It should also be noted that Visual Studio 2017 is a disaster in many ways, especially when it comes to performance. Thats not to say that the XPS does not have its own share of problems...

After clean install of Spring Creators Update,BIOS update to 1.9.4 and all new drivers (incl. samsung nvme v3 etc) package no longer enters deeper states than C3. I have enabled lowest AHCI power savings and no difference (before it helped me with this issue). Do you have any ideas what I can try to do?

TB16 isn't bad at all. Most complaints come from the fan that turns on once in a while, and it honestly isn't even that loud of a fan. The only 'issue' I have with the TB16 is that the cable is one the wrong side (TB3 port of laptop is on the left side, TB3 cable comes out of the left side of the dock). Whoever designed that should be shot.

Get the TB16. It connects way more periferals, charges your laptop with 130W and is a decent looking device.

The TB16 is ok, MUCH better than the TB15 fiasco but still room for improvements. Especielly the fan can be irritating, as it makes an irritating buzz-sound which changes in frequency quite often. I guess that perhaps MrBuzzkill might have a solution for that though :D

Some irritation during connect/disconnect but I guess that might be a TB3 problem more than a TB16 problem.

I understand the TB16 is extremely close to the TB15 plus a fan, because overheating couldn't be fixed with a firmware update ;) Much of the issues that plagues the initial year of the TB15 were due to TB3 being pushed to market way before it was functional. I recall some made TB15 work by installing fans themselves, maybe also using passive heatsinks.

Surely one can try sticking small heatsinks on all chips. A FLIR might show which are most in need (using a finger is probably safe considering the voltage is 20V).

I'm curious if TB3 docks of other brands in form of smaller bricks happen to to do the same job with passive cooling? I've noticed there's quite a bit of competition by now.

And considering the non-portable form factor one might also look at GPU enclosures.

Package c-states no longer go deeper than C3 on my 9550 either. I got them pretty deep (C7?) a few months back. Here are some clues that might help you:

    - I have not updated Windows 10 Pro to Spring Creators Update. Auto updates are enabled and I am on 1709 build 16299.431.

    - I have updated BIOS, Intel ME SpyEngine, and Intel GPU drivers. Pretty sure I did not update any other drivers.

    - Several months ago, I uninstalled all nVidia drivers & software via DDU, so that is unlikely the issue, at least for the 9550.

Actually it turned out if I let it sit for a little longer C8 starts to show up...might be some thing with the throttlestop? The new version which uses different compiler also takes long to load on the first start...

I have VS2017 community and enterprise installed on my XPS 9560 and it runs flawlessly. Also runs fine on my desktop.

Have nothing bad to say about performance of VS2017 on 9560 16Gb RAM, it run just OK even for solutions of 30+ projects. Of course we should take into account amount of data it have to preprocess during startup just to provide you best-in-class development experience.

Well, just Google "Visual Studio 2017 performance" and it will be obvious. Thats not to say everyone is affected though, any kind of GUI development seem to be worst hit. On the plus side, that is the main reason I am telling myself I need a 9570 even though having a topspeced 9560 :D

My XPS is acting weird. I bought these over at ebay and the condition was excellent. I bought the 4k variant. I did a clean install. I then connected the laptop via HDMI and started to watch a movie. I finished the whole movie and when I played another one, it started to act weird, it freezes a lot and I noticed that the laptop was a bit hot. Any of you guys experience this?

It seems like I need to turn off or let the laptop rest for a while before I can watch another movie.

Check your temperatures with HWInfo64 or HWMonitor. Your laptop shouldn't overheat while watching a movie.

Guessing that it might be related to the nVidia GPU as that is activated when using the HDMI if I am not mistaken.

Well, the only time I had lags when playing a movie through HDMI or USB C.... I solved the problem by starting the movie after connecting to the external display.
Previously, I would start the movie before connecting to the external display and that would somehow make playback laggy and the whole laptop would just have a mind of its own LOL.
See if you have similar issues

Can you try enabling the 1050 for whatever program you are using to decode the video? Perhaps the bitrate is so high the intel GPU has problems with it.

I already made sure that Media Player classic uses the Nvidia 1050 to decode video. Not sure if what setting to do in VLC though.

I am having problem with my TB16 dock lately.
Windows freezes on login or short after login. This never happens when the XPS is not connected to the dock.
I have the latest drivers and Win 10 April update

Its the nvidia driver. I'm using latest Intel driver and nvidia developer geforce driver 397.96 that doesn't have freezes or Optimus based issues.
I used modified setup.cfg from @j95 and just modified the version on development driver 397.96 and removed bloatwares like he mentioned here https://premamod.wordpress.com/2017/08/15/j95-nvidia-inf/
I can give up my nvidia inspector profile backup just in case you want to test. Be sure to use DDU to wipe both Intel and nvidia in safe mode by choosing Clean w/o restart option which is the second option in DDU main window.
    Hope this helps.

This is likely the problem as the Nvidia GTX in laptops do not have NVDEC hardware for decoding video. It can still do it using the CUDA cores but not efficiently. Likely gets very hot.

The intel gpu has circuits for quick sync video support for video decoding. Use it.

I'm using PotPlayer also. It's the most efficient videoplayer on 4k screen.
MPC-HC (which I was using on my previous laptop) and VLC use more battery on 4k display.

Hi, I just wanted to know if someone has experienced any battery issues. I bought the 9560 about 3 months ago and a full charge would last about 7 to 8 hours on light use but now it only lasts about 3 hours and the only difference is that I updated all the computer drivers, even the Nvidia one. Could that be the reason?

The computer has been working fine, the only problem I have is the battery life.

So it's confirmed that the new NVIDIA driver causes serious problems on our XPSes.
New Intel driver is OK though :)

I was having a similar issue. I rolled back my Nvidia Driver to 397.64 but wasn't 100% convinced that this was the problem yet as I'd just opened my 9650 up and replaced the battery. I couldn't rule out the possibility that I'd touched the wrong thing and broken my frickin' laptop! I guess that I still can't, but I am reassured to hear of similar problems and successful fixes. :)

Odd, I didn't have any issues, I am on the 24 series Intel as well if that made a difference?

Only issue I have is the display cache bug since I clean installed 1803 where it locks for a second or two when you close certain folders, windows etc.

    Hi,

after selling my MBP 2016 15 inch hated the keyboard, typing a lot at work on normal keybaords, having a mechanical at hime - yeah it was a bad buy, lost like a 1000€ selling after a year which was actually ok for me. Then I wanted one of these nice 144Hz gaming things, tested some, had an AW 15r4, 13r3 etc. then went for the XPS 13 9370 full soec, which for me, has wayyyyy to much ghosting :/

So I thought ok check the Dell Website, Razer QS and availability in Germany of the 15 inch and so brought me there after I had the GS65 creaky thing at home - went for the 4k full spec 9560 with the big price drop right now.

So I got it for the exact price I bought the 9370 for :D long story

Anyway, where I am right now I am trying to get information, maybe you could help, also reading like 410 pages would take days :D

    - What should I check when I get it ( for not later realizing something that's not ok when it's too late)
    - Does it have a Windows precision trackpad? Without needing drivers a.s.o.?
    - How well does Linux run or it?
    - I got a 1080ti in my desktop, playing lots of games when I got real free time - is the 1050 ok for like playing Forza 7 and pubg at reasinable settings?
    - What is the default scale you are using in Windows /Linux?

I hope I do not bother you with these questions too much, but I finally want a device that is nicely built and actually does what it does nicely :)

Thanks a lot in advance :)

Hey... is there any part of throttlestop that can stop the PL1 throttling of a 800MHz CPU? Have already disabled turbo, resulting in CPU temps of only 60 Deg and the dell EC shows the ambient <75 Deg (should be referring to the VRMs right? under HWINFO) Repasted and undervolted by -126mV already... idk what else i can do besides uninstalling intel DPTF but it always reinstalls itself
