ahem*
"Order Status
Information Temporarily Unavailable"
Bummer. The sales manager said he'd call back today to give me a status update. It'll be interesting to see what he has to say. Haha especially after he told me last week "Orders placed in September are just now starting to ship, so we expect yours to ship either Monday or Tuesday, and do not anticipate anymore delays." Lies! Especially since I've never asked for them to call me with status updates. I mean, it's not like I called and pestered them for an explanation and they just told me something to get off the phone. He made the effort to call, why not be truthful? It doesn't bother me too much though. As long as I get it by mid-December, I'm good. -

I don't doubt it. Dell use to be a good reliable company who strived quality. If my EDD gets changed thats it I'm canceling. It's hard to be a student and not have a laptop. Waiting for W7 was hard enough. I really do want the XPS 16. It was the top of my choice. -
What are some other laptops that have some of the same features as the 1645? If my order does have a serious delay (which I'm expecting now) I'd like to know what else I can get. Specifically I'd like the core i7 and a good 15-16 inch screen with 1080p. My order was about $1800 with the blu ray and a 2 year accidental damages warranty.
-

-
I ordered:
18" 1920x1080
820QM
8GB memory
1TB (2x500GB) HD's
Bluetooth
blu-ray player
Only things missing from DV8t that I will miss:
RGB LED (Only heard about, never saw)
Lighted keyboard
My price as configured was about $2200. The same price w/ only 4GB was $1800, cheaper than my dell configuration. My dell config was:
820QM
4GB
DVD
RGBLED screen
500GB HD
which was $1900 approx.
I'm not pitching HP, Just fed up with Dell for wasting a month of my time.
Also, Purely my own experience, but I had to cancel the HP order and re-order because of a new $200 off coupon I listed above and they were more than happy to assist, even though it cost them $200. A world of difference from talking to Dell. -
http://www.logicbuy.com/deals/hp-pavilion-dv8-18-inch-laptop/14626.aspx -
I definitely need 16. If i was using it primarily at home, I'd switch in a heartbeat, but I'm gonna be lugging it to work and back every day. 16 is even bigger than I wanted, but I got tempted by the screen.
18 will just be too much.
-
SXPS and I are not meant to be together. My 2nd order has been cancelled by mistake again. What a waste, my original order placed was way back Sept 25.
I will go to Frys and pick up an 18 incher. http://laptops.toshiba.com/laptops/qosmio/X500/X505-Q850
I only lug it around one weekend a month anyway (for army drill trainings) and it stays at home the rest of the time. Not to much different from my 17 inch monster XPS GEN 2 so I think I will be happy with this. It has 2 drives too, primary is a SSD.
Thank you dell for trying to sell a product you never had. -
-
Yeah, this is getting frustrating. I wouldn't even mind waiting if I could get an honest answer instead of 20 different ones from various Dell reps located in India. What's worse is half of them are terrible at speaking English and I certainly feel bad for this -- but I always have to ask them to repeat what they said to understand them.
Anyway, if they don't cancel my order by the end of December (and it doesn't ship by then) I'll just have to request my bank to refuse them from withdrawing and explain my situation.
This is just terrible; I've owned HP and Toshiba laptops in the past and this is by far my worst experience -- my very first Dell order. -
-
The big problem that I think we are all having is that Dell just keeps bullting us. If they would just say "Look, we ran out of this part and we're sorry" or "Hey there is a issue with heat on this laptop" or "Hey the wifi card isn't compatible" I think all of us would be totally cool (if not a little disappointed). If dell is trying to avoid orderes being cancelled due to delays this is the opposite way to handle it.
-
-
They will refuse to cancel the new order. My business partner has already tried to cancel multiple times today and they refuse.
I think you are on good grounds to refuse the order and never pay, but do not think it is easy to cancel the order unless you get an email (as I did) that gives you that option due to the delay. -
-
I have no clue why everyone keeps calling Dell for status updates! There's only two reasons to call Dell at this point: to cancel their order or to demand some sort of compensation for their troubles. I know all of you really deep down know what you're going to hear from Dell but you call anyway and then post the excuse of the moment here. If you're not going to cancel or demand freebies, why call at all? Other than the automatic status line that is.
-
I have been following this thread for awhile. I ordered on 10-16 and as of now my order is unchanged and status shows what it always has since the order. EDD 11-12 on the order detail and NA on my main account page. I ordered the 720qm with bluetooth,4gb,WLED1080p,wifi5300. my wifi5300 number is still the old number.
-
-
I ordered 720qm with RGB LED. Order date 09/28. Current EDD 11-10. Two separate dell reps told me that the base of the laptop is still bacordered and is expected to be there on 11-04. Actually, last week i was told the same base-backordered story with the expected delivery date of 10-30. are you all also getting the same excuses?
-
Well by going to my 'order tracking' link it's still listed as 11/19/2009. However, if I log on to my billing account it shifts from January 1, 2010 to N/A.
I certainly hope it doesn't take 5 months to build a laptop. Order shortage or not, it doesn't take that long to produce some chips, cheap plastic, or aluminum -- whatever pieces they happen to be 'short' of. -
-
Do you know if the dimensions are the same as the 1640?
I saw someone post in the bag forum that the dimensions are
Width: 15.15" (384.9mm)
Height: 0.95" (24.1mm) front / 1.34" (33.95mm) back
Depth: 10.02" (254.6mm)
same as the new 1645? I know noone has it yet but anyone ask or anything?
also isn't depth and height mixed up? -
No, the depth and height are correct. The depth is the long part from the front of the notebook to the back. The height is the closed thickness of the front and back.
