Im not worrid about the i7 atm I think they will bring out a fix, and Im going to wait a month and if they still havent released a fix then I will sent it back :) and by then I will have a ittle extra cash.

I mean throttle stop and the larger adapter supposidly work fine, its more powerful when it works :) and the chip is upgradable.

    my EDD says 2/3.

so, does it mean i get it the delivery on 2/3 ? or it ships out from dell on 2/3 ?

This is for the a 1647 order i placed on 1/16 during the signature event.

    Hey vIGAMEIv,

Well, 6gb ram is split into a 2gb stick and 4gb stick. It's always better when they are the same size. Eventually, you'll be able to do a VERY easy upgrade and buy two 4gb sticks of ram for MUCH cheaper than you'll get them for now.

Hard drives deteriorate with time and are also very easy to replace,.... by the time you're ready to replace the drive you get, you'll be able to get a bigger, faster and better (probably SSD) for much cheaper than you think.

The screen on your laptop however, though doable... is certainly not as cheap and easy to replace. If I was you and I absolutely needed to upgrade one of the three... and I was looking to the future, I would secure my investment and invest the money in the screen. From what I've heard, the RGBLED is breathtaking.

Good luck with your PC, enjoy it !!

EDD is "on or before". It will ship before that date, and that is the date you're supposed to receive the actual computer by. They normally are in production from 10-12 business days, and then after that they are shipped.

If your computer has not been in production yet, you will not get it by the 3rd.

Also, wondering if you ordered the deal that included the i7-620M? (Saturday + Sunday) deal?

If you did, make sure you did not choose the bluetooth option, as I have already had to cancel that order and re order (without the discount) due to the fact that Dell is having problems with their supply of bluetooth chips.

So if your order has not yet gone into production, (says in production when you call the hotline, the status pages are not really accurate), then I would call dell because they told me that after a month, the order would of been canceled.

My EDD was 2/3 also, but that would never have been met.

Uhm.. Excuse me, but I'M just telling the person to watch out.. and make sure that he does not have the same problem.

If you want to about some more go right ahead, you obviously don't care if people purposely have to have the same experience...

    Hi guys,

I ordered mine on jan 20 and purolator called me yesterday to tell me they were delivering today (jan 28). I can't wait. Ill post back here when i do some tests and benchmarks.

    I ordered the SXPS 520m, 4gig ram, wled 1080p, bluetooth, 320gb hdd.
    for 1310 $ CAD.

No delays in the order, dell's site still states that i will be receiving it Feb 15... but they were giving themselves a lil margin if you ask me ...

    Anything i should check/do when i get it ?

My first steps will be to wipe that hdd entirely, then reinstall Windows 7 Ultimate + drivers. Then truecrypt the drive.

The core i5 have special AES support if im not mistaking so crypting should be seamless :)

    Jov

He also then ignored all of us telling him that no one had experienced that problem but him and he was probably lied to. And now he objects to me asking him not to spread misinformation.

I'm going to second DeathWalking and say that you're the first person I've seen that has had this issue. It's good to warn people once, but you've done it on multiple threads and your own thread too, completely unnecessary.

I'm sorry that you had a bad experience, but it's not a widespread issue.

Wow... .. it says "pre-production" on one page, then on another page it says "in production" .. and one more place it says "work in progress".

When i call the automated order status phone line, it says "You order is being processed"

.. and then when i spoke to the Rep, i was told, it is in not yet in production, but they don't foresee any delay in parts and should be shipped on or before 2/3!

I ordered i5 540m with rgb + blue-tooth during the signature event on 1/16.. and i specifically asked if there was any supply issues with the blue-tooth.. and the rep told ...everything looks good and there are no known supply issues!

    Totally confused!

    Hey Arjun,

Oh boy, I've totally been where you are! I placed an order on the 19th for a dell studio 1558.... it stayed in pre production for a couple days (but on another page it said "in production"). Each time I called customer service they would say "your order is in production" then I would TELL them "no, it's in pre-production, double check" and the would always be "yes sir, you're right please hold while we check why it's still in pre production."

Point is, I was jerked around for days being told all kinds of different things (including "don't worry, just wait your order will arrive" and another guy told me the opposite lol). Ultimately, I spoke to a manager and told them in a firm way that I was not going to be lied to anymore. After a few minutes on hold, they confirmed that the issue was in fact that they were missing a piece and could not move into production until they received it.

From what I've read and experienced, if your order is in pre-production... it's because they are missing a piece. Normally your order should move into production within minutes.

I can't be certain and I'm probably wrong, but if I had to guess... in your case Arjun, it's probably the RGBLED which is holding up your order.

If it's any consolation.... I've heard that the RGBLED screen is amazing, so I"m sure it'll be worth the wait :)

By the way, I cancelled the order for the studio 1558.... got in touch with an amazing sales guy and ordered the XPS 1647. Order date: January 26.. EDD February 19. Hopfully it arrives sooner !!

    Good luck

I ordered my 1647 on 1/26 and my EDD was originally 2/15 then I called about the screen and the lady I spoke to had a little accent but was very nice and said because of the confusion I'm giving you next day shipping, so my EDD is now 2/11.

Can I ask what specs you got and how much yours was?

Yea, I've had it for a while now. (I started this thread! :p) I absolutely love it. Better battery life, faster clock speed, and I was forced to spend less money on memory (with my 1645 they had a "deal" going where 6GB was the lowest they were selling) I managed to get it with the 6300 wireless card, so even better there. If you're interested in my exact config, I have a quote for it at a killer price. I can give you the quote number, and maybe you can get the same deal? I dunno.

You're lucky you got the 6300AGN. I wonder why they're only offering the 6200AGN at this point. Hopefully it won't be too much of a performance hit from it.

allright so i received the laptop about 3 hours ago. I've just finished reformatting everything with windows 7 ultimate, reinstalled all the drivers and everything. It's all great except i cannot find the sound control manager download anywhere... well i guess not such a loss :p if you guyes know where i can get it i would appreciate it :)

So i did some tests with prime95 and realtemp. the temps are around 70-75 after 15 mins of prime "in place large fft's" so i took the bottom part out and applied some arctic silver 5 i had lying around. Now after 15 mins temps are around 66 - 70 degrees. The full speed for the fan seems to kick in at around 70 degrees so with the new thermal paste is all seems much cooler. No throttling yet !! keeping my fingers crossed.

oh yea, didn't modify my sig but i have the i5 520m.

    Jov

I'm not following you entirely....Did the carrier information change to "shipped" and the order status still says "In Production"?

Just curious because I ordered an XPS 16 on 1/25. Within about a half-hour it changed to "In Production" and has sat there ever since. The EDD is 2/10 so I think it has got a little while, but if Dell's site is screwy, it could be on it's way.

A couple of months ago I ordered one of Dell's new 24" monitors and it arrived at my doorstep before I even got an email confirming the order. That was a nice surprise but I hadn't had the chance to tell my wife about it. Needless to say, it wasn't a nice surprise for her. :(

I think after a few days the temps will decrease even more. Thermal past always takes a little while to settle because of the temperature fluctuations. I'll think I'll do the same when mine arrives. Is it hard accessing the processor?

It's really easy actually :) ill post a DIY with pics if i ever get the time ... maybe tomorrow or tonight if im finished setting up my development environment and virtual machines ..

    Basically it goes like this.
    1) Remove all screws below laptop
    2) remove cover, unscrew cpu+graphic card + fan,
    3) Slide off the plastic heatsink cover, be carefull not to damage it and always keep the screen totally shut when doing it... well that's what i did.

4)remove everything one piece, gpu,cpu and fan, remove thermal paste with paper towel ... i know i should use alcool (ibprophyl i think... correct me if im wrong)
5)Apply a THIN layer of paste directly on cpu die and graphic die. There are many guides of how to do this. Personally i put a little drop in the middle and spread it around, making sure the layer is thin.
6)rescrew everything, replace plactic cover and bottom cover.
7)run prime95 and real temp to see the drop temps.

I idle around 36 now ;) very sweet.

i think this should be done by everyone... you should see the overload of thermal paste that factories put, it's incredible. It decreases performance of the heatsink because of the thick layer of paste....

    Hope this helps someone...

    Jovani

I don't know how Dell would ever be able to tell that you applied some different thermal paste to the CPU. Don't ask, don't tell is the best philosophy. ;)

Great! Thanks! I'm glad to hear it has SCREWS rather than the push pins that desktop processor fans have. Ugh..... I hate those things. Also, if you have nail polish remover sitting around the house (my wife's, not mine :)) it's a great way to get the existing paste off.

that would be the 1645.. main difference between the 2 is the 1645 are quad cores. And the 1647 is the newer dual cores just released not to long ago.

yup the 1645 also has the throttling issues when gaming/high stress conditions. check out the throttling thread be happy to answer any questions etc.

If you read back through this whole thread (I can't believe I actually did it) the 1645 is the one with the throttling issues (which is the one you bought). As mentioned before the 1645 with the i7 was released earlier, hence the lower number and the 1647 has the i5 which was just released. Did you order the RGLED screen as well? That seems to be a power draw as well.

EDIT: atlstang beat me to it.

Quick question, though. Obviously this is an issue for those who want the best performance out of their purchase, but will the average Joe ever notice a difference? I don't know too many people that even know what Prime95 is...

About applying thermal paste, I recommend you guys watch several videos on youtube about how to do it before doing it yourself. It's really not hard to do... quite simple with the 1645 / 47 actually (with the single panel opening everything!), but a lot could go wrong.

I remember with my old inspiron 6400.... to get to the cpu / fan I would have to dismantle the entire PC. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE doing it, but now it's so much easier with the latest laptops!

Its an absolute headache if you plan on doing any gaming. On the modern games you could see 50% or more increase in fps unthrottled. The average user not doing that will probably be fine tho. throttlestop works(anti throttling program) but isnt perfect, and it shouldnt be necessary to start a program etc everytime you want to game.

the 1647 doesnt seem to throttle. And you have the option to return your 1645 within 21 days i think it is. I think thats what deathwalking did, and got a 1647 instead.

That's actually exactly what I did. I got the i5. I'm wondering if the throttling is actually noticeable in every day usage. Say somebody orders a laptop with the i7 in it, but just configured it that way because they want the best that's available, not because they understand the i7's architecture and performance gains. Will they notice a difference in every day usage, or is just an issue to those in the know?
