Microsoft coded Vista differently than XP so some updates will not take correctly, random file corruption, ect. Nlite was a great program and vlite is still in the works. I currently recommend against it.
-
I see. So should I make an iso image with Nlite instead of vlite? BTW the touchpad driver you suggested does not have a disable touchpad option.

assuming you installed the right driver i suggested, either your other software (i.e. setpoint) is messing with it, or you have a different touchpad device that triggers different driver options (although i was under the impression that the touchpads were identical for the m1330 and m1530). if you really need that functionality, i'd suggest uninstalling all previous mouse-related drivers (including setpoint) and then reinstall the 64-bit alps driver.
-
Nlite is made for XP, not vista. Also, I posted a slightly newer mouse driver, I don't know if that has the setting you're looking for or not. Let me know and I'll probably adjust is accordingly.

Hey guys, nice thread. I've only recently become more and more interested in upgrading to 64-bit. I currently have 3GB RAM in my m1330. Will I see any noticeable different in typical usage? Boot-time? The reason I am interested is primarily because memory prices have gotten so slow that upgrading to 4GB is now a matter of 30-50 USD. On a side note, is the 1330 capable of handling more than 4GB RAM with the 2 memory slots with vista 64bit?
-
i think the chipset is able to handle any amount of ram (that you can get a hold of anyway), but i'm not sure if 4gb sodimms exist, and if they do, they're probably quite expensive. it won't be long though before you can put 8gb of ram into your laptop
. as for upgrading to 64-bit, i'd love for you to join the trend and be one extra person to cast away 32-bit forever, but you ought to be aware that a 64-bit operating system does use up more ram because all variables are now 64-bit instead of 32-bit long. so expect the kernel to use about 20-40% more memory. so if you upgrade to 64-bit, i'd suggest getting the 4gb of ram and selling off your 3gb. it's cheap to upgrade anyway.
just as a note: that's kernal usage... don't interpret the 20-40% increase in memory usage to be all applications. I found a great article that explains it all here: http://www.tomshardware.com/2008/02/15/vista_workshop/ -
I appreciate the info Flaxx. The link you provided was a great read.

My 1720 sits between 1.1 and 2.0Gb RAM usage, with Superfetch enabled.
Anyone know how you can check and see whats loaded by Superfetch? It would be nice to tell it what you wanted. -
i'm running 64-bit ultimate on my m1330 but i could never get the finger print reader to do anything at all, even with your files, any help?
-
-
I have installed the program and it works fine.
-
Hi guys,
I think my m1330 is almost 100% 64bit compliant, just a question:
Is the default media player running under Media Center 64bit? I got an update from MS using windows update for the 64bit version of MP11. I am asking this because while I watch DVDs, the movie stutters from time to time. I am running this on a T7500 with 4GB of RAM and 64bit SSD so there is no lack of resources on the hardware side. Maybe it's a 32bit MP thing?
The DVD/RW doesn't appear to be the famed Matsush*ta variant. It's a HL-DT-ST GSA-S10N_A100. This is happening with no WiFi on so the laptop is totally interference free. -
-
-
there is both the 32-bit and 64-bit version of media player on vista 64 for compatibility with 32-bit codecs and 64-bit codecs. i haven't installed any codecs and just use VLC player - which currently is only 32-bit
I get the sound jitters though too. It's a vista problem. Sooooo many people are having issues with the audio glitches. I haven't had audio glitches since i owned a Pentium II. I don't know what MS did to vista but it's extremely obnoxious! I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hope it's fixed in SP1.

Yep, treb's instructions are great, and if there is no *32 next to the process then it means it's running in 64bit mode. I was lazy and I didn't do that so it seems like I am still in 32bit hell for WMP. I am still not sure if that is what's causing the DVD playback stutter, though. Could be my drivers, although they are from Laptoptogo.
I am gonna try to switch to 64bit WDM and restart my BSG: Razor movie. Thanks treb.
Edit: That didn't work, and I also noticed that my drive hiccups just a bit right before the DVD stutter. It seems to be making the same sound that it does when it is first powering up. Looks like a seek issue. Also updated the firmware to 101 from 100. Any ideas? I am sure I am not the only one watching DVD movies on my m1330
BTW: On a different note: It's weird but the ALPS drivers don't work for me, only the Synaptics driver. which appears to cripple some of the touchpad capabilities, (gestures?) works. I tried two different 64bit variants from Dell. I find that strange. The driver installs but none of the applications work. I would love to be able to use gestures to go back on a webpage (for example) with a swipe rather then clicking the back button. -

I've only rarely had any audio problems and that's mainly when I'm keeping my notebook on power saving mode. Nvidia's downclocking actually hurts WMP in 32 bit. I've seen video/audio studder in 32-bit mode because my 8400 (probably along with everyone's) is running under a 2d clock setting 170/100. This is enough to cause all sorts of issues. If you run it in 64 bit mode, there isn't any studdering. You can also overclock your video card to 3d clocks in 32 and it runs just smoothly.
As for just audio, I've seen it really infrequently and can't determine if it's just the computer tasking other stuff. -
t7500 has so much excessive processing power and massive (relatively speaking) buffers for audio IC, there's no chance audio should EVER SKIP. i've had my computer completely locked up (or so it seemed) and my music is still playing in windows XP. it's purely vista and has nothing to do with enough processing power. HOWEVER, on the plus side, my friend who has the exact same computer/drivers/etc said SP1 just automatically installed on his x64 setup, and there's no audio glitches anymore except when he ejects a dvd. Woohoo! Hope that applies to everyone.
-
My glitches are mainly video-based and have to do with the seek on my Hitachi DVD drive. The drive seems to randomly start spinning (more than normal) every 20 or so minutes. It's weird, and I am not so sure if it is Vista or not.
-
From what I have found, if your computer is running in other than max performance in vista, disks will have to spin up every so often and you'll see a pause then. For videos on your computer, if you're running in 32 bit mode, nvidia downclocks your video card to the point it skips. I've confirmed this by overclocking the video card to standard clock speeds and the audio completely stops skipping.
Vista is definitely responsible for the disk spin up pause.
Vista is NOT responsible for AVI,MPEG,ect audio skips.
Vista might be responsible for mp3 skipping, but like I said earlier, I rarely see it (once in a day while doing something else processor intensive)
A little off topic:
I just found out that one of my best friends, Ali, died in an F-15 mid-air collision down in Florida. My wife has taken it a bit hard because it's way too close to home with my flying job as well.
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,331558,00.html
His name hasn't been released yet, but should be within the next few days...I found out from his wife. Our job is a very risky business and we take these risks every day. He will be missed. -
I am sorry for your loss. Yes, the job is dangerous business. Stay safe.

I am struggling with finding an NVIDIA driver for the 8400 GS on my m1330 dell doesn't have one, and when i try and go to http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=17291 it doesn't want to load for me? Anyone help or tell me what i need to do to install current video drivers?
-
It works just fine here. Try it again.

Hi,
I don't get it where i have to find the AHCI inf file to put on the usb stick. I downloaded the intel matrix storage software, but it's an exe file and no zip containing the inf. I tried to open it with winrar but it doesnt work. So my question, were do i find the files to put on the usb stick?
ty in advance
btw which is the best touchpaddriver? synaptic or alps? My only wish is that the scrolloption works -
Weird, I installed Windows Vista Business x64 SP1 OEM and the only driver I had to install was the upek fingerreader. I have no BSOD, or any porblems, is this normal?
I deleted dell media direct, is there a method to remap the dell media direct button (to start outlook for example?)
ty in advance -
-
Edit: Both Synaptics and Alps will give you scrolling but Alps doesn't work for me. Your mileage may vary. -
I downloaded the dvd from usenet and used my original vista business x64 key to activate, thx for ahci drivers!
-
Wow, Trebuin, I'm so sorry for that happening for you and your wife. I cannot imagine the risk that goes into that job, but I certainly can appreciate it.
-
You should remove the winbeta.org link since they do not provide a mainstream iso of Vista 64 bit anymore.
-
I already removed the instructions but you can still request it from some of the admins there.
-
I recently installed Vista 64bit with only a few problems (kept failing at 99% until I wiped/cleaned the disk as suggested somewhere in this forum as a last resort) and then it installed fine.
I've also managed to find drivers for everything and it sees all of my new 4gb of RAM which I installed at the same time.
The only problem/worry I have is a strange screen that flashes just after the BiOS loads and before the first Windows loading screen. It's white writing on a black background and is too fast to read but I manage to catch words that think include AHCI and Ram. Once when trying to load the BiOS setup I pressed F2 a little late (during this mystery screen) and it gave me the option of doing the memory diagnostic test. I started the test, saw that it was taking ages and went to bed. The next morning my computer was in the log in screen and when I logged in I saw nothing about the results of the memory test.
I didn't do any bench marks before I upgraded to 64bit and my new RAM and i'm worried there's a problem going on under the hood which is affecting my system performance.
Any help would be appreciated and sorry about this long post!
Stoned Hippy -
Your AHCI driver is either not installed properly or is incompatible. Go to Intel and download the latest AHCI driver.
-
Read everything but having a problem or maybe not.
I got my Red XPS M1330 with 64 gig SSD (works out to 59.5 gigs). Popped in 800 mhz 4 gb ram from crucial. Have the HD Soundso no EAX for me. Problem number one the bios says the memory is only 667 anyone know how to tell it that it is 800 mhz.
Next ran the system as is and everything worked.
So now time to re-pave the sucker with 64 Vista Ultimate. And this is where I may have screwed up.
1) Install 64 Vista telling it about the AHCI driver during the partitioning. Everything working ok.
2) Install Intel chip set driver
3) Installed Broadcom
4) Installed WiFi
5) probably the source of my problem - did a windows update
6) Installed remaining drivers
Symptons number pad not working
2 data interface devices showing up as unknown
But in looking it looks like everything is working like iTunes using the remote well except for the number lock
Any ideas or should I start over? -
I wish that someone would bring EAX up to 64 bit, but I'll live with that for now. Go to your device manager and bring up the properties for the two unknown devices. In the details tab, you should be able to get a hardware ID. Post the Ven, Dev, and Subsys numbers. You can actually google these to see what they are. I remember the ricoh drivers had to be manually installed in the past. This may still hold true.

Looks to be the Bluetooth Devices
USB\VID_413C&PID_8136&MI_00
Thought I installed the Bluetooth devices but maybe not. Of course I have another problem now - looks like interrupted XPTune
So I am going to try again and post back what I did. It could speedup install if you have a fast enough Internet connection.
[Edit] Turns out it was the cellular modems. -
This worked for a M1330 with A08 bios shipped on Feb 22, 2008.
- Installed A09 bios
- Install Vista Ultimate x64 off DVD - deleting all partitions and installing AHCI driver
- Install Intel Chipset driver and reboot - NOTE: the following is working sound including buttons volume up, volume down, mute and LCD brightness working. Note working number pad portion of keyboard and note number lock light is on
- Install Broadcom and Intel Wifi drivers and reboot
- Configure WiFi and verify network connection
- Remove unwanted features - recommended to speed up updating
- Run WindowsUpdate
- Repeat the above step until no more updates
- LCD display including brightness controls and Aero can be enabled
- Sound although not the greatest
- SD/Mini/xSD Cards
- Remote if you have one
- Network connections
- Webcam control applet installed
- Mouse although no scrolling and no turning off tapping to click
- Keyboard
- Bluetooth at least partially I saw bluetooth device from XPS
- Number pad
- Sound EAX, microphone and better quality sound outut
- Fingerprint reader
- Wifi Catcher application not launching
- Cellular modem if present
- Install Synaptics or Alps Touchpad
- Install Fingerprint Reader
- Install cellular modem driver if one is installed this requires the dell mobile broadband driver and the specific carrier driver
- Install Dell Quickset
- Run windows update to make sure no more updates
To speed this up I suggest that you put the following on a USB drive
- AHCI drivers
- Intel chipset driver
- Broadcomm drivers
- WiFi drivers
- Dell broadband driver and network operator specific driver if cellular modem installed
- Fingerprint reader
- Sigmatel Sound Driver (R171788.exe gets mic array working)
- QuickSet
I had 53 processes running consuming about 1 gb ram and stored in 24 gig of space.
Start installing your applications! -
Good guide--thanks.

Sorry if this answer has already been posted, but I'm at work so I couldn't read all 40 pages. I have a 1330 on the way, and I would like to put 64 bit on it. What's the easiest way to get the OS? My 1330 has Vista Ultimate, so I would need the Ultimate 64bit edition. If I go to the windows marketplace and order a replacement Ultimate 64 bit disk, will I be able to use the key that's on the laptop when it comes in? Thanks in advance.
-
has anyone had any AHCI issues with their M1530? i am looking to put V64 on my lappy, been reading through here and i am alittle bit lost its the SATA/HDD driver the laptop is having issues with yeah?
-
There is another, better, method to transfer you license--since it skips MS activation--which is to backup the activation files using a program called ABR. This method is perfectly legal.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=120228
Many thanks to orev for an excellent guide. -
^^ so thats a confirmation that the cdkey stuck on the laptop that is for V32 works for V64 no problems? wouldnt it be in micro$ofts best interest to make you pay for V64?
-
well you still have to pay for the dvd...
-
The same key works for both 32 bit or 64 bit software. However, you WILL likely have to call MS if you use the key at the bottom of the laptop to activate.
-
So, I ordered a DVD for ultimate 64. My computer gets here today, so I'm planning on activating it with the 32bit and using it until the dvd gets here. Then backing up the activation files using the method mentioned a couple post ago and installing the 64 bit version using the first post as a reference. If this won't work, please let me know. thanks again.

Sounds like a plan
We are here to help if something goes awry, hehe!
