It looks to be a fairly large (stylish?) hinge to give the notebook a little bit of character. Yes, those are screws.
-
I'd wish they could make the entire laptop shell aluminum-ish (or whatever that grey/silver stuff is).
-
I'm not sure, if this was agreed on...but the laptop in the pic is definitively not 13"...it's keyboard is bigger than my dell 9300 17" (with speakers on both sides)...unless the keys are half in size!! So, it's probably the xps studio 16...if at all (because as per original pics it was meant to have a wooden finish on the lid, though i guess that should be configurable, considering it's dell)

Agree with McBrainless; im praying they keep the microsatin finishes. I would never consider buying it if its plasticy and shiny.
However as Jayson mentioned: you have to please the majority and if most people prefer buying a fisher price covered laptop, so be it.
btw, how hard is it to put our microsatin finish on it? -
I recently saw a computer (forgot which brand)
but it had that glossy HP style chassis with those pseudo imprint finish behind a clear plastic shell.. an edge to edge glossy screen.. and now.. glossy keyboards that feel really.. well cheap! I'm really not happy with the way trends are going -

The XPS still uses a range of older Intel processors ranging from the 2.0GHz T5800 to the 2.6GHz T9500, all of which have a TDP of 35W.
The U330 currently offers only one processor- the 2.0GHz Intel P7350. The P7350 is one of Intel's newest processors, which were introduced along with the new 'Centrino 2' platform in Summer 2008. The processors with model numbers starting with "P" are the first Intel processors with a 25W TDP. The lower TDP translates into less power/battery usage, which allows the processors to generate less heat under heavy load than 35W processors. This makes 25W processors ideal for maximizing battery life, especially in smaller, ultra-portable systems!
The U330 offers several other significant benefits- compared to the XPS's Intel X3100 or 128mb nVIDIA 8400M GS, the U330's 256mb ATI Radeon HD 3450 is a substantially better performer. The nVIDIA 8400M is one of numerous nVIDIA graphics cards that have been suffering premature failures at a much higher than average rate!
System memory, or RAM, is another key difference in these two- the XPS utilizes DDR2-667 RAM while the U330 has adopted the newest, fastest and most energy efficient RAM available- DDR3-1066. The faster speed rating, combined with the CPU's identical FSB rating, enables much faster interaction between all system components and the quickest possible access to the system's RAM- despite this speed increase, DDR3-1066 uses 25% power than DDR2, which will extend battery life.
Wireless networking capabilities vary in the XPS model- it has a Dell wireless "g" card standard, Dell wireless "n" as an option or, for a higher price than the Dell upgrade, a choice of Intel 3945ABG or Intel 4965AGN adapters are offered. The U330 features the Intel WiFi Link 5100AGN, which is the successor the 4965AGN. The Intel 4965AGN was the company's first wireless card to support draft-N wireless capabilities, which allowed transfer rates of more than double previous wireless connections. The 5100AGN in the U330 is simply an improved and advanced update to the 4965AGN. Among benefits are great range and faster data transfer rates at various distances from the wireless receiver.
Simply put, the XPS M1330 is built from technolgy that is 12-18 months old, with exception to Intel processor T8100 and higher- which were released on 1/6/08, making them slightly newer at 10 months old.
The Lenovo IdeaPad U330 is based on the new Intel 'Centrino 2' platform. This newer technology allows this notebook to offer superior performance and maximize energy efficiency simultaneously! Battery life will be exceptional compared to the XPS and the P7350 processor, DDR3 RAM and ATI graphics card will deliver performance that the XPS simply can't match!
The Lenovo IdeaPad U330 is your best bet! -
The new CPU's appear to have a higher FSB speed as well (it's 800Hz in the current Dell XPS's whereas the new Centrino CPU's run at 1066Hz).
I'd probably say wait at this stage as well (the XPS M1330 isn't set to be pulled when the new Studio XPS models appear so waiting shouldn't do any harm), though a few things to bear in mind:
The old tech angle may not be that much of an issue. Consider what you need to do with the laptop (the high end current XPS's have enough power to do any intensive task you choose to throw at them). The current XPS line is discounted so you might save money by sticking with the old model.
Style is a reasonable concern, especially given the high retail price point of the Dells. From the looks of things the new Studio XPS line will be weaker on this front compared to the current XPS line.
There may also be a run on the new model which could mean a longer wait for the laptop (Dell seem pretty shaky when it comes to quick turnaround so people suddenly ordering a single line might mess things up). -
allfiredup ... got a lenovo endorsement.. my gosh.. lol.. you should go work for them.. good seller.. but the facts are on the table.. we know lenovo has better specs than the M1330.. but im sure dell will deliver with these new XPS's. Lets wait and see so u can do a speach like that on dells behalf...
-
oh.. just another hint.. we might be seeing 3 new XPS's soon. not 2. 13.3, 15.4, 16.4 (16:9)? .. just a guess.. dont come bashing now. lol
-
Sounds interesting.
I wonder if they'll keep the overall design of the 13.3 and 15.4 ones the same and the new shots that, we've seen are for the 16.4 exclusively...?
Anyways, if there's a better GPU in the 16.4" might go with that one. Otherwise the 15.4" for me... -
Great. One week from the launch date and we still don't know exactly what new models that will be released.
-
yes.. im loving this hype.. lol.. =P
-
-
It better be worth the delay. -
Putting off my purchase of a laptop so I can check these out. Hope it's worth it.
-
maybe dell will introduce the new xps studio line on 11th and on 15th m1530 and m1330 will get refresh...
-
according to the list here in South Africa, 15 November for both the xps 1330 and 1530. Since it is a Saturday, i wud assume only the Monday 17th

A new laptop shouldn't have to include a polishing cloth as a standard accessory! I love my Studio 15 because it doesn't smudge and collect fingerprints like my HP did. Even the touchpad on new HPs looks nasty after a few hours of use...like a kid was playing with it and eating a FudgeSicle at the same time! Yuck! -
Its a bit like an American built car, all shiny bits on the outside but useless on any road with a bend in it -
I have the 1530..so to compare to the new Studio line with these..its going to be pretty sweet!
Cin -
I can`t wait anymore
Hope it is monday.
I waited so long, hope it was worth waiting for it. -
Have just checked the dell website and the Centrino 2 branding is starting to appear on the XPS M1530 config page!
but none of the processors are actually Centrino 2 ie. P9500, P8400.
If you click the centrino 2 logo it loads a pop-up but it is empty (notebook_legend.html??) -
does any one knows when the studio line gets an video card update?

Im new here, but im following this thread for several days.
Does anyone know when Dell will announce the specifications of its new Studio Xps series? I dont mean the official release date that probably is 11/15 or 11/18. Will it be on Monday?
Im waiting for so long and cant expect to call a XPS M1640 mine. -
I doubt we'll know anything before Dell announces them on the 11th 15th or 18th. Or any other date thats been thrown out there
-
ya.. no point asking questions when they going to announce.. we all know one day it will just appear.. for the public ofcourse .. =)
-
I'm amazed how long they managed to keep a lid on things for these models. Other than the slides by Jayson and the image few pages back, there has been no other information of these models. There has been a lot more info about the other Dell models released this year.
-
well and imagine if i decided to not post those slides.. hehe.. you guys would be in a blackout.. it was iminent though
-
The XPS 16 gonna be able to handle gaming to a decent agree or no?
-
oh yes it will... hybrid sli.. pretty well i think.. just looking at the performance of the new macbooks..
-
we will see this week i think...
-
-
have u checked the reviews of the macs?
it seems u can use the 9400m + 9600m graphics.. SLI.. get it? improves a hell lot -
-
-
yes very interesting stuff..
read more here
http://www.nvidia.com/object/hybridsli_notebook.html
there are two links, 1 to a tech brief pdf and another to a video for those who dont like reading =) -
oh and i forgot..
we should be seeing systems in the future with 3 graphics... probably in the gaming rig version of the XPS
one integratedGPU and 2 discreteGPUs... making this hybrid experience a threesome.. pretty ausome.. -
oh yes.. and for those who still doubt the slides.. check what i posted in august for the vostro line
http://img402.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dell1qb2.jpg
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=291471
if u check on the roadmap there is a vostro 220 desktop pc.. which did come out in october like the roadmap says.. and u can also see the similarities between this roadmap and the xps one.. in terms of design. =) -
