I definitely have coil whine. If I hook up my speakers it is amplified over the speakers. I contacted dell on Monday and they they are sending a tech today to replace the motherboard and power supply. Should I also request a replacement instead or should I wait for the tech to do his thing first?

Depends, do you really want a brand new laptop totally dismantled and a possible refurb part put in. They can't guarantee new parts, even if they do the tech is lying, policy dictates they can use refurna and they cannot answer when put on the spot.
This is always my basis during the returns period and beyond.

I'm not a native english speaker but I believe you meant dirt? My XPS is just few days old so I think that is unlikely. Not sure if I had described it correctly but I bumped into a similar comment on Reddit although it is a 9550 instead:

"My keyboard is almost perfect (xps 15 9550). But the one small problem is the backspace, tab, and right shift buttons have a clicky sound to it. If you gently tap on the keys without pressing on them, it sounds gives sounds like it is loose. i dont know if I described it correctly. Otherwise there are no defects or troubles."

Sounds like a normal thing to have? o_O

Best to phone Dell if you are not happy. Pulling a keycap can damage the tabs, I took the risk on my last one to lubricate the squeak with graphite powder but your fault I have had but just now and again when things are not lined up. pressing it the once fixes it for me.

You don´t have to disable SpeedStep as it will be inactive as long as SpeedShift is enabled.

Right, you just check the box to enable SpeedShift and SpeedStep will be ignored. Just try, there`s nothing you can do wrong with Throttlestop.

:D Thanks for your reminder to your sticky ;) I just looked at the Picture and thought wtf!!! I for myself could´t be happier (ok, Thunderbolt at full speed, hmm...) with my 9560. Nothing to complain regarding build quality. What I really like is that my fans barely turn on in daily use, even on AC. I read you just ordered yours and wonder what you will say :).

Leave it at this and watch the behaviour of your machine. If you get a little used to it, read the SpeedShift thread by pressing to ticker around with the settings. But 128 is a good value to start with.

Hello there, received my xps one week ago and I have two questions..
What about "dell" power option? I found this option on the battery options menu. Is it somehow adaptable? I mean does it give full power if plugged in and good compromise (like balance) if unplugged?

And a bonus question, not so inherent.. I have bought Microsoft wireless adapter v2 which works fine, no lag when streaming Netflix or YouTube from pc but I found it a bit laggy with vlc.. Anyone? Is it player related?

Just leave it on balanced, all Dell has done is stick Dell onto microsoft power plans so if you need to know more google "windows power plans"

As for the other issue, afraid that is also a Microsoft problem, or a VLC problem, almost guaranteed not to be a Dell problem so best to start with the former.

Follow GoNz0's recommendation to use "Balanced" profile as it seems fine for everyday use.

FYI - For advanced users looking to tweak their systems, one can also check to see if "Dell Command-Power Manager" is installed. The "thermal management" tab allows some additional tweaking if one wants "ultra performance" wants "quiet" fans.

Probably going to pick up a 84wh 9550 battery after I get my 9560. Drop in my m.2 drive, repaste with CLP, among other things till its just right and walla...should be good to go. Looking forward to seeing some GPU overclocks...

Hopefully presidents day sales are favorable.

Don't expect overclocking of the GPU here as it was never really spoken about on the 9550 due to it's already stretched thermal limitations, also why get a 9550 battery? do you have the 56Whr on yours?

In games I didn't notice much of a difference, though it feels a little sharper if you set the resolution to 4k and the render scale to 50%. Could just be my imagination though.
In windows it's terrible. Videos were okay, too.

First I want to say thanks to everyone on this forum who have posted about the previous and current XPS 15, gave me a lot of information to digest before my laptop arrived. I have had it for a few days and I just wanted to share some positive things about it.

My laptop has the FHD screen, 8GB ram, 256GB SSD, 56Whr

-FHD screen: This thing is gorgeous, the best laptop screen I have ever used. Text is really sharp, nice colours and get really bright, too bright personally. I love that the screen matte, the 4K would have been nice but my experience with highly reflective screens has not be a positive one. Ghosting is not that bad but it is there. I think of myself as a person that is fairly sensitive to ghosting as it gives me headaches and have returned several TVs in the past because of it. I installed fallout 4 and the ghosting is there but only if I am looking for. During regular game play I don't notice it and can game without any headaches. Only thing I wish about the screen is that the brightness could go lower, in a dark room the lowest setting is still too bright. It does 2-ish dead pixels off to the right of the screen which can only be seen when the screen is at full brightness and on a black screen. I will never use the laptop under those conditions so they don't bother me. As long as they aren't a sign that the screen could fail prematurely I don't think I will return it but I any see if I can get a discount from dell.

-speakers: They are super loud but fairly hollow. I am not an audiophile but it would be nice if they were more robust. There is an equalizer in the software and once I figure out what I should change I will see if it makes a difference. I have noticed no crackling when adjusting the brightness or using headphones. I do hate that it asks me what I plugged in all the time. I will have to see if I can set headphones as the default.

-Battery life: So far it seems that I can expect to see about 5-6 hours just doing web browsing type tasks. I have under volted it using the intel XTU software and I hope it helps a bit. It does help with idle temps as it seems to settle down in and around 39c.

-Wifi: I have seen a lot of posts about the killer wifi installed being crap but so far that has not been my experience. I have an asus RT-N66U router at home, I have no tried it with another other routers yet. I have copied over several disc images from my NAS to get it setup for school and it transfers at about 26Mbps and I had no wifi drop outs. I don't know if that is super fast for wireless but it sure is that fastest I have ever transferred something over wifi by a wide margin.

-coil whine: the laptop is dead silent, in a quite room I hear nothing on battery power or while it is charging. I also may not be the best choice to test this as I have lost some of my high frequency hearing from my time in the military. My girlfriend says that when charging there is a very slight whine but the room has to be silent and you have to have your ear right on the laptop to hear it.

I am super happy with the laptop, the worst things in this whole experience so far have been Dell's website and Windows 10. I may try to put windows 8.1 on it if windows 10 keeps pissing me off, I am the odd person who didn't mind windows 8 after all the UI changes were made and I dont like all the changes Microsoft made to windows 10 that can't be controlled.

Dell's website is terrible, it wasn't until my laptop shipped that I read that you could click next to see more laptop configurations. I really wanted the 97WHr battery and 16GB of ram, figured I would upgrade them later because the only systems that had that also have the 4K screen and I didnt want the 4K screen. I tried to call Dell about ordering the battery and they say its not in stock and have no idea if it will ever be, useless.

That leads me to a question, I have read a lot about the batteries from the 9550 and the 9560 as well as seeing how similar they are. Since I cant seem to get my hands on the 97WHr from dell I am considering getting a 84WHr battery since they are fairly cheap but I have not read about anyone have success installing a battery from one model into the other. Anyone know for sure if this swap would work? If no one has tried I may just bite the bullet and see if it will work.

Got mine today and everything is working well with no defects.

Temperature seemed higher than I last remembered with my 9550, but they are excellent now with a repaste using Gelid GC-Extreme, a -150mv undervolt, and Turbo Boost turned off.

Coming from the latest Macbook Pro, I can definitely feel the downgrade in speakers, keyboard, and touchpad. Sadly, my wallet couldn't justify such an expensive note-taking machine, but at half the price, I'm very happy with this latest XPS.

Has anyone been successful in ordering the 97WHr battery?

Ditto that! 84wh 9550 batteries on ebay are darn cheap right now...

no gpu overclocking? hmm.. is that VRM related or due to high temps of the GPU in general? That'd be pretty disappointing having no ability to overclock the GPU even after liquid metal repasting. At least the memory should overclock decent... if the memory runs the same voltages as the desktop variant you should be able to get 8GHz memory...

If you check your temperatures, you can conclusively rule out (or confirm) thermal throttling.

As I seem to say an awful lot. This is an ultrabook with the thermals pushed to the limits so it can't cope with the stock speeds without throttling so why would anyone want to overclock it?

Aida64 can monitor temps, or for free MSI afterburner should also work (not tested myself) that has power limit monitoring.

I've noticed that my machine will become very unresponsive after leaving it idle for a while, say an hour or so. It freezes intermittently when I'm switching windows/tabs, or even just typing on this post. The 'System' process in the task manager shows 20~30% of CPU usage when such behavior takes place. Although it would go away after restart but it doesn't seems right at all, does anyone know the reason behind this?

It's most likely Windows housekeeping at work when it thinks the computer is idle and should eventually stop when it thinks everything is done.

What John said, seems to be nromal on a new system for the 1st few days.
Need a chart of temps and clock speeds to see what is going on, that system has probably throttled as the fans are flat out.
Open the system stability test from the tools menu but don't run it, let it monitor temps and clocks for a while then take pics of the tabs.

Hey I'm getting system freezes and lock ups(hard reboot is needed) on my 9560. It seems to be gtx 1050 related. Temps fine... always around 60. Have done a clean Nvidia driver install and hopefully it's fixed. I noticed Dell has removed the Nvidia driver from support page... might be buggy.

Does Dell do sales on these? I'm looking at their Presidents Day sale and it's $250 off of the $2200 version which is very close to the usual 10%.

Sorry fella, you need to do it again, this time click preferences on clocks, remove the CPU clocks except for one, add the GPU clock (I forgot it sin't shown by default, do the same under voltages, temps and fans. You may need to nvidia GPU running to enable the options. ALso it is worth adjusting the slider to see more of what is happening rather than leaving the default slider as it can compress info.

If it comes back update the storage controller driver with the one for your SSD, might be worth walking away for 10 minutes when it locks up on the off chance it does BSOD :)

Sorry m8 but that is a daft question, Dell always do sales, you have to wait for the right one for you ;)

Live chat will do a 10% off in most cases if you want to haggle.

Sorry, perhaps I wasn't clear. What I meant was that there is almost always a sale of roughly 10% in one way or another so I was hoping for a more substantial one due to the holiday (i.e. 20% or more).

I've tried twice now to get a 10% discount into a 15% discount and twice I've been denied by dell chat. Maybe calling you might have better luck? I'm waiting on my i5 version to drop with the $150 off...Soooo hoping it'll get to $150 off and not $100 off. If that's the case I'll buy it right away. That'll get my discount to $225 off. Not too shabby.

1.Does dell charge the credit card after the laptop has been shipped. My order has been confirmed but they have not charged my card yet.

    2. Which one is the most recommended dock : - D3100 (USB3.0) , WD15(Type-C) or TB15 ? I need to connect one Full HD HDMI monitor/DP Monitor (1 at a time) and a couple of USB devices.I guess TB15 is the most problematic dock and has been recalled. TB16 is too costly. Has anyone tested D3100 with the new Dell XPS 15? Is there any difference between USB3 docks and type-c docks with respect to CPU power consumption?

3.Which is the recommended RAM upgrade option? Anyone tested Kingston HyperX ? Are SK Hynix RAM DDR2400 RAM CL17?

    -Kingston Hyper X CL14
    -Corsair Vengeance CL16
    -Micron Ballistix Sport LT CL16
    -Crucial CL17

Received my XPS 9560 yesterday. No coil whine or any other major problems as far as I can tell, but I'm having some problems with the fans turning on the second I connect it to the Dell WD15 docking station (USB type C charger, 180W). Is that normal behavior? It'll turn on the fans even if it's idling at 30-35C when connected. Also battery is fully charged.

Running on top of a clean install, so haven't really installed anything else besides the Intel Chipset+WiFi drivers (using Intel 8265) and Nvidia GPU drivers.

I also did a repaste which yielded good results (usually stays @70C, prime 95, undervolt CPU=145mv+iGPU=120mv): http://imgur.com/a/mYbQp

Also enabled speed shift via the BIOS mod and set EPP to ~90 :

It takes quite a while for the fan to kick in while running on batter. Using the "default" balanced mode - only thing I changed was to set cooling from "active" to "passive" while connected to AC/charger.

    Need some help pls guys...

My USB 3.0 stick keeps disconnecting randomly from either of the 2 ports on the laptop. Have googled everything. Searched through this site and thread.

Nothing that I can think of that I'm not doing.

Have updated bios and drivers from Dell's site, changed power usage preferences, made sure USB power enabled options are all taken care of....

Any other hints? Seems the problem happens less often if my screen is set to 100% brightness.

    Thanks guys

I vaguely recall a couple of posts but not many with 9560 ram upgrades; do a search here. If you find nothing, the RAM that works on the 9550 has a decent probability of working on the 9560. Just remember that the 9550 is a 2133mhz and 9560 is 2400mhz.

The HyperX 32GB 2400mhz work fine in my 9550. Based on the 9550 posts here it seemed to work for most users who purchased it. It also had the lowest cas latency of popular modules, if that matters much in a designer laptop...
