I would go by the website ... it is the most accurate. The status when you call isn't necessarily wrong as something in production is certainly being processed but you will get more specific detail on the site. The only thing better than that is calling Dell and asking them where exactly it is in the production process. They can pull up the order and see details like backlogged parts or build timelines etc that won't make it to the website.

I SERIOUSLY considering taking your gys advice my new XPS should be here today with the i7-720QM, But I think this has tarnished the experience, so I was going to ship it back and get a new one; What you guys thing;
i7-620M OR i5-540M ?? -
540m. The ONLY thing the 620m adds is a marginal speed increase, dont let the 'i7' branding fool you. Same cache sizes, same feature set.
Does anyone have experience with the NON RGBLED screen and can offer some advice? How does it rate? Every review seems to praise the RGBLED and as a result I cant find a base review for the other screen. -
Thanks
I just hope I don't have any parts that are on back order.
-
Not same cache size.
-
Thanks! However I saw on Notebook check that the i7-620M scores alot higher than the 540M is this something I should consider ?
-
hey guys, 1647 with the 6 vs 9 cell. Does the 9 cell add a lot of extra bulk? Does it give you a significant time away from the power adapter?
-
Based on the review here, http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Intel-Core-i3-i5-i7-Processors-Arrandale.25085.0.html, the 620M will offer you little in terms of performance and may cost you some battery life. I was going to get the 620M but opted for the 540M. Not worth the extra money, IMO.
-
Your RGBLED might be...supply levels seem to be fluctuating. Earlier in the week, new orders showed a 2 day delay but now it's back up to 6 days.
-
Right so you could spend the extra money on the RGB screen
and see little to no change in performance ?
-
Unless they changed things since the whole 1645 order delay fiasco. On the website. If the main login page says pre-production, and the order page says in progress, and the page into that says work in progress. Its still in pre-production.
It would "sync" and all the pages would match with them all indicating it was being built, when the dang thing finally went into production it would seem. If your in the US, there was another number to call and get the business side order status bot that actually told you what was going on, as it accepted the order #'s. I have since forgotten that though -
That's the same decision I faced when I bought my system and decided the money should be put into the RGBLED screen, where I should be able to notice more of a difference.
-
i flashed my 1647 with A00 Bios and the hanging at bios issue is gone ! Yay
-
You still get good performance out of games using the i5-540M though, dont you ? And I wish I could keep the i7-720 with the confidence it will all be alright, but im just to lazy and may I say slightly nervous.
However Sager told me that theit i7-720 didnt have throtteling issues lol, and im pretty sure they use a 90W adapter. -
YAH...I just called dell to cancel my 1645 order and replace with 1647 with the I7-620....super excited right now...it's good to be on the dark side!!!haha!!!
-
I agree with PTL, not to mention that the i5-540M is not an embedded chip (so changeable in future) and it comes with the HM-55 chipset which does allow switchable graphics so if they turn that on in future BIOS's you would be able to make use of it.
-
Great information!! hower is the ATI 4670 changeable ? its alright the Mo boartd supporting it but will the GPU be removable ?
As fort he i5-540M being upgradable that seals it that was the onlt thing pushing me towards the i7. (Not the 620 I know thats not removable without hassle). -
Thats true, I forget that I have a different page to look at, all my status' are on one page but in that case I would take the worst case scenario as being the current one.
-
How come I cant find the i7 620 build on xps?
-
They have removed it, I think due to supply, everyone getting that instead of the i7-720QM. However I think the i5-540M is the way foraward
-
its available through EPP, if you have that.

What do you guys think to this instead of my currentXPS16 build:
http://www.xoticpc.com/asus-k52jra1-p-2753.html?wconfigure=yes -
I just told my sales rep if he can get me the i540 with RGB screen for $1250.00 out the door tax and everything I would take it .He said he would call me back in 30min
-
That's a crazy low price...it's like $150 off what they're currently offering now.
-
Keep us posted. I wonder if they are going to come back with "if you buy a 3 year warranty, we'll give it to you for that price"
-
If you dont mind the screen resolution downgrade its OK. Personally I would stay with the SXPS16
-
I second that
-
I got a counter offer of $1335.60 With a 9 cell battery and over night shipping.I told him NO that I would talk to Hp and see what they can offer he said to giverhim some time he would call back later this afternoon. This reminds me of when I went to buy my dodge charger lol
-
ahh right ok, but just chan ge my proccessor on the XPS ?
-
He said sir would you think about going with a i5 430 instead?I said sure but that changes my price to $1150.00
-
I called Dell order support and got to a US rep via India. They apologized for the delay and said the order was being held up because of the processor (i5 540M is in high demand?). Guy offered to cancel my order and reorder a system with a different processor but I declined, since I don't want anything lower than a 540M and anything higher isn't really worth it for me. Asked him about overnight shipping and he agreed to switch me over to it for free. Oddly enough, he quoted my shipping date as still being 2/3/10 while the Indian rep said it was 2/10/10.
I'll be happy enough with free overnight for now unless they decide to delay my order again. However, I feel like the "processor delay" excuse might have been a bit of BS, since Dell's order pages make no mention of the processor causing delays, only the screen choice. -
I got my 1647! Just unpacked it and now I can .... wait for it to warm up enough to fire up. I think waiting for it to be warm enough to fire up is worse than actually waiting for it to arrive!
-
Nice man get some beckmarks up here
wana see how that puppy runs
-
Lucky you!. when did you order ?
is the specs in your signature accurate?
I have pretty much the same specs with blue tooth ordered on 1/16...and my order is delayed by a week
original edd 2/3. new edd 2/10 -
I'm so jealous right now.
I tried to cancel my order and reorder with an i5 520M because the XPS 16 dropped $100 in price the day after I ordered mine. The rep told me that I can't cancel my order once it's "In Production" so if I want a different one I have to send it back. With their 15% restocking fee, that doesn't save me any money in the long run.
.......Dell. How I love to hate you. -
Y'know if I had a 1640 I could turn the exhaust vent into this one and warm it up quickly .. lol
-
From what i gathered on Notebookcheck.com, it seems the core i5 520M is pretty close to core i5 540M in performance. Not really detectable i think so I got the 520M and saved $50 for buying accessories LOL. But the first post here says you need to download a driver to get the turbo boost. Is that also true for core i5?
Also, is there any issues with xps 16's wi-fi card though? I just got the Intel® 6200 WLAN Wireless-N (2x2) Mini Card that was the cheapest. Hope it works ok? -
Yup those are the specs and I did get bluetooth, just didn't put it in the sig. I ordered it January 12. It was supposed to get here next week.
Here's the complete list:
Intel Core i5 540M
8GB DDR3 1333MHZ
Ati Mobility Radeon 4670
16.0 1080P Full HD RGBLED LCD
500GB HDD - 7200RPM
8x DVD +/- RW
Intel 6200 Wireless
9 cell battery
Sound Blaster X-Fi
Bluetooth module -
Ah you ordered before the Signature Event. That's probably why you didn't see a delay.
-
Nice specs man. We need a video of your unboxing now. Seriously
-
thats total BS from dell. talk to a supervisor.
-
Spoke to order modification department -- latest reason for delay - i5 540 processors are out of stock.......
With all the advances in technology and being in this field for decades now, i still wonder about dell pathetic supply chain management..... sucks... dont these guys learn any lessons from the past ?........... -
Yup...the processor excuse was the same BS they gave me. Oh well...at least I'm not in dire need of a new system now. Not expecting them to meet their new EDD here.
-
Crap .. I already unboxed it LOL. Downloading the torture tools now. I have to say of all the laptops I have had and I have had a lot, both work and personal the screen on this puppy is UNBELIEVABLE! Anyone having any doubts on whether its worth the extra I am here to tell you ... OH HELL YEAH!
Unfortunately its about time to head home so results and feedback and all that will have to wait for a bit. Naturally we have company coming tonight. ARGH! -
it's more than just a small speed increase, the architecture of the chip itself is more optimized and advanced.
-
I'll do a unboxing video when i get mine on the 8th hopefully if you guys want
-
Sure... You can tease us!!
-
Wrong. 620 is the same chip as the 540. Identical. Same. No physical difference. The 540 and 520 even have 4MB of cache, they just disable 1MB worth to allow for defective SRAM. The 620 is also much higher binned. PLEASE stop spreading misinformation.
-
How do I know whats bloat ware on my laptop, what should I uninstall ?
Dont fancy doing a full re-install -
Hmm interesting...EPP price. At first it looks more expensive than non-EPP price, but they sneak in the 2 years service + McAfee + 1 year lo-jack you can't remove, thus the price. Lol!
Damn still debating...XPS 16 vs HP Envy 15 vs SonyStyle CW
