qaz, you're getting very annoying now... I think you won't listen anyway and I'm sure Jayson could have defended himself here, but oh well...

Back when Jayson first announced the November date, NOBODY would have guessed a November release / refresh of the XPS line, everyone would have assumed that Dell would update their premium line a lot faster. Yet Jayson called it and now before the 15th passed (the only date for XPS he ever mentioned I believe), he called a delay. It would have been less convincing if he would have waited for the 15th to pass.

Also, there are already products from his slides on the first page of this thread that nobody else ever mentioned before him and that DID get released, like Studio desktops and new XPS desktops, be it a little later than in his roadmap, but really, products get delayed all the time.

Also, I think he was the first one to mention the exact names 'Studio XPS 16' and 'Studio XPS 13' and at least the first one already turned up on Dell's web site in a graphics driver readme.

Lastly, he did upload the new roadmap already, check a few pages back.

The slides provided by Jayson only said November. It wasn't until a couple of weeks into September this site picked up the actual dates (however I can't see the dates at the moment). These dates seemed to be a week early for nearly all models listed (see this post).

I think that slides are valid... because dell rep i talked to, told me that the new xps has been already delayed for several times so i think jason's slides are not fake!! But Jason didn't mention the names of the new xps... Because the prototype i've seen is called xps studio 1640.. And the guy from dell told that it is called xps STUDIO because it will mid line between xps and studio... And also that there wouldn't be any upgrade or refresh of xps m1730!! But its just a rumour from dell which i heard... im just saying what i heard... ;)

i've been following this thread silently for a while now
im slowly becoming more convinced that qaz/bonymjose is a 12 year old
he rants about other people's misunderstandings
while brushing off his alienware misconception with "Whatever. They'll be ridiculously overpriced anyways" and making the obviously subjective statement about his larger acer screen being better than smaller screens
why do you care so much?
state your opinion without flaming or disparaging anyone, and perhaps i'll then be inclined to take you seriously

someone mentioned that the new xps line is supposd to be a mid line between xps and studio.

What exactly does that mean? a better looking studio with a terrible gcard?

Yep, but technically the current xps'/studios already have terrible graphics cards, so its hardly unexpected that the new ones will too.

Personally I can't see the logic in a 15 inch with a high end 8800 or 9800 gtx, whats the point? - A portable laptop, yet its tied to a wall socket, seems to me a no-brainer.

I could see the logic behind a 17 inch with sli 9800's or something, from the point of view of wanting to go to lan party's or the like without lugging a whole desktop, but definitely not a 15 inch.

In my experience I use laptops on mains power almost all the time - and I still want a small form factor for portability. It is different strokes for different folks.
When I was in China I hauled laptops from cafe to cafe to make use of free wireless. Most cafes have ample power points there (not like the UK where they seem to think that allowing you to sit with power and free wireless will cost them business not gain them business).
Also, my son often takes the laptop to his friends house. A small machine is also move convenient for use on planes etc. Plus you can have a big monitor at home to really get the pixels when you want to game.

You said several times that discount have nothing to do with the introduction of the new Xps line but:

    1) We know that the old 1530 is no longer in production.
    2) The new ones are ready (different people said that).
    3) The actual discount (xps annual winter savings event) is VERY interesting (at least for me, here in Italy we don't have free upgrade to Blu-ray for example :p ) and I don't know if discount like this are frequent.

For this reasons I could think something will happen, what do know think?

P.s. Do you think Dell could have so much stock to explain two more months delay?

I suppose I was thinking more along the lines of those "hardcore gamer types" without considering all the varioius users.

Over here its the same as the uk, you walk into a cafe and the only wall socket in the room has an appliance plugged into it. It's kind of funny that none of the coffee shops have caught on to the idea of supplying power points, regardless of the fact that half their customers are sitting there with lappies and pda's in front of them.

Thats why I chose this one, its light enough to carry about and last a good 4-5 hours, then for gaming I use my desktop.

I think you have trouble reading. There is always a "sale" ALL of the time. One ends and another begins. There rarely isn't some type of "sale" or deal. In almost every store there is some type of different sale or deal every week or on some interval. That does NOT mean a new product gets released at the end of every sale. You really need to listen more as this has been stated at least 40 times in this thread.

i don't think dell is waiting for intel i7 processor since this processor won't even be official out until tomorrow. ****, maybe dell can just refresh the current xps 1530 with intel i7 processor and add'l backlit keyboard, and put better graphic card on it, i will go get it :D

With the advent of switchable graphics, I hope they put a 9650M GT GDDR3 in their new laptop :) but I feel I'm just setting myself up for some FAIL. 55nm, 23W TDP, faster than (Apple's) 9600M GT GDDR3 - a winning combo! On battery, they can use Intel's GM47 (still prefer Intel's solution despite more powerful GMAs, ie. 9400M G or HD 3200).

Unfortunately Core i7 is for desktops only. The notebook version will be out towards the end of summer 2009, but its questionable whether its worth the wait. They may be powerful, but they will consume almost double the power of today's intel processors. Say goodbye to your battery... at least that's how I justify it to myself that I can buy a new notebook in the next month or so.

as i am reading about intel i7, that processor is quite different than the current core 2 duo, basically they took away the fsb, but use something else intest, qip or something, and uses L3 Cache and support ddr3 memory, I guess I will wait and get a desktop in the mean time, lol. hey, the good thing is that windows 7 will probably be out this time next year, lol

Arrg, why are they segmenting the segments?!? Seriously, why did this have to be separate from the other studio's? So this officially makes for 5 different product lines?

Inspiron-low end (if there are any mid-range configs now, I guess they will disappear )

    Studio- Mid-range

Studio XPS (one model for now?!?)- upper mid-range

    XPS Premium-High-end entertainment desktops

    XPS Gaming-Gaming obviously

Yes, the "Mid-Ranged" Inspirons like the 1520 and 1720, both with 8600M GT and a T9300 2.5GHz processor are in fact long gone from Dell's website. Glad that I upgraded my 1720 manually and everything else. I was dropping by this thread hoping to see a new XPS refresh. I plan to sell my 1720 and change to Studio XPS but... Well it has yet to be launched... Sigh... Gotta wait.

    Its not actually free.

Go to Dell Home/Home office section and customize a 1530.

This is having 4GB RAM by default. Add 500GB HDD and Blu-ray drive. An identical config for the 1530 with FREE blu-ray & 500GB HDD will cost the same(by default the free offer system comes with t5800 process, 8400 graphics etc. So, need to change processor, graphics etc in any one of the system to make them identical).

So, winter sale is just a marketing trick. Guess dell is offering it only in places where people can be fooled easily.

I personally think it's going to be a while until a new XPS line is announced (as in a few months or more). I mean, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense with the technology out right now, and announcing it this late in the season seems odd, even if Christmas is right around the corner.

Like I've said, though, we'll see if Jayson is right eventually. I've got no high hopes but at the same time I have no reason to doubt him. Don't see any reason for him to make all this up and waste his own time.

I agree with Ayepecks. I guess Dell thought they could get it out of the door before or around mid November and now that they didn't make it, they probably thought: now it's too late, plan B: we'll sell what we have now, release Studio XPS notebooks after the holiday shopping season.

But surerly now is the best time for selling mid/low range laptops? People buying presents for friends, realtives etc.

Other than that I assume the only big selling period would be before students are starting school, college around september october.

Dudes, Dell needs new laptops now. Why would they wait? The next big thing is Nehalem quad core processors in fall 09, then dual core in early 2010. That is a long time to wait.

They do need new laptops now but I think they already missed the boat. Sony, HP, Apple, Lenovo, and even Gateway all have moved forward. I think Dell is just hurting a bit and quite frankly it's unusual for them to be behind the pack on things like this right?

I always thought they were one of the first. Oh well...things change. I was waiting for a Studio XPS for myself but I did help purchase an Inspiron for my neice oh well and she got the latest Inspiron with deep discounts. I think it will suit her needs enough.

It's just ashame what has happened to Dell.

I tried to get something from a Dell chat agent in UK.
When I asked about new XPS models and when would they be released he said that he knows something about them and if they would be released then it would be next year. Since it would take time etc. Any way, I got the idea that he didn't know very much about any new XPS systems, then again. Maybe he did and they really are having some problems and are going to release them next year. If so, then i might not wait that long, unless we have the specs in the near future and it's really worth waiting for....

Dell can't release anything the industry hasn't, and at this rate by the time the Studio XPS notebooks do launch with its now stale hardware it'll be distinctly consumer grade and entirely forgettable. Two things that this entire new line isn't supposed to be.

There is literally nothing to wait for in the short term now, so you have nothing to lose by buying something else. Dell have had plenty of time to formally announce this gear (if only for the loyalists!) and 'prosumer' or consumer you owe them nothing.

Dell can reclaim a lot of market share by releasing similar specs to everyone, and attaching on a price that undercuts everyone.

However, to do that, they'd need to at least announce something to make people hold off on buying other units. Without any concrete information to the public, the majority of people who do care would just end up spending money elsewhere.

I remember when the E4300 was slated for release, the news kept me anticipating things, and the specs looked good. The price was a total dealbreaker for what you'd have to pay though. If Dell could promise a price in advance along with specs, I'm sure that many consumers would be more than willing to hold onto their money and wait for a release rather than shop elsewhere.

It's just bad advertising on their part really. The fact that we're still going off of "rumors" and "leaked slides" without a news release from Dell is rather disheartening. At this point, I'm sure even just a small, very vague news release from Dell about these units would see some people waiting for them anyways.

I couldn't agree more stranger, but what really screws my noodle, is that Dell apparently don't.

Throw us a bone Dell!
