**The Official Studio XPS 1647 Intel Core i5/i7 "Owners' Lounge"**

I've done it before on my home PC builds. Just dab a bit in the center and spread it around with a MetroCard. I even have the Artic Silver cleaning kit to get rid of old paste. Shouldn't be too much of a hassle if removing the heatsink assembly was as simple as described.

I think I'll still go through with it, even if there's a remote chance of voiding the warranty (if they can notice it)

 

I called Dell and they told me the one I order is a XPS 1647.....and I have a I7 processor....this is wired..I am still confused...so they still havn't fixed the throttling issue??

p.s I am still reading the throttling threat now..it's sooo long...lol~~

 

the intel i7-620 is a dual core processor thats in the 1647's along with the i5's series.. The intel i7-720 and i7-820 are in the 1645's as quadcores. Intel seemed to really like making things confusing in their processor naming specs, as technically both systems have i7's just the 1645 is the quadcore versions.

 

It's also possible they use new motherboard with 720qm, because the chipset are same.

 

Just stay away from this processor i7 720QM 1.6GHz untill we say otherwise

 

zyc_hot mentioned he (or she?) had the i7-720qm. Therefore, the 1645 and throttling. I hope Dell gets a fix out really quick. If it's anything like their mobility video card drivers, it'll be awhile

 

i get about 2h20 with the 6 cell battery, installing software, brightness at max.

 

So yesterday, after getting my order straightened out after all the bs I have gone though, my final order had my original customizations, which included the i7-620M.

Did anyone else notice that as of today, that processor is not an option on the XPS 16?

Yes I did lol, dont know why maybe they are trying to gwet rid of the i7-720QM's.

Cool, see there you ordered the 256GB solid state drive. I really wanted one but couldn't afford that much. Gonna wait til they get cheaper then buy one and install it myself

 

ya...sorry, I wasn't sure because somewhere else I was reading the i5's were having the same issue but its ok... I just can not wait till the 15th till it comes in...then i can get mass effect 2


IT was nice of them adding the one year of lojack and the 15 months of antivirus..... I plan on throwing the antivirus away though because I have faster more effencent endpoint

 

EPP deals is pretty expensive..Wierd..

What exactly is Lojack?

Well when I called EPP they took off $350 off my order because I kept threatening to order another day lol. My subtotal was $1,793 and that still beats the new deal as of now. I guess they're really desperate for business.

 

Lojack is a special app that is enabled in the bios... what it does is if your laptop becomes "missing" you call them up and they enable the wifi in the laptop anytime it is powered on, then they contact the police and tell them look its here! if your on the go its a pretty nice app... your first year is free if you get a xps 16 now then it is like 60$ for every year after that...

Does anyone have a a 1647 wiht a i5 in it and a 9 cell battery. If so whats your battery life like when you turn off your graphics card? Im dying to see the results.

 

Well When mine gets here Ill let you know! I will have to figure out how to enable the igp because knowing dell they would have locked it some how

 

I can't wait to get my laptop finally. Hopefully I won't have any problems at all this time.

I want to see how fast windows 7 ultimate + ssd + i7-620M will be when I format and do a fresh install.

Did you order with the signature deal? I'm not saying everyone is going to have the same problem I had, but I ordered on 1/17, I called Tuesday and found out that my order was still in pre production and would never leave production due to Bluetooth shipment orders. I had to re order.

I would call Dell again and ask for what is going on with your order.

 

Online status says shipped. Called dell's 24/7 order status number, it stated that my order was shipped on Feb 3? With an EDD of the 9th. Oh and sorry Josh it has Bluetooth. I think the rep sold you some wolf tickets.

 

yes... i ordered during the signature event on 1/16.

i am starting to wonder if its some kind of eloborate scam. offer lower prices... and then delay the order....... the customers dont cancel the order till they are totally frustrated... (since they got a discount/low price during the so called "Signature" event - whatever the hell that is!)

Got the same exact email this morning. It was supposed to come next week but the order has been delayed to 2/10. I think I'll give them a call today to see what's going on.

And no, I don't have bluetooth on my system.

 

I saw this model at the local Best Buy and it had the Core i5-520m and the chipset is a PM55. Unfortunately no switchable graphics. Toshiba has a Core i3 with discrete nVidia Gt 310m and the HM55 chipset which gives possible switchable graphics but not enabled that I could see at BB.

 

Hi guyes, a little follow up.
Im getting an issue with the new 1647, it might be a isolated issue but ill still share.

The system freeses at boot like when the little bar is like 3/4. i can't even get to the bios when it happens. It seems it always jams when the battery is full so what i do is i let the battery drain for a minute or 2 and then it boots no problem. I just disabled quick boot and will let you know what happens.

I didnt know that they released the A01 for the 1647!! mmmm I thought the website lists the A00 version.

 

Are you sure its the 520 you saw at bestbuy and not the 430? I thought BB only carries the 430. Anyway, how is the speed of the 520? is it speedy?

I strongly suggest u cancel the 1645 order if u can -- atleast till the throttle issue is fixed.

 

I could not find it on their website but mine came with the A01 version. Should i downgrade to test it ? or reflash the bios ?

 

No its status is shipped as well. Your status will say in production right up until they stick it in a box and get a tracking number from Purolator or whoever the courier is. Then it will change to shipped. Mine is currently on a truck on its way here. Its just like christmas! Well without the tree and all the drunks.

 

How / where did you put the paste? Did you have to take anything other than bottom off?

 

Well you're lucky you got yours shipped before the current production delay was put in place. I have a feeling its supply issues with the RGBLED screen again.

 

I ordered this one Jan 15 and it went to In Production status the same day. Apparently they are backlogged or have a shortage of 16" rgbled screens and an automatic 12 day lead time but I would think that it should have moved from pre-production status by now.

I ordered two days after you and was willing to wait the estimated 2 1/2 weeks but now it has become 3 1/2 weeks with this latest delay email. As of today, it still shows as pre-production. I'm planning on calling CS later and see if they can at least have me tossed to overnight shipping for the extra week of waiting.

 

I would say leave it if its working fine now.

 

We buy a lot of Dell equipment and in talking with the account exec he was saying that the RGBLED screen is the single biggest delay in the SXPS16's.

 

Their order status system says different things. On the site when I check it says 'In Production' then when I call it says "Your order is being processed'. Is there a difference between the two? I would hope they started building mine now.

 

Definitely call them. My original EDD was Feb 3 for this one. I have a 1645 on order too with a EDD of Feb 1 but according to my rep the screen won't be delivered to them until tomorrow so I doubt that one will be here on time. I'm in Canada, not sure if thats relevant or not since both of the SXPS's were built in Asia somewhere.
