Yeah most definitely. I just cant decide whether it would be worth it to try and get the i9 or just saves some money and get the i7 instead. There's also another conundrum that there might be a new xps 15 soon, and that new xps 9300 is such a beautiful little thing.

I have a dell xps 15 9550 that i bought many years ago. Orocessor is i5-6300hq processor. Has 256gb ssd and 8gb ram. I have that 3 cell battery 56wh only though. Im running a bit low on space on my laptop have just a bit over 40gb available. I had my laptop battery replaced 1 times when i bought it off ebay from a seller that supposed sell legit battery... paid 100 for it compared to other sellers years ago. But battery is worn out now.

Im thinking about getting the bigger battery 84whr or 97whr if thats allowed and then get a 512gb m.2 ssd or maybe even 1tb m.2 ssd. And upgrade ram from 8gb to 16gb. That will probably cost like $500 total at least when buying the products and having them installed on a computer store.

From looking at dell's site, they sell the 7590. Would you say its better to buy a new laptop like the 7590 vs upgrading all my parts for my xps 9550? It still functions good though and i like it. Thus if i had the bigger battery laptop and just needed to replace that and say i had a 512gb m.2 ssd already on my laptop, i would not consider upgrading. But years ago i had no idea the xps i bought came with that 56wh battery. It does contain a 32gb m.2 ssd though. But from looking at the 7590, you can buy it at a much lower price if you get the one that is 1099.99 but then you have to manually upgrade the ram from 8gb to 16gb and the 256gb ssd to 512gb yourself right? They dont seem to give you option to upgrade both of those... why is that? There is a 50 dollar upgrade for the 6 cell 97wh battery which would be automatic for me if i do that.

But it would be best to buy the 1549.99 configuration one right? You can upgrade ram from 8gb to 16gb for 100 dollars and 256gb m.2 sd to 512gb for 50 dollars. That is a no brainer of course right for those two?

What is a bit confusing is if you do the 1st configuration with the cheaper 1099.99 one, the processor is i5-9300H compared to i7-9750h. There is a huge difference between these 2 right since one is i5 vs i7? Is the i5-9300H much faster compared to my current i5-6300hq?

And with the first configuration, you can upgrade to the nvidia geforce gtx 1650 4gb gddr5 for 250 dollars more. Now is that necessary? I don't play any video games though. But i do play online poker in it and use programs that uses lot of resources.

If i were to get this 7590, get the 1549.99 configuration and upgrade right?

It’ probably obvious by now, but this thread is largely dead. You would have better luck asking in another more active owners thread. The 7590 is probably the best version of the XPS15 to date, but is not moving any mountains in public perception as the overall design is probably in need of a refresh in some big way, similar to the XPS13. Second, rumor is that the 2020 refresh for the XPS15 is due in April, so that will generate the buzz shortly, especially if they make any dramatic refinements, additions, etc.

My recommendation to you - is go on the Dell outlet when they are offering numerous coupons (locality dependent), and get a refurb Core i5 with GTX1650 for under 900 bucks. At least in the US, I’ve see that deal several times - and if you do not need any GPU power, you can usually find a base model pretty cheap, but you want to make sure you get the 97Whr battery!

I recently grabbed a Core i7 for 910 bucks before tax - and the machine is incredible! I think the XPS15 design has almost reached Macbook Pro level for just being a fairly timeless outstanding design - I do not think the next model will necessarily dramatically change the design too dramatically because of this.

Hello, I have been holding off on installing the newest BIOS 1.5 on my XPS 15 7950 OLED, because @improwise voiced concerns (Post #268) about certain features not available. Is this still valid or should I just go ahead and install? I tend to like keeping everything up to date.

"DISCLAIMER : undervolt don't work anymore with this BIOS! DELL has patched the undervolt security flaw with this version. DO NOT INSTALL IF YOU CARE ABOUT UNVERVOLTING"

    https://www.reddit.com/r/Dell/comments/fr0j8v/xps_15_7590_psa_undervolting_gone_in_bios_160/

    @unclewebb @Papusan

Cant confirm, if this is true... well... this would be huge. Dont see a 1.6.0 so far on Dells site.

    https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/throttlestop-undervolting-isnt-changing-anything.264262/

Totally indeed looks like crappy Dell being crappy Dell and implements the undervolt block on their customer line laptops. With no option in the bios to toggle it back on.

The XPS is unusable without undervolt and a meltdown machine. This is not acceptable. There needs to be a ****storm happening, to force Dell to implement a switch in bios for this.

    This is madness!!!

The new version of ThrottleStop allows us to increase PROCHOT to 100*c (in the options menu that is an offset in *c from 100*c factory). I don't think this is a typical throttling reason on the older XPS models but might be for the higher core newer XPS particularly the i9.

You can also disable and lock turbo power limits in the FIVR menu, although I think Dell has a register that is inaccessable so this trick might work better on certain laptops.

Dell has a lot of throttle gates on these XPS laptops but every trick can help IMHO.

    Hi,

recently I bought the 7590 i9, unfortunately I observe that while browsing (scrolling) websites and watching Youtube (1080 and 4k) the internal GPU ist under a load of 40-55%! Is this normal?

    4K Youtube: Edge, Chrome: 48-50%, Firefox 62% GPU-load.

When switching hardware acelerating off in chrome settings, videos stutter.

I mean, the Intel UHD 630 is quite new, my old notebook did not have such high gpu-load.

    Any hints?

    Edit:
Using "Intel Graphics Command Center" I switched off any post-processing. No change in GPU-usage.

@Hansilein Stuttering while scrolling? no not normal, update drivers or do a clean Windows 10 install, use adblock and noscript (where possible). Also use the new Edge, instead of Chrome, it has better HW acceleration. The UHD630 isnt new, it is basically a renamed HD620 and kinda also 520. Thats Intels scam. What do you mean with GPU usage. While watching a 4k movie, in task manager? Yes, thats normal. I have 60% GPU usage watching a 4k video in Chrome: https://i.imgur.com/d2Q0UNK.png

The GPU use gets worse if you use windows scaling. The Intel HD520 (since renamed a couple of times, but otherwise nearly identical in terms of power - the video decode ASIC is separate, and did get an upgrade to support VP9, but no other performance increases) IGP has barely enough power to drive 4k displays.

It's stuttering when watching Youtube videos with HW acceleration switched off in Chrome, although the CPU is not at 100%. But as it is normal to have 40% GPU-usage, I use GPU-HW acceleration.

Regarding the clean install, do you get rid of all "?s" in the device manager with the drivers offered at dell.com? Or to rephrase it, will everything work fine?

BTW, the 15GB partition on the SSD is a recovery version of Windows, right?

Ok will try out 100% zoom, just for fun :)

Not everyone wants the Microsoft account syncing. I use Chrome and only Chrome because of the integration with Android. All my bookmarks/passwords are always in sync so let's try to help him with his issue rather than suggesting another browser. That's like hiding the problem not fixing it.

Thanks, I installed the new Edge (Chromium) and the GPU-load dropped from 3x% with the old Edge to 30% when playing Youtube 4K :)

After three days using tis new notebook, I'm quite impressed and satisfied with it. Only disadvantge is the missing Numpad, however I knew it prior ordering.

    Hi,

I have a brand new 7590 with the 4k IPS touch screen. But I am having a weird issue with the screen flickering.

When on minimum/low brightness the flickering is like random drops in brightness, it seems to be triggered more often when I click on the trackpad to move a window. Its most noticeable on white.

I tried a different charger and the issue went away, but the issue also persist to a lesser extend when on battery.

    Is this normal?

I am in the 14 days return period so I can swap it no issue.

    Thanks
    Dan

So I looked at this laptop and have a few questions about the configurations.

    1,549.99

    • 9th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-9750H
    • Windows 10 Home
    • NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1650 4GB GDDR5
    • 8GB DDR4-2666MHz, 2x4G
    • 256GB M.2 PCIe NVMe Solid State Drive
    15.6" FHD (1920 x 1080) InfinityEdge Anti-Glare Non-touch IPS 100% sRGB 500-Nits display

    1,779.99

    • 9th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-9750H
    • Windows 10 Home
    • NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1650 4GB GDDR5
    • 16GB DDR4-2666MHz, 2x8G
    • 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe Solid State Drive
    15.6" 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) OLED InfinityEdge Anti-Reflective Non-Touch 100% DCI-P3 400-Nits display

Now if you were to upgrade the ram and ssd on the first config, it comes to
    $1,699.99

Now I"m assuming many would also upgrade to windows pro as well for 60 dollars more. But would you do this if you already have window ten pro on your old xps 9550 for example? Could i transfer the windows ten pro from my xps 9550 to the new one...? But if i were to do this, i have to basically wipe my xps 9550 ssd clean and start new right? Or do ppl just pay another 60 dollars for the windows ten pro.

Now i see when you don't add the windows ten pro... having the UHD... basically cost 80 dollars more. Now is it worth it or not? So basically that UHD is an additiona 80 dollars right? Now my thinking is... assuming you use it by itself and don't connect it to an external monitor, its good right? But if its almost always connected to monitor, no point? Also is the letters going to be so small on sites with the UHD screen when visiting site?

Now if you get this screen, you are sacrificing battery life right? Anyone know how much its giving up? So basically with this UHD screen, even if you make battery/brightness settings much lower, its still going to have lower battery life compared to the laptop without that UHD screen right?

Now let say you are someone that cares a lot about the battery life. Would you say if both laptops were same price... same configurations... but you could have the FHD option or the UHD option, would it be extremely foolish to choose the FHD one? My 9550 is FHD and i like it... but i do have it connected to external monitors almost always.

Im guessing most ppl here dont pay more for the UHD? Who are the ppl who want UHD? I mean ppl who travel certainly not right since well they want longer battery? Im guessing its more ppl who are using it plugged in but no external monitor? Is it foolish for me to think the screen UHD is useless if you connect it to two monitors almost always etc?

Also I"m curious but what ram and ssd brand does dell provide in these laptops? Surely they are not the samsung 970 evo series ones right? Are there ppl here who buy dell laptop and replace the ssd dell supplies them with a samsung evo series ssd instead? Because those are the best? But are the ssd brand dell gives... is it similar to samsung evo or are they SATA drives? I heard sata drives are ssds but not as fast as samsung evos. My dell xps 9550 ssd is a samsung sata ssd i bought years ago.

Unless you absolutely need a laptop, I'd hold off. New XPS 15 out soon with a lot of improvements, internal and external. It's going to be significant, and if it's not your cup of tea the price of the 7590 will be drastically lower.

The only thing that steers me away from AMD is the lack of ability to undervolt the CPU. AMD needs to step it up there.

Yes they did unless you have a decent laptop bios that supports undervolting there.

Because of the nature of the new Ryzen4000 CPUs being 7nm, I doubt that undervolting is as important, as it was on Intels 14nm process. It is already shown, that the Ryzen4000 CPUs are just not way waster, they also use way less power and arent running in the 90-100°C like Intel. Also it was shown, that undervolting isnt as good on the Ryzen CPUs as it is on Intel, they kinda work not the same with boost. These mobile Ryzen4000 CPUs have already an optimal power curve and undervolting wouldnt make any sense with them.

There is always room to undervolt. My 3700x and 3900x responded pretty well to undervolting. I keep hearing about how optimal the power curve on the 4k series is, but AMD isn't dumb, they won't run the CPUs on the ragged edge and risk having errors. Brings me back to my point, there is always room to undervolt.

I disagree. Like I said... undervolting isnt optimal on the current 7nm ZEN2 CPUs, there was an article about it but I dont know where it was. It was proven that undervolting is having a negative effect on performance, and isnt as straight forward, as it is on Intel CPUs. So if you use undervolt on your desktop ZEN2 CPUs, I strongly advice to not using it. There was also another article about RYZEN4000 mobile CPUs, who kinda take advantage of the lower power profile curve, and therefore undervolting is even more not worth it on them.

So my two CPUs are special? And it's as easy as adding a negative offset. And yes if you undervolt by too much you can decrease your scores, but I can assure you my scores went up because of the additional thermal headroom.

    *on edit*
    Here is Steve's results with a 3900x
    https://www.gamersnexus.net/guides/3494-amd-ryzen-3000-undervolting-offset-override

Basically it's similar to Intel in regards that it depends on the CPU. I think my 3900x is at -0.07 and I forgot what my 3700x is at, but I think it's a little less. Still good enough for a few degrees...

This shows, that undervolt is not optimal and using limited power budget is way better for these CPUs. It also shows, that the <=45W ZEN2, which are the mobile ones, are already having the most optimal linear curve possible. Undervolting wont bring them really anything at all, I am sure tests will show that.

It shows that 0.05v is the optimal undervolt. In my Dell XPS 7390, 0.035V is enough to drop 8C...

Youre comparing to Intel again with different technology. Undervolting would have a performance loss on these <=45W ZEN2. So maybe you might be able to undervolt the mobile ZEN2, but what might 0,001V offset do... nothing.

Yes and I saw similar results with my Zen 2 CPUs (both of them). You can't prove that it won't help. I can't prove that it will, but I can extrapolate from my experience with the same architecture (albeit higher wattage)...

Unfortunately it looks like it will be another year before we see these excellent mobile CPUs inside a premium product like the XPS...

I dont consider the XPS line premium. Was totally my first and last XPS (9570) I ever bought. Next time maybe a Lenovo, well see.

    Really, Why not?

    By premium I refer to:
    * Body martials
    * Form factor
    * Screen
    * Screen to body ratio

It will be interesting to see which company does come out with a premium product with AMD chips first...

Im thinking og buying the FHD version.
Does anyone have any experience with this?
Hows the battery life? What about noise and thermal problems?

My 9560, while usable, is suffering from heat issues and other weird problems (specifically, after about 10-20 minutes of gaming on the dGPU, it seems to switch to the iGPU, based on what I see in Task Manager. The UI and cursor also can slow down when on battery, a problem I've had since day one).

Since I'd bought 3-year ProSupport that's set to expire in a couple months, I chanced it with tech support and they miraculously offered me a refurbished OLED 7590 i7 (with double the RAM and storage). So, props to Dell on that one.

    Of course, I'm worried there's a catch -- it's a devil-you-know vs. devil-you-don't situation, and I don't want to have a dead / hobbled laptop that'll soon be out of warranty.

What things should I look out for? I've skimmed this thread and Reddit a bit but still don't have a good sense of what's "normal" and what's not. The CPU seems to be getting hot very quickly, and is idling around 50 C, although it may be because the indexer is still going. Undervolting to 120 mV seemed to help somewhat (I only ran the XTU benchmark, but after 20 minutes it was stable at around 3.8-4.0 GHz and 90 C), but it appeared to cause crashing on wakeup and I've yet to test lower values. I'm also wondering if I should go for a repaste, or if that's likely not a problem with refurbs.

EDIT: Undervolting with ThrottleStop apparently remedied the crash-on-sleep problem, and TS Bench runs error-free at 120 mV. I'm currently running Prime95 and temps seem to rapidly oscillate between high 70s and high 90s, but I don't know if I should be concerned.

The 7590 will be an upgrade in every way. Do you have the 7590 already? If so, doing the usual stuff like running benchmarks and testing all of the ports is a good thing to do. Rapidly oscillating temps isn't a concern. A 120 mV undervolt is pretty decent. A repaste may net you a couple of degree drop so you have to determine if that's worth it to you.

Yes, I do have it already, and it's good to know oscillation isn't a problem, thanks! Hadn't thought about testing ports, that's a good idea. I'll look at some reviews to see that my benchmarks are competitive.

There is an option in TS for that:

-120mV is already very critical, can work, mostly will result in crashes you dont see as an app crash, and might bring unseen problems, for example while playing a video in Chrome. A more safer undervolt is around -100mV.

Thanks for the tip! Do you think -120mV is not safe even if I get no errors in single- and multi-threaded TS Bench, and passed all tests in a 4-hour Prime95 run? (It's unseasonably warm weather this week so I'm waiting before I do a longer run).

@blippo2 From my own experiences, I would say minus 90-100mV are 99.9% safe, but at -120mV and above it becomes more critical, maybe around 99% stable at -120mV, from there falling fast, with a small chance of failures, which might not show themself in an app crash or prime95 fail calculation. I ran -125mV a long time, had no crashes, stable prime95, but then sometimes some "glitches" mostly in Chrome or Firefox, like a video crashes into black and reloads, or even a restart of the GPU driver maybe once per month or even less.

Sadly it's totally cpu dependent. My current Vostro 7590's i7-9750H is stable at -165mv where my last Aero 15 would only do -95mv. You just have to test it to find out where you'll end up.

    New: Dell XPS 15 7590 System BIOS v 1.7.0

    https://www.dell.com/support/home/e...r&oscode=wt64a&productcode=xps-15-7590-laptop

New v1.7.0 BIOS posted today, marked as "urgent"

    Fixes & Enhancements
    Fixes:
    - Firmware updates to address CVE-2020-5363.

    Enhancements:
    - Updated the Embedded Controller Engine firmware.

If you undervolt, use caution. It's not clear what impact this new version will have on your ability to undervolt or if the previous "reset defaults' or EFI register workarounds are still effective.

Anyone know what CVE-2020-5363 is? I cant find anything about it, so it seems to be under disclosure and therefore critical.

    https://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2020-5363

"This candidate has been reserved by an organization or individual that will use it when announcing a new security problem. When the candidate has been publicized, the details for this candidate will be provided."

Awesome. Might be something exclusive to Dell laptops maybe?
