If we were going to take a complete stab in the dark about what graphics card we "think" Dell would put into a potential refresh of the SXPS16, what card are we all thinking of?
Maybe a 5730? Or something more powerful?
Note: This is what card we think Dell are going to put in it, not what card we'd like Dell to put in
-
-
If they want to boost the battery life then they'll probably go for the HD5730 or the HD5830. These cards use about 10W less compared to the HD5770 (and HD4670). However, the HD5830 would be a bad choice since it's being bottlenecked by the GDDR3, and thus a little slower compared to the HD5730. (at least this is wat the benchmark score says) And again, I thought the HD5730 was confirmed NOT to be in the SXPS16?
The HD5850 seems like unreal to me, since this seems like a perfect card for the Alienware M15x or something. Big card, High power consumption -> generates a lot of heat & bad for battery life etc...
So I place my bets on the HD5770. This card is a higher clocked HD5650 with GDDR5. This card has not been used in notebooks so far, but it does exist: http://www.amd.com/us/pro.../Pages/hd-5770-specs.aspx This card has a comparable power consumption as the ones being used right now (the HD4670's) Even a little less. And it's performance should be somewhere between the 5850 & 5730.
An HD5770 with switchable graphics should be the way to go for Dell. Good perfomance and good battery life.
Chop chop Dell... -
With switchable graphics the average users could benefit from the extended battery life and the gamers would benefit from the new graphics card!
Then the SXPS 16 could finally realise its potential. -
It's unlikely you'll ever see a 5750 or 5770 in a notebook. These 2 GPUs were announced but never produced, it seems they just don't interest manufacturers. Too weak compared to 5850 with GDDR5 which has twice the amount of SP, and too similar to the less costly 5650/5730. It would certainly perform decently but my guess is they just thought it wouldn't meet its own public (gamers would go with 5850++).
-
Perhaps AMD makes an exception for Dell?
But if that's true, then very unlikely indeed...
So, there's only 3 cards left (from ATI that is)...
- HD5730
- HD5830
- HD5850
The question remains.. Would Dell pick a heavy performance card which generates a lot of heat and drains the battery life (HD5850)...or would they pick a green, cooler running graphics card with an "okay" performance? (HD5730 or HD5830)
My guess is they'll go for the HD5730.
They would cut themselves if they use the HD5850. The same old heat/throttling issues (at least with the current design..) and the card draining the battery life. Besides, the Studio XPS is a multimedia laptop, not a gaming machine. (HD5850 is rated as a gaming card)
But nothing is impossible right? I just wonder what they will come up with for the Alienware M15x then..
I guess there's nothing else to do but waiting -
Something might be going on. The i5's and new i7 are no longer an option for the XPS 16 as of today?...
-
-
Right before a line refresh the options get really slim as they try and get rid of all the remaining units, he was just implying that this COULD be happening here
-
btw tenknics, how did you lock your multiplier at 24?
-
Right, it was only an observation that I can't find the 1647 to purchase on the site at all anymore. If there was a shortage they would just display it as such and other laptops featuring the chips would also indicate the problem (but they don't).
It was meant as a response to the speculation on this thread about a bigger refresh happening for the xps -

i think it will be more likely for dell to make a whole new model with new gpu in it. i think the refresh with the 4670 is the final.. by this coming fall, this model would be 2 years old and will def be updated

i just got mine today for 1266 subtotal. im not sure if i should cancel it and wait for the refresh...
here are the specs
core i7 720qm
black with leather
6gb 1333mhz ram
15.6in 1080p
500gb
2yr warranty
and everything is what ever the i7 package come with like blutooth and 5300 intel.
i mean its a pretty sweet deal, but do you think it worth to cancel it and wait for the refresh?? im like a person who always needs latest tech/model. im afraid though that if a entire new model comes out, it wont look as good as this one (luv the leather) -
And lets face it, my current laptop is seriously on its way out! -

yea we are hoping a full refresh aka model redesign as well as new components. i think it is coming soon as the components are disappearing (if it was a shortage they would merely put delay notes next to the affected parts), and it would explain the lack of sxps 13. i would say a new model for both is on the horizon

well apart from the above mentioned convo with rep, it is merely speculation. but it is weird that they would pull the i5 (which is even newer than the i7). no one really knows though lol
-
The Dell reps must hate me for all the pestering i'm doing -

Although a full number pad would be nice if it came out with this new refresh. -
Okay guys I have more news...
Spoke to a rather helpful Dell rep just now and he said that there will be an announcment this Thursday. He said that it will either be launched on Thursday (13th) or a date will be set for its release.
Some of the things he said -
"A lot of changes" "It is definately worth the wait" "We will either launch it, or get a date on Thursday"
Definately going to be the ATI 5 series but he wouldn't specify which one exactly.
He said that the heating issues should be taken care of too.
He couldn't tell me if the integrated graphics would be used from the Core i processors.
Also he said that the RGB LED should still be available for this refresh (i know that was something i was worried about losing the chance to own after its occasional disapearances from the site)
This is straight from the mouth of a Dell Rep, and this one sounded pretty excited about the update and i have no reason to doubt his reliability.
But this isn't anything official, not until Thursday perhaps. We will see!
Hope this helps, and i hope you're as excited as me about this! -
Thanks for sharing the info, this is hot stuff !
-
Good, I've been holding off on my purchase for a bit now in hopes of something like this.
-
Wow, good job man. If something really is announced on Thursday then I will be proclaiming you to be a God!
Maybe my wait might pay off for once! -

and yeah im a nerdy asian so lol -
Dellienware Workstations & Ultrabooks
hello,
thanks for sharing this info. i guess this somewhat does make sense since dell officially refreshes their promotions every thursdays at 6 am. although im slightly confused on why this rep would tell you all the "not for public yet" infos. but still i will hold the order that i made and cancel it if i get any definite info this thursday.
keep us posted! thanks -

technerdy's Contributions
i wrote reviews on the products that i got. i generally give dell better preference than any other reviews out there. i still need to write on for M17x and vostro 3500 though. if budget is issue for anyone out there, i highly rec the new vostro 3500 with core i5 and nvidia 310m. very bang for the buck -

Dellienware Workstations & Ultrabooks
i actually call them to made my purchase EVERY SINGLE TIME. if i get it online, the best that i can get is what is available + maybe 50 off
but when I call, I can get 20-25% off non discounted price, basically I get much more off. -
-
Dellienware Workstations & Ultrabooks
i call them and tell about my budget and tell them to basically fit the budget for certain spec. just cause i got so many this school year, i kinda know what is the lowest price dell can offer with certain spec, so when i call i pretend THAT is my exact budget.
when they give you"unadvertised" discount, there are a few STEPS. obviously the agent will give you like 50 or 75 off and tell you that this is the lowest they can go. sometimes it is, but most of the time it aint, and i kinda know it as guesstimate. i just tell them literally before we begin -> hey i know how your promotions work. just please give me the absolutelly lowest price you can offer me cause i really do not wanna waste time having you adjust price little by little. just go through this process for twice or even three times and they will get you a sick discount. ijust got core i7 studio xps like that.
also to get the free next day shipping, i told her right at the moment when i was gonna give my credit card info, saying that my school is out and that i need asap (kinda true actually) and the lady threw me i free 70 bucks shippin value lol.
just gotta talk to different agents many times and you will learn it your way. i talked to so many that i usually know the names/even voice for a few. and they get quite happy when i remember it -> hey its you chris again! remember i got that notebook last week??
make friends and you can get a good discount. folks from round rock tends to be very chill. whenever i call them we talk like bros you know. also it is myth that texas center will give you the best deal. people in phillipines gave me some crazy good deals before.
just talk them through. and dont even bother tryin to chat online for discount. they used to work well since winter of 2008 till spring of 2009, but def not anymore.
i sometimes get even up to close 30 percent off (like ma alienware) cause they have all my laptops on file. they are like heyy didnt you just get a computer last week?? and i tell them i need another one but my budget sucks cause i already spent money previously..
and blah much more. i prob spent hours and hours on the phone with them. i think i can even get a job as a sales rep and do pretty darn well -
Some good tips there! Cheers! I'll give them a go when i order mine!
-
I won't believe it until I see it. Also, the price will be crazy high for a while. Sites like Gizmodo and Engadget seem to always get product leak info and I haven't seen anything thus far, have you guys? If they actually announce it this Thursday I will be in shock! Only three days to go...
-
Dellienware Workstations & Ultrabooks
you need 3 things
1. luck with meeting a good rep
2. luck with callin at the right perfect time
3. saying the right things
hope you get a good deal and always remember to buy dell's product only -
And rumours (on these forums) have always had the date of release set around mid-May to the end of May so it does seem to correlate somewhat. And with the status of some components being withdrawn recently according to someone earlier in this thread, it all starts to add up!
I guess we'll find out in 2 days anyway! But it sure is fun to speculate -
-
Dellienware Workstations & Ultrabooks
and also the fact that i recently got this HUGE discount can be the factor of tryin to get rid of the leftovers. i cant be so sure though.
we will see you know. cause i def do believe that its time dell releases a new model because dell gets a new model about EVERY 2 WEEKS for notebooks home office + business. its either end of this month of very early next month for sure something outta come out -
All this talk is making me pretty excited

seems like the rumors may actually be true, this is from the replacement thread and is an email that someone received from dell
-
-
I'd say YES^1000000
-
Will let you guys know if anything comes of this... -
Well this is all very "pant wetting stuff"
Fingers crossed eh -
Well, well.... I can't seem to find the XPS model on dells site... Hmmmmmmmmm???
