Well, I live in Vancouver, WA. ~5 minutes to drive into Oregon (no tax). I got a bunch of friends that live there, so I'm shipping it to one of their houses to avoid paying tax.

Is it true that this machine does not have gigabit Ethernet? I only see 10/100.

    Cheers,

Great price, how did you get it? That config on the EPP site comes out to 1533 for me and I have been checking it on a daily basis since I ordered on Saturday.

Long story short, when i called in to get some quotes the operator who makes sure you get to the right department didn't get me to EPP, so I ended up with a regular sales agent who gave me a quote from an evalue code that picks up that laptop as specced for 1299.00. If you call and ask for the xps 16 with those specs and ask what the code is they should give it to you. I then took that quote to an EPP rep who had to add the 7%.

The one thing i forgot to factor in was the extra 79.99 for the total care (it came with 2y limited, total care was an extra) but otherwise i didn't change any specs.

I am shipping to a friend in Oregon (about a 10 minute drive) and oregon residents dont pay taxes, so if you ship to Oregon (or montana, or the other state with no sales tax) then you wont pay tax.

Just paid for it, estimated arrival is 11/24/09 the RGB screen is delayed :(

    Fantastic deal.

    Guy with the 1.6Ghz/1.73GHz question:

I mean, what would you expect with with a 133MHz increase on 4 cores and a 206MHz increase on a singe core? Not much. :) I mean, unless I really tried, I couldn't find a difference between my 3.5Ghz E6600 and it at 3.2GHz, which was a 300MHz difference.

But, you get 133MHz/4C and 206MHz/1C plus 2MB of cache: that might have an effect on big applications, like Photoshop or video editing. Games: the GPU is definitely the limiting reactor here, so little to no difference, I would say.

I'd love for a comparison test, though, with someone who got the i7-820QM.

    @everyone who got awesome deals...

You guys sicken me...lol...I don't get EPP and I didn't even know there was such a thing as Bing Cashback. :)

Has anyone been checking the status of their order and is it moving along. I ordered a 1645 on 10/4 and had an estimated ship date of 10/30. I was hoping it would come sooner because my laptop is on its last legs. It seems to have gone from pre-production to the in-production build stage in the past day.

Don't take this the wrong way, but "In Production" is usually the longest of the periods, probably over 85% of the entire time will be spent in this stage.

Usually, though, Dell's EDDs are usually very conservative; my last SXPS was ordered on 9/1 and shipped 9/9; I think the estimated date was like the 18th or something?

Speaking of EPP, how does Dell know what company you work for? I'm active duty US Air Force and I can go on the Federal Gov't EPP site, but my only concern is that ANYONE can. Is it just honor system? My six year old Inspiron 600m w/ Pentium M processor has about had it, and this Studio XPS 16 is looking like a good candidate for my next laptop.

There was another thread here where they were discussing that and supposedly it is a typo and it is actually a 10/100/1000 NIC. That didn't make sense to me either.

Yeah, if you want to add that NIC bit, too, to the first post: all Studio XPS 16 systems come with Gigabit NICs, whatever Dell's site says.

Thanks for the RGBLED, info. :)

The Studio XPS 16's with the i7 Core Processor are really backed up. I'm configuring systems and seeing EDD's with 11-20???? Systems configured with Core 2 Duo's have EDD's of Oct 28 which seems reasonable.

I'm at work and dont have the code on me, wont be home till way later. I DO know the code should be OK until at least tomorrow, but if you're serious about buying I would just call in and say "I KNOW there is a evalue code for this deal, i just cant find what i did with it" copy, paste, and email them the config i posted.

If i can find the code when i get home I will post it, it was originally given to me by a dell rep though. if you do find it before i do, post it up here and it's exp date. I got a buddy who I'm gonna try and hunt it down for too and that'd save me the trouble.

The config in my previous post was for evalue code 6F984-DYPCFX7. With RGBLED, 128GB SSD, Bluetooth & 2 yr warranty it's $1444 before taxes. Without SSD & BT, it's $1299. I think 10% BCB will work with this evalue code further sweetening the deal.

Edit: Just checked and noticed they made WLED as the selected one and RGBLED is another $250 extra. RGBLED was the selected and only option when I posted my last comment

it shows up the regular price on dell.com....

    ------

I feel so bad, I just talk with one rep, she won't able to offer me the original config.

Why I missed the deal everytime.............would someone pm me , if you have any future great deal for XPS 16? thanks

Howdy everyone! Great site here (found it via some searches on graphics card reviews). I look forward to discussion with everyone throughout the future.

Anyway, I just ordered a new XPS lappie from Dell. I couldn't get the lady in TX to give me a better deal than the online price (her loss), so I went back on Dell's website and got a gent from India on chat. He had me email him the config I wanted, he then called and gave me approx. $345 more off ($2069 versus $2414), plus I got a few small "extras" I wasn't expecting (leather accent on case, 3 years of McAfee versus 1, etc). I had to deny his first offer (about $200 off) before he offered me the best deal. ;)

I also opted for the LoJack Premium for 3 years, since it wasn't in the promotional configuration he was able to offer, which added $84.99. FWIW, the $2414 online config did offer 1 year of LoJack for free, which normally runs $32.99 to 45.99 (depending if Standard or Premium edition), so if you take that off the price I still saved $299 to $312).

Here's my config (thanks for commenting, in advance):

I ordered mine with Zlog's deal, had to order on the phone since the e-value code has already "expired". The sales rep asked his manager to get the discount or whatever.

Core i7, RGBLED, Black Leather Finish, Blu-Ray Reader, BT and Creative Sound Software

    Total: $1495 --- Before taxes (8.65%), 7% EPP
No Bing or Discover Cashback since it was ordered on the phone.

Hey everyone, this is the eValue code I used in my purchase, but i noticed when i went online to check to make sure it still work, they have removed the RGBLED screen from this configuration. It is now a $250 addon. Bummer. This makes it way less of a good deal, but still not a terrible one.

The code: DYPCFX7 (Type this in the search on dell's website!) or try this link, not sure if it will work.
    http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&kc=&oc=dypcfx7

One thing I would suggest is calling dell in and saying "Hey bro this used to have RGBLED, what gives?" Tell them you have the add in your hands, no exp date, etc. get them to honor what they gave me and other people.

I see the 3 yr LoJack & i7 820 in your config, but for 2 grand I'd also expect RGBLED and SSD. I was about to pull the trigger last night but it was late, and today they switched it. They just got greedy I guess, anyway their loss ...

Rex i would call and tell them that you had it in your cart with an RGB and that they should honor it. I bet they'll take it for you. I had it in my cart online and its gone now, its supposed to stay for 24 hours just like a quote.

Just a little help for those who missed out (from a lurker):

If you go into Dell EPP (for the US), under the "Laptops and Minis" tab if you click e-catalog, you can get a similar config (except no complete care) for 1299 (after $524 instant discount) - 7% discount (for my EPP). Has the Core i7 and RGBLED.

I ordered one. Looking forward to it.

Oh OK, thanks. I didn't know that. Now the configuration doesn't look that bad :)

I had saved my cart last night and when I pulled it out today, it was $1800+ Since Yun tried and failed to secure that deal, I wonder if it's worth wasting an hour on call with a Dell rep.

I thought they'd be more aggressive with their sale now that they dropped to #3 spot in terms of mainstream computer sale worldwide.

Yeup, it IS the RGBLED. I guess there's still those that haven't seen the FAQ about this within this thread? ;)

FWIW, this is what I started out with below before I upgraded the processor and added a few extras. This came out to $1,719.00, and, yes, this was with the "bargain" deal the Dell employee offered me just to get/keep my business (all you have to do is work the system, and they almost always give in). Using the "deal" link that Cin' and CheapStingys provide, that would have been $2201. That's a $482 difference. Even subtracting the $100 gift card promo, one would still save $382. Actually, even going directly to Dell's XPS 16 page will net most a better deal than their link (here, try it, you'll see). I feel the below config is the BEST deal possible, even better than any EPP program deal (which is only 7% off).

On a side note, if anyone is interested in the below config, I can give you the employees email addy, as well as his direct extension. I'm sure he'd be happy to work with you the same way as me.

    I went with the:

Full HD Widescreen 16.0 inch RGBLED LCD (1920x1080) W/2.0 MP

Because it was the only one listed as RGBLED

is the Full HD Widescreen 15.6 inch WLED LCD (1920x1080) W/2.0 MP

also an rgbled from what I understand on here?

    Why the .4" increase?

Actually, I just tried what you did, and THAT is EXACTLY the deal that the Dell employee did for me earlier (see my posts #175 and #187 in this thread), as EVERYTHING specs out and prices out the same to the "T". That explains it!

The only thing I didn't get was the EPP discount of 7%! DANGIT! LOL! Time to cancel my order and go this route now. PLUS I can get the additional 3% discount using my Dell Preferred Account. Now I'll save an additional $202.56!!! WOOHOO!!!

what do you mean what is the part number?

I'm just looking on the dell canada site. at the selection choices which are:

    HD+ Widescreen 15.6 inch WLED LCD (1680x945) W/2.0 MP
    [subtract $400]
Full HD Widescreen 15.6 inch WLED LCD (1920x1080) W/2.0 MP
    [subtract $100]
Full HD Widescreen 16.0 inch RGBLED LCD (1920x1080) W/2.0 MP
    [Included in Price]

I went for the last one on my order last week before discovering this forum thinking it was the only rgbled

now I'm curious as to why there is a 0.4" increase while keeping the resolution the same. what will this mean in terms of quality of the screen?

    Thanks, Cin.

Hmm....I'm not sure what's up with the two different WLED screens. There are (or at least there used to be) a 15.6" and a 16", so it may be just what it looks like.

If you look at the Studio XPS 16 page, under tech specs you see that it has Integrated network connector 10/100/1000 LAN (RJ45). However, when you configure an XPS 1645 it shows Integrated 10/100 Network Card. So, is Dell being super cheap and putting a lame network card on their brand new high end laptop or is it a typo?

Inquiring minds want to know. I'd hate to see such a nice looking laptop with this sort of blemish.

Oh....I think THAT .4" difference is the screen; like it's a completely different screen used for the RGBLED. Quality is hugely different: far more vibrant colors are the big plus. :)

So you are saying that you think its worth it to get that .4" more?

In canada at least I cannot get that screen with the leather on the case. When I ordered it I said screw the leather because I want the rgbled but since I just found out they are all apparently rgbled...
