I would agree with you, except that AMD still hasn't released anything in the mobile realm that can even compete with the lowest i3. This lack of competition from AMD is what gives Intel the ability to try and pull something like this in the first place.

i know all ive seen are the turions and sh*t . if AMD released some x4 processors on lappies the price of lappies would probably go down compared to the intel i series. that would be one selling point of AMD based laptops.

Hi guys, Dell sent me a replacement for my crappy M1530 and I have 2 questions: If the laptop comes with an Intel Core i3 350M processor it means the laptop is a 1647? And does this processor support Turbo boost?
    Thanks!

Yes, it's a 1647, though they must have just began using i3s, as I haven't heard of anyone with one yet. No, the i3 does not support turbo boost.

Very interesting. Thanks for the info. I never knew about the rumors. At least I am glad that they didn't replace the RGB screen with something like an OLED screen so soon. That would have made me really upset and they wouldn't like me when I am upset. ;)

Why would you not want an OLED display?? They're better in pretty much every way (except for their insanely high price). I don't think they make any laptops with them yet anyway.

Yeah, remember the Studio XPS 16 OLED concept model? The screen apparently cost around $3000 alone!

    One day though. :)

I guess his point is that if Dell (or any manufacturer) put a OLED panel in any laptop, he'd still be stuck with a RGBLED, costing him bragging rights.

I just recieved my replacement system from an old xps m1330 that died on me from a spillage.

    T9300 2.5ghz
    3GB Ram
    8400gs
    250GB Hd
    windows vista

to a refurbished xps studio 1647

    core i5 540m 2.53ghz
    4GB ram
    ATI HD 5730
    500 GB HD
    FHD WLED 1920 x 1080
    windows 7
    bios A04
    90w adapter

I was happy to see all the upgrades that I recieved, but I have a couple of questions regarding my studio xps that I hope you guys can help me with.
What are the normal temps when idle? My cpu is at 51c and my hard drive is at 43c when browsing the web and the fans run on all the time even while idle and I noticed that the palm rests get really really warm causing my plams to sweat, are these conditions normal for xps 16s?

I also noticed that the power adapter gets really hot and makes clicking noices internittently. Should I ask for a 130w adapter?

I don't know if it's a hardware or software problem, but everytime I choose pacific US time it gives me the wrong time. Anyone else have this issue?

and last question, am I okay with bios a04 or shoild I update to the lastest version to resolve throttling issues?

Your temps are normal. With those temps, your palmrests shouldn't be noticeably warm. You shouldn't need the 130W for your setup, but if it starts throttling, go ahead and have Dell send you one. Power supplies, like all electronics, get warm when in use, not a problem. Yes, you should absolutely upgrade to the newest BIOS.

After you change the time zone, the time will change by the amount that your time zone changes (i.e. Eastern is 3 hours off from Pacific, so you time will change by 3 hours when you change your time zone). That is normal. Just fix it to the correct time, make sure that 'automatically adjust for daylight savings' is checked, and Windows is updated.

The GPU is the bottleneck in your setup, so the i7 won't increase speed in games by any significant amount.

Get a Blu-Ray drive on Ebay for $100 and save yourself time and money.

You can get a BD drive for like $50 + shipping on ebay. It's nowhere near $100 nowadays and fairly easy to swap.

Mine reads the same. It's 10.8, which is the latest official one from ATI for their mobility cards. I believe 10.9 was skipped for mobility cards.

Be aware that there are issues upgrading an xps 1647 to a core i7 is situations where the laptop shipped with a core i5(something I am currently dealing with.)

I went through that. The 1647 WILL NOT accept a Quad Core i7. You can ONLY use a Dual Core i7. 640m for example. The BIOS is not written for a Quad Core. The chipset will handle a Quad. I am hoping someone will hack the BIOS to accept the Quad

I've been looking into this, but the upgrade isn't worth experimenting on my BIOS for. Unfortunately, I'm stuck with a Core i7 740QM as Newegg won't refund CPU purchases

anyway i just ran the FFXIV benchmark and i got a low score of 1150 which according to square enix page means that even on lowest settings i will get low frames.but i mean my system is way above the min. specs ( not up to recommended though, which are REALLY high ).
    min. specs= cpu-c2d at 2.0
gfx- nvidia 9600 series or ati 2900 series

seriously ? someguy on utube has same specs and plays just cause 2 on all high xcept AA, but i can only play on medium. is there somethng wrong with my system in particular?
any one tried running the benchmark and what scores do u get?

AA makes a huge difference...I have to turn off AA in StarCraft II and once it's off, I can set the texture to Ultra and still playable.

i play with AA off too,but still get low frames. pissing me off, since i tried overclocking with riva tuner by 100 mhz,but to no effect.i thought it might be CCC option powerplay thats slowing it down,so i uninst. CCC but still no diff. BTW my core GPU clock reads 400 mhz in gpuz,is that normal?

Hey you guys I need your opinions. Dell replaced my 1647 machine with another 1647. However, I got some upgrades, but I also got some downgrades. Do you guys think the upgrades justify the downgrades?

    Upgrades:
    CPU: I went from a i5 M430 to an i5 M520
Video card: I went from an ati hd4670 to the ati hd5730.

    Downgrades:
    Resolution: I went from a full 1080p to a HD+ 1600x900
Cosmetics: the new laptop does not have the leather on the back.

I can tell that the colors look a little more washed out on the 1600x900 screen relative to the 1080p, but I can only tell because I have both laptops to compare side by side.

Anyways, what are your guys' opinions? Should I send it back or keep it?

I tried having them replace the screen, since that was the original problem. However, they said that since I didn't have at home service, they couldn't send a technician to replace the screen, and thus, would have to ship out a replacement. If I get another replacement I'm might lose the upgrades to the m520 and the ati hd5730. I'll play around with it a bit and see what happens.

Mine is still under warranty as well but I was told that, while it wouldn't cover the upgraded CPU, it would still cover the rest of the machine. Although, given how inaccurate the information from XPS tech support regarding the upgrade for my 1647 was in the first place, I'd be surprised if I still even have a warranty.

Does anybody know how to record tv on a 1647? I have a HD tuner for my TV that has a DVI out connection. I can get a DVI to HDMI cable for cheap. Can I just plug that into the laptop and use some software to record? Thx for any help. trying to avoid buying an expensive tuner card...

No, what you're thinking of won't work. The HDMI port on the XPS 16 is input only. Only a few laptops, like some Clevo models, have HDMI in. Besides, even with HDMI in, it still wouldn't work, as it's HDCP protected, so you can't record it anyway (not legally / without encryption breaking program). You'd need to have a tuner card to do what you're thinking of.

Hey guys, Im pretty new to this laptop area...

Well I have some questions for those who posses the expertise of this area!

Im currently running with this samsung SSD which in my eyes is slow. Now, is it that way or am I wrong? If im wrong, what SSD your you recommend for my laptop. Lets say I buy a new one, can this machine support sata 6? Is sata 6 some sort of BIOS or is it just integrated?

Is it true that your SSD lose performance when you "re formate" the who system(when you put in windows disk and make a new clean drive)

Is there some stuffs you can do to keep your SSD as good as possible(yes mine does support TRIM, well so it says.) Does it "TRIM" automatically or do I have to do it?

And last, if you want to keep your lap in top shape how do you do?

First times experience, dont look down on me!
