In reading the post about the speakers failing after you plug in the headset I decided (stupid to do when everything is working fine) to plug in my headset and see if my speakers would fail. After I plugged in and removed my headset several time throughout yesterday and last night my speakers still function perfectly. I have Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi MB set to the default settings (X-Fi CMSS 3D and X-Fi Crystlizer enabled). I also have the 130w adapter. I have the initial install of Windows 7 Premium and updated all my drivers from Dell and also bios A07. My machine is working in every way flawlessly (I love it).

I also run my machine most of the time with the RGB LCD LED monitor turned off because I use the computer as a desktop replacement and use the HDMI port to DVI to run an external Dell 24' monitor. I also use the expresscard port to SATA to hook up to a Vantec Nextstar dual dock which I have two 2 TB hard drives (I do not use the computer's SATA port for this because it will not allow recognition of multiple drives in my dock). Also use a wireless keyboard and mouse. My 1394 works beautifully while capturing video from my DCR-VX2100 miniDV cam and Adobe Premiere Pro and EncoreDVD work flawlessly while editing and authoring DVDs. Photoshop CS4 runs clean, smooth and fast while capturing RAW files from my 25 mega pixel DSC-A900 (also is fast when saving from the RAW converter to jpg). All around it out performs and is a nice machine and a great desktop replacement from my old Dell 650 Work Station which has dual 3.01 Xeon processors...

ATI catalyst 10.3 beta is out on internet. Has any one tried it ?

    here

Downloading it right now. Wonder if there will be any improvement, even few FPS 's would be good.
Edit :Mobility modder's days are over.

I tried 10.3 beta and it seems to worked until I discovered the following accidentally. My AC plug slipped out after working on my laptop for a couple of hours (fan was running) and then my screen turned black and my laptop turned off. This happened to me a couple of times and the only thing I changed was upgrading to 10.3 I then uninstalled, reinstalled the old Dell driver and upgraded to the latest approved Dell Catalyst driver. I haven't had the issue since even though I've tried to replicate it. I'm curious to see if anyone else has had this issue.

Installed it. Don't see much of a diffrence, just a new hydravision tab. Haven't seen any error so far. Installation was easy as compared to mobility modder though.
Well, i read some where that 4670 does openCL and openGL but why doesn't GPUz show that, any idea ?

Thanks for the reply, and yes that does seem like alot can go wrong. Well I keep investigating and if nothing else seems like a good solution I will go the route of clearing CCC files and reinstall it. But is there a folder for just that program I can clean and reinstall? Or are there CCC files sprinkled around? Oh and is that driver no recommended to use than?

Tried re-installing the Dell (Mobility Driver) application over the top of the corrupt installation then tried un-installing and deleting the program installation folders. Neither worked and could not find many references on the forum boards to help. Hence I went the long route..... uninstalled the driver + CCC application, manually cleaned up the registry and re-installed.

The driver should still work OK, and you can stop the boot up error by using the MSConfig Startup Services tab to deselect the CCC option and stop it from loading every time to boot. Till you find a solution you will not be able to open the CCC options screen.

I think all these thing will not occure once ATi launches 10.3 officially. It would be out some time in march. Beta 10.3 is decent .. havn't had any problem till now.

Will the beta fix it? Or it doesn't address that problem yet, because its a bummer that it messed up with that dumb driver that dell recommended.

Before you ran the 10.3 Preview/Beta Setup/Install app, did you Uninstall your previous version or just Install/upgrade 10.3 right over the top (of course, just running the 10.3 Setup/Install app)?

    did a just Install/upgrade over mobility modded 10.2 !
and yeah 10.3 would solve lot of problem, manufactures have a better R&D depertment for their product and hence better driver algorithm.

The palmrest on my machine is perfectly flush with the speaker grill and the silver edge strip on both on the left and right hand sides. No sign of bowing or lifting of the palmrest. The only thing that stands proud of the palmrest and edge strip are the two rubber screen closure buffers

    Hey guys,

For the past 2 months most of the time I am spending is in this forum, and you know why :) - 1645 :). I have seen quite a lot post regarding problems with the RGB led screen. Flickers, color issues, bleeding backlight, etc, etc. I would suggest a new thread regarding all kinds RGB led issues.

    Thanks

Does anyone have any issues putting a CD/DVD into the slot loading drive? My discs just don't go in, to get them in I have to press the eject button and I can hear stuff move around, and then I can get it to go in, but that's the only way.

I had the same problem but on the left edge of the palm rest. I thought the gap may increase over time and metal edge being a sharp object, may cause cut to the skin, along with looking damaged in the first place. Got it replaced from Dell, only problem being, the Windows 7 and Core i7 stickers could not be re-fixed.

    hi,

I have got two question related to the gpu
1> Does 4670 support openCL, n if yes why doesn't gpuz show this?

2> Windows show a total graphic memory of 2810MB with 1786MB being shared. Could some one tell me how to not share any memory with the gpu?
i don't see any option to alter the shared ram value in the BIOS

    Thanks !

Yes, mine works the same as yours. Although I usually use external power with my SATA 3 Gb/s, 64 MB Cache, 7200 RPM drives for best performance (as recommended by the drive manufacture). Also I usually use an external Vantec Nexstar dual bay dock and when connecting through the esata port the computer will not recognize multiple hard drives. So I use and expresscard w/esata to connect the dual bay dock and the computer will then recognize multiple hard drives but still requires external power supply to the hard drive. As you have idenicated when I connect my smaller esata drive to the computer with usb it powers up fine (I want highest hard drive performance because I am usually moving large amounts of data - so I only use this connection when working remotely with the laptop on battery or if I don't have external power available for the hard drive). Personally I have not looked at this as a problem / failure but just the way it is.

I'm not sure if you're familiar with how eSATAp works: standard eSATA (on most external hdds so far) doesn't have any power pins...so you need to provide a power from USB...having this laptop as well as external HDD with eSATA I bought this cable: http://www.delock.cz/produkte/grupp...Hmini_USBSLASHDC_1m_82467.html?setLanguage=EN which separates eSATAp into stardard eSATA + 5V DC needed to power up HDD + miniUSB for another stuff...

I've had mine for about a week now. I love it. One question, does anyone use Photoshop CS4/Radeon 4670? If yes, does PS support it? According to Adobe, the Radeon HD 4670 is supported. But I cannot seem to get mine to show up. I understand it's not necessary, but I've grown very used to gpu support with redraw. I used the mobility modder with official catalyst package, latest. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it so I am curious as to anyone's experience. I tried switching back to the Dell drivers, no work.

Try using the ATi Catalyst 10.3 Beta Preview drivers from strags.com. No modding needed. This month there should be an official driver directly from ATi. No OEM drivers and wait anymore. Our GPU will get Direct support and updates everymonth from ATi :D

Yes PS CS4 supports it (editing FF RAW images w/PS CS4 is why I purchased this computer). I use PS CS4 where I download FF 25 megapixel RAW files and edit in the RAW converter and then save out to jpg or TIFF where I then do additional editing. I have loaded 100 RAW files at a time (don't remember but maybe over 150 at a time) and batch process to save out in jpg or TIFF. All functions of PS CS4 work flawlessly, quick and smooth (love this computer for working with PS CS4). I use an external Dell 24" LCD Monitor connected via HDMI to DVI. I also use Lightroom 2 and 3, Premiere Pro CS4, On Location, EncoreDVD and After Effects (all work fine).

Regarding your post, need more specifics about what doesn't work for you with PS CS4.

As your looking to spend that kind of cash, on an obviously high performance spec, it would be a shame to slow it down with a 5400rpm HDD. You may want to call the sales desk at DELL and negotiate a free 7200rpm 500GB HDD upgrade. It will make a small but noticeable difference and DELL do have 7200rpm 500GB HDD units that can be fitted in this chassis.

IMO I am also certain you could push the sales person to give you Window 7 profesional upgrade for free rather then the Home premium version.

You should also ask the sales rep to ensure they ship the system with the PA-4E, 130watt versus the 90W slim line adapter otherwise you could see some throttling under high CPU loads. This should happen automatically later this month as the manufacturing sites switch over to the 130W unit as standard.

Hope this helps and let us know how you get on.

    Hillie.

I don't think so, I don't remember changing anything and it works flawlessly...

andrewlarmon: I think you should really consider geting rather 256GB SSD than 820QM (which is useless anyway - you won't notice any difference) and BD-RE...SSD gives you a LOT of performance...unfortunately i didn't have enough money for it... :-(

Thanks! I'll check that out. I may have butchered the drivers with mobility modder. Dunno.

The speed on this notebook rocks! As far as my problems go, I can process my RAW files just fine. PSCS4 is fully functional. I'm just missing the added GPU support for redraw. It's not necessary, but I have gotten used to it from my desktop. I'm hoping a new driver install will remedy this problem.

I have run into another problem though... I also use the "Save for web and devices" hotkeys a lot... and they aren't working for me. I have no idea why. I remember reading somewhere in the dell forum about some keyboards not registering more than 3 simultaneous key presses at once. I could be wrong. But what are your results? I cannot get mine to work no matter what.

Without a doubt, go for the i7 720m and the 256gb SSD. You'll be very happy with the performance from that combination.

Is CS4 giving you any GPU acceleration at all? Are the options all enabled etc. or does it not even give you the ability to change them?

I talked to Dell on Tuesday to get a Fast Access CD sent out to me, they asked when they could call back to follow up. I had told them Saturday after 6pm. They must have decided that 2am was somehow appropriate, as they just called a little while ago. Luckily I was still awake, but really, I would assume most people are asleep at that time...what on earth would make them call then? lol..

PS CS4 works great on my machine ( Alt+CTL+Shift+S works fine to save for web ).

GPU, does this help ( see attachments for GPU - PS CS4 Preferences "Performance" and screen resolution and adapter setting / driver )?

I think you can download the Fast Access from dell downloads section.

Can anyone direct me to the correct version of turbo boost for the 1645? I cant seem to find it nowhere. I see the version for 1647 but it doesn't work for the 1645. My gf laptop came with turbo boost disabled.

    Any help is appreciated.

Indeed, I should be able to, but unfortunately it didn't appear there and tech support had no idea how to fix that.

Yep that is an issue with the laptop. You can change the hotkeys needed to perform this in photoshop though which is what i did. But that leads to a photoshop bug that asks you if you want to clear all save for web settings everytime.
