What I don't understand is why do they list things as options if they know there will be problems... seriously.

And why show American's on their customer service photos, but you always get someone from India with a heavy accent..

    I SECOND THAT!!!

It says if you pick the RGBLED screen it will delay it but when I configure a notebook right now it just adds on 1 day. Hopefully they'll get these orders in production soon. I do plan on calling tomorrow to see what's up. I would say its safe to say that those of us with the RGBLED screen are still in pre-production.

01/28/2010 02:37:10PM	Agent (BE_HY_Muqtadar): "it has turbo mode which is an "entirely new process technology for power." 01/28/2010 02:38:36PM	John: "ok but does the laptop allow you to switch to the integrated gpu to save power?"

01/28/2010 03:08:25PM	john: "On the studio xps 16 what is the chipset being used for the i5?"
01/28/2010 03:08:46PM	Agent (BE_PR1_Rep_Marnel): "sorry to hear that, let me check that here."
01/28/2010 03:10:56PM	Agent (BE_PR1_Rep_Marnel): "ok thanks for waiting, it has the Mobile Intel® PM45 Express Chipset."
01/28/2010 03:11:27PM	john: "are you guys planing to switch over to the hm55 chipset any time soon?"
01/28/2010 03:12:17PM	john: "because it is listed under tech specs on the xps 16 page"
01/28/2010 03:15:46PM	Agent (BE_PR1_Rep_Marnel): "Oh ok, I have doubled check it here, the Mobile Intel® PM45 Express Chipset I see here is for the core 2 duo processor offerings, for the core i7 it uses Intel® PM55 with Intel® Core and if it has the i5 it will have Intel® HM55 with Intel® Core shi"
    &nbsp	pset.

So if what dells says in a official chat log they have to honor...does this mean if my xps arrives with a non hm55 chipset I can call up dell and have a very interesting chat with them?

Nice that you got a guy to basically read the website for you. You can call and complain about the lack of the HM55 mobo but you'll probably get an equally clueless rep who will state the PM55 supports switchable graphics or something stupid like that.

I see Dell has new BIOS out for the 1647, A01 which "Enhance graphic performance and system stability" Wouldn't that be nice if that fixed the throttling?

dont think so. a new bios for 1645 too was released today and people (and even dell) confirm that it does not fix the throttling problem. I guess its just a regular update.

Haha...this is hilarious....I wonder if they ever go through any basic computer knowledge training before they get on the phone.....But I can't blame the sale rep...those poor Indians are probably getting paid like $2 a hour from dell....

From where I have heard, A01 is the factory BIOS, so when you receive your laptop, it is already A01....

haha, dude.... you and everybody in here should learn from this. If you ask a regular web chat guy technical questions... this is what you'll get whether it be USA, Canada, India, China... whatever. The web chat guys could answer BASIC questions, when you start getting this in depth with them, you're going to get exactly what you got.... polite but highly inaccurate attempts. You guys are all better off asking your technical questions here in this forum... OR on the phone with an actual tech support guy. From my experience with the indian tech support guys, they're actually not half bad... and I'm a VERY technical individual.

Anyway, I hear a lot of people complaining about the indian accents. I've never ONCE had a rep whos accent was anything close to not understandable or clear. They teach them out there to speak very clearly. As much as the occasional guy is rude or whatever, for the most part they're polite and do what they can.... we can't expect them all to be as technical as all of us geeks in here are.

Anyway, that being said.... if you learn to manage your expectations..... this world will be far less harsh on you lol :)

    Cheers!!

That because you need to use a Spectroradiometer on these RGBLED back lit displays to calibrate them or a higher end colorimeter that has been profiled to a reference meter specially to these RGBLED back lit display types (like the Klein K-10 which I have :) ).

I also have a X-Rite EyeOne Pro and X-Rite ColorMunki Photo (both Spectros) so I'll see how well they do on Dell's RGBLED.

sigh, my laptop is being delayed yet again. The RGBLED supply which landed on 30/1/2010 was limited in supply. My laptop wasn't one of the lucky ones to get it.

I've requested the Dell rep to change it to a WLED 15.6" Full HD screen instead. Kinda let down by the service and evasive answers given by Dell so far.

According to the thread so far, the i5 with WLED screen doesn't throttle right? Maybe it is a blessing in disguise.

Anyone here have any experience getting a refund from Dell?

I got lucky and purchased off this $999 i5 base and added my options from there, looks like the new '1647 bundles' are a little more expensive now.

Well, in my case they refunded within 2 days after I called. I'm in the Netherlands though, and actually never have that much trouble with them.
Probably something to do with consumer rights being forced here XD

As i have been looking for a few days now about the throttling issue on the XPS 1645 and still haven't found any info about the same issue on the XPS1647, I post a message here to know if someone found any test that I didn't find :)

Well MINE has throttling issues. If you scan back about 20 pages in this thread you'll see my results from this past weekend. Even though Throttlestop says it is throttling I can't tell and the one game test I did didn't show any evidence during play (again other than in the throttlestop logs) that I was having any issues. I'm pulling down a demo of Crysis though which apparently will be a better test but the bloody thing is almost 2GB ... can you say SLOOOOOW?

Just sent the last 20 minutes playing the Crysis demo. I had it auto configure the game and it set everything at Maximum. I was playing at resolution of 1920 x 1080, AA at 2x and while the fan ran full out the whole time and the palm rest is now warm (not hot). I didn't have throttlestop running (not even for monitoring cuz I forgot), running on the 90W adapter that came with this. Brightness at maximum and guess what.

From a playability standpoint ... same result as FEAR. It never stuttered, everything was snappy, no pauses absolutely nothing to indicate that I am throttling whatsoever. The game absolutely screamed along the whole time. No artifacting, cut scenes played flawlessly, sound was awesome. I had absolutely none of the problems reported in relation to this game on the 1645's. :D :D

I'll fire it up again tonight with throttlestop monitoring but given that there was no noticeable issues at all, I'm at a loss. Playing the game seems at odds with the test results I saw earlier.

So .. uh .. ? Oh and my power supply is definitely warm but not hot.

I mentioned it in other posts but just in case anyone is wondering, my BIOS is A01.

What was the multipliers for crysis that? For comparison heres the info on the throttling updates page.

The fps difference was a big one, although really framerates never chopped actually since i was in windowed mode etc, The difference in smoothness however is a huge one and cannot be expressed until ya see what the other (unthrottled) side looks like.

I just called dell to check my order status since it has been telling me "shipped" for the past 3 days, and it suppose to arrive tomorrow....

Apparently, the person on the other end of the phone told me that my order is going through the final stage of the assembling line and within the next 2 to 3 days, I will receive my track#.... why would they indicate it's "shipped" while the order was obviously not shipped......F*** Dell.... got me all excited for days.....

Dell really can't seem to get it together. The moment my laptop status changed to "shipped" I got a tracking number from FedEx. I don't know why they would screw up yours and get mine right. You would think after selling thousands upon thousands of laptops, they would at least have a fairly reliable system.

...I'm just hoping that my laptop really is "In transit" from Memphis, TN and not sitting in Dell's warehouse somewhere.

@stormwerks: Thats great to hear.. It is really good to hear that you had a good gaming experience, the throttling issue is definetely not as bad as the 1645

Update : Called dell again today. Spoke to order modification department. No change in status. RGB screens are delayed from the supplier. No info on when dell would get the RGB screens. Current EDD for me 2/10.

If dell does not get the RGB screens from the supplier in a day or two., i think all our orders would be further delayed.

I've said it several times and this notebook continues to make me very happy. Being able to play Crysis on it isn't really important to me so thats a bonus. Of course I had never played it before today and now I want the full game. :D

I continue to be well pleased with this box. It is truely an awesome computer. Well mine is anyway. I do wish that it had the HM55 chipset and switchable graphics but thats not a negative.

You have to type r_DisplayInfo = 1 in the developer console by hitting the ~ key.

You might also have to enable the developer console if the ~ key doesnt work. create a file in the crysis folder called autoexec.cfg and put this in it "con_restricted=0" and it should work then.

Not the easiest thing to do for that game, but sadly for crysis it what must be done.

Looks like your not going to get it on the 10th....

I just find it rediculous how they still list parts that are not in supply and then lie to customers when they order.

I'd expect another one week delay message tomorrow. Maybe they'll have something by President's Day...

    And you're obviously stupid...

Every i7 processor overclocks/turbo boosts itself when it detects that you need the extra speed.

And if you read back a few pages you can see a nice little chat that shows just how intelligent these reps are.

FINALLY, I have my track# now....it will arrive tomorrow at my door according to the UPS......THX GOD....I will have some result posted for you guys once I get this BB...haha~~~

p.s I called dell couple hours ago asking about my order, and about 30mins ago, I got a email from a rep telling me my order is still in the final stage of the assembling line.....and Now I have the track# telling me the laptop is on it's way, and it was shipping yesterday, 2/2

So the conclusion is: Dell Rep clearly has no clue what's going on with the manufactory, and there is definitely a miss communication between them....But instead of telling the customers about this miss link in communication, they choose to lie to us and tell us whatever that would make us wait a couple more days....their hope is that by then, the manufactory will already ship the order and we will not be complaining anymore.....

Which is amusing, because my i7 doesn't throttle but Stormwerks's i5 does.

which is also amusing because you have the i7-620 with the WLED and stormwerks can't even NOTICE throttling, he has to dig around a program to find it, unlike some other people... who have major throttling issues.

    zyc_hot: did you order a xps1647 with the 620M?
Is there a big power difference between 500go sata & 128go ssd?
