Is this why fresh-install is recommended? to reduce boot time? Kinda missed why fresh install are suggested other than to get rid of all bloatware![]()

Gonna call Dell in exactly 9 hours, next morning, mainly to ask for the discount they ran few days ago.
Do you people think there is any point of mentioning the known issues to see what their response is? Like if they will keep saying "yes yes, we have taken care of that, working on it". And if you can wish for the Samsung ssd?
Sort of a pressure point to throw in to convince them to give me that discount. -
My i9-8950HK is schedule for delivery on 16 july

Has anyone with the 9570 with Dell Mobile Connect driver installed been able to 'cast' anything from the laptop to an Android TV? I normally use my iPad to send NOW TV over to my Sony Bravia as that doen't have the app available on this model, but it would be good to be able to do it from the laptop.

Received my new XPS 15 yesterday ( i7, 16GB, 512SSD, 4K). Everythings fine, except some noise issue i guess, but not 100% sure. When i watch YouTube or using DaVinci or copying some files, then there is a electrical sound near under or around the touchpad and middle of the Keyboard. I only can hear it when i put my head really close to the keyboard (4-5cm). Im not sure if this some coil whine issue or its just normal. The sound comes every 3-4 secs for 2secs.
What you guys think? -
If that sound only occurs when the charger is plugged in then it's most likely coil whine
-
The sound occurs all the Time, plugged and unplugged. Doesnt matter what im doin (YouTube, DaVinci, Copying files) the sound always occurs directly. When im doin nothing, just Desktop, the Machine is absolutely silent of course. But as soon as i Start any Application the sound occurs directly.
I only notice it in absolutely quiet rooms, or when im a directly over the keyboard with my ear.
Im not sure what i should do. Send it back!? Keep it? Im scared that the replaced device could be more worse.
Here is an example:

@karbon I have the exact same noise on mine, also i7, 16GB, 512SSD, 4K, (electric clicking and beeping), so I am totally sure everyone has it (with same specs and SSD), but some people won't hear it (maybe have bad ears, arent in a quiet room, dont use AC, ect). I am still waiting for the bad Dell support to get back to me. I am now over a week on a discussion with them to give me a replacement or repair. I wont ever by through Dell again and just buy laptops through Amazon. They would have had just sent me a new one in 1 day.
Did yours come with a SK Hynix SSD? I read about most of these have terrible coil whine. I also think for 512 they dont use Samsung, just if you order a 1TB you may have chances to get a Samsung actually. I should have just
I am totally sure if you get a replacement, it will have the same issue, if it comes again with a SK Hynix.Last edited: Jul 3, 2018 -
I am considering to buy the XPS 15 (i7, 16gb RAM, 1080 x 1920 full HD screen, 512 gb SSD) but I have some questions. I will be using it to code at university and play some light games.
- Does the full HD version have plastic or glass bezzels and is the screen matt or glossy?
- Is there coil wine on every XPS or is it just a defect for some particular devices?
- Are the thermal issues solved yet? Would I have problems with the thermals when running a heavy IDE like Visual Studio?
- Is there screen bleeding & ghosting on the 1080p version?
Would you guys recommend me to buy the XPS 15 or should I buy something else? -
Crucial/Micron techncal supprt still insist their Ram is compatible with this model and even that with CL 16. I've tried 4 different versions of their Ram now and when using both slots the machine won't boot or allow you to go into BIOS and you get the flashing 3 white/2 amber "No compatible memory installed" in the machine.
Funnily enough doing the original Ram in slot b with replacment Ram in slot a trick works but lowers the clock speed down.
Last time I spoke to support I asked them if they had, or to actually physically try the Ram in this model and they said they hadn't can't as they would have to have every model of laptop to do this. How do they know its compatible then?
I feel Dell have done something to one of the Ram slots that will only use or boot with CL 18 or 19 Ram, and Dell support advised me againt using a 3rd party Ram upgrade as it may lead to a lot of conflicts on the machine later. I hope this doen't stop all the already working models like the G.Skills with future BIOS updates, they should surely make more Ram compatible instead?
Still no Ram upgrades available on their website yet either. -
@Maarten VN
Does the full HD version have plastic or glass bezzels and is the screen matt or glossy?
- plastic and matt
Is there coil wine on every XPS or is it just a defect for some particular devices?
- I am sure every unit has it, some (older) people wont hear it though or arent in a quiet room
Are the thermal issues solved yet? Would I have problems with the thermals when running a heavy IDE like Visual Studio?
- There were none, just if you game maybe and dont have FPS limiter ect
Is there screen bleeding & ghosting on the 1080p version?
- Bleeding yes, ghosting is IPS typical. Though the 4k has way worse ghosting (dont listen to the propaganda of people who say the 4k panel is amazing, it is not).
The 4k panel has so bad ghosting, if you move the mouse cursor over gray background, you can easily see it with the naked eye and have like a 0.5 cm long ghost cursor behind it. It is really bad.
The XPS 15 is a decent laptop, it is not worth to buy for more than $1500 though. It is a ok laptop for a price range up to $1300 maybe. Sadly there are no better or other good laptops in 2018 so far. 2018 is a bad year for laptops. If you can, wait for a XPS 15 9580 maybe in 2019.
For a laptop for a student/university, it is also way to heavy in my opinion. The XPS 13 may be a better one for you, though it cant game obviously.Last edited: Jul 3, 2018 -
If I would order the XPS on the Dell website can I return it and get a refund when it has issues? -
Mine doesn not have any coil whine at all, in a silent room on mains and I'm fussy about noise. On using the SSD drive that came with it (SK Hynix) I can confirm that does, mainly on write. Its not loud but more like a whine, and I'm glad I went and put a Samsung in.
Thermals may be still on going, undervolting does well to address this along with tying down the Turbo boost max speed on 6 cores (in Throttlestop) and possibly repasting if there's a bit difference in core temperatures.
Again, I don't have any screen bleeding or ghosting on my 1080p version.
HTH and there are some excellent guides on here if you do want to make yours cooler.
I'm happy with mine, some others are and some people can't live with it from out of the box with issues but its up to the individual and the price I guess. -
-
Another thing i have noticed: When i watch YouTube 144p-720p zero Coil Whine...absolute quiet. But at 1080p-4k the Coil Whine Starts directly.
Any ideas!? -
-
All these stories make me kind of nervous to receive my 9570 i7, 16GB, 256 SSD.
I'm thinking to cancel before they ship and buy the MSI GS65 instead, even though I received a good deal from Dell.
Dell Canada said if I send back the laptop I'll have to pay a restocking fee and won't be refunded the tax I paid
Hmmm.... -
Like I said... most coil whine come from a Hynix SSD, google about it and you will find lots of reports for it. I am totally sure the mainboard of the 9570 has it too though so it' two sources at least.
Undervolting didnt really do anything to make it quiet for idle and low work. I also couldnt do more than about 80-90mV on mine, more than 100 and it was unstable for apps like Netflix and Chrome, and had crashes.
If you have to flip the SSD and the Wifi card it comes with, then it is totally not a recommendation to buy it.
You could try disabling TurboBoost with ThrottleStop, and also set it to "quiet" in the Dell power tool. That helps a little bit.Last edited: Jul 3, 2018 -
Setting it to Cool on the Dell Power Manager - Thermal Management disables the Turbo but you lose a fair bit of performace doing so.
Doing normal work the machines fine its only when stressing it does it have a problem cooling itself, especially with 6 cores flat out. -
The Hynix could be the Problem, yes.
But what im asking myself: When the SSD is the Problem, why is the Coil Whining louder under High Graphic Performance? DaVinci and YouTube (in HD and 4K only) are producing more Coil Whine than copying files for example.
And when im switching between Tabs in the Browser the is a strange noise for a 1ms... -
-
@karbon Thats why I said, the chances are high yours has two sources of coil whine, SSD and mainboard. I have it too btw. The coil whine from the SSD is a more of a short clicking noise, the other is more higher frequency and I am sure it is the mainboard. The permanent high frequency coil whine comes from the center on my unit, and the SSD is on the side.

Dell Power Manager and Throttlestop doesnt help btw. Same sound like before... -
Out of interest, what make/model of RAM do you have, HWINFO64 can give you the exact make/model or you will probably have another tool you use? -

After reading about all the issues here and my attempt to get in contact with the incredible, awfully, horrible, terrifying customer service of Dell outsourced to some bunker in Afghanistan, I will sadly pass on the XPS 15 :/
It's just too much. In case there would be issues I have 0 support and help. And the problems are there, this thread is proof of it.
Well, good luck and hope you all will be happy with yourscheers

But if you have 0 support where you are located that is understandable so good luck in whatever laptop you buy hope you don't have any problems or that better support is available to you for me I trust the people here to help me resolve an issue not the Dell tech support.custom90gt and Woodking like this. -
I doubt you can find any laptop on these fora that don't have problems reported. This is where people come when they have a problem.
I don't game but can get mine to TjMaxx (97 deg C) in about 40-50 seconds by simply asking Lightroom to search for new photos to add to my catalog. Now I do have 22,000 images that it has to go through but that is getting pretty hot pretty quickly. However that is a relatively unusual situation for my use and I can live with it. However I wouldn't expect to use this laptop for extensive gaming. That is best done on a desktop with a lot of cooling. If you want a laptop for its portability you will have to suffer some compromises over a laptop with top of the line components and cooling. I just built a new PC and it will heat the room up pretty quickly with the heat it generates but given the fans, the case and the space it doesn't throttle. Anything portable will. -
I also have two 8GB MicronTech RAMs and the noises seem to come directly from the center. Could be though, that it's the voltage regulation too, which also sits on the top center. -
Ordered on 6/11 and received on 7/2. i7/8GB/256GB. Replaced SSD (EX920 1TB) and DRAM (CT16G4SFD826 16GB CL19).
DRAM: I mixed the 16GB with one of the 4GB stick to make 20GB total. According to Intel 8GB will be in dual channel mode and 12GB would be in single channel. Running at 2666.
EX920: Read ~2000 MB/s, write ~1700 MB/s. Read performance is lower than that of desktop.
Snapped one of the UF.L connector when replacing the Wifi card. Was able to get the metal piece out of the pigtail with the help of a microscope. Definitely a scary experience. Would not recommend of doing that unless absolutely necessary.
Did a clean install of windows. So far most of things are positive and no major complaint here. Did notice the CPU idle at relatively high temperature and the fan can kick in decently frequent, some people suggest re-pasting, probably later. -

Hi guys!
A lot of message have been posted and it is quite difficult to summerize all this stuff about repaste and thermal pad.
Can someone tell me what is the better choice for thermal improvment (without taking to much risk) : repaste (which paste do you recommand ?) and/or new thermal pad (which one and where to put them ?) and/or undervolt (if so, which software and which set up ?)
Thank you very much for helping !
Have a nice day -

Glad you found some Ram that actually works, and at CL19. I may order that model if it works in both slots, were you able to boot with that Ram module in slot B? (Not the origional Dell stick - the Crucial one) as there's a bit of an issue with aftermarket Ram in both slots and booting. -
-
As @custom90gt 's excellent link shows everything you could possibly need to do or know about repasting, all you need to do is order yourself some Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut thermal paste and some Artic Thermal Pads 50x50x1.5mm of the 6,0 W/mK variety and get 'yer tools out if you feel you need a little bit more improvement.backslashfr likes this. -

Summary:
If I had to rank order what I think is worthwhile here is how I would do it.
1. Undervolt - by far the best
2. Cheap thermal pad between the ram and case bottom - super cheap and easy to do
3. Repaste - a little more advanced but worthwhile, especially in keeping the max temps down
4. iunlock mk5 mod - basically just try to cool some of the VRM near that ambient sensor - only really if you want max performance, but I don't know if the juice was worth the squeeze so to speak on that one.
Please let me know what your questions are about it, I'm happy to help, but not sure what my post is missing.backslashfr likes this. -

Ordered on your positive findings, (and I'm pretty sure this is the CL 19 vs 16 issue). Will report back either way, works/doesnt.

I just used the 2mm and cut the pieces to the length/width of the ram.backslashfr likes this. -
So I am gonna go with step 1 and 2 : undervolt and thermal pad on RAM
I have read both thread (this one and custom90gt's, but a few questions remains...
1)
About throttlestop : is there any risk for my PC (except a few BSOD) ?
I have to try step by step to undervolt it, right ?
I don't have to run it at each rebooting, right ? once undervolt is done, it stay undervolted ?
How do I stress test it ? (which benchmark do I run to be sure it is stable ?)
Which level of undervolt did you reach ?
How will I know if I did bad ?
2)
Unfortunately, your ebay seller does not ship to france, so if I go with this one (maximum 1,5 mm), is it ok ? : https://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B00UYTU6Z6/
So i just cut it precisely (adjusted on RAM size) and put it on the RAM ?
Is there anywhere else that I can put those pad if I have too much ?
Thanks a lot for your advices ! -
