    1600 x 900 scales best as it's 1/4 of 3200 x 1800.

mSata is a mini-sata SSD and is not compatible with other SSD formats (as shown in the attachment from the Serial ATA wiki).

Although not designed to be 'user serviceable', unlike the memory (which is soldered), the mSata and wireless network can be replaced since they are socket based, but requires the removal of the case bottom using a T-5 torx screwdriver (as shown here).

From what I can tell, the largest mainstream mSata drive is 512GB.

I personally went with the XPS 13 i5/8GB/128GB system, which to me represents the sweet spot. The i5->i7 and 128GB->256GB upgrade wasn't worth the $400 premium to me and 8GB ram was the minimum I would consider.

So I guess my question is; are the internals between the two xps 13 models different? Why can the higher spec one take an SSD but the lower spec one only take an msata ssd? I would assume that they are both the same on the inside so wouldn't it be possible to open it up and put in a normall SSD in the same place that the higher spec machine has one?

The issue I foresee with replacing the 128Gb msata with a larger msata is the cost. Msata is not as prevalent from what I can see and that means less demand and higher prices. With SSD prices dropping every week it won't be long before a 256gb or even 512gb is a relatively cheap upgrade (if I can put in a normal SSD).

    Thanks for your informative post.

Don't think there are any XPS 13 that can take normal SSD. They all use mSATA SSD.

Ah. My confusion arose from the distinction they make on the order page

That is very strange. In the UK there are only 2 models available, and the upper model doesn't say msata. That's what caused all the confusion! We don't have the base model which is available in the USA. So the model I ordered is actually the middle option in the USA.

    Thanks for your help.

Is the xps 15 available for in-store pickup yet for non-residents of US? Even in stores of costco or bestbuy such? Also, what percentage tax is applicable on the price offered by these stores? I'll have to keep the dollars ready before travelling so I need some idea about the pricing. thanks, I've been waiting for almost a year now for a laptop, starting with samsung's series 7 chronos but I think i'll settle with the xps finally. Reviews seem mostly positive with some minor software bugs that can be fixed later.

best buy is not carrying the xps yet, as far as i know. the only place you can get it is costco which is cheaper than on Dell as well. and the price does not include tax so i recommend is to go to a tax free state because you can save hundred bucks on this 2k laptop

I do not understand the rationale behind the 4-5 weeks delay on shipping on the XPS 13 and XPS 11 laptops. How can there be such a delay and parts shortage on a laptop that has just come out? That sounds absolutely absurd to me. Dell takes your money and order and then ships the laptop as slow as humanely possible. My XPS 13 order is still 4-5 weeks delayed (even after ordering it on the same day it was released) and when I contact the sales person - who incidentally promised "very fast after sales support with care" she doesn't even bother to reply. Why should she? They have my money already.

I just do not understand Dell sometimes. I could walk down to the local store and purchase a Sony Vaio Pro 11 or 13 / Microsoft Surface Pro 2 and be using it this afternoon. They should have Estimated Delivery Date: Sometime before you die. I have purchased over 10 laptops from Dell in the past 7 years but I think this maybe the last time I buy Dell.

Thanks for clearing that up. However,
!)What about those who are not members of costco? Will they get the same price?
2)Which state to buy from is not an option ;p I have to get it from Pennsylvania. I'll be happy if tax is somewhere around $80-100 or below, any idea about that?
3)Does dell provide international warranty on these laptops? Too bad its not available in my country(strangely though m3800 is available -__- stupid dell)
    Thanks again.

Here's the price if I order online, get it shipped to a non tax state as a non-member
    Subtotal: $2,019.98
    Less Promo Code: ($19.99)
    Shipping & Handling: $29.95
    Non-Member Surcharge: $101.00
    Tax: $127.86
    Order Total: $2,258.80
Luckily for you, I live here in Pennsylvania and Delaware is right next to it which is where I usually buy stuff from so I could save the 30 bucks shipping and 128 bucks tax which is a significant saving for me if I bought one. The total for me would be: $2100.

    What a disappointment!
Ordered the $2,000 top of the line (model 9530) from Costco almost 3 weeks ago and finally received today:

    1) Ridiculous buzzing noise when the AC adapter is connected
    2) Orrible LCD pressure point when moving lid up and down
    3) At least one burned pixel (didn't even care to check further for more)
    4) Touchpad borderline unusable
    5) [A matter of taste but] the font used on the keyboard looks more like Klingon (isn't this supposed to be a pro machine?)

Do Dell even know what QA is?
Didn't even bother to call support (don't want to wait 3 more weeks for another possibly flawed unit).
Thank God for Costco wonderful return policy!

For any of the owners: can you check which resolutions is the webcam able to capture video? Is it HD 720p or 1080p?

In Linux, the following command can be useful for that:

    v4l2-ctl --list-formats-ext -d /dev/video0

Otherwise, in Windows, some programs allow you to choose a resolution from the available ones.

I don't believe they "take your money" until they ship the laptop, but I agree with your general point. I think Dell was too eager to get this to market, so they put it on their website without having adequate (or any) supply and without even getting models to reviewers to review before they were officially released. I don't like that, but it is the first time Dell has done it on a model I have purchased, so I will give them a break. Anyone who posts here should have been aware that was the situation and could have decided not to proceed.

I would have to "humbly" disagree with you,

My Credit Card was charged when I made the purchase so for me, they do take your money.

Secondly, I do not think it is fair to say that all consumers ought to read this board before making the purchase. A reasonable consumer ought to be able to rely on the information given by Dell. Since there is no information on Dell's website about this part shortage or any delays, the fact that the delivery times on the purchase page says 11-17 days for XPS models, and during the chat the Agent specifies:

I think a reasonable consumer would expect that it ought to be delivered in that time frame. To change that delivery time to 5-6 weeks AFTER the purchase for me is unacceptable. That is the issue I was raising.

I have a question for owners of the new XPS13. Do the Win8 gestures work OK where you swipe in from the top or side of the screen? The bezel looks a little thin - I wonder if this might make the swiping gestures awkward.

Would also be very interested in general first impressions of the machine. Please post these :)

Nope, I'll just go to the Apple store nearby instead, and get a MBP. It's a few hundred dollars more expensive but as they say: you get what you pay for.
Now I know why Dell almost went bankrupt and had to go private to avoid it.

You are probably just as likely to get a lemon from Apple. Just take a stroll on to the Apple website itself and read the reviews or better yet read up on this forum. No one is impervious to lemons

Noticed the xps 13 developer edition has a higher spec CPU and IGPU than the highest spec windows version. Is this normal?

    4500u vs 4650 and HD 4400 vs HD 5000.

Worth getting the developer edition and installing windows on it or could this have issues?

    Dell or someone needs to make a 17 inch with a 3200 x 1800 or 2,560 x 1,440 IPS or 2880 x 1620 like we have seen recent 15.6 inch screens.

or 4K what ever that is

I wonder if we will see one soon?

To top it off No DVD drive and add in a thunderbolt port (or at least all USB 3.0 ports) and a good HHD + SSD options now I don't think that's asking too much in 2013 (actually should say 2014) since I don't believe many new notebooks will appear in what's left of 2013.

I know someone is going to say it cost to much but how much more can it be then a 15.6 inch it's not that much bigger? And what about high res monitors that dell will be presenting soon.

Also they could just make 17 inch Screens with those high resolutions screens for special request notebook orders.

I returned my top XPS15 for all the same reasons. I can sympathize...

However you're only kidding yourself if you believe Apple has good support, or that anything can be accomplished in less than an hour instore with their "geniuses".

Dell has a winner with this machine once it gets a few revisions under its belt. For now, I bought a ThinkPad... but I'll be back for ver2 of the XPS.

This could be the same issue reported on the XPS 15 thread. Can you tell us if the whine is all the time or only when on battery or charger? I'm thinking of ordering but may want to hold off until the first batch or two are in the hands of consumers. Thanks.

The delivery date was just updated to add 3 weeks. I ordered on Nov 15, had an original delivery estimate of Dec 20, and now have an est delivery date of Jan 10.

I'm pretty disappointed with dell right now. 2 months for a laptop that I couldn't even customize is pretty ridiculous.

straight from DELL, but i didn't do the ordering.

It's my work machine, and we ordered a bunch as soon as they were available on the DELL site last month.

Sorry don't know any more details.
