I think the whole point of this thread is figuring out how to get an illuminated keyboard, not just a black one.

    Right?

    yeh basically.
if it was just a black one then we would have all just taken one out of a vostro and put it on!
    we want illumination, lol!

They might look same at the first glance, but in reality they are not. Look at the distances between screws, they are clearly different. Therefore I don’t think you can fix a Studio 15 keyboard to a XPS M1530. If you also look carefully you can also see that the curvature of the top edges are different too. These images were taken from DCSE (DELL Certified System Expert) Disassembly guide.

I made the above image by resizing both keyboards to roughly the same width, not very accurate I know, but you can still see that they are not identical.

Not only that but the M1530 will be missing the connector for the cable powering the backlight from the system board...

    bendsley,

I crack the box on a brand new XPS M1530 tomorrow. I'll be decrapifying it and either doing an XP install or a dual boot Vista/XP modification. With acknowledgment to PhoenixFx for his fine work showing it likely won't work, I would love to buy this keyboard and put it on the machine before giving it to my wife if you determine it can be done. :D

Please post back with your results as soon as you get it done. Heck, please let us know when you even receive the keyboard and tell us your initial impression before trying to install it! ;)

    Thanks,

    Phil

This might might be usless info at this stage but just called dell in the states (or india) 1-800-456-3355 and asked about D794C. this is what i was told : exactly nothing!!!! the tosser told me to hold and i did... for 38mins!!! and then cut me off in true dell customer support style. grrrrr... its very dissapointing to see that cust. services have not improved over the years and in fact have gotten worse :( a stiff complaint email will be sent!!!

oh well no further on in the quest.

Who's ready for bad news? Ok, the keyboard does fit into the chassis area, however, the screw holes at the top do not line up at all. Also, the Studio 15 keyboard has a wider primary ribbon cable than the m1530 keyboard.

Left side of Studio 15 keyboard. You can see the holes do not come close to lining up. (note: the Studio 15 keyboard is lower for illustration purposes of the screw holes. I can slide the keyboard up and make it fit into the keyboard area though.)

Right side of Studio 15 keyboard. You can see the holes do not come close to lining up.

Studio 15 keyboard on the left. M1530 keyboard on the right. The Studio 15 ribbon cable is obviously wider.

Another shot of the two ribbon cables. Studio 15 on the left, M1530 on the right.

This is the Studio 15 keyboard over the ribbon cable connector in the M1530 laptop.

I've packed it back up and sending back to Dell for my refund.

This begs the question...would it fit on a Vostro 1500...or an Inspiron?

Looks like the Ribbon is the key, you could always fashion a way to fasten it yourself if the screwholes don't line up.

Nope. The XPS and Insprion/vostro keyboards are interchangeable so the Studio keyboard wouldn't be.

paper wastage > i know there is a black keyboard i could use :) i was just expressing my disappointment that the studio BLKB wont work :( but thank you for suggesting though :)

here is a (prob silly question) is there a 3rd party company that customizes laptop keyboards? maybe there is a LED BLKB that isnt a dell KB we could buy.

but it still doesnt solve the problem of powering the LED backlit.... dell must have had power problems to need a second connector to the keyboard....

i guess a dimmer version could be made by a 3rd party...

    so just to confirm,

    the studio 15 keyboard fits..

    the holes dont line up

the ribbon is different; hence will not work with the XPS 1330/1530?

backlit does not work, and will never be able to be modifed to work?

After reading every post I went ahead and ordered a lighted keyboard for a Studio. My reason for checking out this thread was trying to determine if my
Studio 1536-117W I purchased from wall mart could be upgraded to a back lit one. I was told by no it could not, but from what I read here I think it can.
BY the way they only have refurbished keyboards for now.

Screws are at different places, so you can’t put it in without cutting off some parts, even if you manage to hold it in place without the screws maybe with some double sided tape, what about the connector ? Well I guess you could try to manually connect each and every wire in the ribbon cable, but even then there is absolutely no guarantee that it will work; seriously .. you guys still considering this ? Just put in a black keyboard and get it over with already... ;) 25 pages long and still not giving up...
