Mines just arrived :D, ironically the tracking never said it was out for delivery (and still doesn't!) but then I got a SMS from UKmail saying it would be delivered between 7:00 AM - 11 AM and at around 8:30 ish, it arrived!

    Unboxing time!

    Initial thoughts:

The screen is pure beauty, scaling is an issue in some apps, Google Chrome is hilarious at present in "Windows 8 mode", but desktop version is OK, the text isn't as crisp as it could be, Firefox seems to be better at 3200 x 1800, major apps like <del>Adobe Creative Suite</del> (See my post below) and Office seem fine and generally Windows 8.1 does a better job with scaling overall, I guess updates will be rolled out in time for apps that don't visually work well with this screen resolution.

Its whisper quiet, I can't hear this sound people have been talking about, I can hear some noises if I put my ear to the bottom left side, but then, that's normal?

Love the back-lit keyboard, having the keys black compared to silver on the XPS 15z is an improvement and for once the backlighting is EVEN. Hurrah

Touchpad is nice, probably one of the best ones out on a Windows machine, we all know Macbook Pro's take the prize for these though. though it seems left clicking is a bit hit and miss, if your not in the centre on the button, I generally tap to click anyway, but did notice this Maybe I'm just used to my 15z on this one.

Haven't tested the WiFi properly yet, but I'll be pulling installers from my Windows Home Server and be downloading some stuff so I'll comment on that later, I'm using my 5GHz band on my ASUS RT-N66U to see if performance lives up to it

Congrats :) Mine is on its way today too, won't be able to get my hands on it until I get home though.

In regards to your touchpad issues, somebody in the other thread mentions turning the sensitivity down improves gestures / click registry. Don't know if this will help.

Keep us up to date with any quick tips to setup / improve things but sounds like your impressed so far.

I'll retract a previous statement regarding the Adobe Creative Suite, I just tested InDesign and that does have scaling support by the looks of it, but others don't including Photoshop, Dreamweaver etc which tripped me up. I'm quite surprised that this is the case. I don't believe there are any workarounds, other than waiting for an update from Adobe. Damn.

Adobe Community: CS6 Hi Resolution Screen User Interface Problems

It also seems to be a problem with the Creative Cloud suite as well:

    http://feedback.photoshop.com/photo...display_too_small_on_dell_xps_15_touch_laptop

The best workaround I've done if you need the Creative Suite, is to drop the screen resolution back to 1080p and move the slider on "Change size if all items" to smallest. Text is not as crisp, but you'll then be able to use the Creative Suite apps without any issues.

WRT the noises from the XPS 15, are they high pitched whiny noises? If so, I remember that being the case with some of the M1330 motherboards I had; not particularly sure why as it'd be intermittent, but I think one of the causes was the wireless card when on charge.

Still waiting for a release date of the new XPS 13 too.

Well first major problem I've encountered, after a few hours of running, all of a sudden both the Intel and NVIDIA graphics drivers both kept crashing, had the Windows notification in the bottom saying they had recovered but kept crashing in a loop, causing a black screen, return to desktop, black screen, return to desktop etc. Hope that was just a one off.

My belief is that if you have the bigger battery, ie mSata SSD drive, that the 2.5" drive bay is no longer avilable to hold a real SSD drive.
Can someone confirm that when they get a chance?
The manual shows the drive bay, but I think it's also showing the smaller battery.
Since mSata is slower than SSD, I am wanting to put a real SSD drive in the laptop, so this will be important to know.
    Thanks

I believe this was answered in the other forum. What I am saying is true, so I will be returning mine that I ordered with the bigger battery and mSata and get one with the 1TB 5400 rpm drive and replace it with my 1TB SSD.

Well I've not had a great chance to play yet but very impressed with look, feel, speed, screen etc. Not had any driver crashes yet

To be honest, I'll be replacing the 1tb HD with a 1tb SSD at the weekend and doing a completely fresh install anyway

Not heard any whines or other noises but then I'm specifically trying not to listen/look :)

yeah that's what I ended up getting since I knew I wanted an ssd and finding a fast 1TB msata ssd seemed harder than finding a regular ssd

It may have just been a freak moment regarding the graphics drivers, NVIDIA related stuff started configuring as soon as I logged into Windows for the first time, but since a restart its been OK touch wood.

I'm certainly impressed with the screen, the scaling issue for some apps is the only thing that lets the experience down a little, but in time this will improve.

For me the top model with 512 GB was fine, sure I might have overpaid for the commodity but I store most of my data on network drives anyway at both home and work. Though I did notice the that the 512 GB MSATA (Samsung drive by the way) has a total ofsix partitions! The 512 GB capacity substract the usual space lost and the 15 GB total for these five partitions (six would be including C:/), quite taxing!

I would've gone for the top one to save me the hassle of switching out the HD but work had a cap on the amount so easier to buy the ssd separately :/

    6 partitions is just weird!

The screen scaling will get better over time. I have a retina macbook and wow things were bad on that other than apple apps, until people got their apps updated. But they did, and everything I download now is "retina aware". I'm sure as more laptops come out with high dpi screens it'll get better + windows 8.1 does deal with it more nicely than anything that's gone before.

I dont want to tempt fate, but so far it's shaping up to be the best pc laptop I've had in a long while (now I've said that, watch it break)

I verified this with pics in the owners thread.

You lose the ability to have a 2.5" drive with the larger battery.

Seriously considering getting this laptop to replace my 3 year old Latitude E6500 which has been great but is starting to show its age. Has been holding off replacing it because everyone stopped doing 1920x1200 screens, and I am a big fan of that resolution (better than 1920x1080 for design). My big concern is that my current screen is the non-reflective type (no glass), and from what I've seen of the XPS, the screen is super glossy and reflective.

So I wanted to know if this was going to be a big issue for me or if its not so bad when your actually using the screen. I tend to work in well lit environments, so really wanted to make sure this wasn't going to be a big issue.

    Appreciate the feedback :)

Its very reflective when it is off, not so much when it is on. I came from a matte 1080P screen and I dint miss it at all

I'm also in Netherlands and want to get the new XPS 15, probably the middle model. Currently, I'm considering to get it from UK website, which has a 17% discount. Then, send it to an agency and ask the agency to send it to Netherlands, which costs 5% excluding extra shipping. There's no additional tax to send it from UK to Netherlands, isn't there?

Most likely just a difference in the packaged Warranty.

At one point the 1 Year support was offered, with a 3 year support as a $259 option. For those interested both Costco and Microsoft Store are offering the middle level XPS 13 (i5, 8GB, 128GB) for $1199.

Costco also has the top-line i7 one $1599.

    How's gaming ont his machine.

Is there any game aside from Solitaire that you can play at 3200 x 1800? And if lowering res which you have to, is 900p or 1080p better in downscaling due to high res screen?

I've ordered the new xps 13 base model but one thing I'm a little confused about is the HDD. It's listed as a 128Gb msata SSD. Is this going to be something I can replace with a normal SSD? If not I might cancel my order as I don't necessarily want to be stuck at 128Gb in the future (and especially as I can order a 250Gb Samsung Evo for £100 + VAT today!).

    Thanks
