I have 3gb in my m1330 and I'm constantly between 30%-45% ram usage, i dont even have a dreamscene background running, I just have objectdock, sidebar. Is this normal?
-
My 1330 had have had BSOD on random restarts (usually when updating system config/win update etc). Couldn't get any drivers installed using any method described so I went with the reinstall using MARKSCA1 and others methods and am glad to say that 64bit now runs like a dream with no more BSODs. Sound drivers were a bit of a nightmare as vista did the updating of the drivers without me noticing and it took a few reboots and driver removals to clean them out and replace them with the newest on Dells 64bit Driver section before the sound came back on.
All in all it took me an evening to do & am now looking forward to more tips and tricks in the future for this 64bit os - thanks to you & especially Trebuin for this post as without it I would've given up a long time ago! -
I recently installed Vista 64 bit on my m1330. Everything seems to be running smoothly with the exception of the webcam. I originally installed the 64bit webcam drivers from Dell's site, and I also used windows update for the drivers as well. But the webcam doesn't seem to be working.
When I launch the webcam console, the console/settings window appears but it doesn't launch the webcam video. I don't know how to test it out. When I originally had it installed on XP/Vista 32bit, the webcam would automatically run as soon as I launched the webcam console from the start menu. I know that the webcam is working because the blue light of the cam blinks everytime when I boot into windows. But the blue light doesn't blink when I launch the webcam console. When I look in device manager, the drivers appear to be installed correctly.
Any ideas? -
Yup... I did the same. You still have to install the original Webcam software disk even though you are installing all the updates.
EXACT same happened to me. -
Question:
I have a backup from Windows easy file transfer wizard on my external hard-drive (windows Vista 32bt business).
Will i be able to import this setup using windows easy file transfer wizard if i buy windows vista 64bit home professional for my new desktop? -
hi
i have just got an xps m1530... i have installed vista ultimate 64bit
among the problems and hoops you have to jump through to get it to work properly, one thing i cant find any info on is
my microphone doesnt want to work at all... headphones are fine and im plugging into the mic input on the front of the notebook on the right hand side but nothing will come on the computer
anyone help me here? -

"EAX Software" is not real EAX since you do not have the actual DSP from the physical sound card. The X-Fi Notebook card doesn't have this either and resorts to software.
The only way to get true EAX is from a desktop card, or external USB device.
I wouldn't worry too much about the loss of that one.

Thank God for this thread. Mod should sticky this.

Guys, what's the latest on the UPEK Fingerprint app for x64? What version is best? I installed the driver but I can't enroll my prints yet since there seems to be no applet.

So guys, did anyone find the drivers for 64 bit vista for the ALPS touchpad???
Becasue the synaptec works but doesnt have the option to disable that freakin tap to click thingy
Greetings -
Sorry about the lack of updates here, I've been deployed way too often recently, several times to Alaska and now to Thailand. Next stop, Iraq in just 1.5 months. Anyhow, I do have the 64 bit ALPS touchpad drivers and I need to start reoganizing all the links for direct downloads. I'll get this up to date within the next few days.

excellent, now i have 100% vista 64 drivers installed on my 1420.
THanks for everything guys!! -
Its good to see this thread still going strong after so long; its probably the best indication of the upsurge into 64Bit environments that we have on this site.
I think the most amazing thing is the fact that there seems to be nobody who has negative comments or goes back to 32bit once they have gotten the 64Bit system running smoothly.
x64 Lives! -
Does vista 64bit see the full 4gb? how is it for things like video codecs like CCCP?
-
-
Moderators, if there is a problem with direct-linking to the file, I can supply a link to the page I found that download on. -
oh awesome! thanks so much for the prompt reply. i'm downloading it right now. where did you find the software for the finger print reader (particularly for future updates that support firefox since that's what i use with vista 64). i was also wondering, do you know anyway to map the media direct "house" button to launch an application (i.e. firefox.exe)? right now it doesn't do anything. thanks again!
-
And as for above..yes 64 Bit sees the entire 4Gb memory or higher up to 180 plus.
-
Microsoft should have never invented 32bit vista to start with. So the manufacturer just start doing the driver thing for 64 bit. 32 bit OS are a thing of the past.
Maybe coming later with a Vista lite for small computers and do 32 bit there.
I'm actually even more interested in XP-64...
Anybody experience with that?

mschira, i COMPLETELY agree with you. most 'decent' computers were sporting 2gb of ram when vista was coming out, with 4gb being the obvious next transition. and to be quiet honest, vista with 2gb of ram feels like XP on 512-1gb of ram.. just wasn't good. but let me tell you all, when you put in 4gb of ram and run vista 64, it's completely different... feels much snappier than XP (and i was using XP with 4gb of ram, even though only 2944MB showed up on my previous computer). I didn't want to upgrade to Vista, but since I need a 64bit operating system, i decided to make it vista. Don't bother with XP 64 - the driver support on it is scarce (hard enough getting driver support for vista 64 - but at least it has a bright future -- xp 64 is a dead ship waiting to sink).
-
@Flaxx, Hm, maybe Vista 64 is acceptable. I dunno. I have XP64 running on a Workstation and I am quite pleased with it actually. It even offers benefits for some 32 bit aps (matlab that is...).
But you are right, drivers might get a nightmare. The workstation hardware was chosen to work with XP64 - can't exactly do that for a Laptop.
I just hate M$ so much for doing this Vista32 mess. Thinking about it just makes me go vertical.
It was so damm obvious that 32 is out. What the f*** where they thinking! What would have been the prob of letting everybody who does not want (or have the power for) 64 bit just use XP. Done. Saves TONS OF MONEY FOR EVERYBODY. (including M$ to be honest...)
No they needed 25 different versions. Home Basic, Home Advance, Proffesional basic, proffesional advanced, Ultimate, one version for third world coutries, oh yes and multiply this times two for 32 and 64 bit. A marketing morons dream.
M. -
haha, it reminds me of cell phones... all these little isolated packages, charging for sms that uses bytes of data when a voice call using 100-1000 times the bandwidth every second. it's all about marketing and i find it quite obnoxious.
my friend and i were just talking about this whole 64 bit thing though. if microsoft didn't even bother with xp 64 and vista 32, they could have released vista 64 at the time xp 64 was released and it would have help migrate to 64 bit much faster and made everyone a whole lot happier. i thought vista was only gonna be 64; needless to say, i was in dismay when i found out they devoted ANY resources to a 32-bit version of the OS. -
I think they decided they could get millions of people to upgrade from XP on older non-64bit hardware.
-
That plan went well...
Oh boy
I can see that the M$ marketing morons come up with such stupid stuff back in 2000 when they planed all this ****. But why don't the hardware companies like Dell, Lenovo, Nvidia in 2007 when all this is obvious just say NO.
They did confront M$ when it came to not ditshing XP. Why sleeping there?

My mic array doesn't seem to be working under Ultimate x64. I tried it with and without the x64 driver (Vista has a built-in driver for the HD Audio). Anyone have a solution? Thanks.
-
-
Many thanks, flaxx! That worked--The original x64 driver for M1330, as recommended by Dell Support online (R160062) didn't work with the mic array. Messed up.
Much appreciated! -
Hey guys, i have one problem:
I have all drivers and everything running fine on my 1420.
However, whenever i insert a memory stick duo into my machine, the system says i have to format it so i can use it, in other words, as it the memory stick was absolutley empty, which is not the case.
I have lots of mp3s and videos on my sony ericcsson w810 however these aren't recognized at all by the memory card reader. I remember vista 32 bit worked flawlessly regarding this same thing.
Any ideas? I have the latest Ricoh drivers for 64 bit vista :S -
Did you try this without the Ricoh driver? I think Vista has a built-in driver, and it works fine for me so I never really updated the driver.
-
File format? Maybe the memory stick has a funny file format on it?
M. -
Vista has a built-in SD driver, but the Ricoh drivers have to be installed to access MS or xD cards.
-
Windows Update picked up some kind of driver for the SD that deals with the other formats for me.
-
I don't suppose anyone has an idea when SP1 will be released on the disc with 64bit Vista? I'm thinking of switching to 64bit and requesting the DVD, but I figure I might as well wait until the DVD also includes SP1.
-
it's currently in RTM, so it should be anytime now that it comes out for the general public. my guess would be beginning of march and they'll have slipstreamed versions of vista. you can also slipstream it yourself if you want. i also wanted to do this, but i got impatient.
-
Thanks for the great guide! I just upgraded to x64 Business and can see the improvements already!
One thing did not work for me, however, and that is on the ATA/AHCI fix. First, my registry setting was never a 4 to begin with, it was 0 the whole time, but I could not boot in AHCI. So I switched to ATA, boot up fine, tried to install the Intel Matrix driver, but it would not. So, I went back into the BIOS, changed back to AHCI, did a warm reboot, hit the BSOD screen, and then (here's the key part), completely shut down and did a cold start up. Vista then booted in AHCI, I installed Intel Matrix driver, and was good to go!
I don't know if anyone has already posted about this, but I thought I would put it out there in case anyone has any trouble. -
that's strange. i don't know if the m1530's have a more up-to-date controller or what. But my friend and I ran our entire installation in AHCI mode from beginning to end. We've never had to go into ATA mode.
-
Who knows, I'm just glad that I got mine working in AHCI
-
Just an FYI about my experience.
I have the 64GB SSD. I went through the hassle of getting the AHCI driver installed under Vista x64. I believe that there was no speed improvement worth mentioning. I did have a situation after a month or so where I was copying some files, and while they were copying I switched from AC to DC power. Shortly after that, the AHCI driver started reporting problems with semaphores, and the machine had to be rebooted.
After reboot, the machine blue screened repeatedly, always with the ahci driver as the fault. I tried a number of steps to revert back to a workable state, and I had to reinstall Vista from scratch.
That said, I refused to do that again, taking the safety of the Microsoft ATA drivers over intel's buggy crap. I really believe on the SSD the benefits of the AHCI driver are just not there. NCQ is the big one and that isn't going to make much if any difference on a system that doesn't have seek times
So that's my experience. -
You are losing a ton of speed by not being in AHCI. I tested it on the disk your probably using which is the Samsung and the result is a 15-20% speed increase in performance with AHCI enabled.
There are a number of articles on the internet that explain why and back up what I am saying.
If you elect to try and use your system at its fullest, let us know. There are plenty here that will assist. You are the first hard luck story I have heard in quite awhile, just reviewing these pages from this thread will show the success we are having. -
Yeah, I had tons of trouble with AHCI until I read this thread. It all works now
I did install Vista twice though!
-
Just got back from a short deployment to Guam...I'm never home nowadays. I've updated the drivers to link most of them directly. Still need to add the mouse and I need to add the USB method for getting the ACHI working. Flamenko, if you have a few mins, could you zip me that link so I can add it? I'm glad this is working out for everyone. Have a great day!

Does anyone have a working touchpad software that disables the touchpad when an external mouse is connected? I tried the Synaptics driver and it doesn't have a disable touchpad option. Should I just use the old 32-bit Dell touchpad software?

Thanks flaxx. Also wondering what are the "upgrade issues" with Vlite image created Vista iso?
