+1 for the XPS 14"
As I remember, they released the first XPS 14z a little bit latter than the XPS 15z. I don't remeber about XPS 14 last year... Hopefully, it will be the same now. -

Like obviously depends on the customizations you choose, but I'm sure some will be available from day 1(maxed out probably) -
Which is going to run warmer at idle or near-idle, the 37W TDP quad i7-4702MQ or the 47W TDP dual i5-4200H?
If we want the bigger battery we'll be forced to take the 1800p, 500GB SSD, and quad core all together. That's gonna be hells expensive. -
I hope these things are user serviceable. I really appreciated that about the L521X, as more manufacturers are locking up their systems. The specsheet says the battery is not user-replaceable, though. -
XPS 15 will be for October...the rest for November basically holiday season...
Good gallery here....

There is an ethernet-dongle for the USB port. One can see from the pictures in the article that there is no Ethernet port. -
Any word on the processor models for the XPS 13?
-
-
Will a xps 15 model having 1080p touch display,256gb ssd with i5 and gt 750m be available anytime later in the future? I really hope they let us customise. At the moment the lowest priced model is too underspecced and the highest specced model would probably be too overpriced. I want something in between.

It seems Dell is dropping the ball big time on this one. So what are the alternatives at this level with an optimal drive and without some silly novelty touch screen? A rather big shame here since the current system is extremely good and a higher res screen with an upgraded processor would have been wonderful. Instead this won't work as a multi media center for home, it's smaller which seems silly given the last model tiny and extremely light already and if anything needed more size to provide a better keyboard which imo was a bit weak on the last model.
I also really wish they'd look into offering more high end processor based models without the over the top graphics. The alien ware models other than look horrible would be great options for work if they'd put reasonably priced graphics cards in there (clearly it would need to be another series as that is a gaming line). -
About time Dell announced this. Wish that another XPS 14 was also announced, or at least plans for one down the road were revealed. I still think the whole 14" screen on a 13" form factor is pretty much the ideal when it comes to laptops; neither too big, as with 15" frames or too small with the XPS 13's 11" frame.
Will probably order the XPS 13 when it is released. -
It's simultaneously thinner and lighter, while having a faster processor, faster graphics card, higher res screen and better battery life. Not sure how that even comes close to 'dropping' the ball? Sounds pretty perfect to me actually.
As discussed earlier, the way the general PC industry is going, optical drives are basically redundant. The vast majority consume their content digitally now, optical media is becoming more and more redundant (more expensive due to manufacturing/shipping/retail store overheads, slow (both in terms of speed and in terms of time to consume, and small in capacity). Only going to become more and more true as more content gets pushed online (as the stupid US content providers get the picture) and as internet speeds get faster and faster.
You want a high end processor, yet call it being smaller 'silly' and don't want an alienware.. .you seem confused.
The XPS definitely has a market, otherwise they wouldn't have pushed it out. It's basically Dells response to the Macbook Pro Retina (as the previous gen XPS15 was), and we all know how immensely popular the MBPR is (and guess what, that's also thin and doesn't have an optical drive, shock horror, yet has sold by the millions).
I think it definitely has the right balance of size/weight/CPU power/GPU power/battery life. Can't get any more powerful without generating more heat, sapping battery or being bigger. You want power? Buy a Desktop or a mobile workstation (like the Precision). You want GPU power? Buy an alienware or any other number of horrible looking, silly sized gaming notebooks. For me, and i'm guessing a lot of others, the new XPS15 looks awesome. It's thin and light with good enough battery life that I can take it around with me and not break my back, yet should be powerful enough to fire up the odd game or work on the odd CAD model etc. Obviously i'm not going to be running CFD or any complex calcs on it, nor playing BF4 @ Ultra settings, but it will definitely do in a pinch.Skareem2 likes this. -
Why can't you just say that you think the new models aren't to your preference, rather than slam Dell for making a big mistake? (as if you'd know what a mistake is in their market).Skareem2 likes this. -
your opinion is valued but make sure you do your research on dell's product lines and what they are aimed at before bashing dell or the XPS line since it does not meet your needs as an end user who did not do his research. also the older generation is still available if you prefer that model ...
as for my take on this system im in love honestly cuz i have a XPS L502x and the only thing im worried about is sound quality, wifi performance and over heating that the older model suffered from.
would be nice to know the wattage of the speakers since the MBPR has actually has 4 speakers two per enclosure so there is some bass and wide range of sound. but ill give up the sound quality i have now for a slim light system one it can stay cool and handle some form of games.
must say dell is impressing me even the inspiron 7000 with its mac like design and high repeatability is impressive viewed the system manuals.
awaiting the reviews for this machine -
An other alternative to the XPS is the inspiron 7000 15" model as soon as they come out with the 1080p screen except the XPS has a bigger battery . but other vise similar specs.
if you dont need the fancy high res screen. -

Thank you for the response. I have in front of me the current XPS 15. It needs an upgrade in processor power, I'd honestly like to see one of the intel chips with 8meg cache, in a non alienware over the top body with more graphics than I'll ever need. That said the 4th gen processor would be a reasonable compromise. The problem with the inspiron series is that they simply have a cheaper feeling build quality. We just bought about a dozen at work as we were trying to save some money, first time we ever bought a non xps laptop that I"m aware of. They're nice and certainly aren't poorly made but they greatly lack the build quality of the XPS. And they certainly need better screens though that might be becoming an option.
If the XPS is to be the TOP of the line machine then they need a top of the line model. Dropping blu ray takes it out of multi media. The touch screen truly adds no business value and maybe I'm just a pessimist but I cannot imagine touch screens being a value add in a computer in the next 5 years (the max useful life of these).
Now for me, I'd like to get an XPS as a personal laptop for myself, but I need more processor power than the current models offer. If I'm going to spend 3k on a computer it better be able to handle multiple needs such as blu ray. Now I might be out of touch or you know....my being over 120 pounds I don't get why people need thinner and lighter given the current models are light as a feather while still feeling like they're high quality and well put together, but that's fine if people want that. I would however like the fan to be off more often. The current systems run the fan when just idling, not really a good thing imo.
I end what is already too long a response with this. I'm not sure who the market is for this new system. It seems to lack the needs of the home user who wants a power house system. It is too expensive for the causal user. It offers unneeded features that add cost for business. It's still an amazing laptop but I don't see the market. And well it's not apple so the people who do video/photo editing or ruby coding I can't seem switching. -

hmmm... XPS15 or P35K? :confused2:

Laptops are all about compromise, because of what they are. You can pack them full of power, but then you're going to need a better cooling system, bigger powersupply and bigger chassis to deal with it. It's all about designing it to the right specifications (size/weight/power) for your target market. They have the Precision line for customers who need a workstation (you just have to realise that packing that much power means it's going to be big and bulky). The M3800 is about going after those who still need all the corporate features and a workstation GPU, but not to the same extent. I can't find the specs, but chances are you might be able to get a faster CPU in the M3800 than the XPS15?
Anyways, they're speccing the XPS15 with just about the fastest *mobile* CPU available (there are the 4800/4900MQ, but they're just minor mhz bumps). You can't expect a package like the XPS15 to be packing a 6 core IvyBridge-E desktop CPU, now can you?
RE the BD drive, Apple's MacBookPro dropped the optical drive, and that's pegged as their top end, highest level laptop, and like I said, they sell them by the millions. Obviously not many people are missing it.
Who they're marketing it to? Everyone who is buying a MacbookPro or really, everyone anyways. It's thin and light enough to take on the go with you, but powerful enough to deal with just about anything. You say "It seems to lack the needs of the home user who wants a power house system." - it's one of the highest specced consumer grade laptops around. " It is too expensive for the causal user." - but people buy the MBPR15 by the millions and thats MORE expensive. " It offers unneeded features that add cost for business." such as?
In my eyes it has a huge market.

The touch-screen allows us to interact with windows 8 better and in the next 5 years windows could change completely so touch would be an asset then with the way windows 8 to 8.x or even windows 9 is going you need to compromise or look at other options seriously. On that note you should also know that when dell launches a product they usually have 2 to 4 initial configurations and later on like a month or two release more configurations, they could be testing various configs with better CPU's and graphics still &you can get an external blue-ray drive.
Thinner laptops are in now cuz personally i love my l502X especially the speakers but it is heavy and bulky to carry around with me to school and the power brick is heavy too meaning my bag feels like 10 pounds laptop + books .... I would rather the 4 pound slimmer XPS that would give me almost all day battery life so i wont need a power adapter and a thick laptop with an optical drive i rarely use.
*** I will say this again the XPS line is not gaming / multimedia like it used to be it is targeting mac book and mac book pro with retina customers ***
it targets mac customers or people who cant afford mac's simple the XPS is a powerful ultra-book simple. some people would be glad for a mac equivalent in the pc space and the XPS is very close i suggest you check out the precision line as your are already willing to spend 3K on a laptop.
M3800 precision should give u business class GPU's and a slightly better CPU it will be a little bit thicker but still slim with a good cooling system and ability to dock. it will still have the touch-screen and 3200 x 1800 resolution which i think makes windows 8 better i like windows 8 but touch pad/ mouse is needs improvement.
as moda said you have to compromise you want a dell for a particular reason then compromise and see what you really need from what you don't else you would have been checking HP, or ASUS or APPLE so look at the precision line or wait for dell to release more configurations of the XPS that suites your liking. happy decision making
im pretty sure the internals of this new XPS will be in a similar layout but more repairable than the MBPR
only thing i would have asked of dell was 2 mini sub woofers along with the 2 smaller speakers in front to have balanced sound not L502X level sound but two small 2 or 4 watt sub-woofers and the usual speakers would make a good sounding slim laptop.
i am dieing to see the user guide for this thing i hope its as impressive a layout inside as they did with the inspiron 7000 series -
any mention or chance of the XPS's graphics card being GDDR5?
im still waiting for a laptop to have a 750M with GDDR5 so far they are all DDR3. quite disappointing. thanks -

not cool @ the i5 model having integrated graphics so y cant the i5 model have the same GPU or a slight compromise like a GT 730M or 735M for i5 models
an i5 should push less heat than the i7 models so the GT 750m GPU should not affect thermals ....
this leads me to believe if you want the 3200 X 1800 screen you will need the I7 models but from my research i looks as though the integrated graphics support the resolution hope dell has more configurations in the pipeline -

GIGABYTE - Notebook & Netbook - Notebook & Netbook - P series - P35K
The competitors in this moment for me are:
Gigabyte P35K
Samsung Ativ book 8 (when it will have Haswell refresh, someone has said the it will come on October)
Dell XPS15.
Gigabyte P35K and Samsung Ativ Book 8 have a more powerful CPU and GPU than XPS15.Skareem2 likes this. -

so the GT750m what is it? Maybe garbage?
Keep in mind that Gigabyte P35K is not out in market yet, so the few unit in hand to some reviewer are pre-production units
There are many reviewers out there, but only few are reliable as for example Notebookcheck and Anandtech.
We have seen that just for previous XPS15 L521x, many good reviews, but we have had the truth only from Notebookcheck and Anandtech, the XPS 15 L521x had a ridiculous throttling and you could have thermal shutdown just because you have connected an external display, and the solutions that is came from Dell to Wi-Fi issue was a external adapter, are you serious? That was a 1500$ (at least) machine!Skareem2 likes this. -

I like P35K, but it's very probable that it will not sold in my country, but surely Samsung Ativ Book 8 is already in my market (I'm waiting the Haswell update to make a choice) and it's well balanced and it can even handle the overclock of GPU (8870m) and this means that it's well designed, moreover CPU (it's highly probable that it will be a i7 4700HQ) and GPU of Samsung are more powerful than new XPS15.
If XPS15 works as intended then it's a interesting notebook, but the price of the version with all the interesting things may not be competitive. I'm speaking of i7 4702HQ + GT750m + IGZO display + full battery (which also means 512 mSATA SSD).
Also the unusual resolution (3200X1800) could be a problem to visualize a FHD (1920X1080) videos and obviously the GT750m cannot handle this high resolution in games so most the time you will be forced to set at least 1600X900 if you don't want blurred images.
Someone could say that there is a 1920X1080 option, but I'm enough sure that it will be the screen of previous XPS15 L521x (it's a TN) that has disappointed many users. -
