After using this laptop as my main computer for 6 days now, I thought I'd mention some tips for people who are still considering purchasing this laptop:

If you're not planning to do any serious gaming or 3D design, there is no need for the 512MB version of the ATI 4570. Getting the 256MB one is fine for HD movies and Blu-rays etc.

The 6-cell bettery is giving me about 3 hours.

There is very little keyboard flex and it doesn't affect typing at all. I can type at a good speed just like a normal keyboard and overall it feels very sturdy.

I find the build quality to be pretty good. I can't see any obvious defects and the whole thing feels pretty sturdy to me. Of course it's no toughbook but for general use around the home, its fine.

The power adapter is brilliant and much better than other laptops I've seen. It's quite slim (around the size of a portable hard drive) and it has a rubber strap so you can wrap the cable neatly around it and put it in a case etc.

The 1080p screen makes text a bit small, but you can get used to it. Letters are sharp and clear and I'm using it on about 1/3 brightness with no problems. You can always change the DPI setting if you want to compensate but otherwise it offers a lot of desktop space.

Personally, I recommend getting one of the colour upgrades. The Microsatin finish is really nice and will help prevent scratches and smudges from appearing. If you don't feel like paying £30, just wait till Dell offer a free colour upgrade offer.

One thing about this - if you install Windows 7, it seems to know to increase the DPI based on the screen size and resolution so right out of the box, it is much more legible than XP for example so very little tweaking is required.

Yeah I noticed that when I installed the RC. But after a couple of days I found it too big so I changed it back, now I'm used to it.

    Hi all,

I've been running Windows 7 RC 7100 on my 1555 for a week or so and everything seems fine.

Today, I've just noticed that with my Outlook 2007, when new mail arrives, I don't get any visual or audio notifications. I have of course made sure that the relevant boxes are checked.

Has anybody else got the same problem? Any idea how I could fix this please?

Perhaps it's just a glitch with the RC?

    Thank you.

    anyone know why im seeing:
    total installed memory 6gb
    Total available memory 3.15gb

but under system type its says x64 and Im using vista 64bit?

I thought it would only show 3.15 if i were using 32bit windows.. this could explain why im getting a 5.2 (sometimes 5.1) under ram in the experience index. and others with 4gb are getting 5.9 and I have 6gb installed?

You're seeing total available memory as 3.15GB because you are using the rest. The fact that Vista acknowledges the fact that there is 6GB installed means that it sees it all.

Vista might seem not to make the best use of RAM, but in fact it's often better that more of it is used; I mean what is the point in having it if it is left as available memory, i.e. not being used.

The WEI score for RAM is partly related with the amount of RAM available, but also speed of RAM etc. It's not unusual for the same machine to have the WEI score differ a little each time it is run.

You wont get as good a score as someone with 4GB though because one of your sticks is 4GB and the other is 2GB. With the GM/PM45 chipset, the "Dual channels" are only utilised properly for memory modules that are installed in equal sizes. So you will have 4GB that is working in dual channel mode, and 2GB which will be working in non dual channel. It wont make a huge difference, because the series 4 memory controller (included with that chipset) is pretty clever and will allocate the dual channel part accordingly.

Is it uncomfortable to use when it gets that warm? What are you using to check your temperatures?

I'll check my temps tomorrow during a round of Bioshock.

Here were my temps after some BioShock. If anyone is interested I'm averaging 30-35fps with settings as 1600x900, Medium details, VSync off. Vsync on caps at 30fps of course.

Is it normal to feel vibrations on the laptop because of the speakers when sound is playing?

If you're playing music of the HDD well the HDD would be spinning which would cause vibrating.

Also if you play the speakers loud enough vibrations are more than likely.

    Nothing to worry about ;)

    Hey guys,
I was just wondering if anyone knew where to get the IDT control panel so I can get the 5.1 output to work with my 3.5mm jacks on the 1555. I reinstalled windows 7 with the IDT drivers but I cant seem to find anywhere where I can set those jacks differently, I'm assuming its with the control panel, if anyone can help with the 5.1 output it would be greatly appreciated! I've spent hours on google with no luck XP

It's more likely that you'd feel vibrations from your optical drive rather than anything else. You shouldn't feel your HDD vibrate at all. Simple test though; turn the speakers down, do you still feel the vibration? OK, now plug in headphones and turn the volume up, do you feel the vibration? Probably not in both cases.

Also, where is it vibrating? Remember that this model has a sub woofer that will cause some gentle vibrations - though it's not powerful enough to shake much.

    Thanks.
The vibrations are definitely coming from the speakers. I feel light ones when music is playing and somewhat hard ones usually when speech or harder music is playing. It can be felt all over the laptop, but the interesting is that they are lighter on the speakers themselves. The volume is normal, not too high. It is a little bit annoying when my hands are on the laptop.
    I really hope that’s normal.

It seems like it is the subwoofer. The vibrations are as hard as the one from the optical drive on full speed or just a little bit harder.

I have tried replicating this and it does seem to be the Subwoofer.

Does (shake) the case of the lappy when high base tracks are played...

The subwoofer is mounted with rubber spacers on the screws to insulate vibrations and sound and prevent them from transferring to the laptop's chassis. If one of yours is missing or broken, it might be causing the vibrations.

These are my settings. We have the same computer specs except i have the 7200rpm drive and you have the 1080 screen.. The game runs good at 1600x900 but i think that's about the limit. High details are still playable though.

Install all of the drivers for the studio from the drivers and utilities disc , from what i see in the picture you need to install the ati graphics drivers for the 4570
    heres the link for them
    http://support.euro.dell.com/suppor...-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=6&fileid=285816

its an easy fix dont worry :)

As UltraA says, lack of graphics drivers usually causes that kind of behavior: lack of Windows Aero, poor performance, etc.

Was wondering, what graphics drivers are you all using? I seem to have bodged 9.8 to work, but with an old version of ccc. Whats the slickest solution?

I'm using the 9.8 downloaded direct from ATI/AMD - I just run mobility modder on them then installed. Whole process took about 5 mins.

+1. Running 9.8 modded with Mobility Modder. Once you understand the process its very straightforward. I had issues installing 9.7 as well but going to the 9.8 was a cinch.

Temps for what? CPU? GPU? HDD?

If you are talking about CPU, 57 is fine, nothing to worry about. Depends on what CPU you have as to whether it is warmer than usual, also what other configuration you have - i.e. if you have the 4570 GPU then I'd expect some of the heat to dissipate to other components

I just installed 9.8 ATI drivers on my 1555. Ran 3Dmark 05 before and after.

    With the original Dell-Ati Drivers: 7915 3DMarks

With the ATI 9.8 drivers installed: 7964 3DMarks

Quite OK improvement i must say.

That's pretty neat. I've been considering calling about my keyboard as well; the S and E keys click pretty loudly when pressed, even gently. Then again, this backlit keyboard is an added upgrade; the laptop originally came with the unlit keyboard, so Dell wouldn't really be any help. :p

Ah well. If it gets worse, I may just order another one.

i was actually thinking of calling dell and seeing if they would let me upgrade to a backlit keyboard because since i ordered from the business end through my work I was not given the option for a backlit keyboard.

Im also waiting on my 4gb ram stick to make the upgrade from 6 to 8 so that iom running it all in dual channel. its totally unncessary however i figure i can always swith it out if i switch laptops.. still 8gb of ram is extreme over kill im just being compulsive

Send an email to fabio_mejia[at]dell.com. He will be able to set you up with a part order form for the backlit keyboard, which will cost you around $45. It's how I ordered mine.

£495 including VAT and shipping (which was free).

First thing to do was wipe Vista and put a clean install of Win7 on. I would've preferred the 1080p screen, but couldn't justify the huge increase in cost, as none of the Outlet systems currently have 1080p screens, and would've pushed the price up towards £800 for a similarly specced laptop.

When I connect my hdmi cable whilst laptop switched off, when I then switch laptop on it automatically output picture and sound to the tv (I have the tv set to the appropriate channel beforehand). When it's all booted I just have the option of choosing to have the same picture on both the laptop and the external display or on external only.
I then switch off laptop, disconnect hdmi and reboot. It then defaults bcak to normal. I don't have to fiddle with any settings.
