Thanks forceofnature.... my real issue now is since I have upgraded hard drive. I have 2 extra 160gb 2.5 inch drives. I hate to waste space. The drive I have installed now is a 320gb......... can anyone tell me how I can put the 160gb hard drive in a firewire external case. the laptop has 1394 port for firewire can someone give me a link to a good enclosure.. Must be firewire. I can't stand using USB 2.0

Did the install with my own Vista 64bit DVD using the sata drivers from the DELL site and everything is working fine, I used some drivers from the package here also (networking & bt). Testing some other Dell drivers too.

iTunes crashes on me whenever I try to sign in to my iTunes store account. I've tried reinstalling and everything, but it still does it. I don't know about iPhone though.

Yes, in my other thread (and elsewhere in this one) I posted the link to the complete UPEK package. The only thing missing, IIRC, is password-less sign-in in FireFox; IE's is good, though.

The package is hosted by K-Byte on its web site because it sells an external USB reader that uses the same chip as the M133O's.

    The link is: http://www.kbytememory.com/pages/fingerprintsecurity.shtml

Scroll down and click on software for Vista. The package contains both x86 and x64 versions.

I updated the first page to add the link to the fingerprint scanner that supports everything, AHCI driver link, and AHCI install instructions update. I also found that somehow, one of the updates now supports full turbocache on the m1330. Can't tell you what caused that. Let me know if you need something else.

Excellent addition with the functional fingerprint program Trebuin. I've been waiting for this, as I used my reader a great deal while I had 32bit Vista. However, I think that we have to wait for Firefox 3(64 bit) until a firefox module will be available for fingerprint registration support. I installed the newly posted 64bit Fingerprint software, but it does not give me the normal popup asking me to download the Firefox fingerprint support module.

Well, I updated this again to note that the Microsoft Vista DVD purchase link is no longer active. This could be because Vista is now at SP1. Also, I removed ultimate from my m1330 and moved it to my server upstairs and installed home premium using the key on the bottom of the m1330. Worked like a charm.

If anyone can find an updated link to purchase an install DVD only, let me know.

***edit: found and updated the Microsoft link***

I am not sure why FireFox is lagging in 64bit support. They seem to have every other port under the sun going. BTW, I have tried Opera 32bit on my machine and it's blazing fast (and also has Flash support). I would love to see that in 64bit, as well. Maybe, we should start a petition?

You could, but mozilla won't think of porting it until the project is finished. They've allowed it to be ported, but there's the next major problem:

The software writers of all the extra stuff won't write their stuff in 64-bit so it's virtually worthless. That's why WMP and Internet Explorer are defaulted in 32-bit.

Hi, I'm getting my XPS m1330 tomorrow and am going to upgrade to x64, but everytime I try to download the driver files from the first page( http://depositfiles.com/files/1653389) I get "Link is not available. Please back to the download page for new link." . I've tried quite a few times to no avail, I was wondering if there was another page where I could obtain them.

    Thanks.

That link has probably been wiped. Everything in it is now linked individually in the page to allow for newer links. I'll delete that link the next edit.

I'm Just about ready to take the plunge to 64bit vista, I'm just wondering where I can get the network drivers, Dell Notebook System Software Utility, and the Synaptics touchpad drivers, as you have said it would be provided by you, which I assume were provided in the now dead link.

    Thanks

    Fixed for you:

    Synaptics link added
Broadcom now installs via Windows Update as of SP1. I still need to find installable drivers for those who connect via LAN
Dell System Software Utility are the Microsoft patches starting with KB927084. (yes, they are Microsoft updates)

    That should cover it.

Sorry to be a hassle xD, I'm just wondering you haven't included info about turbo memory, I was wondering if that would be beneficial to me at all, as i see its listed under SATA drivers, but by using this guide we're now on an AHCI config.

    Thanks.

I'm sorry about that. I've recently reinsalled Vista and found that it's 100% turbomemory capable. I don't know what has changed. The only difference is that your battery life will go up a little and you should have some slight performance increase. It's worth $20 in the end...that's what I paid anyhow.

Hi guys and thanks for all the effort you have put in here. Great job.
I have a fully functional Vista x64 SP1 on my M1330 and the better part of the help camed from you.

Did anybody managed to get the Creative Audigy sound working? Isn't there any driver, moded or not, that can activate this option? It's the last thing keeping me from 100% compatibility with x64 and it's such a pitty.

    Thanks again.

Hey, I have somewhat successfully upgraded to 64 bit just a few errors:
    1. My bluetooth drivers wont install, when I attempt to a window saying turn on the radio button or press Fn+F2 to turn it on, radio button is on, tried pressing Fn+F2 multiple times, still wont budge from that window.

    2. Not sure if this is related, btu any help will be great, when I connect to my university's wireless network and attempt to dial inot the VPN for internet acess my comp crashes and I get a BSOD this has happened several times, when I turned my laptop back on after one of these crashes I got a Windows Driver window saying "Microsoft ISATAP Adapter #3 Failed".

    Thanks.

Great Forums! Great Thread! I've been lurking for weeks getting ready for my M1330 and Vista x64 Business. I have almost everything working. I even bought the $15 software from Upek and can use the finger print scanner for apps, not just logging in.

The only thing I don't have working is Wireless USB. My M1330 could see the Belkin hub to pair with it (I used PIN association). But it doesn't communicate. The blue light comes on the hub, but it never blinks. And the Wireless USB app shows the Belkin but I don't have the arrows that would indicate communication. I used R167729.EXE from Dell.

Unfortunately I didn't test the Wireless USB with x32 bit before I wiped it out. Has anyone had any success with this and VISTA x64?

    Cheers,
    Bill Kemmerer

I have not seen any progress on Soundblaster Audigy MB in 64-bit yet. I have tried everything to no avail. I have found an alternate software (SRS Audio Sandbox) which allows me to crank the volume up quite a bit and widen the speaker sound making it much better.

    Daromarune:
I can't tell what's going on with your system. I have used the VPN here and it works just fine. The bluetooth works just fine as well. All I can recommend is make sure than windows update is complete and if it is, it might be worth a re-install.

    Kemmerer:
I haven't played with wireless USB. I'm not aware that at least my system has it supported in the system unless I buy stuff. I'm sorry I can't be of any help.

Bill, I have the Wireless USB working with Vista x64. I have found that it is much easier the first time to use the USB cable to pair with the Belkin. I've also found that the reception can be a little strange at times. When the hub is connected you should see a green light turn on and blink. The blue one stays solid if my memory serves me correctly. I'm not in front of the hub right now so I'm going off my memory.

Other than that it is working great for me with my trackball and keyboard combination. I would not recommend it for any large data transfers though. The wireless USB is much slower than being directly plugged into the laptop.

Murkyl - Yes! Thank you for the tip. When I initially started to delete the connection to the Wireless USB Hub I had made with the PIN, the computer warned me I would never be able to use the PIN to connect again if I deleted it. Today I deleted it anyway, and connected with the supplied USB cable. It worked like a charm. Thanks! I now have a wireless docking station.

New question - I have dedicated a high speed 4GB SD card for Temp files and Page file via TurboBoost. It seems I would probably do better to turn off TurboBoost (which is a page file cache if I understand correctly) and simply put my page file on the SD card. I thought this would minimize hard disk battery drain & fragmentation, and speed up system performance as well. I was thinking 2 GB page file and 2 GB free for temp files (I have 4 GB main memory and the graphics card). Thoughts?

    Cheers,
    Bill Kemmerer

    Bad Idea and here's why:
Pagefile should be contiguous and the hard drive still performs better than flash under most conditions...well, a 7200rpm anyways. Readyboost was strictly designed to start file access quicker while the hard drive seeks to the file or pagefile. About 60% of a 7200 rpm drive is much faster than flash, but a flash can start reading sooner.

Out of every test I did, the readyboost drive resulted in increased battery life. The results for read always seemed to be the same with our without readyboost mainly because initially, all you gain is .8 ms in sooner, not faster, response time. I couldn't measure this accurately. Any following read was handled by the memory so it was several magnitude faster.

Readyboost also induces disk thrashing on boot, which makes Vista seem much slower. This is mainly caused by installing lots of readyboost. I would recommend getting a $15-20 intel turbo memory to improve boot and battery life. Spend the rest of you $$ on memory upgrades.

Also, there are some flash memory out there now that are really fast. Test them against your hard drive using a benchmark like HDTune or HDTach. That will visually show you what I'm talking about. If you have a 5400 rpm drive and a fast enough flash, it may be worth doing what you're saying, but test it first. Good Luck!

Thanks! I am considering upgrading to Vista x64 (Home Premium), but I can't use the Microsoft link for acquiring the x64 media because my 32-bit Vista is OEM from Dell. What's the latest thought on how to find the Vista x64 media? This is the cheapest I can find online ($100):

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116204

This only has the x64 Vista Ultimate (though I read in this thread that you can use the Ultimate install to get a lesser version; it will disable features based on your product code):

    http://store.digitalriver.com/store/wmp_phy/en_US/DisplayHomePage

This appears to be the recovery disk *only*, and not the full install:

    http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/download-windows-vista-x64-recovery-disc//#more-558

And this says "No Offer Found" when I typed in my OEM 25 digit product code :( :

    http://www.windowsmarketplace.com/content.aspx?ctId=444

The way I look at it, I should be able to obtain - for free or cheap - the x64 media for my Vista edition if my license is good for it. I should not, and will not, spend significant money to buy Vista Home Premium x64, after I just dropped > $1000 on a Dell with Vista Home Premium x86. Am I crazy? But besides the sketchy options of bittorrent, usenet or borrowing a friend's copy, I don't see what other options I have. I mean, did EVERYONE on this thread go out and buy a retail copy of Vista???

Hopefully I'm just missing something, and some kind person will point me to a post/thread with a d/l or buy link...

    Just to be more clear:

I have Dell OEM Vista Home Premium, 32-bit install on my XPS 1530. I clicked on the Vista x64 link from the first post, that trebuin just updated a few hours ago:

    http://www.windowsmarketplace.com/content.aspx?ctId=444

I find the section on the page where I can order the DVD for x64 Vista Home Premium, and it says this:

Nothing about "if you purchased a 32-bit version, go ahead and download the 64-bit version, your product code will work just fine". But still I try it... and get "No offer found".

Hi, you can legally download Vista files and use them provided you have a legal licence, ie. you can download Vista premium 64 and plug in your Vista premium 32 key and it should activate (you can't load Ultimate if you only have a premium key, for instance); even if you have an oem licence, it should still work. Here is the thread that explains it all http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=240320. For people outside of the US it is the only way to get these files as the Microsoft offers that Trebruin kindly linked us to are only valid in the US. Good luck.

Sweet, that's exactly what I was looking for!!! Thanks yasdaz!

Unfortunately, I just learned that my PDA (Palm Tungsten C) will not sync on x64 Vista. I use that pretty heavily (after Firefox), so not being able to sync my contacts, appts, todo's, etc. from my computer to my PDA is probably a show-stopper for me... :(

Hi, unfortunately I think the links as posted are down. Copy the link and change the number 3 to any other number and try that. The download dialog box should come up.

UPDATE: the links now work again (the op changed the #3 in the links, lol!).

At any rate, for people who are interested that is the thread to look at and if the links don't work, post in the thread and the op will try to get them started again.

I entered my key to ask for a vista 64 home premium. However, they had an error: No offer found.

I had a m1330 with 32bit home premium and would like to get a copy of vista sp1 64 bit.

Ok I just ordered an M1330 with 32-bit Home Premium.

I guess my upgrade path is:

    * Upgrade to 64-bit Home Premium (free?) I guess I need to find that link
    * Install an upgrade software package from Home Premium to Ultimate like this:
    http://www.compusa.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3700762&CatId=306
    * Profit

2nd step is easy, is 1st step a hassle? I am trying to read the first post in this thread and it is talking about hard drive drivers, where are the instructions to get from Home Premium 32-bit to Home Premium 64-bit?

Nevermind - I went back a page, apparently even though MSFT says you need to have purchased a 64-bit version to use, it appears that is not true and a 32-bit version license will work just fine!

Does anyone know if there is a 64 bit driver for the external modem available for the 1330? I can see the 32 bit one when I go to Dell's site but it disappears when I ask for 64 bit drivers. All that is left for the modem on the 64 bit side is an utillity application, not the drivers. I tried searching for it on Dell's site but it kept asking me to input my machine so there was no way I could instigate a device based search.

While, true, a Pagefile on a flash card may be faster in general over a HD drive, in reality, it can be much slower. Most people do not know that Readyboost replicates the flashcard pagefile on the harddrive also. This is because if you decide to unplug the flashcard, bad things will happen otherwise, like apps crashing with no error msg or blue screens.

In general, an OEM license does NOT entitle you to two versions of Vista. Only the retail license offers this option. OEM licenses only contain x86 or x64, not both. Some OEMs do provide x64 disks for their x86 licenses. You would have to go through the OEM and not through Microsoft though. It is just a matter of technicality.

Many people have gotten 64 bit media (through a friend, through the download links I posted earlier, through places like bittorrent or through ordering the media from Microsoft (some have been sucessful), etc...) and used their 32 bit oem licence key to activate windows 64 bit. Obviously, you can't use both 32 and 64 bit versions at the same time and you can't upgrade from, say, Premium to Ultimate, without buying the Ultimate licence key.

Is anyone have problems with the Memory Stick reader?

I just can't get it to work, I have uninstalled / installed the Ricoh drivers and everytime put a card in, it just tells me to format the disk?

It works fine under XP x32 and Vista x32...

    Hi,

I followed your post on M1330 to install Vista 64 bit. Everything goes smoothly, as you have written, thanks, but when in the end I install media direct, after reboot, I get NTLDR missing.

    Any suggestions?
