I just swapped my BOE panel for a LP156WF6-SPB1.
Yuck. Really disappointed. Messed with a bunch of ICC profiles, as well as my own attempts, but all of them leave the colours looking... odd. Colours might look a little bit "washed out" on the BOE, but in general I much prefer it.

@Talon Your feedback would be appreciated too as I know you obtained yours by buying a used ASUS panel.
UPDATE: Found a used panel from the same exact seller that you got yours from. It's taken from the 540SA. I'll send you a message on Youtube since it won't let me PM here.Last edited: Jun 30, 2016 -

Cheers. -
anybody facing "Random Black screen" issue.
my machine is going blank all of sudden(keyboard is still on, only screen black) and it is random. after 5-10 minutes, it is powering up.
searched DELL forums. no solution even though many are facing same issue.
Got this in Feb, and it is happening since 3 weeks. -

This is rather technical, but I was wondering if anyone has any experience modifying the vBIOS of the 960m in this laptop? I've been struggling to get the utmost performance out of this card, and so far I've hit a wall with the imposed limits of +135MHz on the core clock. Reading around, it seems like some laptop models have modified vBIOS created by the community or straight up system BIOS mods that allow for overclocking beyond this point.
And before anyone says that its not worth the effort, risk, etc. my laptop is running at +135MHz on the core, +600MHz on the VRAM, with a 100mV undervolt and running at 60C max 100% load. The cooling on this laptop is great, and with the right BIOS I bet I could get that core clock to 200 or beyond. If anyone knows any leads here, I'd much appreciate it.
I just wish the 6300HQ was overclockable too. I can undervolt that thing like crazy and still have headroom. AFAIK, OCing Intel HQ CPUs is impossible though. -
I used to overclock years ago and the performance gains are minimal. Your risking damaging your computer. Buy a better computer with better more powerful graphics and enjoy it. Or if you ruin your motherboard you will just have Dell buy you a new one because its on warranty?
-
The overclocked gains the 960m is actually very good and very worth overclocking. I gain around 15-20% in most games, some higher. -

What I did:
- Backup the BIOS using FPT (Flash Programming Tool, see Intel ME System Tools) and always upload it to a cloud or USB, just in case
- Extract the vBIOS from the backup using MMTool (the vBIOS is an "option ROM")
- Send it to a nice guy over at TechInferno to remove the +135 lock (he did it for other laptops with great success)
- replace the old vBIOS in the backup with the modded one using MMTool
- flash the modded backup using FPT
- reboot
- aaaand BRICKED - everything went fine, only "Boot Guard" is the problem.
unbricking:
- buy a CH341A and a SOIC8 SOP8 Test Clip
- take apart the laptop
- look for the W25Q64BV on the motherboard
- connect the battery with the motherboard (the CH341A is too weak for in circuit programming without a power source)
- connect the CH341A with the W25Q64BV using the SOIC8 SOP8 Test Clip
- flash the clean bios backup
- pray desperately that your baby went through this hell unharmed
- reboot
- never ever think about modding your bios again

So I just got one of these in from the dell outlet and I must say... I am fairly impressed. I got every option and came in far less that most machines with these specs. I had a lenovo Y700 touch before this (1080p) and I thought I was going to miss the aluminum build... I can happily say that this is as good if not better. The build quality for a plastic laptop is better than some aluminum/plastic computers I have used recently. The 4k screen is also much better than I imagined after reading some reviews. Either way, I am super impressed and can't wait to see what tweaks I can make to get decent enough performance when I am on the road. (my last road warrior had a 980m)
The only complaint I have is that it seems like the wifi stops working at times. I am in the process of downloading the wifi driver from the support page... hopefully that fixes it. -
Heya guys! Been lurking around while contemplating if I should change out my BOE panel for a better one (not really super into color-specific work but I do occasional video coloring). I just ordered the HL06-C01 screen from AliExpress for around $90 plus shipping (the exact model, too!), but I currently have the option to cancel it and get the SPB1 instead. Question is, how much better is the HL06 display vs. the SPB1?
-
What do you guys think about the LP156WF6 (Sp) (A1) screen? Will this fit? I think the only difference between this and the (B1) is the A1 is glossy.
I tend to like the look of glossy screens. -
So I ordered the unit on the 16th (i5, FHD, 1TB).
On the dell canada website is says "Smart Selection - Ships (basically next day)"
It's the 19th now and it's still "in production" ETA 03/08/16
I didn't add anything extra besides extra warranty. Is this normal? -
-
just to let you guys know, PLS(samsung's ips) is the best IPS panel. You can read in most forums and samsung wins in most of the comparisons.

It finally shipped and is somewhere between Texas and Canada...
It's here
BTW, if you hit Fn-H that switches the front LED from battery to HDD modeLast edited by a moderator: Aug 2, 2016 -
Whoa, didn't know that was possible. Although it's pretty distracting in a dark room.
BTW guys, for those who care, I just got a display shipment from that AliExpress seller that another member on here posted. I was planning on getting the HL06, and he showed me actual photos of the item and the bar code. What arrived though was a damaged HL01-102.Currently disputing it and sourced a legitimate HL06 from another, much more helpful seller on there as well. I initially thought of also getting the SPB1 and comparing it seeing as there aren't any reviews between the two, but budget problems lol.
-
Glad it arrived. I was getting phone calls daily from Purolator telling me it was here and it wasnt. Thanks for the Function tip too. Whats it supposed to do on battery? I never seen this lit up before. Also where did you find that info?

I got the BOE display and it's not as bad as I thought it was going to be from all the complaints I've read about it. I can live with it just fine
ripped out the 1TB drive and the wireless card
Put a 250GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD in the M.2 slot and a 960GB ADATA Premier SP550 SSD in the HDD bay.
For the wireless it's an Intel 7265.NGWG.W card now.
Also changed it from Windows 10 Home to Pro
The thing flies now and I'm quite happy.. -
I ran one of those 7265 and was having bluetooth issues. I have tried a Killer 1535 but decided I wanted to have WIDI. The Killer worked flawlessly and I liked the software. I have an 8260 now and its working great. I am thinking my bluetooth issue with the 7265 was that I should have deleted the original pairing with my speaker as I was having cutting out issues.
What does Windows 10 Pro give you that home doesnt?Last edited by a moderator: Aug 2, 2016 -

Sooooo is nobody interested in the Samsung and LG display comparisons anymore? I recently received the HL06 and I'm so far loving the colors and brightness on it, but it kind of has more ghosting than the stock BOE panel.
I'm currently contemplating if I should get the SPB1 as well and compare it with the HL06, but depends if I'll be able to dispose of either after I test them. I'll try to do a comprehensive review of the three panels as soon as I get my hands on the SPB1---any pointers on how I should go about this? -
I went with the SPA1 and love it. I realized i prefer glossy over matte, although reflections suck, but the depth of colors just blows me away....
-
I recently bought this Laptop to replace my XPS15 9550 (which was twice the Price but nearly the same specs). I think the inspiron is really worth the Price. Well...the wobbling screen could be better but it`s ok. The one Thing that disturbes me is the Keyboard Flex. Did s.o. find a way to some Kind of fixing it. Would a Keyboard replacement maybe fix it (put s.th. beneath)? I read about some users here having no Flex.

I kind of think I know the answer here, but I am gonna ask anyway. Just ordered one of these from Dell Outlet, so my choices were very limited (but the price was VERY right!) I will pickup an m.2 and 8 gigs more of RAM, but does anyone know is I can replace the 1080 screen with a non touch UHD screen? I would assume the the Touch panel is going to have different connections than my non touch does. Any thoughts would help.
-
Are there any directions anywhere on how to change out the keyboard or to see if it's connected all the way? I tried to find a YT video for it like there are for other laptop fixes/etc. but couldn't find anything, One other issue I'm having is the palm rest area on the right side is making this squeaking noise when I press down on it.

Just picked this up on Friday and immediately replaced the HDD with a Samsung EVO 850 (500GB), reinstalled Windows and installed Samsung Magician. It says that AHCI is not enabled, however after looking at the settings in the BIOS, it is enabled.
Does anyone have any suggestions / idea? Does anyone else have this "issue" or anomaly? -
Guys i really need help to figure it out which is the best way to clean the 7559. and if there is a way to prevent the fingerprints that would be also useful although is not a major problem for me. Any suggestions?

Just got me one of these, coming from an Acer Aspire Nitro 592G. Unfortunately the motherboard on my Acer died
and so it was prime candidate for "spares"
The i7 6700HQ in my new dell compared to the 6300HQ that was in my Acer more than makes up for the drop from DDR4 to DDR3L. That, and the extra 2gb on the 960m is a nice bonus too.
I swapped out the (crappy) Intel WiFi for the QCA61x4A I took out of my Acer, its a AC Dual Band MiMo 2x22 card compared to the intels 1x1. I found the Intel WiFi a little unreliable and slow, even with the latest 19 series drivers. I also added another 8gb of identical DDR3L, swapped the HDD for a 512Gb EVO 950 and also added a Samsung OEM M2 128gb SSD for the OS, also pulled out of my Acer.
My Dell came with the LG screen, which was rubbish compared to the LG IPS (its the "superior" model lots of you have switched to) in my acer, so I swapped that over as well (as a bonus, still have the original one as a spare for the future)
After doing all that, I figured I could never get used to the super rattly trackpad in the Dell, so I fixed that too - not for the faint of heart and requires some careful application of force to remove the top cover.
I fixed the rattle by unclipping the trackpad module, putting a little square of foam in the dome button "hole", and also two very, very tiny foam squares attached with the smallest piece of double sided tape ever used by human kind on the front "lips" of the trackpad, where they sit into the notches in the top cover. Carefully aligned it all up and snapped the clips into place - voila - Firm, non rattle, duller-click trackpad that feels remarkably like the one on my work Mac.
Overall id rate this machine higher than the Acer Nitro - its cooling system is far superior, the chassis is much better build and a lot less flimsy. I actually quite like the firm, solid bulk of it.
Everyone needs to be careful of the plastic clips on the screen bezel - the other half that they clip onto on the back cover of the display are very brittle - two of mine snapped (one on each side) and when reattached it no longer sat flush to the screen surface. I fixed that with (very!) careful application of tiny amounts of superglue.
While I had everything apart I figured I may as well repaste with MX-4 as well. -
I'm using a 2014 Lenovo Y50-70, display SDC5344 glossy, for reference.
Thanks. -
So has anyone found a way to reverse engineer the bios on the dgpu in order to overclock further? My temps stay well below what is normal even with a good overclock (+135/485) (ASIC quality of 88.6). I'm not giving specifics because I have no intention of bragging until I have some results worth bragging about.
Okay, well it isnt super amazing or anything but the GPU idles at 34°C and after two or more hours of 4k gaming the highest it's ever been was 65°C with an ambient temp of 76°F. I can see that further modding the back panel could help to even further drop the temps, but for right now I have 5°-10°C room for more overclocking before reaching thermal saturation under high load scenarios.Last edited: Aug 23, 2016 -
Not really worth the risk for now but if someone figures out a less risky way, then I'm all ears. I also don't go above 65-67C without any throttling (after repasting--it was around 72C tops before).cq842000 likes this. -
As for secureboot, can it be disabled without running legacy CMOS support? Well, nvm it would have to use a different optionrom.
Yeah the two biggest mods are going dual channel since the igpu/dgpu are MUXed, and since the igpu has to directly access the system RAM versus having dedicated frame buffer, the available bandwidth makes a much larger difference than it would with a traditional dgpu only setup.Dual channel and high bandwidth really wake this modest gamer up.
Also repasting is an excellent start because again like you said it helps tremendously. The paste job from the factory was barely adequate due to being slopped on there in heaps. The guys with the MSI lappys with the gtx960m have no problem getting into the bios and overclocking quite a bit further, but the trade off is that the Dell has far superior cooling. So it's kind of a catch 22. -
What about fan control, have we figured that out yet? Or what about RAID 0 between an M.2 SSD and a SATA SSD of the same size? From my understanding, even software RAID is superior to no RAID.

I've had a couple keys come off my keyboard since I received this thing in February after those keys started to get a spongy feeling when typing. Dell is refusing to cover this at all saying it's not an internal problem causing the keyboard not to function properly so my only option is to contact their "Out of Warranty" department since to them. This is the quote from them "I'm pleased to inform you that Dell has a specialized authorized department that takes care of the cases which involve physical/accidental damage, Cosmetic wear and tear or where the parts need to be replaced when there is no Complete Care Cover active on the system. It's Out Of Warranty Repair department."....
Other keys are getting that spongy feeling now especially ones in the middle and at times it makes it harder to press them when I'm trying to type a paragraph in a post like this. I've had keyboards on other laptops from them replaced for keys coming off and not being able to get them back on in the past even my last one right before the warranty went out a couple years ago. They are acting like a keyboard isn't an integral part a person needs for their laptop or desktop to function properly. I'm so frustrated. -
I'll do the mod next month and tell you if there is improvement. It should be as simple as tracing the outline on an Aluminum plate, measure twice, cut once, and use some spray on adhesive, cure for a couple of hours then post my opinion.

Would be extra happy with this laptop if we can crank up the clocks and maximize its potential. Oh well. -
Hey guys, had some misfortune where someone knocked my bag off the table and my screen got cracked. The cracked screen is a BOE that originally came with the laptop. As of now, I'm looking at this as an opportunity to upgrade it like y'all have.
Most of the switches I've seen include the LG LPT156WF6-SPB1 or either Samsung's HL06 and HL02. I'm a little lost at the implication's of the HL06 being 8-bit and the LP's lower response time. Also, it seems that only the LP shares the exact same connector pin as the stock BOE.

Does anyone have advice on where to order them or if they need mention a Dell part number (like C3MWM)? -
For the part numbers, you only need to provide the LCD model numbers. Thats pretty much what it is already. Just make sure you ask for the exact model and not a replacement (one seller sent me an HL02-201 disguised as an HL06, stickers and all--make sure the model number is *printed* onto the back).
Also note that the SPB1 is LP156WF6 (without the T).
