Indeed it's a lot better than Vista. My boot time's is exactly 1 minute now which is amazing compared to my desktop's average of 10 mins lol.

Except I'm running Vista 64 and am getting 5.9 with 4GB ram lol. But as 'shroom said, we can't really trust the the index scores. I noticed my graphics for gaming score went down to 5.2 after running the test again, I haven't changed any settings, wierd lol.

I seem to have stumbled across something weird. It seems my Studio shipped with bios version A07, but on the dell website the latest is A06. Should I download it, or just leave my laptop as is :S

If there's nothing wrong with your computer don't touch the BIOS at all - Flashing BIOSs is risky and should only be undertaken if such an action is necessary!

hmmm interesting... ha we need another way to measure performance. i though of calling dell and asking them whats up with it.. but whatever

In any case I feel retarded for upgrading the ram and getting a lower score I hope windows 7 increases it so I can justify my purchase lol even if performace is great...

I feel the same way. Makes me wish I upgraded the processor rather than the RAM. Little late for that now, though!

I just shrank the 15GB recovery partition with Vista's built in partition thingy. There was only 7gb of it being used, so i made a new partition with 5gb of free space on it. Not a whole lot, but it was just sitting there anyways so it cant hurt.

    hello Mastershroom and Fragilexx,

Today I received another 1080p from Dell. The technician changed it and guess what.... same problem again. blurry, faded, extra white display. Right from the first screen of "Dell logo and F2/F12 options". After booting with Vista also, same problem is there.

Technician had no idea, what may be the problem. So this rules out our first suspicion of malfunctioning LCD. I dont think two successive replacements would be faulty. Then what can be the reason. Now it seems to be a motherboard/GPU problem. Has Dell changed the motherboard in last 3 months on 1555? Seems unlikely to me. But the problem is very much there even after second replacement. My BIOS is A06 and Drivers are latest too.

Guys I am in deep trouble. Please HELP me out. My original 1555 came with samsung 720p and this AUO 1080p is sent as free upgrdae. I really need 1080p for my work needs( Designing softwares 3ds max, Autocad). Do check thumbnail pictures in full dimensions.

    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

I read somewhere about video BIOS. Can this problem have something to do with that?

Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit RTM clean install requires 24 GB disk space to work optimally (minimum 16GB). Then you need more space to install your applications. So normally 30 or 40 GB partition will work very well for Win 7.

Here is a question - the upgraded RAM is 6GB which I'm assuming is both a 4GB and 2GB SODIMM? While you can mix and match sizes and get the full capacity, do they not have to match to work in Dual channel mode? If this is the case, it may explain why your 6GB combo is producing a lower score as it is not performing at full potential. It shouldn't cause you any real problems though as the 6GB is still beneficial if you have a lot of applications running at any one time. I'm not a memory expert so please correct me if I am wrong in this. The performance fall off would only really be noticed if you use a particular memory dependant application I asume.

Thanks, just done that and I've got the settings available now!

This is how much battery life I am getting with the 6-cell battery. Is this normal?

It seems to be going down quickly. Since doing this screenshot, I've now got 80% battery and 2 hr 46 min.

Now its 79% and 3 hr 10 min!

I have the 9 cell so can't compare but will depend on how bright your screen is and I see you also have wireless running which will use up battery. The meter will become more accurate through time as it gets calibrated to your usage.

    hey guys newbie here
what is urs studio1555's radeon 4570 temperature during gaming?
i cannot monitor it through gpu-z, so i use hardware monitor instead & the gpu temperature roughly similar with TZ02
and the temperature will go up to 97 degree celsius during gaming  according to HWmonitor
    is it a bit illogical?
    can someone post urs temperature??
    thanks

I cannot say I have seen any improvements...

Don't worry, it will appear in time.

Ahhh Forgot its 64 bit.. I actually had 32 bit RC on a 20gb partition and I believe a fresh install only used 8 to 12 gbs (cant remember) and since it was just for testing purposes I didnt need to install things like Adobe CS4 or anything..

I just install Chrome and some google apps and then adobe Air and Tweetdeck but other than that I dont need a ton of space for documents and music because I usually just go into the other partition from inside windows 7 and click the file and listen to the song even tho its sucks not getting continious playback.

The site said i needed to at least have 16gb or maybe it was 20 but when it installed it needed now where near that.

It should appear in time, make sure you've installed all previous updates as well. There aren't many benefits to installing it now and for me, it slowed my PC to a crawl for a few days after installing it. So don't worry, you're not missing much.

i would like to know some advise about the 5400 and 7200 harddrive. I've just bought the Studio 15 and i have the Seagate 250gb 7200 harddrive. I have noticed some vibration from the laptop. I would like to know if the 5400 does the same thing or if the vibration is noticable less than the 7200.

and do you notice any real gain of performance? i mean, for gaming and programming?

You will notice vibration most likely as a 7200rpm HDD spins faster than the 5400. The advantage with the 7200 is that data access is faster.

I don't know if others notice this vibration too, but I shouldn't think its anything to worry about.

The HDD spins faster so I would think it would make the laptop vibrate more :)

I also have a Seagate 7,200 rpm HDD, albeit the 320GB model. I only notice very slight vibrations which is normal and nothing to worry about. My desktop's one can be felt by touching the desk that it's on and that's survived for 4 years and still going. ;)

i saw that the Western Digital Scorpio Blue 5400 can be very good agains the 7200 ones. Im sure the 7200 are faster but if the Scorpio blue can do praticly the same at a lower speed, it could be a good choice. What do you guys think?

I'm not sure if this is the appropriate place to ask such a question, but have any of you had any experience with the security lock on your Studio 1555? My new system is a replacement for one that was burglarized from my home (not secured, of course). I want to make sure I take extra careful security measures with my new laptop, and I've heard stories about people being able to just rip the security cable right out. As the security slot seems to be connected to the entire bottom panel, I'd assume this isn't very easy. The lock itself is a coded lock rather than a key lock.

Thank you for any input! Again, if this isn't the appropriate location for this question, just let me know and I'll ask elsewhere. Thanks again!

If someone manages to brute force a Kensington lock out from the slot, it's going to take a large chunk of the chassis with it. Even if someone manages to get away with that (and believe me, the force it would take to rip out a Kensington lock is enormous; tools would definitely be required), then the laptop would be pretty much permanently branded as stolen.

Your average thief is not going to come prepared for cutting through or removing a laptop lock; they generally just grab what isn't anchored down.

Mine is Western Digital 5400 (320GB) and its perfectly fine, no vibrations. Mostly since 7200 is fast it could vibrate. But is it possible that its your fan that is causing the vibration ? I dont think a little vibration is a problem, unless it is really disturbing you.

SP2 was not given by microsoft via update for 64 bit windows due to some problems with its installation via update. They did release it for a while and found lot of issues, and they took it back. Downloading from microsoft.com is also another option, but i think i am not in a hurry for Sp2, i dont think its a major step up. I wish vista occupies lesser hard disk !!!! Microsoft should focus on optimizing OS like OSX10.6 from 10.5 .. they got back 6-9GB hard disk space !!!!

Also true, but your average house burglar isn't going to settle down and chill for two hours trying to crack the code on a laptop lock. He's either going to attempt to brute force it (and most likely fail), or leave it and gank some other stuff that isn't anchored to the ground or furniture.

Keep in mind that a 4 digit combination lock that features only the numbers 0-9 can have 10,000 different combinations. If you did one combination per second it would take you 166 minutes, or about 2 and 3/4 hours. This is assuming you do one combination per second constantly, and don't find the combination until you've been most of the way through.

Realistically it would take a very determined person to crack a 4 digit lock within 2 hours.

This is why a portable dremel with cutoff wheel is a burglar's best friend. Would eat through the cable in under 10 seconds.

In the relatively few experiences I've had with house break-ins (*knock on wood*), thieves generally do not come prepared with Dremel tools.

It's not always over-estimated, just most of the time.

Basically, years ago Dell used to quote a time that they genuinely thought the notebook would get to you by. The amount of customer service issues they got when there were delays caused them to change tactics. Now they give you a date with a margin of error already built in. However, sometimes there can be delays which mean you don't get it until your estimated delivery date, and occaisionally it is after this too. However, these don't happen very often.

It's probably safe to say you will get it early, but be prepared to have to wait the full length of time. Besides, 12 days is nothing. If it's a new model, sometimes you have to wait a lot longer than that; I think my record so far (after 5 notebooks and over 20 desktops from Dell) is 6 weeks. Most of the time though it is not anywhere near that long.

For what it's worth I'm personally a mac user and am quite a fan of OS X!

    Thanks anyway.
