Thanks for the tip, is "Toshiba XG4 non-SED Solid State Drive" the bad one ?![]()

Is there a good alternative to Dell Premier Color to tweak the color profile of the screen? I've found that installing the software after a fresh install causes blue screens related to the video drivers.

Is anybody else suffering from occasional screen flicker? I have the 4k 32GB RAM model - I disabled the touchscreen setting via the BIOS immediately after the laptop arrived and I did a clean install.
Every now and then the screen will momentarily flash black (for maybe 0.25 - 0.5 seconds) and then go back to normal. Sometimes it'll flicker slightly before coming back - also there is sometimes some graphic black and white stripes/corruption (kind of looks like a barcode effect) at the same time.
I've updated to the newer Intel Graphics drivers (which fixed the Chrome lag for me - i.e. version 4590) but I still get the issue. I have also tried disabling Chrome from running in the background and using Opera instead. But the issue still remains. Some Googling revealed that others had the same issue with the 9550 and a setting on the Dell Wireless drivers fixed it. I wouldn't be all that surprised if the Killer drivers were causing an issue - but unfortunately it does not have the same setting as the Dell Wireless drivers. I have also seen mention of disabling Hyper-v. Although I have Windows 10 Home (no Hyper-v), I've tried disabling the two Virtualisation settings in the BIOS but I'm still suffering from the issue.
I should add that it does not appear to be a mechanical issue. Moving the screen or tiling the laptop does not cause/replicate the issue. Instead, it'll happen randomly when the laptop is perfectly still.
It can go hours/days without the issue appearing and then suddenly I'll have two or three instances of it within an hour.
If anybody else has encountered the same issue and knows a fix then I'd be very grateful. -

She said they are shipping me the PM961 and then i have to call again and they'll send an engineer to replace it, i guess they want their Toshiba SSD back -
My fans are spinning at 2500rpm at idle...anybody experience this? does the 9560 run that hot that it needs fans at idle?
-
Ok I managed to pull up the service tag from the packing slip and get this info.
SSDR, 256G, P34, 80S3, TECHNICAL SHEET, XG4
PLATE, THERMAL, M.2 PCI, 1.5, 5510/9550
Does this mean I got the Toshiba SSD? -

I ordered the third xps 9560, hope it's the last one. I bought the 4k version, i really want to try that panel...(i'm also looking at lenovo yoga 720, same specs as xps with (maybe) better keyboard, audio and build quality)

Hello, I have returned my xps due to a discoloration of the 4K screen. Magenta on the left and yellow on the right. I contacted the technical service and they told me that they could not change the screen because I would have the same problem with another 4K screen. Also, I have an important REDSHIFT, a latency with the track pad and a keyboard that makes double strikes. I think Dell's QC is missing. Innaceptable for a computer about 2K.

Anyone notice a performance improvement with Intel Speed Shift enabled?

Top performance would be best keeping the CPU running flat-out but that is not possible on the XPS and many other laptops due to BIOS settings we can not access (probably Dell trying to control thermals). SpeedShift lets one get around some of the artificial "Dell XPS BIOS limitations" of typical performance tweaks like disabling c-states or disabling SpeedStep (e.g. Turbo speeds become disabled).
Best performance I get from the 9550 is with SpeedShift=0, turbo enabled, and C-1E states disabled (via ThrottleStop).
To be clear, above tweaks helps me reduce latency in a real-time, huge virtual instrument program (40GB) by >50% so it makes a huge difference in applications that push the CPU (well whole system) towards limits in a periodic fashion (e.g. accessing, processing, outputting large sounds on-demand as quickly as possible).
- My LatencyMon results changed from terrible to very good (see DPC latency thread for picture of my typical latency and compare to your system).
- SpeedShift may make no noticable difference for daily use, some benchmarks, some games.
- But as a bonus, I can get max battery life simply changing SpeedShift=255 so it is convenient.
AnandTech did some SpeedShift benchmarking showing performance gains typically below 5% but above 20% for a few applications. Due to the artificial "Dell XPS BIOS limitations", I think we may have a bit more upside potential with SpeedShift.

I don't see any downside with SpeedShift other than fact Dell has not enabled it in BIOS.
See above thread to get around that...aBs0lut3z33r0 likes this. -
New Nvidia driver out. Mentions specifically some users of the GTX 1050 and 1050ti experiencing BSOD's and fixing that... I've had a few when switching off from plugged in to battery... will attempt to install tonight but this might be a good fix.

Upon testing the laptop I realised that it is not up to the expected quality.
Here are the issues I found:
1) screen has a white faded area, near the top middle area, when displaying dark scenes, looks damaged
2) there is coil wine, sometimes it is silent, sometimes it is loud
3) the left side of the screen is cooler that the right side
4) they did not ship the product with 1x16GB as promised but 2x8GB
5) the SSD is a Toshiba one instead of Samsung (half the speed)
Therefore, I have decided to return the product for a full refund. Too many problems for the price tag. I have initiated the return process online already.
Maybe next time, I'll be luckierLast edited: Mar 9, 2017 -
And the SSD thing has to stop people... there is not one place on their website that states what SSD you get or what speeds it might potentially be running at. Nobody does this, because it would be stupid to do so.. you'd need to go to a bespoke builder where you actually SEE what you're ordering and putting into it. I didn't get that option on the Dell website. Did anyone else?! Nope, didn't think so.....custom90gt likes this. -

Is this the FHD or the 4k screen? Asking as i saw it mention on reddit that some people were able to fix the black light bleeding by themselves for the FHD models which was caused by alignment issues

And yes, they promised that. See below from our chat session:
02/28/2017 11:09:25AM Me: "**okay, so does it come with 1x16GB chip and there is a socket to install another one that I buy separately to go up to 32GB? Because I would NOT want it to come with 2x8GB and then have to replace both**"
02/28/2017 11:09:58AM Agent (DELL): "It will come with 1x16GB"
02/28/2017 11:10:16AM Me: "that is perfect" -
-
Else if it is not worth the hassle, then a total replacement or return for refund are the other options on the table. -
The screen issues are serious and yes they could replace it. However, there is still the coil whine issue, which can get irritating after long periods.
Too much hassle for the price. So I will just return it for a full refund. -
Hi all,
So this is my story. I live in Romania where the new XPS 9560 is not available yet. And when it will come, I`m pretty sure that it will be way more expensive than in the USA.
So I asked a fiend of mine that lives in Michigan to order a laptop for me. He placed the order somewhere in the middle of February and got a good deal on a i7/16 GB/UHD/1 TB configuration - 2080 $ including taxes. He received it at the beginning of March and the first thing I asked him to do was to check the SSD. Yup, I had a Toshiba.
Lets get this clear: considering that Im a video producer, the SSD speed is crucial for me. When I drag the footage in Adobe Premiere, I would like that my computer to be blistering fast. So after seeing that others got the Samsung SSD, I just can`t accept that I, who really needs those speeds, will just have to live with a considerably slower Toshiba SSD.
So I asked my friend to call Dell Support and ask for a replacement for the hard drive or for the whole laptop. First they offered him 100 $ in compensation to keep it like it is. He said now and insisted, so the operator agreed to send a replacement. The problem is that the guy did not guaranteed that the new unit will have a Samsung SSD. And after a few day, when my friend checked his email, he saw that the replacement will have the same Toshiba SSD. So he called the support again, canceled the shipping of the new one, and asked just for a SSD replacement. Unfortunately, Dell said this time that there are only Toshiba SSDs left, so he cant help with this problem. So what the hell I`m gonna do now?
I could call again and ask for a compensation, but it feels like a compromise. Or I could just return the laptop, but there are no other options for me. I studied the market in the last 3 months and I`m sure that the XPS 15 is the best laptop for my needs.
So guys, please tell my if any of you have the same problem and how are things going for you. I would highly appreciate if you would help me to get a better SSD and keep my dream machine.
PS: I talked with my friend to make a skype call (not on the XPS of course) and check the laptop for issues, but after this SSD obsession, I postponed this ideea. It will be (not so) fuuny to find out later that the unit has other defects. Or worse, to receive the laptop in Romania and see that there are bad pixels, crappy speakers or that the jack or the USB-C is not working. And already ordered some accessories.
PPS: Sorry for my English. . -

Tried Dell Premier Color again with the newest NVIDIA drivers and getting blue screens. What the hell man. I'm getting sick of this.
-
I'm done. Cant get anything to pair wit the bluetooth anymore.

In the meantime, install Premier Color, choose the profile you like and then uninstall. It'll keep the profiles that were added.
Premier Color is a third party app and it does some odd 'on the fly' profile switching which i think is annoying the slightly more delicate setup of having two GPUs in a machine that dynamically switch. -

Sorry to hear you have issues, this is kinda scary, paying so much for such defects... -
I can handle driver discrepancies as i've used computers before and this is what happens, especially in the PC market with so many variables.
And this machine is pretty new tech, so we have to bend with Nvidia, Intel etc and hope they get their new tech running sturdy.
This isn't all about Dell y'know... -

If the SSD is that important to you, why not just order a cheaper configuration and then upgrade the parts you want to be top of the line? You could save $500 and still get a UHD (and an i7 if you get another 10%+ discount) and then just exchange to a hand selected SSD without burning too much money relative to what you paid. I understand not wanting to deal with hardware upgrades and selling the smaller SSD it'd come with but if it is that important to you it should be a solid option.Last edited: Mar 10, 2017aBs0lut3z33r0 likes this. -
Greetings all,
It's glad to be back in the XPS mix. I do recognized some of yall from when I had both of my 4K 9950's...
I've just received my 2x 9560's, both 7700HQ's with one being 4K and the other being 1080p...
Upon receiving them I didn't even bother turning them on, instead dove right in and swapped out the stock killer wifi for an Intel 8260, swapped the RAM to 32GB and the SSD to my Samsung 960 Pro.
Next a fresh install on the 4K XPS...next I'll do the 1080p XPS...
Just finished repasting and just am now just running some tests....looking great so far...improwise, pressing, Eason and 1 other person like this. -
