Thanks Cin', I'll be sure to tell Mom and Dad you said Thanks!
I see you post alot in the Dell area, are you the "Dell Man" of these forums?
Yeah, it is neat to see how the technology in Laptops has changed over the years. I still occassionally use the 4000, especially since I don't (yet?) have Linux on the 1537. It's great to play old, non-graphic intense Linux games on! -
lol..I hope they laugh!
Yes, I do post a lot!
What can I say..I likey the Dell brand! And, lol...not the Dell Man, but Woman...sounds much better
I just try and help where I can!
Yeah, thats cool about the 4000, are you going to still keep using it?
Cin -
Cin; wanna get a hotel room? show me your dell i show you mine
-
-
-
I know what you mean, I like the Dell brand too. And I think that its great when people with Computer knowledge help/share that with others, myself included
I'll probably still use it somewhat. I'm looking into replacing the old HDD with an SSD. I need some money first though... -
*giggles*
How are things going with your lappy now, nearly a month later?
Cin -
That studio 1537 is awesome. Dell build quality has changed a lot since the inspiron 4000
-
I got to use it on a flight from D.C to Houston, Tx. It was great knowing I actually had a decent amount of battery life!
It is also a great machine for watching Blu-Ray films at lunch with friends during school
There are 2 issues that annoy me the most:
1. Eject button getting stuck. Common problem, but none the less annoying. I try to avoid this by shuting down every night and taking the battery out. This seems to "solve" the problem.
2. I have the fingerprint reader. Sometimes on boot, and the Vista log-in screen, it will say "Reader Not Detected", and I have to restart, sometimes many times, to get the reader detected. Also, Internet Explorer 8 does not like to actually load the Digital Persona "Quick Links"
Overall though, great laptop, I would reccomend it for anyone looking for a good mainstream laptop. -
hi
just got my new studio xps 13.
Intel Core2Duo P8600,
4gigs of DDR3 RAM,
320gb 7200rpm hdd,
WLED 13" (1280x800) glossy display.
64bit vista.
cons:
1. serious heating issues. (it gets so hot that you cannot keep it on you lap beyond the initial ten odd minutes)
2. super glossy screen. -
That's good to hear it's working out for you!!
Sounds like you are working around your little *annoyances* also! Have you tried using FireFox at all?
If the heating issue doesnt improve for you? Are you going to be contacting Dell regarding this?
Cin -
No Cin', I hadn't thought about trying FireFox. I'll give that a shot...
-
Let us know!
Cin -
Firefox+Quick Links=Epic Win
Thanks Cin' that did the trick! I had forgotten how much better Firefox was than IE... -
Awesome..Thought it would work for yah!
I can't tell you how many times....I have had EPIC fails with IE...
And each and everytime I complain about it to a certain *someone* I get the facepalm..lulz!
So, I try and stick with FF, no matter what. Still fighting the IE addiction after years of usage though!
Cin -
I think after a little while in FF you will not want to go back to IE. The extensions are really cool!

http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=4791013&postcount=3773 -
i have bought 4 dells this year,
brand new dell inspiron 1545 in 3/09: returned due to defective screen
refurb dell studio 17 in 3/09: very satisfied, as in my sig
scratch & dent dell studio xps 16: great but doesnt fit my need, put it up on ebay.
scratch & dent dell studio xps 13: never opened, on ebay along with studio 16. -
About time...you have been waiting long enough!
Grat's
Cin -
dell studio 17: neither hard drive nor memory card reader was working right out of box, laptop was sent back for repairs immediately.
dell studio 13 scratch & dent: 1 dead pixel,
makes some strange noise, runs quite hot.
pending return.
which means, 3 out of 4 thats 75% of dell laptops i have purchased so far this year turned out to be duds.

Dell Studio 15 1536 Scratch and Dent for 550 Shipped (660 CAD) -
Got my Inspiron 13 today.
Specs in my sig.
Feels pretty solid, hope it will last me until I graduate!
The dust and fingerprint magnet hearsay is no lie.
When I scroll with the touchpad, sometimes it just scrolls down/up until the end. Have to either find a fix or make my fingers adapt.
Next stop: Dual booting Linux. -
Oh well, possible 1555 upgrade returning to me -
i ordered my baby on 7/14/09 ive yet to recieve it. the specs are in my sig

Hi all,
New around here and got a question. Just got my brand new Inspiron laptop, and I noticed that the first start-up is awfully slow. Does it have to do with all the bloat? I will be using this only on the go, so I take it I need to re-format and clean up all the garbage.
I specifically asked that no security suite be installed and yet they've put on this demo p.o.s. McAfee
Anyway, I'm looking forward to a lot of fruitful discussions and for any ways I can help anyone as I learn along. It's my first foray into Vista, and so far -- I hate it! P.o.s.! -
-
I understand that Vin but 20 minutes? Never had to go through such a delay with XP on first start-up. Ah well welcome to Vista I guess.
-
vista has to learn the way you use your machine too, so the first 10 or 20 starts are very slow
-
vista first is too slow thats true, anyways the first thing i do is
1. uninstall mcafee as soon as possible.
2. uninstall office student and home 60 day trial crap.
3. uninstall works.
4. Permanently close sidebar.
Thats it , there wasnt a lot of crap with dell, most of the software that is dell branded is actually useful, like dock, etc. -
i format, strip and streamline vista. once i got used to it i dont mind it anymore. but i will go to w7 asap...
-
Ordered the two in my Sig on 9/2, and I can't stop checking the order status site. Or get off of these forums.
-
got my studio 1555 laptop
My first impression is:
-slow! (is this because of the bloatware?, also i wonder why mysql is part of the auto run service... it takes too much memory)
-there's no more touch sensitive media button!!! I think that would have been cool....
-where's the wifi switch on the side? (there's none in mine)
- i like the lcd... just sweet spot at 900p
- the battery life is short... only 2hours and a few minutes
but overall im not dissappointed but not amazed either... i gotta work to speed things up... ill do the bloatware removal stuff and Vista tweaks... I haven't installed any app yet so I can't really say how my lappie performs when i do Photoshop or Adobe Premiere -
out of the box vista is a turd. i format before i even install anything and strip it down to the bare essentials.
oh, and those touch sensitive buttons are junk, i hate them. you aren't missing anything, trust me -
I have a question... my studio 1555 doesnt come with the media direct cd... perhaps there is no media direct on the laptop itself... there is no special media direct button either.. If I want to do the clean install would directly re-installing vista do the job?
-
MediaDirect is being phased out due to the problems it has caused in the past.
not sure what you are asking with your second question though - directly re-installing Vista would do the job for what exactly?
mySQL service should not be installed as default unless you have some software that relies on having a database to work - for example some media players require a database in the background to store television programme information. You can always go to start > run > services.msc then find the mysql service, right click it and go to properties, then change the start type to manual or disabled. See if any of your installed programs then fall over. -

The screen itself is much smaller than I anticipated. I assumed that the screen was square & it is rectangular & wide screen. It will take some getting used to! -
I ordered the XPS 13 in my sig on 10/6, estimated delivery date was 10/22, but FedEx says it's coming tomorrow 10/14. Woohoo! Eight days from order to delivery is way better than I anticipated.

I ordered a Studio XPS 16 from Dell.ca on
Ordered: Nov 5
Dell EDD: Dec 07
It came: Nov 20
Dell got it early, kudos to them. I ordered a core2duo ~2 months ago, with a 320gb, hdd and dvd-rw. when i saw the core i7 come out a week or so after i got my lap, i was disappoint. so i called dell, they cancelled that order, took the return and sent me a new Studio XPS with i7, SSD and BR-rom.
This is truly my dream lap, and I had a great experience with Dell.
^-^
-
the i7 has 8 cores????
-
4 cores + HT
-
oh, thats what i thought.
-
Dell Studio XPS 1645
Intel Core i7-820QM (8 MB L3 cache, 1.73-3.06 GHz, HT support so 8 cores total)
8 GB DDR3 RAM at 1333 MHz dual channel
256 GB Samsung PB22-JS23 solid state drive
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670 with 1 GB DDR3 video RAM and up to 4 GB shared
16" RGBLED 1920x1080 screen
2 MP webcam with facial recognition
Intel Ultimate N WifiLink 5300
Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
DVD+/-RW
6-cell and 9-cell battery
Great laptop. I was in the market for a new 16" laptop with a 1080p screen and decent gaming capabilities in June 2009 and I was impressed and got the original SXPS 1640 with the ATI 3670. Then, I got the SXPS with the ATI 4670 when it came out, and exchanged it for this one when it broke twice. This laptop does run warmer than my old Acer Aspire 6920G according to HW Monitor, however it's well within safe limits even under stress. Laptop looks great, built very nicely, and RGBLED screen is marvellous! Apparently it's the best in the market, even better than Apple's fruit laptops.
i7 is amazing, and coupled with the SSD, I have seen a very noticeable speed and responsive increase. Great purchase, exchange actually, and would recommend anyone needing graphics power with a great screen and great overall components to get this laptop!
I guess 2 bad things are: 7-8 lb so might be heavy for some, and 2-3 hour battery life with the 6-cell. -
lol, an i7 with a 2-3 hour battery life, is a bad thing? if people need more time, get a 9 cell.
