Yeah it does suck, but someone mentioned earlier that when Dell finally (if they ever) fix this issue they might throw us something...like a new MOBO with an ATI 5 series? lol I'm being way too optimistic but it'd be nice...![]()

Something to ask though itsnt it. When you stop dreaming its time to die
-
No, when you stop dreaming you ARE dead lol, everyone dreams all the time every night.

55nm tech.
In terms of game performance:- GPU Core = The faster it is, the better raw fps you get without enabling anti aliasing / anisotropic filtering.
- Memory Speed = The faster it is, the better your performance with anti aliasing / anisotropic filtering enabled.
- 128bit bus = Think of it like a motorway, the wider it is the more information can be pushed down. Having faster memory will help it get there quicker. It is quantified by GB/sec, the higher the better.
- Direct X = The higher the revision, the more complex graphics are possible. However you need a fast gpu that is capable at your chosen resolution to see the graphical benefit.
- 55/40nm tech. This is the size of the gpu die. Manufacturers will continue to shrink as it helps reduce heat, as well as allow more chips per wafer. The more chips on a wafer, the cheaper it is to produce. At 15nm it will be pointless to shrink any further. At that point there will be a new technology to replace it anyway.
- Shader Cores = The more shader cores, the more complex the graphics can be. Higher equals better.
-
Thanks for you replys guys ad for clearing that up. Risco in the words of Alen Partridge "Liquid football!!" loosly translated awesome! Howver in my interpritation it looks like the 5750 is not better than the 4670 ? Only DX 11 an a shorter GPU core range ? Memory speed also suffers.
And Fen LoL ye I guess soo. -
There's an easier solution. Find some colored wrappers and put them on top of the LEDs. IDK what the LEDs look like size-wise, but you might get a satisfying *crunch* every time you hit a key, lol.
And, depending on the LED arrangement, you can get certain keys certain colors by only putting colored wrappers on some areas.
People do this with cell phone button LEDs all the time.
One thing to worry about: heat melting the wrappers?
~Ibrahim~ -
And eating that many sweets lol !
-
Haha, if you're actually in the UK, fluffy, I hear Quality Streets has a very good wrapper for this.
~Ibrahim~ -
Lmao!! AHA ye but I woould have to get someone to eat the purple ones they are god awful!
I cant actually believe you know what they are. -
OK, should clarify a bit more! When a new gpu is designed it gets more efficient at doing the same thing ( more performance per clock ) so core speed is not always so relevant when comparing a DX11 vs DX10 card. Another thing to take in to consideration is the 5750 uses GDDR5 vs GDDR3 on the 4670, which again helps increase bandwidth and thus performance. Also the shader cores is also substantially increased. Therefore it can handle much more complex graphics without slowing down. Thus in this case the 5750 will be the faster card.
Have a read here:

Thanks mate Ill have a gander now. Makes a little more sence now though.
-
You could also color the tops of all of them with a sharpie.
-
lol....I'm on this Sony Ericsson site called SE-NSE and I've had 4 Sony Ericsson phones thus far, so I thought it was a investment to join the site. Great people.
Anyways, most of the guys there are based in the UK and one guy did a mod with his phone to change the keypad LED color and he mentioned Quality Streets. Of course, thirty people instantly asked where to buy them in the USA, but obviously they aren't sold here.
Sharpie idea is good, too.
But you can't change colors if you get bored. Still, it should stop the crackling, lol.
And the 5-series is faster per-clock per-shader than the 4-series, too, I thought?
~Ibrahim~ -
I made a glaring omission in my original and subsequent post. Please check it again, can't believe I did it!

Any recent owner has any info to share about the throttling issue ?
I am entering my time limit to buy one but I haven't decided yet.. The prob is I need to buy at a retail store and I cant find any other brand laptop with similar specs at similar price...
I really want the 1647, but without throttling
-
People that believe all will be well are Dell's favorite customers. Maybe you need to talk to the thousands of Latitude E6x00 owners that spent a lot of money on a laptop that has been throttling for the last 18 months with no solution and no plans for a solution. Or you could talk to XPS 1645 owners who aren't very happy today with Dell's latest new and improved throttling bios that doesn't solve anything.
-
A quick question guys......the 1647 has a regular HDMI port right?? not a mini-HDMI port right???
I just wanna get myself the HDMI cable before my laptop arrives.... so I can hook it up to my HDTV right a way when it arrives....
-
Yes, regular HDMI port
-
How are we all doing with delivery status? Innovatedmind, did you get your tracking number?
People people... the 5 series ATI will certainly be able to handle more than the 4 series! A) Just look at the specs and the tech reviews B) Why on earth would their next generation card be worse than the old lol...
That being said, I'm thinking the throttling issue is being blown out of proportion. My 2 cents... unless you're a hardcore gamer that's going to play Crysis for 5 hours in a row a day, it won't make an iota of a difference. However, for the hardcore gamers in here if I was you, I would cancel my order and wait for people to drop conclusive evidence with technical stats... not conjecture and then base my purchase decision on that. Advantage of doing this? By the time you place your next order... you'll probably get more than we got for the same money. A new promotion is around the corner and I'm positive we'll see a marginal price drop soon enough!
Cheers -
This is exactly what happened to me, and the person who said this problem was not "wide spread" obviously was mistaken.
My problem was with bluetooth... -
Josh, when you call the automated order status line does it say your order is processing?
-
I had the same problem, and if you read back a few pages to arjunprabhu's post, we both had the same problems. Ordered during the signature event, but orders stayed in preproduction/pending production which they are not supposed to stay in for weeks...
The problem is parts are not in stock, and you really have to keep bugging the dell agents to tell you the truth, apparently they automatically cancel your order after a month unless you call their order delay agents and tell them you want to wait. -
My most recent order that the agent said had all the parts in stock and would go into production within 3 hours yes, it says "Order Processing" on one of the numbers, on the other automated number when you do 3,2,1,1 it says "pre production", on my dell account page, shows "pre production", on the order page itself it says "in production", and the dell chat agents (5 of them), have said it is "pending production".
It seems like it's the same game all over again with my order from the 17th... -
based on all posts here, i can conclude that the delay is due to RGB screen. ... (again, this is based on all posts that i read, shipping status reported..etc and not based on what i heard from the dell customer care/order support).
-
Hey Guys,
It really sucks that your orders are still stuck in pre-production. I could tell you with certainty that if your order is still in pre-production.... get ready to wait a while. When I was going through the same thing with another system they kept telling me the same thing... rather multiple different things being said again and again by different agents. "Check back in 48 hours, I have sent an email and moved it into production" bla bla, call back and verify and nobody has any trace of an email.
I'll say it again, if you're stuck in pre-production.... either cancel your order and place a new order.... or psychologically prepare yourself to wait up to two months to get your computer.
Also, if you're holding out for the RGBLED screen, I could tell you after having had the privilige of comparing the wled and rgbled screen in person.... you're not missing that much. It's DEFINITELY sweet, but not $200 extra and an additional month of waiting time sweet. Don't get me wrong, there IS a difference and it's gorgeous,.... but so is the WLED. You guys would be shocked at how amazing the WLED is even when compared to RGBLED.
Good luck guys!
p.s. Josh, I've been reading about your bluetooth for over 40 pages in this thread and in it's own dedicated thread lol.... cancel your order and start again if you havn't already done so and buy the bluetooth 370 module on ebay for $15
-
Thanks, I have been in touch with Dell via email and waiting for a reply. Emailing for two reasons, 1st, I want a written documented account of my interaction with support about this issue. 2nd, I really don't want to go through India to find out why my XPS16 is delayed in Texas!
I'll keep the board posted of any updates I can about the delay when I hear something back. -
Oh yes, I have canceled my 1/17 order, and ordered about 5 different times again, all in a 24 hour period lol. No bluetooth option, but I kept trying to get my price down to where it was before, this time it's $30 more than where I started.
Just look at this...
-
Thanks for your input and insight. I have three reasons why I'm waiting it out.
1.The price I got
2. Yea the RGB screen (I really want it)
3. I don't see the 620m (Dual Core I7) option on the XPS16 anymore, only on the Alienware systems.
Now, If I saw the ATI 5xxx as an option I may re-think this but for now I can wait while sharing my E1505 with the wife.
Thanks again. -
This is really wired....I just called to check my order status on the phone, and the automatic voice tell me :" your order was shipped on Feb 3rd, and the estimated arrival date is Feb 4th."
Today is 2/2, and I have a 5-7 days shipping.....how on earth is it gonna arrive on the 4th??? Man...Dell is living in the future... -
unless, their order status system is in india (or some place where its 2/3 right now!)....HAHAHA and. you got next day shipping!
-
...and just my 2 cents, if you are a hardcore gamer do yourself a favor and build your own desktop. As most of you already know, the price/performance ratio on desktops is so much better than laptops. I bought the XPS 16 for it's great performance and ability to last me quite a few years before I get a new one. Sure it will play a few games here and there, but if I really want to spend a few hours gaming, I'll sit down in front of my desktop.
-
Hmm, that is very odd. Maybe they're selling time machines now!
If it were me I'd talk call and talk to a person, you may have to call through India to get an answer from Texas however.
I may have my son-in-law call for me tomorrow as he speaks fluent Hindi. (No joke) -
FedEx is usually quick. I ordered Dell monitors that shipped on 1/18 and they were at my door on 1/20.
Still going to keep waiting on my config. If you order a new system today, it says there's only a 1 day delay for choosing the RGBLED screen. Hopefully they got a new shipment of screens and can start building this week. -
Over the past hour I've been compiling a list of software that can be downloaded to properly test the CPU & GPU when my laptop arrives. Does anyone have any other testing software that I should run to get accurate benchmarks? I noticed stormwerks set something up to record the CPU multiplier but I'm not sure how to do that...

Throttlestop (from unclewebb and I hope I won't be needing it)
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=446193 -
I ordered the 540M and RGBLED and mine is IN PRODUCTION, was only in Pre-Production for 2 days, so that means they have all the parts and are currently building it right?
-
@nodnarb83: I believe storwerks used Throttlestop, TS automatically saves a log file with the multiplier behavior, so dont worry in looking for more software, that list should work perfectly.
I hope you receive your laptop tomorrow. Please tell us the tests results asap
edit: remember not to enable throttlestop, as it may harm your laptop with the 90 watt adapter, just use the program as a monitor for the cpu multiplier -
Gotcha'.
Thanks!
-
when you call the order status line - does it say in production ? (or order processing?). Also, when did you place the order?
.... my order is pretty much same like yours, but on my account page, it says 'pre-prod' and on the order details page, it says 'in production'. ... and phone says 'order processing'
so, bottom line -- if your order details page says 'in production'.. it may not really be in production/build state! -
Where does it say In Production? And when did you order your laptop?
-
When I call it says order processing, when I click Dell Purchase ID its says IN production and under order details. I placed my order on 1/26.
-
I second your comment Sir. I have the exact same stats on my pages since my order on 1/16/2010.
Seems to me the only state my order (and others) is in is... Limbo! -
Honestly...dell should have a new status "screwed" for situations like these.. that way everyone and every team knows the correct status.
-
But when you click on My Account, does it still say Pre-Production?
-
Since I ordered through EPP it won't let me add it to my account. I tried through the missing orders tab but it won't add it. God only knows why? When I go to order status details, I get in production, when I click on Dell Purchase ID it says In Production, when the first couple days it said Order Processing. When I call I get order Processing. What do you guys get when you click on Dell Purchase ID?
-
Along with everyone else who has the same thing, 3 different order status', it's the lack of a part, and therefor the order is just sitting there...
If the order does not actually start getting into production after the 15 days, apparently they auto cancel. -
When I click on the Purchase ID, it shows In Production. However, it's said that for the past 2+ weeks. On My Account, it shows up as Pre-Production. I have a feeling you may be in a similar situation.
-
Same problem I have had.. and may have again unfortunately.
If you have not called dell already you should, they auto cancel orders that don't get into production after a certain period. -
Lol, so right. This reminds of the old joke, How do keep an a@#hole in suspense?
Ill tell you tomorrow.
Not really funny with these order backups but fitting.
Geez, I have ordered countless PCs from dell through many years (1990 with DX-25Mhz Dimension ) and this has never happened to me before. -
I called last week and had them upgrade me to overnight shipping. That's enough to placate me unless they decide to send out another delay letter Thursday morning. Then I'm going to try and wring more answers out of them.
-
I'm sure I am ): I plan on calling them tomorrow when I get home from school.
