That is due to the fact that each vista dvd includes every version of Vista. Based on what key you provide, it unlocks features of that version and installs them.

Yes, SP1 for both flavours of Vista are available on the update site. And thanks, Clyjr, for your information. So, you bought a whole new edition of Vista, paying a second time (the first when when you bought the laptop)? This is what I want to avoid. Well, I guess there is no download available so I will wait until my friends buy the o/s. Too bad. I know some of you on this tread must have downloaded it from somewhere. Anyway, thanks!

I only paid for the DVD and shipping, it's only like $15. I didn't buy another license. All you need is a new dvd and you can use your CD Key you already have, you'll just have to make sure to install the same version of Vista.

I installed SP1 and like several others I had to upgrade the driver for the fingerprint reader before it would show up in windows update. After upgrading the driver the SP showed up, installed it, rebooted and everything seems to work great. Also, my gigabit expresscard that I was having problems with is now working. :)

Hey guys, just wanted to say that I made the switch to 64-bit Vista Ultimate on my 1330 without much issue. I still have not installed the fingerprint reader driver because I wasn't sure if full functionality for it has been figured out yet.

Another question. On 32-bit, I could see all of my startup processes using Ccleaner. Now, Ccleaner shows just 2 of my startup processes, but msconfig still shows them all. Any reason for this? I prefer using Ccleaner to manage my startup entries because it allows me to deletes the entries entirely. Any way known to fix this?

Sorry if this has been asked before but I couldn't find it if it was.

I've been trying to re-install Vista 64bit (didn't get AHCI working the first time) and when I load the drivers (both the ones I downloaded from Intel, f6flp64bit.zip, and the ones that someone posted on page 32 of this thread) I get the following error "To continue installation, use the Load Driver option to install 32-bit and signed 64-bit drivers. Installing an unsigned 64-bit device driver is not supported and might result in an unstable Windows installation."

After clicking "ok" (the only option) the hard drive disappears until I reboot.

AHCI is enable in my bios.

    Any ideas??

    Thanks

There is no flash 64bit support, and apparantly Adobe isn't even going to bother with creating a 64bit version.

Thanks everyone for the great thread. I'm about to take the plunge into x64 on a m1330 I just bought. Here's a question: how long did this installation process take you including installing drivers and such? Should I allot a day to such a task?

After reading this awesome thread, I am preparing to switch over to x64.

I will test it out on my laptop for a while then upgrade my desktop to x64 also.

I have read it 100 times, but just to make sure.... I can use my existing 32 bit vista cd key to install the 64 bit version of the same OS correct? Now, the main problem I have is finding the x64 version. CDN's get the shaft, no $15 shipping for a backup copy of a disk for us, unless I am mistaken and can be pointed in the right way.

Also will games work on 64bit OS?

I posted a while back re trying to get 64 bit media and I agree, Canadians get the shaft as Microsoft Canada does not send a copy of 64 bit unless you buy the full, retail copy, not a Dell oem copy (and I asked them). A friend told me about findiso.com (I believe that is the correct url) which has 64 bit copies for peer to peer download. I will look at it myself when I get time, hopefully it can help both of us.

You won't need an entire day. More like 3-4 hours for vista 64bit, doing it carefully with all drivers.

Make sure you go into the mouse settings after installing and check that all the scroll bars are set the way you want them, if you haven't already done so.

hey all. first thanks for this great thread (especially to trebuin). i just got a new m1330 and want to format it and install vista 64 bit ultimate (specs: t9300, 200gb 7200rpm and 4gb ram). without having to read through 47 pages of this forum (i read the first page and a bit), can you tell me whether the information on the first post is all that is required to get vista 64 working on the new laptop? or what else i should know that isn't located in the 1st post.

    thanks a lot!!

I read through the thread over a couple days and saw a few helpful points.

*Install ADHI during the vista installation to avoid having to play with registries
*There is a link to make the fingerprint reader work for more than just the log-in

Quick question: does duel booting work the same with Vista x64 as it does with the 32-bit system, or are there incompatibilities caused by having the 64-bit system on the computer? For example, could I dual boot Windows XP or some other 32-bit operating system and Vista x64?

I don't think it's a problem to dual boot 32 bit pr 64 bit systems. This is ultimately the responsibility of the boot-manager. Certainly if you run MS OSes, there shouldn't be any issues (with recent ones, that is) :)

I'll update the newer driver link on the first page within the next few days. Also, I did the multi-operating system (xp and Vista 64) due to some compatibility issues with a GPS system I was testing out for the AF. It was a nightmare to set up but is possible. I did not take any notes down but from what I remember, you have to install in a certain order and then you have to restore the boot files from a previous version. Basically, there was an issue with the boot loader. I would not recommend running vista 32 and 64 due to the size and the performance, though the install should be really easy there.

I can't see SP1 on Windows Update. I've updated the fingerprint reader driver, and the video card driver, and checked Device Manager to make sure everything has a good driver, which it does, but SP1 still doesn't show up in Windows Update. I'm running Business x64, anyone got any suggestions? And could I just download the standalone installer instead? Thanks.

    Hello,

I have a coupld of questions after reading this thread:-
    1. Is there a driver now for the Integrated Audigy sound chip for Vista 64 bits?
    2. I have a SSD drive, does it make any difference? Can i still use AHCI?
    3. Before I do the install of Vista x64, do I need to complete format my disk? Can I keep the existing media direct partition or will i really need to reinstall it?

    Many Thanks

Would the installation procedure for AHCI provided in the first post will work with XP Pro SP2?

    Thanks.

    Hi guys,

Installed 2 pairs of 2GB Corsair ram in my m1330 (vista 64 installed and running). Installation went smooth, only windows vista recognizes 4094MB ram, 2MB are missing. I installed cpu-z and in reports correctly 4096MB installed ram. Where are my 2MB? I thought vista 64 bit was capable of mapping all the installed memory....

    PS I checked the bios:
    memory installed: 4096MB
    memory available: 4094MB

    ???????

Why does my m1330 needs 2MB for it's own?????

I would recommend installing that driver during the Vista installation regardless. This is the driver that I used. Extract it and load it onto a USB drive. http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...OSs=150&OSFullName=Windows Vista* 64&lang=eng

I loaded the AHCI drivers via a USB flash drive, are you sure the options are correctly set in the BIOS?

Try putting them on a SD card, it might be recognized during the boot.

I have a question. If i order a XPS 1530 right now and select Vista Ultimate as the OS. It will most likely be that 32 bit will be installed. What i'm wondering is if it will be possible to install x64 using the same OS disk that was shipped with the system. Dell doesn't specify whether the OS is 32bit or not but i heard that when installing Ultimate you have the option to choose. Is this so with the dell OS disk.

The o/s disc that Dell provides does not provide an option. It is an OEM disc containing 32-bit only.

However I learnt from another thread that you can purchase the 64-bit version here and use your original Vista activation key for the install. Pretty cool, imo.

Well, I don't think it is a good idea to purchase the above media because it is not SP1. At this point, you should buy only integrated SP1 media. Installing SP1 after the fact can be done but is not as clean.

Also, I know you guys are busy but really if you read the entire thread, you will see many of your questions answered:

    * 64 bit vs. 32 bit and how to acquire. Check.
    * How to run the OEM key with your 64 bit variant. Check.
    * How to use AHCI drivers and where to find them and where to put them. Check.

All these answers are in the thread, guys, please read it in its entirety. Thanks.

Okay so I got Vistal Ultimate 64 bit installed... now guess what... there seems to be no driver for my NIC card. I loaded the 64bit chipset drivers and the wi=fi and bluetooth drivers but I can't connect to the net to get teh other updates. This is a rea PITA. Seems to me that when Microsoft released windoes xp pro 64 bit similar issues arose. Its like they (Microsoft and the software companies) but all their time in effort into 32bit systems knowing that the majority of new systems are 64bit...........time for an upgrade ... screw the entire compatible with 16 bit software and move to 64 bit already.

Thanks Now I have a nice dual boot 64 bit Vista and 64 bit Linux system on my m1330. BSOD was pretty easy to get around. I usually use Linux but needed a Windows OS for my xmas gift the Zune. Now I might try and VMware it or use Wine to run in Linux as well.

I put in a 250g Seagate last week to replace my 32g SSD. The 32g SSD kept me bound to strict storage requirements. I had to keep a 320g portable drive with me. So I will be selling the SSD drive soon.

SO far I have had great success with 64 bit OS for both Linux and Vista. No crashes yet and I did run it through a couple of games to load up the CPU a bit in VIsta and did some media conversions. I have to tell ya in 64 bit arena I would say Linux and Vista are neck and neck with media conversion. I did a stopwatch test and they were within 3 seconds of each other for audio file conversions. I am using the Hardy Heron Ubuntu 8.04 beta. The final should be out Apr 24th. I really do like Vista in 64 bit though. I will hang on to Linux since I can do about everything but gaming and update my zune for free.

For Vista I gave it 180g the rest was for Linux. I did not keep the media direct partition as I did not need it. Linux can play DVD's but it is not part of the basic installation. You can find instructions on how to play DVD's in the forums for Ubuntu.

Does anyone here know if iTunes is compatible with Vista x64? The reason for my asking is because I am considering an iPhone and I recall reading someplace that iTunes does not work with vista x64 for managing the iPhone data.
