After over a week of use have validated that my 9560 doesn't have any of the major issues common in this thread. Have a 960Pro and 32 GB of HyperX Impact ready to go in and some MX-4 and thermal pads on the way. Will put together a Windows ISO with necessary drivers this weekend. Upgrade the memory and test then upgrade the hard drive and clean install and finally repaste and add thermal pads based on iunlock's recommendations.
-
hey all, new to the thread. i bought a 16/512GB with 4k from Dell on sunday and am excited to get it in. just hoping for no hardware issues.. will likely do a clean install. does anyone have a link (to either this forum or a youtube video) that they recommend for the clean install?
also, any recommendations for which thermal paste and pads to buy? thanks in advance! -
Should i accept this? Im mindful i didn't pay for a repaired laptop and opening a laptop in someone's home doesn't seem wise ( dust\static) -
Any 9650 owners with FHD display out there, how is the screen compared to the 9550? Is it using a different panel? I have the 9550, and dislike the yellow tint/hue in the dark ( here).
-
In fact this guy has a ton of videos have a look through, there is some helpful stuff there like the setting up video where he shows you some ways to check the laptop before you start it up etc.
-
-
Also I have a new UK ISO up (1st link in my sig)
And a guide if you click the 2nd link for the 9550 but totally relevant to the 9560 with the correct drivers.
Pads, you don't need any the ones it came with work fine but a few members are on a mission to change everything and halfords up the internals with tape and pads galore in the temp thread.

Is $1960 a good price for the i7 16gb 1tb UHD configuration before taxes and additional warranties?
How do you check that the order will have the Samsung SSD? Is there anything else you should be checking on during the pending order/shipment phase? -

Yea, I saw that but it's an in store pickup in a place I don't live and I ordered a 9569
So is it a good price for the 9560 with those specs?

Thanks all! I've read through all 122 pages of this thread and have picked up some interesting tidbits along the way - many questions answered. Will report back when it arrives, should be before next Friday!

Anyone able to find a privacy screen for the 9560?

I gave up on trying to get Dell to price match MicroCenter and simply cancelled my order (which they graciously did without charging me anything -- or at least what they said). I went to MC and picked up the $1600 version which I can confirm comes with the fingerprint scanner (despite not mentioning this anywhere in the specs)... but in my case, the SSD is the LiteOn CX2-8B512-Q11 and not the Samsung. Oh well, I was going to eventually upgrade it to a 1TB drive in any case. Here are some first impressions:
1) The 4K display is really nice. I know all of the reviews said it, but it does not disappoint. The one and only issue with it is that it is glossy and thus works well as a mirror when black, but this is not very noticeable in most circumstances. It seems to work well as a touch screen, but I'm not used to using laptop displays as such. My only complaint is that there are a few things which do not scale properly with the DPI settings and given the relatively significant scaling, this is comically obvious (but this is of course not a problem with the display, so much as with Windows).
2) I've tested all of the ports except the SD card one and the Thunderbolt one (I've got nothing to plug into either). Everything works, but the left-hand side USB 3.0 is a bit too close to the power input for my liking. It's fine for charging a cell phone, but a large thumbdrive probably won't fit (will try later).
3) The touchpad is fine -- maybe I'm not skilled at detecting problems because I switched to a mouse once it was possible, but I have not noticed the issues observed by others in this thread thus far (knock on wood). The keyboard is also fine... but unlike my last laptop (which I had for 6 years), it has no numpad and thus is centered rather than offset to the left. The result is that I currently cannot type without looking at the keys -- hopefully my muscles will adjust soon.
4) The machine is really quiet. Most of the time, the fan is simply off, but even when it turns on, I can barely hear it over the ambient noises of my house. Without any tweaking, the CPU idles between 50C and 60C. I've managed to get the fans to spin up, but they're still relatively quiet compared to my old HP Pavilion.
I haven't done any stress testing, undervolting, gaming or driver updates yet, but so far, I like this machine a lot (again knock on wood). I highly recommend the MicroCenter deal: the $1600 version is basically the $1750 one from Dell's site plus the $300 screen upgrade and the $25 fingerprint scanner. That comes out to $2075 and even with the 12% discount it's $225 more expensive (in New York, the difference is more like $250 once you add tax). The only drawback is that the MC clerk kept trying to sell me an antivirus and an extended warranty, but hey, they've got to make money somehow. -
Glad it worked out for you though! -

I don't think 72WHr is enough for 4k.
Edit:.
Found the service manual: http://pcsupport.lenovo.com/th/en/p...ooks/yoga-series/yoga-720-15ikb/documentation
SSD and RAM are replaceable! However, the DIMM is only a single slot (thus the max of 16 GB)Last edited: Mar 17, 2017thefiverivers likes this. -

I was flicking through the BIOS and noticed that Dell are setting fastboot to to check everything meaning POST is extended, setting this to minimal and from pressing the power button to desktop now takes under 10 seconds, about 7 at the last count.

Thanks guys. I think I was jumping the gun but I was hoping to find out before it shipped so I could cancel without having to deal with a return but it sounds like that isn't possible since you don't get a service tag and those details until after it's shipped?
On a totally unrelated note, do you think a 14" or 15" sleeve/case is more suitable? Any strong recommendations? I'd be partial to something that has a shoulder strap since I'd use it more for travel. As of now, I'm leaning toward this: https://www.amazon.com/Inateck-Shou...coding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=Q5Z64T3YD279FR4FGFTK
It's an Inateck shoulder bag but I can't decide which size would be better. Is it better that it is super snug or that it has some room to breath so other things, like cables, can fit more comfortably? Any other suggestions altogether? -

13.3 should fit:
"Broadly Fitted: Internal dimensions: 14.3" x 9.6" x 1"; External dimensions: 14.7" x 10.2" x 1.2"."
XPS 15: Height: 0.45 – 0.66" (11-17mm) | Width: 14.06" (357mm) | Depth: 9.27"
I got the 13.3 Procase: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016Z3EHN6/ref=twister_B01KSJNWFC?_encoding=UTF8&th=1 and it fits the laptop great! -
Newbie question. Apologies if this has been answered, as I couldn't quite go through all 120+ pages.
Can we use a Microsoft surface Pen or any other Windows pen with our touch screen on the Dell XPS 15 (9560)? Since it's not a convertible 2-in-1, I realize the use cases are not that often, but as an avid user of the S-pen, it'd be nice to be able to scribble on the gorgeous touch screen for a quick jot - especially with OneNote.
Please let me know if any you have tried using a pen and whether it works on our touchscreen. Thanks! -
-
Thanks for the reply! I too love using the S-pen with my Galaxy Note 5 & 10.1 to jot things down .... a pity nothing similar is available for our Dell XPS 15s.
I was hoping Dell's Active Pen (for the XPS 13 2-in-1) may be compatible, but I guess not. Please let me know if anyone else knows otherwise. -

What's the best way to cast to a TV as a second monitor wirelessly with the killer wifi?
-
Has anyone else noticed a weird thing with the intel graphics settings?
The colour gamut slider seems to show the same if set to natural colors or full vivid colours. Only the settings in between seem to look different.
Also, the screen looks way better if contrast is set to minimum.(40) -
Has anyone else experienced issues with screen flickering? Also, how do I search posts in this thread specifically lol.
-
flicker tends to be the intel video drivers, good results putting the latest intel non beta on manually but on this install (may not happen to everyone) I had to disable driver updated for the hardware ID of the intel video as Microsoft kept putting the Dell driver back on.aBs0lut3z33r0 likes this. -
Do you also experience that after resuming from standby (and probably boot as well) the WiFi in the XPS15 takes forever to reconnect to its wifi? have several other laptops and they are usually connected by the time I have even typed in the password or used the fingerprint reader so it shouldn't be the networks fault.
-
The newest chrome update seems to fix the laggy scrolling. seems to be on-par with Edge now.
Install the Touchpadswipe extension and 2 finger forward/backward nav works well too.aBs0lut3z33r0 likes this. -
Where can I buy the 97Whr battery? I want to put it in my 9550.

1.All my problems related to the performance of Seagate SSHD resolved on forcing the 4590 intel driver . Windows update downgraded it to older version . The SSHD is performing like expected. The old intel display driver brought my SSHD to knees. It was on 100% utilization even when few mbs of data was read or written
2.The lag while opening file explorer was caused my nvidia control panel settings. Ideally the speed of opening file explorer via "This PC" and launching file explorer directly should be the same . There also a huge lag when right clicking a installed exe file .This can be solved by unchecking "Add Run with nvidia graphics processor to the context menu " from the nvidia control panel .
3.Most problems with the killer driver can be solved by uninstalling it from the control panel . It uninstalls only the performance suite . The performance suite is a major problem . With the performance suite i was getting problems with torrent. The killer needs more testing

^I have disabled win10 driver updates through O&O shut up on win10 pro. It's a must have for windows 10. Haven't tried on win 10 home.

It's quite amusing using a BenQ W1210ST gaming projector using screen mirroring to show the panel latency!
As good as the projector is I am paranoid setting it up with a 2 year old running riot so it's going up for sale as I will never use it
