My XPS 12 order is 2 months old and still no estimated delivery date, I'm thinking of abandoning ship and going for something else. Anyone have recommendations for other hybrid laptops that are silent, have high build quality, 12.5"+ screen size and preferrably better battery life?

IT'S SHIPPED!
Order 01/20/2013. Received an email saying it shipped 01/26/2013. Estimated arrival date 02/13/2013?!
Wow 2 weeks to receive it after it been shipped? -
The XPS 12 does not have an active digitizer, but can anyone coment on thir experience in using the XPS 12 to take handwritten notes? Also, has anyone found a capactive pen that makes handwritten recognition more effective? Im still thinking between the XPS 12 and the Lenovo Helix.

Hi, you should have got an estimated delivery date straight away ( whether it would have been stuck to or not is another issue altogether - but at least you should have got one) have you contacted dell? What did they say? Just wondering as my EDD is like 5 weeks from my order date but at least they gave me a date. If you dont mind me asking what country are you in?
I read somewhere that the delays are being caused by the unexpected high demand for touchscreen hardware and the demand outstripping supply, this is supposedly across all the makers of the new hybrid touchscreen laptops not just dell - which makes sense, but highly frustrating non-the less! -

Touchpad works amazingly well now after that last driver download. No issue at all.

Yea I got a date she order it was 02/12/13. Since I got that email yesterday saying it shipped, in would think the delivery date would be revised since in had ups 2 day ...

Norway, since its my company that's buying it, they have a policy on buying everything through a retailer they get heavy discounts from, so the delivery dates are not directly from Dell.
They have the i5 version in stock though, but I'm getting cold feet about the 1.56kg. -
My deal wasn't too bad.. I7 + 8gb +128 ssd for 1150 ish before tax
-
Oh I see, well I guess you will most definantly receive it before your estimated delivery date, there's no way it can take that long to ship. Probably best to keep checking your email rather than that tracking thing that dell give as I've heard of some other people saying it sometimed gets updated after delivery, so it doesn't seem very reliable IMO. A proper tracking number would have been helpful, what are you supposed to do if you need to go to work or out somewhere? You don't want your laptop being thrown about in a delivery van for a few days until you can be at home to receive it!!
I'm in the UK and nowadays for most large purchases we get an email when it's shipped and a text, aswell as a text the day before its due to arrive with an estimated delivery time. But this won't be happening with dell apparently, poor service for an expensive item. -
Oh then perhaps it will take a bit longer to arrive since it would go to the retailer first. Will you need to carry it with you a lot? Or are you worried about it being heavy as a tablet? Tbh I'm not worried about the weight of it as I will mainly use it in my home/office but will sometimes need to take it out with me when I visit clients but I will be travelling by car and visiting them at their properties as I'm an interior designer, so ill be sitting at a table with them not standing around holding it in one hand - then I really would be worried about that weight! I'm hoping it will be small enough to be moderately portable but large enough with a decent enough display that clients can see everything clearly. I suppose it all comes down to what your specific needs are, I wouldn't want to be carting it about day in day out on public transport for example, in that case I'd buy a lighter ultra book and a separate tablet. Anyway good luck in whatever you decide and I hope it works out for you.

SO i installed the new trackpad specific XPS 12 drivers and I have the wonky controls now.. as I scroll down on trackpad it shifts windows, zooms in and out.. does all sorts of unwanted movements. I think those XPS 13 drivers worked better for me.
-
Would you mind linking me to the XPS 13 driver that worked better for you? Currently I'm having all the problems you mentioned above with the default XPS 12 drivers.
-
UPDATE 3: Dell tech came by. Replaced the screen. Same issue. I am now getting a system exchange. Hopefully that will fix it... -
Got mine yesterday. I like it very much. No touchpad problems.
Had trouble creating recovery flash drive. Win 8 did not recognize the drive initially. Worked after multiple attempts.
I upgraded from Win 8 to Win 8 pro. The easiest way to do this is by using the 'Add feature ' option. We just need to provide the pro key. No reinstall required.

I ordered my XPS 12 on 1/17 i got all excited yesterday because i got a shipping notice, but then i had no tracking number. The rep emailed me and told me it had completed build and was in transit to their US shipping facility. So hopefully i'll get mine soon. Mine was ordered from the gov prime side. i5 4gb mem 128mb drive windows 8 pro.
their delivery dates are really weird. when you look on the prime side the eta is 3/13. when you look at the home small business side the eta is 2/13. -
I ordered mine on 6-Jan (i5 8GB 256GB), still in pre-production (I hate that word now after checking every day!), I have phoned up Dell a few times who tell me the components (display?) should be arriving the 1st week of February, my EDD is 14-Feb but didn't want to believe it would take that long....Sadly I was wrong!
I just hope it will be worth the wait.... -
I've had my XPS 12 since early November and it's been great, but recently I noticed that the automatic screen orientation has stopped working and the screen rotation lock button no longer functions. The only way I can change the screen orientation is through Control Panel. Before calling Dell I thought I'd post here to make sure that I'm not missing something obvious.

Sweeet! Confirmation!
Order 01/20/2013, confirmed delivery 01/28/2013 (received at home!)
XPS12
Intel i7 Core
8GB RAM
128 SSD
Sweet...Now, should I return the Mushkin 480SSD and wait for Crucial M500 or keep Mushkin...muaha!!!
By the way, anyone got a You Tube video or guide on how to replace the SSD? I can't seem to find one -
Know THAT feeling! Lol
-
nice sounds like your one of the lucky ones.
-
I think I told someone before that it was either quickset or the system software, but I can't remember which one worked for him. I would try downloading the QuickSet driver first and see if that fixes anything, and then if there is a system software driver (usually titled DELL SYSTEM SOFTWARE) try that too.

Dell has an online repair manual for ALL their systems. It's quite great. Also Bill Bivin (who works at Dell) says that dell allows you to take apart and replace components yourself and have it still be covered under warranty. Now of course they can't cover the part you put in if it is third party or you cause damage, but you still have the ability to take it apart and be under warranty. Anyways, here is the manual for the XPS 12! http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...=KsXo3K5e-vL1NOQoD5jLJg&bvm=bv.41642243,d.aWc
Sorry for the double post! EDIT: Wrong Quote -
I had this problem within a day of owning this. Pressing the screen lock button still brought up the 'on/off' indicators on screen (when in tablet mode), but didn't actually do anything useful. Anyway long story short I set the rotate using the button to 'off', restarted, and when I turned auto-rotate back on it was working again.

So far,
Created the recover disc
upgrade to Win 8 Pro and create ISO disc
update all windows files
update all dell files
time to go to sleep, will have time to play with it more tomorrow and maybe do a clean install this weekend. With system deliver, approx 70 GB free, not too bad..we'll see how much is left over after I install Sharepoint Foundation + Office 2013 + Lightroom 4.3 + Photoshop CS 5.1
== Question
I read somewhere that Dell now put the Windows Product Key inside the BIOS? So since I purchase this with Win 8 non-pro, and now have the pro ISO DVD, I can just install the pro upgrade directly right for clean install? -
I don't know if you saw this or not cause I quoted the wrong person accidentally, but I provided the link to the repair manual where you will find out how to replace the SSD. The quote is fixed now too.
-
How did you manage to get one shipped 1 week after ordering?? The rest of us have to wait 5+ weeks if not more because of component shortages (LCD?)
-
I order via EPPBUY.....
Called up the sale rep, placed the order on 01/20/2013....received it yesterday.... -
Yup, thank you for the info. Looks easy to do. Just a few screw and remove at the bottom.

Few Ideas. Did you disable or uninstall the dell quick set recently? as that allows the button to work if not i would remove it and re download it from Drivers & Downloads | Dell United States
also make sure your bios is uptodate A05
also Make sure you are running Intel Video card driver 9.17.10.2849 and 9.17.10.2849 only if newer or older remove it and reinstall it as it may be the issue i have had no luck with any other Driver. -
Thanks to everyone who offered solutions. I made sure all my drivers were updated but the problem persisted. This morning I spent about an hour on the phone with Dell tech support and they finally determined that it's a hardware problem. Dell is sending a tech to replace the screen rotation lock button.
-
My XPS 12 arrived today and I must say that I am very happy with it overall. Unfortunately I am experiencing the jittery touchpad issues as well, it seems to be the Cypress drivers rather than any HW issue since when I uninstall the drivers completely the pointer works perfectly (obviously I don't get any gesture support or anything however).
I'll be in touch with Dell but if anyone has any suggestions then I am more than happy to give it a go! I have already tried the latest release of the drivers from the Dell support site, A04 I believe; the ones released on the 24th. -
got a tracking number this morning mine should be delivered tomorrow.

Anyone else having problems with the webcam randomly not being detected? I'll go to use Skype or something and notice that it doesn't see the webcam. Goes missing in the device manager as well. Sometimes it'll come back on its own after rebooting. Did see a message today after waking the machine from sleep saying that a USB device wasn't recognized but of course it didn't tell me which USB device. Guessing it's the webcam...
-
Uninstall the webcam driver from device manager and reinstall the webcam driver from dell's website. If that doesn't work it may be a hardware problem or a problem with skype.
-
-
You need to contact dell, they may send someone out to change the screen so you won't have to wait again for a complete replacement of the entire laptop. That's just unacceptable and shouldn't have even left the factory in that condition! Don't settle.
-
Dell will send someone no problem. BEWARE though the screens may be on back order. I had to wait almost two and a half weeks to get my screen replaced because the LCD was on back order.
-
Yeah I bought the machine with 1 year pro support, so they're sending out a technician tomorrow to replace the screen on-site
-
ProSupport is great! I have it on my XPS as well. I hope you ordered from Small and Home Office or Small and Medium Business because it is automatically included in the cost and there is no cost difference between the home version or the SMB version.
-
There are no webcam drivers available on Dell's site. It appears to be using a stock MS driver built into Windows. I've tried removing the device and letting it get re-detected. It isn't a skype issue as the device disappears completely from the device manager. Nothing can see the webcam.
-
Yeah I was unsure of whether there was a driver for it on their website. If it's disappearing and re-appearing from device manager I'd place a bet on hardware problem in this case.
-
I have had my XPS since December and have not been happy with the track pad responses, even with the newly released driver it would work for a while and then intermittently stop responding but I found if I end task the following in services:
CyTPServices.exe
CyHidWin.exe
CyCplo.exe
The pad felt and responded a lot better, I have lost the zooming/panning but that annoyed me anyway and still have the 2 finger scroll working.
As for the Wifi, even after Intels recent update mine still plays up every now and then, mainly coming out of sleep but even sometimes out of the blue. This only happens on my home network and it is definitely the XSP12 as all the other machines and devices (Xbox, XPS15, Alienware M14, phones ect ect) can connect to the network fine whilst the XPS throws its hissy fit. I find disabling and re-enabling the device normally works (I think windows and Intel fights over the management of the Wifi and clashes over who has control over the device.)
My next step is to disable windows from controlling the Wifi and Intel have sole control.
I also had the touch screen stop working but that only happened once and I did a reboot.
PS for those interested the screen rotate function and button only works in full tablet mode and the manual way of changing screen rotating in desktop mode is "CTRL"+"ALT"+"(direction arrow)" -
Still waiting for mine to go into production.
Estimated delivery date is still 15/02/2013
This must be the longest I have ever waited for a computer. It had better be great & perfect! -
You'll be disappointed. It ain't as seem less and perfect built like Asus UX31a or Mac air. Close, but no cigar. Touch screen is nice, but finicky. The trim and flip concept is cool, but not too practical.

I have owned my XPS 12 for about 10 days and I am very pleased with the machine thus far. I have the I5 with 8 GB of RAM and the 256 SSD.
I've also been intrigued with the prospect of playing touch games in tablet mode (i travel on a commuter train for 45 minutes to and from work) and Civ 5 bills itself as touch screen/ultrabook optimized. Unfortunately I could not find any users with a report on their experience playing Civ 5 on a touchscreen ultrabook (with the exception of 1 youtube video that was only marginally helpful).
I decided that I wanted to play Civ 5 this weekend so I took a leap of faith and bought the game and the expansion pack.
I am very happy to report that it works very well! I'm running the game at 1920x1080 and it looks gorgeous. I've put in about 5 hours and 175 turns and the game remains very smooth. With one 30 minute exception, I've run it in in tablet mode. The touch interface works like a dream. Everything is clickable, so information is literally at your fingertips. Selecting, scrolling, panning, zooming all work well, with barely any learning curve.I'm playing a standard size map with 7 opponents and at least half a dozen city states. Turn wait times average about 15 seconds, which is not a problem. I'm still in the middle game, so I wouldn't be surprised to see wait times increase in the late game.
Battery life is about 90-120 minutes on a full charge while playing. The back gets a bit warm, but not uncomfortably so.
My only complaint, and it is a minor one, is that the popup text is small. That said, I'm quite used to it, and haven't had a problem clicking my desired text option.
I hope you find this helpful. -
Thanks for that, I'm looking to play SWTOR and Sim City. I'm not expecting the world but i hope it will run them on low settings at least.Ordering my i7 8gb 256ssd today, the shipping date is showing 8 March, so I'm hoping for a mid march delivery date.
It would be great if they did an XPS12 with a discrete graphics card
-
After getting a screen replacement, touch seems to be completely disabled, there's no "pen and touch" configuration in control panel either.
Any tips on some config setting to get it activated again before I call Dell? -
Strange, turned on my XPS 12 today and everytime I flip the screen it goes from landscape to portrait even though I haven't touched the settings and the button on the side seems to make no difference. Any ideas? Could just be me missing something very obvious.
-
Some of the XPS's 12 touch screens are truly messed up. I have a unit where touch does not work and hasn't since I got it. I have noticed a lot of people on Dells site who are having same issues where screen and motherboard replacements have not worked. This is a huge deal for me as I only got this for the touch features and spec's. Dell does not seem to have any idea what is wrong either as none of the people have gotten a resolution...
-
Those of you that have functioning touch screens, is your monitor identified as "Generic PnP Display" ?
