I believe Pressing answered all of your questions about throttle stop. In a nutshell the worst that can happen is some BSODs. I launch TS every time my laptop starts to ensure that it is undervolted (launch with task scheduler). I like to stress test with AIDA64 first as it normally finds issues the quickest and then run Prime95 overnight to see where I stand. My thread talks about where I ended up undervolt wise.

I don't think that 1.5mm thermal pad will reach the bottom of the case. Is there anything else on ebay france that is 2mm thick? And yes, you just cut it to the size you want. No worries about making it perfect size as it's non-conductive and has a lot of give (at least the blue silicon ones).

    Hey guys.
Received a 9570. Is it just me, or are the up and down directional keys ... more spongey than the other keys? Have got a 5520 and 9560 here - the 2 keys feel not good.

Edit: tech will come onsite to replace the keypad. Fingers crossed it won't take too long wait.

finally, got my i7,16GB,256GB (toshiba one), FHD XPS 9570 :) here are some initial thoughts:

Everything as expected. keyboard ok, audio ok, terrible backilght bleeding (I don't really care as long there are no dead pixels :)), fingerprint scanner still works (after two bios updates - currently on 1.2.2)
Don't have issues of laptop turning off under gaming tests load.
First it booted it didn't discovered wifi card in device manager. But after connecting Ethernet cable via docking station, wifi networks appeared.
I have also bought Dell docking station WD15 which works nice for now (after firmware update).
BatteryBar shows less than 2% battery capacity lost (which is ok compared to almost 10% in other units).

Only one thing Im bit upset is random screaming coil whine for half a second. Its not gpu or ssd related. It sometimes occurs then idling on windows desktop or when booting ubuntu from pendrive. I have to decide whether replace my unit or not. (this may be hard to do because i have my unit ordered from us and now im in europe).

Despite that one thing Im happy with that purchase :) I need to change ssd to Samsung 970 evo 1TB and aybe wifi card to intel.

Also noticed the fans comes more frequently than on my work machine - Dell Latitude 5480 with i7 7820hq even in quiet mode. But fingerprint scanner is quicker and more reliable in new xps than this latitude.

And one more thing, rubber feet are gray in 9570 compared to black 9550 and silver aluminum lcd cover is a bit darker in 9550 than in 9570. Subtle differences that not everybody notices ;)

With the i7-8750H and 1050 Ti, is it worth a repaste? (have some spare Gelid Extreme GC3)

Coil whine and backlight bleed aren't exactly technical issues, theses are one of the downsides of the technological processes. In general, if you want a perfect screen then go for OLED, but keep in mind that it is susceptible to burn-in over time, albeit different manufacturers deal with it differently, on the other hand you can get the TN panel, but the colors and viewing angels are not IPS quality. As for coil whine that is also not a thing support can deal with as it does not cause any problems, it's just an annoying "feature" which can be found on a lot of electronic devices, not only laptops.
I have had 3 DELL laptops over the course of about 8-9 years and whenever technical issues really arose, they fixed them. In your case I advise just like other guys, return it and choose another laptop after checking it out yourself, but keep in mind there are no computers without issues and the more forums you read the more find out.
    Good luck!

PS. BSOD and Windows problems should first be verified with a clean OS installation and driver update as they may be connected to outdated software and/or drivers and those are not covered by the warranty as stated in the terms.

PS2. I also have coil whine on an Inspiron 7537 when gaming, but I got used to it and it's OK for me now. Some minor backlight bleed also but I only noticed it after 3 years of use and while playing Hollow Knight at night so as you see, nothing (and nobody) is perfect.

Am I completely OCD or am I just really unlucky with getting laptops with uneven backlighting? I'm talking like 9/10 of laptops I've had lately have unacceptably uneven backlighting.

Pleased to report back that the memory (Crucial CT16G4SFD8266) arrived today, fitted in either slot and it works! Boots fine, just a message to let me know the Ram size has changed, click on Continue and its working perfectly. HWiNFO showing timings of 19-19-19-43. £130 delivered.

I put the Dell 4gb in the other slot and I now have a machine with 20GB in, sweet

The module is dual ranked as well, so it shows that even Crucial don't know what the issue was with the Ballistix, telling me dual rank wont work.

I'm pretty sure its the CL needing to be 19 where the Ballistix has 16.

Thanks Coldfire1 you've helped fix my memory frustrations!

They are different panels so production is still a bit immature.

On the other hand, Intel has been making this basic CPU for a long time and we see benefits of mature process.

This may sound like a stupid question, but any advice on how to properly open the T5 Torx of the XPS, without breaking them? I have a T5 Torx screwdriver, but I am literally the most clumsy person when it comes to all mechanical work. I have literally ruined a few Torx screws before and made the head round, even using the correct Torx tool for it. I actually hate Torx screws. No one should use them, where there is no need for it. And even T5 is way too small to handle properly. You open them 2 times, and then they're broken and you're f*ck**.

Make sure the T5 Torx you use is a decent one, not a budget as they tend to twist and mess the head up. I use a Teng Tools kit on mine, not inexpensive but a good investment - the T5 fits really snug and is rock solid. Try to keep the angle of the bit to match the screw as well as some of them aren't quite flat on the ouside of the case. A quick 'snap' to undo as the screws have what looks like a bit of loctite or thread stopper on them. Put them all in a little pot as they are easy to lose!

Look after your tools and your tools will look after you, as they say.

@Woodking I honestly have no idea, how in every review/video/comment whatsoever I read, people are ALWAYS saying "it was a piece of cake to open the XPS". I actually find it really hard. First, like you said, you seem to own an expensive Torx tool for it, the cheap Chinese kit ones you can buy for $10 for 20 or so are like lead, and seem to easily ruin a small Torx screw. I actually bought a good tool for it a few days ago, $7 for 1, made by Wera ( https://www.amazon.de/Wera-2067-Ele...8&qid=1530889333&sr=8-4&keywords=wera+torx+t5 ). Still it looks like the tools head isn't 100% symmetric to me, that's why T5 is just too small in my opinion, too much room for mistakes.

So let's say I have a good tool, Wera T5, you enter it, make sure it goes all the way down, and then, you make a quick strong rotation? Or try to rotate slowly with more force? Should you press down hard while doing so?

Wera are good from my experience, we just have different named tools in different regions I guess. I press down as I loosen the screw, with a reasonable amount of force, not too much, as this helps keep the bit sat in place. The screws seem to break free from the thread paste with just a little 'snap' of the wrist, anticlockwise after that its simple to get the back on/off. Lefty loosie - righty tighty! Don't tighten them too much when you put them back in, just a little after they stop going round. The 9570 is a lot easier first time than the 9550, I had a job to get the back off that one and had to use a plastic tool.

I've left mine with just the 2 screws under the flap installed for a while as I got fed up taking the back off to see if the next Ram upgrade actually worked. HTH.

Hehe got a new mobo and display today so my GPU is back in action. I am still getting 11C cooler temps on cores 2 and 4 (81C on cores 1 + 3, 92C on cores 2 + 4) :/ really not sure what I can do to fix it.

    That is a huge delta.

Does your benchmark push all cores similarly? Warped heatsink? Odd CPU surface? Lousy repaste?

Yeah I've never seen uneven temps like this before. Temps near idle are close (38-41c) but around 50-60C they hit 6C delta and at max there is a much higher one. The 9575's heatsink is super big and difficult to warp on the heat spreader's surface, though the pipes could be. I have repasted 20 times by now with large and small amounts of paste. I'm not sure how to fix the temp differential. Would more paste lessen the delta?

@Eason: Are you talking about the 9570 or the 9575? Anyway, why don't you try to use a more viscous thermal paste (like Gelid GC extreme). It can help with unevenness.

I have no idea either. Idle temps var doesn't say much.

More or thicker paste I suppose could compensate somewhat for uneven heatsink/die. The contrary case (liquid metal) requres tight tolerances to work properly.

My guess is a warped heatsink. You can lap the heatsink pretty easily just need to use caution. Lapping the CPU is a different kettle of fish. I would complain to Dell and get them to send you a new heatsink.

What are your experiences with the fan behaviour? Mine is not good. Even on lowest power preferences (Dell Power Manager on silent; energy battery symbol status slider left, throttlestop on battery) and repasting w. liquid metal, padding and undervolting the fans kick in every 10 or 20 seconds or even running w. 2.500 rpm for 15-20 seconds. Win 10 is up to date. This is very, very annoying. Imo Dell should invest some Bios-work on this item.

In the evening i'm watching dokus on youtube and then i want absolute silence. I had a Macbook Pro for a longer time and here you hear- nothing. Of course i repasted the Mac.

That is sadly how things are with the XPS, it always was like this, and Dell doesnt care to change it. The problem is, that the fans seem to kick in when CPU reaches about 45°C, which is just stupid. Dell doesnt care about it, and you cant change it, nor do apps like NBFC work. The trigger point is just way too low. It should just be set to 65°C.

I have fans kick in occasionally with small bursts on AC power. On battery power it's dead silent.

Has anyone with the Intel 9260 wireless card fitted in the 9570 had any issues with the BT range to connect to other devices?

I have an XPS 17 (702X) with an Intel Centrino N 1030 wireless card in it, and from the table where I sit and use it every day, it connects via BT to a Sunnyboy Inverter and updates to Sunny Explorer software and has worked well for years.

Testing the 9570 today to replace this machine, all up to date with Intel wireless drivers and BIOS, and using the same Sunnyboy software, I can only connect to the Inverter using BT if I move a lot closer and into another room. It connects well if I'm a lot closer and I've (yet again) had the back off this laptop and the 9260 card is seated properly and both aerial leads are connected.

Removed and reinstalled the card drivers, installed Intel Proset and tried it again but cant seem to find a way to boost the BT range/power.

Cool widget for HWiNFO64. I have been looking for something like this for Windoze and fan speed monitor for some time. How does one launch it from Win10?

On the 9550 and 9560, the PCH caused fans to start spinning at uber low temps (e.g. 38C but can't remember where threshold was set exactly). Fix was to put some thermal pads between it and the case bottom.

Perhaps next stupid low temp threshold might be the DIMM at around 62C. But you will need to research that on recent posts as I don't know much about it. Regardless, this is not the annoying fan trigger you are enjoying...

What's odd is that I think the 9570 was much better at fan control than the 9550/9560. I used it for hours at a time plugged in while studying and never really heard the fan. I'm typing on my Carbon right now and the fan just ramped up and I'm slightly annoyed, so I'm sure I would have noticed it.

Could be, that with 4k display the fans are kicking in more often at idle because the iGPU gets a bit warmer handling 4k than people who have the 1080p display.

Interesting, that's a possibility. Are you undervolting? Perhaps try undervolting the igpu??

I undervolted CPU, cache and iGPU by -90 to -100 mV. First, that didnt help much for low temps, because the CPU already seems to have very low voltage for low frequencies. Temps are around 42°C when idle and doing nothing, the moment I open a Chrome tab about every 20-30 seconds, temps go to 45-50°c and fans kick in all the time, it is just too annoying.

It also seems, the iGPU doesnt like undervolting much. I did prime95 test and it was stable, but all apps which used video decoding like Netflix, VLC ect had random app crashes with an undervolt of -100mV of the iGPU.

Doing mild work with the XPS with AC connected without fans kicking in is just impossible and it is the most annoying thing about it. If Dell would set the trigger point for the fans just 10 to even 20°C higher, it would be perfect. 45°C is just way too low.

Did you try including an undervolt to the System Agent? I found it helped lower the TDP when matched to the iGPU undervolt. You got a much better undervolt on your iGPU than mine, maybe it might help you a bit to give it a try?

Also, whats your max Turbo speed, is it still on 41? Try setting it in TS to 6 cores active 37 just to see if that help as well.

I deactivated turbo boost of course totally. Also set it to "quite" in Dell power too. How can you see if Chrome uses dGPU or iGPU? I think I checked actually, and it always showed 0°c or 0Hz for the dGPU so I think it was off in that case, and just was used when I started a game. What is System Agent actually? I think I saw before in TS videos, you shouldnt undervolt it, just CPU cache and iGPU. I use RivaStatisticsServer for that with MSI Afterburner to check in 3d applications.

There is this damn bug btw in Windows 10. If you play a game in 1080 fullscreen (switched to dGPU), and return to desktop (iGPU) in 4k, the systray is broken and looks like this:

And you have to reboot Windows to fix it.

Well, after days of trying to get BT to work as well as an old Dell XPS 17 thats been rock solid for years, I've sadly been defeated today!

Having to undervolt, repaste, pad and having to spend hours backwards and forwards to the Post Office returning different memory modules just to find one that works, I thought to myself "Why on earth am I continuing doing this to a laptop that has so many issues"?

Thats it, I'm done and this one's going back.

Thanks for all the advice, you guys are great but sometimes you have to know when enough is enough and this is that time for me.

Sorry about all the issues you have. I wish I could comment on the BT thing but I only used my bluetooth mouse. I really liked my 9570 and may pick one up once they hit the outlet for a decent price.

Thanks, you've been a good help on here and I do appreciate your input. My wife kept asking why I had to spend so much time trying to get a new laptop to work as well as an old one and I had to agree in the end. If the 9570 cant do what I need of it day to day I can't live with it, sadly.

Giving up on laptops for a while, going to spend more time outside in the sun. Peace to all.

@Woodking but why didnt the Intel 9260 not work for you? I thought all people recommend it. Bluetooth just has a range of about 10m, if its bt2 devices or such just 2-3m.

Someone mentioned it could be an issue with the card coming from a 3rd party merchant and maybe being a rejected unit with issues. The Killer 1535 worked better for BT but still no way near as well as an old Centrino card in my old XPS17 (I need to monitor a BT solar inverter and it collects data from it). The 9260 was otherwise ok for wifi, just very poor on bluetooth. Tried all sorts to get it to work but nothing did in the end.

Holy crap, I haven't seen Shin Etsu in YEARS, like 2003. I mean even at the time it wasn't great and wasn't better than Arctic silver 3 (yes 3). I would say it's probably equivalent to the stock dell stuff, maybe??

I actually just pulled the trigger on a XPS 15 :p It was on 15% discount...

FHD, 512GB SSD, 16GB RAM 8750H with biggest battery. Same as 4K version except the display :)

Would MX arctic silver 4 be any good? I have some laying around.

And Intel 9260, I just assume it's the best possible wifi card available?

I think you're confusing MX4 with Arctic silver? MX4 is still decent stuff, I wouldn't hesitate to use it if you've already got it.
I am happy with my 9260 wireless card, although it's not a huge improvement over the stock Killer card.

Oh snap, my bad, meant arctic cooling MX4 :)

And oh great, then I will use it :) Not worth spending 13 bucks to get one shot of Grizzly IMO, no need for it more than the laptop. Also have some EK water blocks thermal stuff, but that's probably not as good.

I could always start with the killer card before I order a new intel. Delivery set to around 25 July

Mh I wonder why they do the 15% sale right now. Maybe because the new Nvidia GPUs are coming out any moment, mostly announced next month. A mobile GTX1150 would mostly be as fast as a GTX1060.

"Someone mentioned it could be an issue with the card coming from a 3rd party merchant and maybe being a rejected unit with issues."

Ugh... and I just ordered one on ebay for $19, it says new though. Damn... so maybe these "cheap" ones on ebay are rejected by Intel?
