No, not Vista Basic. I have Home Premium on it. Basic Install means that they "install" the laptop at your site (home). So they try and make it "easy" for youIf you go and configure any Dell laptop online, you will notice this option. I tried unchecking it but the site didn't let me. They charge about Rs. 800 for it too!
I am from New Delhi. I asked the CSR this same question and he told me that I don't have to worry at all, being from a major Metro. But even if I was in a small village, a Dell engineer would reach there. hehe..that's what he said..but I would double check just to make sure, as CSRs say all kinds of false things to sell a product.
-
Hmm I've given my shipping address to Coimbatore.... I dunno how they are gonna handle it.....
-
hey, i can uncheck that 'basic install' option - it will save me Rs 864!
Phoenix, from your experience, is that even necessary? means, cant I do it myself? -
-
Yeah, even I could uncheck it.
But it doesn't let me continue to build the system after I uncheck it. It is not necessary but Dell adds it as a necessity to make sure at the beginning that consumers get a good system. I guess its good on their part in a way to check the system when the person gets it.
But yeah, you do have to pay this Rs. 864 "tax"
I don't think they should have any problem in delivering it to Coimbatore. Delivering it is the least of Dell's hassles and is usually really fast. What is slow are the customs delays, manufacturing, etc.
I think their partner in Delhi is Wipro, as the guy who came was from there.
Ash: I would really recommend you order some sort of Complete Care with your laptop, as it gives a lot of peace of mind knowing that you are protected against all failures and mishaps. -
Hi Phoenix, How much did you pay for your machine?
-
I paid around Rs. 73,000 but that's with a 3yr complete cover warranty. Without that, your total should be around Rs. 63,000, but I think the price of it has come down a bit, so maybe Rs. 60,000 or so, without any addl warranty.
I also got a Targus wireless mouse, a Belkin sling bag free with it.
I am supposed to get another laptop case and a ram upgrade free also, due to delays. However, now I am not sure whether I should get the ram upgraded from 2GB to 3GB, as 2GB is dual channel and hence a bit faster. -
yeah, you shudnt go for a 1+2 ram... mysuggestion, get the creative x-fi card (think thats what its called), if they sell that in India. its 65$ on the US site
-
I think 3-yrs completecover is way too expensive for me to afford right now.... Isnt it possible to renew the warranty if required at the end of the initial 1-year ?
-
hi guys..
found out whts a 'finance hold"?? -
I am supposed to get a call-back at 6 pm today to get an ESD!
****ing useless mother****ing *******s. I hope they go and **** themselves ****ing incompetant ****s. 30 days and counting.
-
Anyone who've got their notebooks, which screens have you got??
The service tag for my notebook (Inspiron 1720) is RY577. What is yours?
The wait and the delays and the Customer Care experience has been aweful, and I don't want to go around again for the screen. -
-
is dell the same in US too ?..or just in india -
Hmm thru which method did you two do the payment ?
-
yes i heard that you can get additional warranty just when ur warranty is about to run out... i did not wait for the engineer... no probs there.
-
Yeah, I don't think you should have a problem getting the warranty later. You should ask them to confirm, though.
We don't get the Creative X-Fi in India, but we do get the Creative Audigy upgrade, which I have heard is just sofware.
I don't know how to check the part no of my screen. Anyway, I don't think you should be posting your service tag over here on the forums.
Even if you open it without waiting for the engineer, it should be ok. The reason I waited was because I had been promised that the upgrade of the ram would be done right then and there as well.
Btw, I think you guys might be having problems because you made a payment other than a CC. I paid with a CC and did not experience anything like that. -
i think i will use the CC as well.. guess you can trust Dell
-
I paid using a cheque but I still do not understand what they mean when they say FINANCE HOLD.... It may be that the Finance Department here in India would not have yet received the payment details and so the delay....
-
I paid through CC but had problem as they didn't get the approval for 20 days and they don't process unless they got a approval. I gave my cc on July 17 and it got processed on Aug 7th and recieved the lappy on sep 6th . May be it just happened with me !!!
-
-
can anyone tell me abt the CC process?
and do you need to also give the CVV number printed at the back? -
Regarding CC Problems: Yes, you do give the CVV number. At least, I think so. I cannot remember now, whether I did or not. I also did not face any problems as I have a very high credit card limit. Sometimes, CC companies specifically stop a payment till they get authorization from the customer or otherwise, in the case of large payments. That's why Dell specifically tells you sometimes to call up your CC company and tell them to expect a payment for Dell.
I know about dual channel. Having 2 1GB sticks in a dual channel config would be faster than having a 2GB and 1GB in a 3GB config. However, as you rightly put it, 3GB is overall better as Vista uses more ram and the graphics card and also use the shared ram. So the more the better. -
Actually if you put in a 2 Gb and a 1 GB pair it will still run in assymetrical Dual Channel and which will in all ways be faster than merely having 2x1GB in Symmetric Dual channel.....
-
Here is the problem
-
DDDC took the cheque from me. They made the payment to DELL's account via CitiBank. But apparently DDDC were supposed to give a slip to Citibank as well, for confirmation, which they didn't. So it is stopping the delivery of my order.
I hope DELL ****ing ****s itself as soon as I get my machine. I have been calling the clueless ****ing idiots twice everyday. Everytime a new excuse. Now this new incompetent idiot` Devi, a "case manager working dedicatedly on my case", promises me that "she will do anything to help me".**** off already.
I am so angry! It's just a matter of time before I snap and this Devi faces the burnt. -
DDDC ? What is it ? Are you talking about DTDC ?
And BTW my EDD is 04-Oct-2007 -
Hi, I noticed that u have ordered the following config for Rs 56K:
Ordered for Rs.56503
Inspiron 1520 Ruby Red Powered by
Core 2 Duo T7100
Vista Home Premium
15.4" WXGA+
2GB DDR2 SDRAM
256MB 8600M GT
160GB 5400 RPM SATA HDD
Intel Draft-N
While configuring on Dell's site, the above works out to to almost 67k. How did u get the deal that u got? Thanks for ur feedback. -
Yeah the actual price is around Rs.66k but I have a friend of mine at DELL who is buying the laptop for me through Employee Purchasal and so he gets a discount on the actual price.... Hence the around Rs.10k discount
-
stop bragging ash :x
but congrats anyway -
Here's a new excuse!
I called my "case manager", a ***** named Devi. She told me, that the cheque doesn't have their location. I said so put it yourself. They said this is illeagal and ****. I said you just have to put a damn location, just put it. She said she can't. I said I can send an approval, on mail and a written as well, do it. She said she can't. Now, the useless ****ing *******s have asked me to send a DD tomorrow. There is a Saturday and Sunday in between. They will recieve the DD on Monday, and I will get my notebook on....here's the kicker, the next Friday!
I think I have to show that I am not the one to bend over as well. I am asking for a new processor and the three year warranty **** with Complete**** as well.
Also, if they don't give it to me by the next Friday, I'm going to the consumer court and dragging each of the illiterate CSRs and their equally imcompetent managers as well while at it. -
Actually, they are right. If they did that for you, it would be illegal and you would have the right to take them to court for it. It's quite unfortunate that this has happened with your case.
However, if you do send a DD, make sure you cancel the cheque by issuing a stop cheque request at your bank. And really, next Friday seems like quite a lot of time. Tell them that its simply unacceptable and you would like your notebook by Tuesday, at max.
Be firm, but polite and they will help you out even more. I was very polite everytime I spoke to them but I also let them know my problems, if I had any. And was firm that they had to sort it out and make sure that I got the system asap.
Btw, do you put the stars (****) yourself or does this forum auto-moderate bad language? -
****
i just typed kcuf backwrds ...
so its auto moderation indeed..cooool -
I think all you need to do is put in the Cheque as payable to "Dell India Pvt. Ltd." and that is what the quotation says as well (at the bottom).... What did you put it as Silas ?
-
What is a location on a cheque? -
Hmm I dunno dude.... What did they ask the location must be given as - Bangalore ?
And BTW my cheque got cleared today..... Also did your cheque got cleared or not ? Because if it had got cleared then the amount would have already got transferred to them right and they cant put it on hold right ? -
No idea what a location could be, but outstation cheques take longer to clear. No reason why it shouldn't have cleared by now, though
Have you checked your account? Is your money still there? If the cheque has been cashed then no way can they take this long. -
Yeah I agree outstation cheques take a little longer to clear but usually what they do is clear these cheques at the city nearest to a DELL office so that they can avoid outstation cheque charges incurred for the cheque.... And most of the times only after the cheque gets cleared further processing of the order will take place....
PS: Posting at 4 AM in the morning heh Phoenix ? -
lol yeah, I don't sleep early. Plus, my media center comp died and I was fixing it.
I would have gone mad if I had to wait that long for my laptop to arrive. Btw, anyone played Bioshock? It's creepy.
EDIT: I JUST received a package from Dell. It contains the free things I was offered when my order was delayed. Basically, a nice looking Dell bag. And a ram upgrade. The problem is, that they sent me a 1GB stick. Which is obvious because a 2GB is very expensive. Now, I have 3GB but in 1GB stick sizes. I'll be calling them up on Monday and asking them if they can take 2 sticks back (2x1GB) and give me one 2GB instead. Hope it works.
If it doesn't, then I guess I'll just sell it off. -
-
Thats actually what I asked them. The cust service has no clue about the cost of a 2GB stick. When they say ram upgrade, they actually mean 1GB ram. So when she saw that I already had 2GB, she got confused and got a tech on the line.
Well, I spoke to him. He was quite frankly, confused and bewildered that I had been offered a ram upgrade. He told me there are only 2 DIMM slots. I said I know, so just take my 1GB back and get a 2GB. He said that he is not from customer service, so he doesn't know what has been promised to me. But for my upgrade, yeah, that is the way to do it. Then he told the cust service person to try and get me a 2gb.
I could tell that he was incredulous in the way he said it, because a 2GB stick is obviously quite expensive.
Well, having no clue at all, the CS rep sent the request for 2GB. And I got 1GB.
So tomorrow I call and ask if its possible to exchange 2x1GB sticks for a 2GB stick. Although, I am not counting on it. Dell may be generous, but they aren't THAT generous. A 3GB upgrade costs Rs. 15000 on the configurator. Even from a 2GB, the upgrade is about Rs. 11,000. -
hey guys, Dell swiped my CC on Friday, but no word from them after that!!
what should i do? -
-
Heck!
They credit back again? They did not do it for me... must just wait and watch... they are crazy! -
Hmm mask I guess we both have got the same EDD heh
-
mask: Have you received the order confirmation? If you have received that, then there is nothing to worry about. If you haven't, just call up your CSR and tell him/her to send it right NOW.
-
yeah phoenix, got it. The CSR told me while taking the CC on Friday that she would send the order in an hour or two... had to bug her in the morning to get that!!
@Ash, lets race to the finish -
Also, my DD has reached them, and they said the invoice will be released today, and probably shipped today as well (or tomorrow morning). So by Wednesday morning, I will have my Inspiron 1720 by all means (chances are, maybe tomorrow evening)!
**** me, a 40 days wait! -
LOL, well I am happy for you
At least finally now you are getting the machine.
About the ram thing, I tried calling today but the person I have been speaking to was not in. I'll call tomorrow and see what I can do about the ram issue.
I hope I get it -
Mine is in the 2nd Stage in the Order Status Page saying : Work In Progress right from September 12th which is almost a week now.... So how long will it roughly take for the Order to move to the next stage namely Manufacturing Build Complete ?
-
