Hiya folks, I've been quietly following this thread for a while as I too is in need of a new laptop. I'm not in a rush to get one, but getting one soon is more convenient for me. I heard news on Dell releasing two new desktops the 'Studio XPS' and the 'XPS 730x' with Corei7, weird to name a desktop range the same as their laptop range. They won't be due till 200 Nov and Dec, yes one year later.

Now i'm not a pro on marketing or releases of new technology, but if they just announced the new desktop range with their specs and release dates and the Studio XPS laptops havn't even been announced yet. Does that mean the laptop will come out after the desktops? Which is late 2009 or perhaps 2010?!

    *sigh* Dell is so mean.

Yea, Dell is weird in that way. I don't really get it either.

My only guess is that, if they don't say anything until they're 100% sure they're ready, then there's no way for them to be wrong about releases/pricing/expectations/complaints. >_>

Then again, what gets consumers and keeps em coming back for more is always "the next best thing around the corner". If they don't toss us anything... how are we supposed to know if they have an interesting product to buy? :p

I'm not sure what you're talking about, JBean. If you look on dell.com, the Studio XPS and XPS 730x desktops are available for order today, with the new Core i7 chips.

I'm holding out hope for the release of the Studio XPS notebooks before January.

Dell was quick on the draw for the i7 chips, why couldn't they do the same for Montevina?

...maybe they wanted the Studio XPS desktop out the gate before the laptop?

I wonder if they had to switch their MOBO stock over to new MOBOs or if the MOBOs they'd been using had i7 compatibility all along. Then again... the E4300 is a Centrino2 unit which means they have Centrino2 stocks...

...yea... I haven't a clue atbnet, other than wanting to push the Desktop out the gate first... but if I were Dell, I'd push both Studio XPS desktops and laptops out simultaneously.

Yeah they'd have to use new mobos because i7 uses a whole different socket. They do have them, I guess the business line just comes first.

What I wonder is how this fits in with regulations in countries like the UK. If I remember correctly, to declare a product is being sold with a certain discount requires it to have been sold without the discount for a given time period prior to the sale. If that is the case then there might be gaps between discounted sales and a danger that people will unwittingly buy at a higher price.

Ohhh haha, sorry guys I read the news article wrong, should be this Nov and Dec instead. Well that should bring a sparkle of hope for the laptops.

Just a note to add for people who can't wait and just going to get current dell laptop, I was checking out UK's deals of days promotions and it's cheating customers!

I saw a promotional discount thingy for a m1530 for £899 which was supposedly £200 cheaper than normal (which turns into £999 when in customise mode, don't know why, maybe dell being sneaky). I suggest not to get it, get a better spec laptop in the normal customisable purchasing way that's the same price, yes the same! Maybe dell trying to get rid of certain stocked parts hmmm.

It might make sense for the new i7 desktops to take precedence over the new laptops, but then who knows.

I personally hope dell releases the xps 16 soon since then there will be accessories for the new xps 16 which will probably fit my fw.

I have to ask, but what makes this new XPS Studio line of upcoming laptops so enticing to you guys? It's probably going to be some time before it comes out. So far I have read that they will come out but they are also in post-prototype stage. It takes about a year if not more just to develop a laptop and one that is appealing.

I'd say just go with a different brand for the horse power, otherwise the best thing right now is the Montevina Studio Laptops OR XPS Desktops.

Maybe, it's the intrigue of not knowing vs. wanting to know! Also the hints, *bits and pieces* of information..of what potentially could be ~ that get's everyone on this *euphoria* of wanting to know, and wanting it *now* ;)

IDK..but I will continue to just wait it out til that *big picture* of what everyone is waiting, is sure thing! :D

What I want in a laptop is:

    15.4'' 16:10 (WUXGA) or 16.4'' 16:9 (1080p) LED display,
    Montevina chipset,
    DDR3 RAM,
9600m GT DDR3 or equivalent, preferably hybrid graphics with 8400m or x4500,
    backlit keyboard.

I believe that the only notebook on the market now that fits these requirements is the Macbook Pro, which is about $2200 with AppleCare.
According to Jayson's slides, the Studio XPS 16 will fulfill all of these specifications, most likely at a significantly lower price than the MBP.

If I'm wrong and there is currently a notebook out there with these specs at a reasonable price, I'd love to know about it.

Tomorrow would be a nice day for an announcement. I went to the Apple store in the Menlo Park Mall today (NJ) and took a long look at the new MBP. Come on Dell, you're pushing me to buy my first Mac. Give me another option this week so I have something to be thankful for next week on Thanksgiving. Then again, given the complaints I've read about recent Dell notebooks on this forum including the XPS models, I might be better off with the MBP despite the minor transition issues.

    MSI GX400
    14'' 2.2kg (4.8lb)
    9600m gt ddr3
    3Dmark06 = 5800 !!!

Gonna wait for the next geforce mobile generation 10 to buy a dell...

The next geforce gen will be 200. As in GS280M, GT280M and GTX280M.

    I think.

Nice score, beats my 9700M. Stupid drivers.
Though I think 3D06 isn't accurate for mine, I'm playing everything maxed at WUXGA fine though, so don't always trust a synthetic benchmark.

At least Jayson could up that TIer 2 Roadmap that he claims says the new notebooks are delayed until Jan.

Just been reading some posts and like from what I have read the XPS Studio should be a top-end laptop. Has the style of the Studio and the performance of the XPS. Reading the slides to its says "Hybrid SLI" which means to me its like now nearly in direct competition with the MacBookPro...if it ever comes out.

So just wonder where people are getting the middle range stuff from?

    Cheers

I think the middle range thing is just wishful thinking so we don't have to pay a gigantic premium for the good stuff... lol.

IMO, Studio XPS will be like the top top top brand they'll have. PREMIUMS GALORE. T_T

Converted to CDN... That's roughly $1200-$1700 I'd say. Not terrible. However, that pretty much puts their price range right at Sony's price range too for similar performance.

I'm starting to get the feeling that there really isn't any "competition" in the notebook market. It's more, "hey everyone, lets all sell our laptops at this price!", kinda thing. I'd personally like to see Dell pull the rug from under everyone's feet and undercut everyone's prices.

    ...lol... like that'll ever happen.

Well they are competing with Sony so it only makes sense to have similar notebooks for similar prices. They have lower end notebooks for a lot less.

I'm really tired of waiting for the studio xps.
What about the LG Support/Service? Any expierences?

ifsh, I don't think that will be possible.

The Intel 5300 wireless card I believe is designed for the Montevina chipset/mobo. It might fit... but likely wouldn't be compatible. Don't break your new lappy. >_<

It's a hybrid SLI, you aren't going to see pure SLI graphics like the 1730 currently can use. Why couldn't you have them in midrange?

The XPS isn't a good laptop. It's not a "deal" if they are selling an out dated product at the prices of current laptops. IMO you can get an HP probably for the same price and get all new stuff instead of a product that's been out and uses old parts.

I'm sorry..I have to chime in here. I have the XPS 1530...In fact, I have had it for almost a year. I have had one problem with it, and that was repaired rather quickly by OnSite Service. The 1530 is my first lappy and, serves it purpose of power, and reliability for me..over and over!

The XPS 1530 may be an older model (really, it will be nearly a year old in December)...but it's a fantastic laptop. ;)

I think you could poll most of the users here on NBR, that actually own a XPS 1530 whether they are happy or not, and the answer will be Yes.

There are some good deals right now with the 1530! It's when you find that deal, and your actually acting on it ~ and purchasing before it expires that makes it a *great* deal.

I guess what I'm trying to say is..if you don't own a 1530, and don't know how it works *hands on*..why knock it down? :)

If the OP can still get a deal on the 1530, and doesn't want to wait for future model releases, I say go for it!

    That's just my opinion!

    Cin ;) :)

thank you tential and cin' both for your comment :) I actually bought an xps 1530 last year around christmas for $1500, sold it for $1400 on sep. this year, and ordered another one on sep. then returned it because there was something wrong with it. I will wait and see when I received the new one I ordered last night, and see if it works fine. I just can't resist that deal last night, configured with t9300, 320gb 7200 HD, 256mb video card, bluetooth all that for $1200, then $100 for taxes, total comes out to be $1300. the only thing i didn't like is that dell wireless card instead of intel wireless card, but i think i can get the intel wireless card online somewhere for $40 and put it in myself :)

i guess i can wait two more years and then get myself another upgrade with the new OS with new intel i7 processor, then pass down the one i ordered last night to my dad, lol

also, does anyone know if intel turbo memory card will work on the xps 1530?

If you spent only $1200 on it before taxes how did you save almost $700 with a 30% off coupon? You'd have to spend at least $1600 on it to save that much.

It would have to be more like $2300 to get $700 off and then the final total would have to be 1600 before taxes. What I'm saying is how did you manage to get $700 off of $1900? That's much more than 30%. If you got other deals along with the 30% then what else where they? The 30% off can not be combined with any other offers.

hey, worked for me when i tried it, lol, then it doesn't work any more, probably dell found out about it. I got 30% off coupon, along with $100 saving on the video card and $100 off with the HD discount already existed on dell's website, i guess the system I configured was like $2000, got about $600 off for that 30% discount coupon. (something like that, can't remember the exact numbers). I tried it a couple of times again today, it won't let me use it again with that 30% off coupon.
