The same thing just happened to me. I asked to make sure it's the slim and they said the no longer make the bulky one. However, my part number was confirmed to be CM161 which looks to match what the user in the throttle thread said:

Now, we'll see if that's what actually gets sent to me.

Long time broweser, first time poster.
So I just bought a refurbished 1645 off Ebay and after reading this thread and a lot of the first thread, I must say I am afraid I may have made a bad decision.
I know I want this laptop, but what rights do I lose since it's refurbished. Can I exchange it for another Dell model if it's a nightmare? Will my support be as good with a 1 year warranty? Do you all think I can get the 130w adapter out of them?
I currently have a M1530 and haven't had any problems, so I thought I was pretty safe going refurb this time since I saved about 600 for what I really want.
What are the real problems people are facing these days, since the release. Still a lot of lock ups, Itunes problems etc...? -
Quick question, I was reviewing my 1645 specs on a replacement I'll be recieving and it says
Soundblaster X-Fi Hi Def Audio - Software Enabled
Is that just some software? or is it an actual dedicated soundblaster xfi chip on the board? If it's software how does it work exactly? -

I originally received a bulky 130w adapter in exchange for 90w one. Then, I called up Premium XPS service and requested them to change to slim one since it was very difficult to carry it around. They had then said slim one was out of stock but yesterday I received the slim one bearing part number CM161.
However, when I connected it to laptop, a message popped up saying unrecognised power adapter and to connect dell recognised one with power rating of 90w and above for optimal performance, which appeared only once till now. Is it possible to verify what the system has recognised it as now, tried unsuccessfully through device manager. Is there any driver for adapter too? -
^^ Based on advice from another thread, checked bios and there it mentioned as 130w adapter.
Comparing the 2 130w adapter, the slim one runs very hot, just like the old 90w one but the big one had better heat management. -

These are the list of drivers that are up to date but not in Dell's support page. I installed all of em and I seem to notice that Synaptic took away the multitouch zooming (or whatever you call that). The rest I'm not sure but so far running 12 hours straight and my system hasnt hang yet.
Oh and I'm not using Kaspersky and 2010 office.
Let me know if the problem is solved on your laptop.
Keeping my fingers crossed -

After a fresh install of WINDOWS 7 and using it for a month now, i can say that WINDOWS 7 is probably the most stable OS next to LINUX...... Not even a single crash or HANG till now..... -
Could anyone from INDIA help me.... I need AS5 and i have tried hundreds of shops and they just blink with their jaws wide open when i say ARTIC SILVER...... From where can i purchase??? Online is also not a problem... A little help here guys.....
Much Appreciated..... -
OK latest updates:
I cant get my touchpad to work now. Synaptics touchpad doesnt wanna start. I tried uninstalling and then reinstalling it but to no success. Anyone has this problem? Only way is to use my mouse now -
Just my two rupees..... Can't assure you that it'll work.. But it is supposed to work..... -
If my Studio Xps 16 has
Intel Core i7 720QM 1.6GHz (2.8 GHz Turbo Mode, 6MB Cache)
Does that mean its a 1645? -

Option 2: Install Driver Sweeper or Driver remover and then uninstall the drivers from there as they will delete any trace of what is left behind....
I think option 2 is better.... Try it... After that restart and install the new software... I think that should do the trick..... -
Goodwood,
No, the resolution is fine for me. It was too small when set to the smallest font. -
It worked with even any synaptics driver. Then I installed the synaptics driver again and it worked.
I didnt know that "restart" and "shut down then power on" has any difference. -
for a fresh re-install of windows, the hard disk gets wiped ? I suppose it will take a lot of time too. I'll do it in my holidays lol. Now not that many problems at all ... I just expected it to be a bit faster and the touchpad sucks like .

Whats the diff between 1640, 1645 and 1647?
Do all Studio XPS 16's have the backlit keyboard?
Is bluetooth an option? The config with the RGB screen above did not let me select it.
I am trying to decide quick because I have a stackable coupon that will expire soon
Thanks,

Mechanized Menace Lost in the MYST
Well Mike,
First thing Welcome to the forums NBR is an absolutely amazing site.
Second both configs are nice I would go for the absolute Highest best Warranty possible. As Yes some of these laptops can have problems all though some of the major ones have been mostly solved (i.e. throttling)
Some of the laptops do get quite hot, so it's recommended to get a cooler the most preferred are the Zalman NC-2000 and the NZXT cryo LX if you plan on doing some gaming. I have the Cryo and It is amazing. The RGBLED is singlehanded the most amazing screen I have seen on a laptop All SXPS 16's have backlit keyboard
and the difference is
1640=montevina/santa rosa core 2 duo uses older PM 45 chipset
1645=Clarksdale Core i7
1647=Arrandale Core i5/i7( both clarksdale/arrandale use the PM55 chipset
you can buy the bluetooth card after you get it and its super easy to install
Ultimately the SXPS 16 series is one of the best laptops I have ever owned, But with that said it has it's issues Dell dropped the ball on some things. here is a list of issues I had with my 1640 which should not be so bad for you
Throttling
Screen started flashing then a red tint was visible and was very dim
Screen that was replaced was not replaced right and the corner where the XPS light is was open wide
Motherboard was replaced due to me having issues for blu-ray playback , bad video playback in fullscreen even happening as we speak, choppy gaming performance on low res low settings, throttling
Overheating
Keyboard malfunctions
Speakers crackle and pop
HSF replacements
poor screen and exhaust heat vent design -
thanks for the reply. Like I said I have lurked a while but have not posted until recently.
I configured them both so they both have the same warranty
In reading I hear that some have had issues with the i7 processor and RGB screen because of heat??
Adding the Bluetooth card is nice to know, I did not know this was possible because I figured it was built into the board or are you talking about one for the slot?
Thanks for the confirmation on the backlit keyboard, one thing I have found is depending on the link you click with dell, it gives you different options and pricing

Lucky I guess, original ship date was april 12, then I got an email on april 1 that it had shipped. Thought maybe it was because I live in austin, but it shipped from ELLENWOOD, GA.

yesterday i receive my studio xps 1645 with i7 720 QM.
in gpu-z my core clock speed is at 220 mhz and memory
clock speed is at 300 mhz and temp. is 53 c.
is that normal as i am not doing any graphical intensive task.
i currently have 90 watt adapter.
also in cpu-z my multiplier is at 7.but if i increase the minimum processor state percentge in advanced power options from 5 to 100 my multiplier jumps to 20.what is this all about.
i have contacted technical support and they are sending me the 130 watt adapter but it will be the brick one as slim one's are out of stock in india.
do i need to set the % to 100 even with 130 watt adapter.
also please tell me the some what working fix for rattling. -
Hey guys, got my xps 1645 last week and am loving it so far except for two problems im having. I unistalled a few of the programs the laptop came with but cant seem to figure out which ones i need to fix these problems.
I can not seem to get the touchpad scrolling to work, it was working but i've done something to make it stopThe other gestures work (pinch zoom) and the scrolling is enabled it just doesnt function.
Second problem is ive somehow disabled the display pop-ups that show volume level, brightness ect. when you press the buttons on the keyboard. How can i get these back?
Any help is much appreciated, thanks. -
At last received my lap...Bios is A08 but only 90W adapter..have to get 130W..can any1 tell wht configuration to keep in ati catalyst panel-3D section..
should i keep everything to high or according to application settings.. -
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=471419
For the scrolling issue, you have to install Synaptics driver and then Scrybe along with it for all the MULTI-TOUCH features to come back..... Try it out... -
enjoy...

Hi guys,
New to the forum but been lurking around for awhile.
I am considering on getting a SXPS 1645 but apparently there's a lot of issues with this laptop? So I'm deciding between HP dv6t Quad Edition and this laptop...hoping you guys can give me some advice since your owners
Here are some of the concerns I have so far.
Throttling , Overheating, Poor exhaust heat vent design that blows the hot air onto the screen? Does it cost any damages to the screen?
Some keyboard and track-pad issues also speakers with pop-ing sounds..
But overall, this laptop has what I need on paper but I'm concerned if it is able to deliver the performance requirement without any issues.
Just some questions..
Is it advisable to get RGB screen with i7 since its still an option in the dell website for NZ?
How does the laptop perform with gaming? Does it froze or overheating? Because I do some gaming once in awhile...
Thanks! -
how much FPS are you ppl getting in Just cause 2 and what are those specifications..
-
You know ... to be honest, I don't get what the big issue is with the vent design ... I mean fine, the hot air is blown on the screen ... its not like it blocks the flow of air and even if your screen actually gets damaged or yellow or whatever, dell will replace it (i'm pretty sure they will do it here, in India, with the accidental warranty and all). and lastly, its not like your going to keep touching the screen right ? that would make you crazy ... or a screenophile or something lol. and I correct my previous statements ... it does not get that hot on the lap, atleast with general use, heavy gaming i do not know. the only place where it gets hot is on my sinky bed lol ... the vent gets blocked and temps stabilize at 65-70. the touchpad isnt even warm, but if i touch the back of the laptop (which theres no reason to) then its hot.
-
goodwood,
You're kidding, right?
The difference in temps between unobstructed versus obstructed may be the difference between your machine throttling or not throttling because the GPU reaches 84C; and hence it's thermal limit.
I don't know about you, but some people may find it annoying to have to use an external monitor in order to game because the GPU is throttling; and using the external monitor improves the airflow.
With the lid closed, the temps are lower, because the air flow in unobstructed; with it open, higher temps. This may be the difference between being able to game or not, and getting the performance that this system is capable of.
Yellow Screen, no problem this year. What happens when your warranty expires?
Am I just supposed to eat the cost of a new screen? -
I agree with danp...
I mean this machine gets way too hot and the vent placement is purely amateur work... -
can some one tell me how you convinced dell to let you keep your 90w. i was transfered to like 5 departments today and no one will let me keep my 90w EVEN though the technician on the first day i called said i could .
-
I have spoke to Dell since then and no word has been mentioned.... Try it, whats the worse that can happen.. threaten to charge you and then you send it back!!! -
-
111.48 for an adapter???? HAHAHA thats gotta be bogus... -
I've got a very strange issue. Specs are in my sig. A couple weeks ago my audio stopped working completely. Ran the dell diagnostics from CD, sound worked there, so went back into Windows and reinstalled the driver. Figured something just went funky. Now today, turned on my laptop, and both video and wireless driver are done for. Device manager says it can't verify the digital signature of the drivers. So I'm having to use my old laptop to download drivers and transfer them on the laptop, since the wireless is done for.
Any ideas? Not sure what could be corrupting the drivers, the SSD maybe? I appreciate any ideas anyone has. -
Well does it really get that hot for you guys ? I have the 90W adapter and mine has not throttled yet :/ maybe its because i don't use too heavy tasks on it. and i had a 3 yr warranty with it, forgot that default was 1 yr. Atleast for me, its not that big a deal.
