I think I finally convinced myself to go for 64bit Ultimate as soon as SP1 is released as a Windows Update.

beto113, how do you get an SP1 DVD already? Is it available?

actually i got through torrent, i own a vista license though. then just call ms and tell then you had to format that it. OR follow this instructions to activate without call ms which was what i personally did. SO EASY AS WELL!!
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=120228)
to do that if you already won a vista dvd with sp1 you could skip all this reading but its also good to know, however if youre lazy as i do...if you have anything you want to keep BACKUP!!! otherwise follow the "Procedure" instructions, download the program at the very bottom of the page and thats it

i strongly advice anyone whose not a tech savvy that wanna install a 64x vista, to use dvd with SP1 built in. I had such a great experience. i had no problem at all!!! just update the drives using the dell support website as usual, and thats it...really... nothing else!!!

ive followed another tread to improve the performance http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=166532
i was reading this thread and people having problem with it but with this dvd with sp1 was so smooth that i got surprised.

what you could do is, if you dont find any vista dvd with sp1 built in, you could integrated it by yourself BUT actually i dont really know how to do it, i just know its possible though. i have only some clues about it.
to get a sp1 just google it and download it or you could get it through torrent
then using you own dvd or taking one from MyDigitalLife (same thread
to integrate the sp1 you will need to use a NLITE program read it ( http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/01/07/make-64-bit-windows-vista-bootable-dvd-from-microsoft-wim-with-vlite-guide/

however i dont have any walkthrough this integration thing because ive got it built in already.

btw its blazing fast!!! im loving it. i did manage to install everything i wanted
The things that i needed working are
    gaming (warcraft 3 ft)
    iphone, itunes working fine
and Nokia n73 sync software working fine as well
    firefox
    foobar2000
    VLC
    MS Office
    Adobe products
    nod32 = they do a 64 bits version...nod64 then?!

thats my daily basis, so if you were waiting any confirmation for those program to go for 64x... go ahead
another plus is im using dual monitor and nvidia driver is doing fine www.laptopvideo2go.com

i hope i did any help

    cheers Beto

Hey Treb, after installing the second patch you mention from the Notebook System Software Utility, I restarted and my Video drivers were uninstalled...wierd?

    I think so, any ideas?
    KB929550

A message box popped up telling me I needed to install a video driver, I told it not to remind me again...b/c I had already installed it, and now I can't see the Display Adapter in the Device Manager.

As has been discussed before...if you have the product key on the sticker underneath your computer, that is all you need.

Download a 64-bit disc and use your key to install it. Make sure to install the same version you have now (Home Premium 32 -> Home Premium 64) as the key will not work for any other version.

Also make sure to read through this thread for help, specifically the AHCI fix. You will need the driver on a USB floppy or flash disk before you start the install.

Using this method I am running Home Premium x64 on our 1720 with near 100% compatibility so far.

Where do you find Vista 64 for download? I tried the link to the Microsoft site that supposedly enables you to fill out a form and they will send you a 64 bit version but it did not work for me (maybe only works for the US?). Much appreciated, Yasmine

That is weird. I'd say just reinstall the nvidia drivers. You should be able to see the VGA driver at least.

To be honest...I did not download it from Microsoft, but it does not matter. We already paid for the OS when purchasing the computer. I only made the switch from 32-bit to 64-bit, and activated over the phone and they didn't have a problem with it. It all went very smoothly.

It wouldn't activate over the internet so you will have to call.

Yeah Trebuin, I just figured it out, I actually installed the Video drivers from LV2G the traditional way with the setup file, (instead of the Upgrade drivers, "have disk method" like it explains on th e website) and all is working well.

But...still wierd that my drivers were uninstalled...

    X2p....

The drivers required may not necessarily be found in the Vostro section of Dell. You may have to serarch them out at dell.com and x-drivers.com.

For example, lets say you have a 1505 wifi adapter and Dell support doesnt have 64bit drivers for your system. Look for the driver under another system like...say...a M1330 with 64bit Vista. It still works fine.

I personaly like x-drivers for my 64bit audio, bluetooth, ricoh drivers etc...

Also, get the AHCI driver from Intel. Yes, you can put it on the same flash drive expanded and then just direct Vista there when the time is right during installation.

Hi, once I have a 64 bit copy, I know it will not be a problem with activating it. My problem is I don't know where to download a 64 bit copy from? Where did you download your copy from, if not Microsoft? Much thanks, Yasmine

    Hello all,

I have an m1330 with the Intel X3100 graphics adapter and I'm running Vista Ultimate 64. Everything works perfectly except I when I push Fn up/down to dim the screen, it shows the pop up in the lower right corner with the sun and shows it is getting dimmer but it doesn't get any dimmer. Then after a few pushes it gets extremely dim to the point where you can barely see anything. The only way to get it bright again is to close the lid for a few seconds then to reopen it and it will be back to it's full brightness.

I have already done all the windows updates and downloaded the latest Dell Quickset (from 2007) and the past two Intel drivers. I have also tried Vista SP1 RTM and reloaded the box several times with the same outcome.

Has anybody else had this happen?

    Patrick

    Hi,

I installed Vista64 succesfully on my 1330 but now I'm having problems with getting sata to work. When I turn AHCI on in the BIOS Vista won't boot and the device ends in an endless reboot-loop. When I turn ATA back on everything works fine.

I then tried to install the Intel Matrix Storage Manager but when I start the routine I get an error that the minimum system requirements are not fulfilled.

Any ideas how to fix this problem?

    thx,
    minos

Did you try to do a cold reboot after turning AHCI on? i.e. turn AHCI on, allow it to BSOD, then hold down the power button to turn the computer off, wait at least 10 seconds, and turn the computer back on. This worked for me, and I then installed the Intel Matrix Storage Manager after it booted into windows.

Yes I tried this, but didn't work. I even don't get to see the bluescreen, it goes until the vista loading bar and then reboots and this on and on ...

First off I wanted to say thanks to everyone that has posted information on what needs to be done to install 64bit.

I went through the process last night, I think the step by step guide could be improved some, I think a couple links were either broken or required registration.

I removed the recovery partition and the media direct from mine since I have the 64gb ssd. When I had 32 bit installed, I only had 24gb free. Now I have over 35GB free, and I haven't even started removing some of the unneeded vista apps.

forgot to mention the video card driver problem I had. I tried using the 169.09 drivers and it was all screwed up. Very strange, I would get an error about a dll not initializing, and I couldn't get to the control panel at all, nothing showed up in the menu and it wouldn't open the control panel. I was a little freaked out, since I couldn't get to add/remove programs, or anything in the control panel. So, I installed the 169.04 drivers and everything works fine. My recommendation would be to stick with the 169.04 drivers until you get everything up and running great, then attempt to upgrade if you want.

I'm running 171.16 drivers right now, and I have noticed a definite improvement in games, and they are very stable. Just my 2 cents for anyone wondering about video drivers.

Hit F8 while booting to get to the advanced boot menu and select something to the effect of "Disable automatic reboot on system failure." This should allow you to see the BSOD and get the error code and hopefully that will help.

I've heard from the guys testing the nVidia drivers that the 17x.xx drivers are still slower than the latest 169 drivers. I'm waiting for some good feedback before I transition over.

Really? That is interesting, because I started off using 169.04 for x64, and it was ok. Then I went up to 174.31, but that one made my card run really really hot. I then tried 171.16 and it was stable, and better than 169.04, so I've stuck with it :D

Oh, and I tried to overclock the 169.04 drivers, and my computer would always crash to a black screen after about 3-4 minutes of running the hairy cube on AtiTool. I only overclocked them by 100mhz on both the memory and core, which I had done just fine in 32-bit Vista HP a couple months ago, same computer and everything... its weird... The same thing happens in XP Pro when I try to overclock my video drivers also (dual boot XP Pro x86 and Vista Business x64).

I have been reading this thread... read more than 25 pages.... and still lot to go.. really an interesting and informative thread... I have a Dell Inspiron 1420 (T7500 with 3 GB RAM). I am thinking of updating my dell to Vista 64. Can I rely on the drivers listed in the first page of this thread? Or are they specific to XPS 1330? Kindly clarify.

I have one more clarification: Will some of my softwares that I am using now with 32bit vista cease working after I shift to vista 64? (forget the speed improvement)

Hi When I go to Dell website to check for the drivers http://support.dell.com/support/down...&catid=&impid=
it does not give me an option to download drivers for vista 64. When I choose my model inspiron 1420 it only gives vista 32 drivers and not 64. Where can I find the drivers for vista 64 for Inspiron 1420? Kindly help.

I've just heard the 174 has performance issues vs the 169, and I'm referring to the later ones, around .20 and up. We've also been overclocking with the rivatuner drivers as they are much more stable to overclock the nVidia vs the ATI tool that I liked so much.

I'm sorry, I was thinking you were talking about the 1330. Anyhow, there is no x54 driver setup for the 1420 on dell's site; however, there should be x64 drivers out there for about everything now. What you have to do is install vista and go to the device manager. When you reach that look at the hardware id (the last tab) for the products that don't have drivers. Google parts to the vendor id and hardware id and you should be able to find 64-bit drivers out there via other notebooks. It's a bit longer, but it works and it far worth it.

    Hi guys,

I did the install of Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 today and it all went pretty well. My 1330 is running *alot* faster and smoother than it was before.

However, I've installed the card reader drivers from Dell and while the reader is working it now won't read my 4GB MemoryStick cards. It was definetely reading them before on Vista Home 32bit.

Any ideas what could be causing this and any other drivers I could try to resolve the issue?

The card reader is fine with my SD cards, so not quite sure why it won't read my 4GB memory sticks. It picks them up, shows them as memory sticks but when I try to open them it says; "Please insert memory stick in drive g:".

Also, any idea if it's possible to get Bluetooth working in x64?

    Cheers,
    James.

To add to my question about Bluetooth support on x64 Vista, I was able to find a driver from the US support site (it isnt on the UK one for the 1330 for some strange reason) but when I try to install the driver it pops up a message saying; "Activate bluetooth using Fn+F2 or Radio On/Off Switch". However, pressing Fn+F2 has absolutely no effect and I can't continue the install.. Very annoying..

Anyone have any ideas? Bluetooth is enabled in the bios.

I found a solution to this... The reason it wasn't being seen is because prior to the re-install to x64 Vista, I had software disabled the bluetooth stack. To fix this I installed this:

    http://support.dell.com/support/dow...eid=R159805&formatcnt=1&libid=0&fileid=213714

Now, this looks like it's 32bit Vista but it worked. I should really install the x64 version but that won't install now as it's telling me to uninstall the current version first and I'm not sure how to do that.. yet.. ;)

Something to look out for if you reinstall / upgrade and have disabled the bluetooth stack.

Hi, I did not get an answer to my question a bit back. I am interested in trying out the 64 bit vista but I have no 64 bit media. There is a place on the Microsoft site that you can order 64 bit but it did not work for me. It maybe because I am Canadian but maybe because I saw on another site that Microsoft will only provide the 64 bit media for retail versions, not oem like Dell's Vista. Where can I get the media? All of you must have gotten the media somehow and not all of you have Ultimate or ordered from the Microsoft site. Please advise, with much thanks!

Hi, thanks for your reply. So, even though yours was an oem version of Vista, Microsoft sent you the 64 bit version?

Noone else having problems with MemoryStick cards in the card reader on x64 Vista then?

Mine definetely was reading them fine in 32bit home but now, even though they show up in explorer, the O/S just can't read them. Very frustrating.

Has anybody resolved the issue where you can't make your display dimmer and when you unplug it the display goes black unless you are on "High performance"?

I am using the latest drivers and I'm not having any luck. I saw it was mentioned here but I didn't see the resolution. I have the Intel x3100 display adapter.

I got mine from this site http://windowsmarketplace.com/content.aspx?ctId=404&tabid=1. Then when I installed it I used the Activation backup utility. When I ordered the DVD, they don't ask for a key or anything.

Is SP1 available on 64 bit now? Looked through some of the threads on SP1 but didn't see mention of 64 bit. If it is available, has anyone installed it and had any problems?

    Maybe interresting:

I borrowed a friends Vista Ultimate 64-bit retail dvd. I installed it on the m1330 with the home premium 32-bit key (from the bottom of the laptop). Guess what, it accepted the key. After installation vista activated itself via internet without a problem. One note: ultimate version is NOT installed, the installed version is home premium 64-bit, even though I used a ultimate 64-bit retail cd.
