Actually, they mean 21 working days, so 5 working days a week makes it 4 weeks :)
I got confused too when the guy kept on insisting 15 working days = 3 weeks. Then he told me about their theory on that.

Congrats rhn :) Your post gives me hope :)

Yeah I noticed that the 1720 does not come with any sort of travel case or bag on DELL India.... I could configure a 1720 with T7100, 2 GB RAM, 250 GB HDD and Geforce 8600 for around 70k bucks now....

    Guess what! :D :D

My laptop is delayed for 10 days, it'll now arrive on the 15th! So, I called DELL, they're giving me 1 GB RAM and a carry case for free, for this delay. And the compensation for the GDDR2 on 8600M GT and the 5400RPM drive will be dealt with later. :)

Cant we cancel our order without a genuine reason?

I wanted to cancel my order, reason being i see a better promotional product in Vostro series now, which was not available when i ordered mine.
I called up CSR, she said cant cancel the order cause its already shipped.
WTF???? Is that my problem that i cound't foresee or Dell's problem that they come up wid these crazy promotions and **** around wid ppl who already placed the orders.

Can anyone shed some light on how can i change my order atleast?

I hope they dont increase the price again for atleast a week till my order gets placed...

yay! i just checked the site. they are including 120 GB HDD without any extra bucks, which would have cost 1200~1400 in place of a 80 GB previously! I have a quote from them already, can I bargain? I havent paid so far! So guess I havent 'ordered' yet!

Mask, Bargining usually works.. As i did for me.
But the time usually matters a lot. if its a month end and the Sales rep dont have their nos(minimum sales/month) then they tend to compromise on the margin that they have on every system they sell.

I will be getting it on the coming Thursday, with a lot of IFs and BUTs. Anyways, I got an extra GB of RAM and a Carry Case for this delay. I asked them to change the earlier compenstion, as I didn't want that **** now. I still have the GDDRII vs GDDRIII and the 9-cell battery sticking out and and 5400RPM on the hard-disk cards to play! :D :(

I ordered via card. I have also ordered an LCD previously through a CC. You have to give all the details but they are not misused. I haven't had any problems at all using cards and find them a little simpler for these types of transactions.

Well, Silas, seems like you and I are in the same situation, with you getting compensated much more :) Today I was told that it might come out of customs tomorrow, but then after invoicing and delivery, it'll get to me by Wednesday next week. Anyway, I finally just asked how am I going to be compensated and now I am getting a free laptop case.

Question regarding your free upgrade of ram: I had that option too, but since I already had 2GB, I felt that its not worth it. So did you have 2GB in your original order and now are getting 3GB, or was it 1GB and now its 2?

Mine is out of customs today, just like yours (would be)! :D The day I've been given is the coming Thursday! I didn't ASK about what compensation I'd be given, I TOLD them what I was looking for.to him. I refused to take the $10 mouse etc. I talked to a supervisor, and I talked to him and the CSRs with respect and real humility, and he asked me what I was looking for. I said I was looking for a procesor upgrade. He said he didn't have any processor lying free. He said he can give me a carry case, I said add an extra GB of RAM, and I'll let this delay case go out of my concern. He agreed.

Yes, I have 2 GB in my original order, and now it makes it 3GB. I have a 1.5 GHz Core2Duo processor! :( So 3 GB >> 2 GB. Or if not, something is better than nothing.

The thing is, they put a 2GB configuration as 2x1GB modules. So they will have to put in one 2GB module for you and one 1GB module. A 2GB module is much costlier than a 1GB module. So I don't know how they are giving you so many things, but seems like you're real lucky.

And yeah, I didn't speak to the manager or anything.
Btw, are you getting these upgrades from Customer Care or the CSR?

P.S. Did they tell you today that it's out of customs? Or did they inform you yesterday only? Man, I am thinking of calling them up and asking for something else. I had asked for the Dell BT headset, but she said that they don't have it.

I don't care how costly it is to them, I asked for it, and they gave it to me, along with the carry case. I will get the warranty later when I ask them why I have been given the GDDR2 graphics card.

I talked to the Customer Care people. And then asked for their manager, who is now in contact with me directly, via phone and e-mail.

They told me to call and ask for the order status on Friday (today), as this was the day they had been informed by the customs that their goods will be out. I called them this morning, and they told me it is out of customs! :D

Just refuse to take the freebies that they give, and be firm on something that you want, and call for the manager. Always maintain your calm.

I am on the phone with Customer Care right now and I got them to give me the ram upgrade as well :D The service engineer will come when the laptop is delivered and he will do it right there and then.

It is out of customs as well. I have a tentative delivery date of Thursday as well :)

So all is good, I guess. Dell really knows how to take care of its customers.

I have been finally given the discounted price for the laptop in my signature and it seems to come around Rs.56k.... Since I'm out of station currently I will be giving the cheque on Monday and the order should hopefully start getting processed on Tuesday....So adding roughly a month's time or so I'll be getting my notebook by October 2nd week or so.... :D

I got mine today after 30 days wait. So far so good. Dont see any graininess and no noise at all. May be I need to look and listen closely

How do I see who is the manufacturer of my LCD?

Oh by the way Dell delayed my order twice so I managed to get the following "goodies" from Dell

3 Yrs CompleteCover Upgrade from 1 year CompleteCover
    1 GB PEN Drive
9 Cell Batt instead of 6 Cell
    Dell Wireless Mouse

No I didn't speak to the manager. I just spoke to the customer care rep. Yeah, mine reached India on the 18th or something and 20th it went into customs. Ideally, I should have got it by the 28th or so.

Seems like the Malaysia factory is producing good units only, so I guess we can rest easy that we will get a good piece.

Frankly, this is the longest I have ever waited for a tech product. The LCD which I ordered OTOH came in 2 weeks. But Dell sure tries to make it worth it to wait :)

I finally got my system after disturbing last 10 days on 6th sept. little more a month. The customer care fellows were saying about compensation discussion after once i receive it. Which on the day of delivery struck to me that this is some thing to be finalised before receiving . Hence i managed to get a compensation option for RAM upgrade (currently 1 GB) and Speaker with subwoofer out of five options offered by CC executive...

I hope this will make my system more worth .....

Till now ,didnt get much time to work on it. but overall i am impressed with the laptop. and am unbale to find any major problems.

i think before receiving the system, one shall finalise compensation/financial issues. coz. before delivery ,you always have the option to not to receive delayed delivery laptop.

Well I received my laptop on Sunday, the 9th. But as I was told not to open the box, it kept lying there and driving me mad! On Monday morning I called them and told them to send the engineer. The engineer was also supposed to do the ram upgrade, but the girl I had spoken to was on leave so the ram upgrade couldn't be done.
They told me they can send someone tomorrow but I knew I would go mad if I didn't open it today so I just told them to send an engineer today and then send someone else for the ram upgrade.

Anyway, they send someone to check on the system to make sure there are no physical damages, etc.

He came an hour early and opened it. I've been on the system setting it up since then.

I must say, I am loving it more and more as I use it. At first, I didn't like the TrueLife screen as I am not used to a glossy screen. But you get used to it and now I find it much nicer and brighter than the other laptops.

My screen is an LG/Philips screen. It isn't grainy (as far as I can tell), however there is some light bleed at the bottom, but its tolerable.

The headphone jack does not have any problem neither does it suffer from the CPU whine problem.

The battery is a bit loose but its not a big deal.

Overall, the build of the system is top notch. Very quiet and nice. And fast!

The keyboard is a joy to type on and I am typing from the laptop right now.

The speakers are simply amazing for laptop speakers. They are very loud with no distortion and do not sound like laptop speakers at all.

Oh, as for the earlier speculations, I guess they DO deliver on Sunday as well :)

Sorry to hear about that Silas, what kind of finance hold do they mean? I don't understand why they would delay your order further..

mask: Actually, I could have opened it but Dell makes you check the Basic Install compulsarily, so they have to do it anyway. They just do it so that if there is any physical defect, the engineer can tell them immediately and they send you a replacement. So while its a bit irritating, its ok.
All the engineer did was open up the box, start the machine, tell me what all the ports and stuff was, told me my machine config, then said that this is what Dell calls as installation :D hehe..

Yeah, I know, I am lucky to get an LPL screen. To check the screen, go to

    Device Manager
    Monitors
    Generic PNP Monitor
    Details
    Hardware IDs

I am just about to call and ask about my ram upgrade.

PhoenixAG I believe you must be from Bangalore.... So what if the shipping address is to a city where DELL does not have its office and cant send its service engineers to check the system ?
