    Crap,
But what do you mean exactly, you did some tests all over again? Or you noticed it in a casual use?

If you need some help, post details in the throttling thread if ya want. Webb or i can assist as well. It is very odd.

Its seems the dell xps offer is gone. Cost $1324 for the xps 16 instead of $999.

This makes me a sad panda. The $213 discount is still there, but now they are making people buy a more expensive base configuration (9 cell battery, 2 year warranty, intel 6200 wifi card...).

I don't suppose there is much use asking a representative to lower the base configuration back to the $999 level, is there?

What I mean is, mine still doesn't throttle, no matter what I do. Considering the difference between the RGBLED and the WLED is a grand total of 5W and the person whose laptop throttled didn't have the 620 (which I do) I figured it would be a wash in terms of amps consumed and that something else is at work. I thought I might have known what the something else is, but my idea was wrong.

Post up screenshots of everything running with TS etc monitoring in view and what not.. it would give a start to figuring it out.

Actually based on the specs in your sig there are a few differences in config besides the screen and the processor. I have double the memory and a 500GB 7200 RPM drive instead of the SSD (I think thats an SSD in your sig).

Well, if I understand this article correctly... the ssd will actually draw more power than a high performance 7,200RPM 2,5" HDD.

I mean, the battery life is shorter, meaning it draws more power per time-unit and therefor using more power. Correct?

Question is, are we safe to say this will not be the cause we're looking for now..

Interesting read. I wish I had an SSD and a power consumption thingy to do a comparison on the power draws. That reminds me, I need to do a battery consumption test to see what kind of life I get out of this 9 cell at full power and at balanced.

Hmm that sucks. With that price increase, I would've hope they use i5-520m at least and not stick with the 430m. They increased the price by adding the 2 yrs service, where most people don't give a rat a$$ about.

Intel bins their CPUs when they produce them. CPUs that can run at say 2500 MHz at a certain voltage will go in one box and if the CPU requires more voltage to run at that same speed reliably then it is binned or ends up as a lower model. That's why in the Core 2 days enthusiasts always went after low VID chips since they tended to give the best overclocking results.

DeathWalking is one of the lucky guys with an i7-620 which is a top of the line Dual Core. It is likely able to run at full speed without needing a lot of core voltage so power consumption could be less than a lower model.

If you're ever curious go buy a Kill-a-Watt meter and see what power consumption your laptop is at the wall. If you have an efficient CPU and an efficient GPU then maybe you are keeping under the 90 watt limit so are experiencing no throttling.

There also seem to be significant differences in power adapter efficiency which is why some get hot as hell and some don't. A cooler adapter means it is converting more of the power it is drawing from the wall into usable power for your computer and less of it is being turned into heat.

It's going to take a lot more testing by a lot of different users with different combinations before we know if throttling is typical or not in the new XPS 1647 laptops.

Update: Called the customer care/order support twice.

1st Call - the rep told me that the order should not be in a pre-prod state for so long. He tried looking it up for a few minutues and then told me that he would have to send a e-mail to the 'concernd' department to change the status of the order. Told me that this happens sometime with the online orders!.. He told me that the status should change in 24 hrs!..

I was not happy with the answer the 1st rep gave... so i called back again.

2nd Call - the rep put me on hold.... and this time he told me that the order was 'stuck' due to high demand.. and its better to cancel and re-place a new the order so that its processed faster.. and ... I was ... like.... how would that help?.........to which i got a rude reply... saying you can do 'whatever you like with the order', but canceling and replacing the order is best option.... and then i was transferred to the order modification department.

This rep told me that the order was delayed due to the RGB screen... and they wanted my confirmation/approval for this order to be in the system..

If not, they would automatically cancel the order after a few days!... (!!!!)

I asked if i can change the screen ...... but she told me that she would have to cancel the order and replace a new order .. which again goes to begining of the queue.

Finally I was transferred to the 'delay handling department' so that i could confirm that i can wait .. .for the order.. and not automatically cancel it.

I will wait for a few more days...
... will update how this goes..

It sounds to me like if an order is canceled and then a new order is submitted, the person who places the new order likely gets the commission and the original guy does not. I don't think it has anything to do with getting a laptop in your hands faster. When talking to any sales team keep in mind what motivates them. Making more sales. None of them have your best interest at heart so take what they say with a grain of salt.

They did this a lot to those with the 1645. The systems ordered in october etc, where configured with a wifi device i guess they ran out of/or was wrong. Dell didnt do anything though, until the day it was estimated to ship. They would quietly cancel their order, and then re-order with a different part #. Some people had this going on well into december and was in the back of the line, even though they ordered in october/sept. I think its how they do things when there is issues :-/

Very true. For now, i did not cancel/re-order. These customer 'care' guys don't really care about the customers ... they are more worried about their targets/commissions...for sure...

The reason/explaination they give is totally illogical and is beyond me!

I want to buy the xps now... but what are the chances of waiting 1month and getting an 5xxx series ATI :p

I know that if you think like that, you will still be buying a laptop in 10 years... Any thoughts? :p

And yes, like I said before, we need more people to test their laptops, its all a matter of personal configs, those little Watts differences between one and another can change the hole situation.

Hi guys, Its the first time that I post on this forum. These past days, I've been reading the complete 80 pages of this topic. I'm not worried at all about the throttling issue. Dell will find a solution for sure. I5 are brand new processors and companies have to understand how to deal with them.

I have 2 questions for you folks :

    1. Is there a way to change the backlight color? ( I want it to be blue :))

    2. If I use my SXPS 1647 most of the time plugged into the wall, is it a good idea to store the battery? because I don't want it to lose it's life

    thanks

Those are good questions, I can comment on number 2 only from past experience.

Just like any battery, if you over charge it or let it die completely, you will hurt the battery life, the best bet would be to either A) Use the battery at times, to switch it up from AC to Battery -or- B) Store the battery somewhere else when it is not needed.

Say, who was it again, WITH throttling... could you try and close the lid, connecting an external display? I don't know if the info provided will help, but it might shed some more light on the situation, no? :p

Changing the colour is possible but hard, you would have to go to work with a soldering gun I would imagine, thats if its anything like changing the LED's in a card dashboard.

Absolutely possible, just an extremely tedious and non-trivial undertaking. You'd need to desolder all of the LEDs and replace them with similar spec'd blue ones. Also, if any problems occurred with the laptop you'd have to switch them back before you sent it in, as that would void your warranty for sure.

    Can anyone explain this:

    Pos Model Codename
    1* ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5770 Madison-XT 400 650 650 800 128 11 40
    2* ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5750 Madison-XT 400 550 550 1600 128 11 40
    3 ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670 M96-XT 320 675 675 800 128 10.1 55

Which one will be the better card I dont know what all the things mean. If some would break it down for me I would appreciate it.

The 5770 would be the better card. Like the 4670 is just a higher clocked 4650. It stands to reason the 5770 is the same.

No Texanman you are not alone. I have been reading this thread for weeks (all 80 pages) waiting for mine too. (long-time reader, 1st time poster)

    Bought online (Dell) om1/16 with an EDD of 2/3/2010 only to now have it bumped back to 2/10/2010. The pisser about all this is that my status still shows pre-production and half month later! My lappy specs are as follows;

    1 224-7380 Studio XPS 16 Notebook $1648.96
    1 317-2826 Intel CoreTM i7-620M processor (2C/4T, 2.66-3.33 GHz, 4M L3) $0.00
    1 317-2364 4GB, DDR3, 1333MHz 2 Dimm $0.00
    1 320-8332 16.0 inch Wide Screen 16:9 1080p Full HD RGBLED LCD, W/2.0 MP, XPS 1645 $0.00
    1 421-1010 Dell Webcam Central v1.4 $0.00
    1 421-0188 Facial Recognition $0.00
