mask, format, and start from scratch. Windows Vista will guide you in the process. You can make as many partitions as you like, with sizes of your choice a well. It will remove all the DELL **** like QuickSet etc.

    Am I going overboard?
1> I'm choosing XPS1300 over Insp1400 series cause 13.3 in Screen is really very portable
    2> Specs are:
Core 2 Duo T7300 - Because of the 4 GB Cache
    2 GB RAM
    128 MB Nvida
    LED Disp
Costing 84 K with Taxes etc

Don't let them charge you for VAT. And choose the Wireless N card, instead of the A/G card.

Other than that, very good choice :)

As for partitions, when I was using Dell's setup, I had resized my primary to make it smaller. But that didn't let me make another one. So I deleted the MediaDirect partition and then tried and it worked. However, its not an optimal solution for everyone.

If you want to learn how to save MediaDirect and partition, you may have to reformat. Try flamenko's Dell Clean Install Guide. flamenko is a user on this forum.

Btw, Partition Magic is incompatible with Vista. You may screw things up bad if you try and use that.

Hi mask. When I received my laptop, I turned it on, and checked if it worked properly. Then, after 10 minutes or so of receiving it, I formatted it. Yes, DELL provides a DVD with all the drivers that you'll need.

Yes, it will. Your machine is a brand new one, so I don't think there'll be any data of yours on it.

Do it yourself. What's the worse that will happen? It'll take a few hours more, but at least you'll learn something for the future. It is how I learnt how to format and install XP, and now Vista.

Hmm that is for WWAN or something like that dont know for sure.... If you have the DOS version of bootable partition magic you can very well use it also instead of trying it from Vista.... Installing MediaDirect will be little bit confusing but flamenko's guide is good enough for that....

And btw my order still shows as not delivered even when it was delivered around 10 days back.... :D

    Heres a thought:

Is buying a T7250 or less with 2 GB L2 cache better or spend a few K's extra for the 4 GB T7300?

(Once u have tried the 4 GB L2 ......you will be p permanent "convert"

I bargained this morning with the Dell guy.... he cut down the VAT Figure..... something that was costing me 87 K came down to 84 K (appx).

What a bummer they dont offer WIFI "n" as an option... nor do they offer a fingerprint reader :-(

That is way too costly dude.... Do you know that you can configure your system online on www.dell.co.in ? I tried with the config you had mentioned in the previous page and it came to just Rs 73,354.00 without the Belkin carry bag.... Also paying 5000 bucks extra for a slim lightweight WLED display aint worhty.... And you can choose the option of No VAT even on the internet....

So try configuring your system on the net instead and check the prices..... 84k is too much costly for a laptop dude.....

YES u r right ... It came far cheaper at 74 K---- BUT with1 yr "completeCover" and Warrenty.

I wanted 2 years "Insurance" and Warrenty...... That is what really bumped up the price....

Plus.... why no go with the LED monitors? .... I have personny wsed one before and really like the thickness, weight and power consumption...

you were right....They needel little persuation to remove the VAT....The original "Quote" from www.dell.co.in was Rs. 87009.52 ... then Rs. 83889.52 AND Finally Rs. 80663.00.

PLUS... they seem very reluctant to offer any discounts on XPS... while talking they were more than happy to "give" 12 % discount AND "no VAT" on other line ups.... But the answer was a "NO" for XPS.... I really had to convine the guy about the stict 76 to 80 K budget... took me 3 days .... but i guess it was worth it.....
Frankly, the guys at Dell (sales) are pretty knowledgeable.... He had the competitions specs learnt "by heart" .... u really cant "fool" them.... but once they "understand" ur companys budget allowances ... they try their best to accomodate you....
So,.... bet not to bargain in "Rs" terms.... give them ur "strict" budget and "specs"... ask them to come up with a solution....
Say for e.g., u want a 200 gig HDD but ur budget permits 160 gid.... DONT give them 200 gig spc and ask for a discount.... rather ask for a quote for 160 gig and ask them to bump up the spc to 200 gb for u to consider the purchase...... SAVE the VAT arguement for the last (icing on the cake)..... the are pretty comfy with letting go of the VAT....
Last, rem.... never go for the 1st or 2nd offer.... If u r "phone shy" ... simply write a mail.... explain that u want the product dearly ...but budget permitting.....
Hey.... even those guys at dell are human.... they understand.... talk or write in a friendly manner.... He / She on the other side is not ENEMY No 1.... try to work together to come up with a workable solution...

IF ALL ELSE FAILS.... try 2 quotes of the same product on 2 diff days (1 day apart) ... you get the chance to bargain with 2 diff ppl.....

Finally... all Sales ppl have "Targets".... to be ment by the end of the month..... Try to bargain on the 13 or 14 of the month and then on 29 or 30 of the month.....Get it?

    Ha Ha

    Enjoy !!!!!

Actually for the Indian prices you can extend the warranty much cheaper after every year or so rather than getting a complete 2 year....

The thinner screen is actually a personal choice.... I dont mind having a slightly heavy laptop actually and so I said so.... You can invest that extra amount in something else more useful if you ask me like a higher processor or even get extra RAM outside at a cheaper price than what DELL is offering, an USB tv tuner or something like that.....

The best thing is put together your configuration online where you can choose to waive off the VAT.... You will be asked to provide your contact number and an email will be sent to you with the config and everything.... Then the DELL customer care guy would call - that time you can bargain.....

As soon as u mention the "L" word (Lenovo) ... they seem to get pretty upset.... ditto with Toshiba, LG and Sony .... in that order....

BEST POLICY..... reaserach online... get hold of the specs of a similar model ----> Tell them they r givig u a hefty dic (Imagination).... and u r on your way...

I just came home today and checked out my laptop.... Wow it is much bigger for a 15.4" than what I had in mind especially the screen..... I got an AUO screen but I do not notice any sort of grainness.... The picture is clear but lacks sharpness to a small extent but is only visible only if you concentrate hard and look...

And this is the first time I'm using Vista and a wonderful experience for me.... The system is blazingly fast and I ran NFS carbon with antivirus and stuff - still the game was smooth (I had to turn off AA to make it a lil bit more smoother tough)....

Can I open up the laptop as soon as I receive it? OR do i have to wait for the dell technician to arrive.... or ring them up before I open it up?
FINALLY, do I need to open up the pack to check for damage bEFORE I sign the receipt?
    Thanx.

It is being said that from Q4 of 2007 assembly of laptops also will be undertaken in Dell's Chennai plant. Right now the Chennai plant just ships out Desktops. I placed an order for a Vostro Desktop a few days ago and delivery time was said as 2 weeks. Are Dell Desktops being delivered from Chennai plant ? I ask this because their Order Status shows them as being shipped from Malaysia.

    Hmmm....
1> Whats the facination with 2.2 GHZ? ---practically no diff between T7300 (2.0 ghz) and T7500 (2.2 ghz) both have 4 B L2 cache.
2>Go for Dell Care 1 yr Plan.... increase the warrenty and insurance by the end of the 1st year (ask the dell Sales Guy)
3>When u pay for Dell Cate....its unlike any HP or Lenovo plan....."you can literally "drop" the laptop and ask the for free repair"..... can u do that with any other brand? .... guess not.....
4> I'm very sceptical if HP dv 9500 t has the 2.2 ghz santa rosapecs "at Dell prices".... check the facts out...

    Regards. Hope this helps.

(PLUS what abiut the graphics card? .... no use getting such fast processors if you do not support it with a decent graphics card).

Nope..... not Chennai at the moment.....Its Malaysia......

(You can confirm it later when the package arrives...... it will probably have Mal stickers and Indian Custom Clearance stickers too...)

    But.... does it really matter?

    >> But.... does it really matter?

Sure, it will be shipped much faster. And will end up being a bit cheaper.

So what is going on at the Dell Chennai Plant ? Is it just catering to business customers ?

And when can we expect stuff to be shipped from Chennai instead of Malaysia ?

Currently DELL Chennai plant is building only Desktop PCs but by December or so they should get the laptop division started as well - this is the inside news I got so far....

i thought about waiting... but then...had second thoughts, finally took the plunge as I found the rates are no different from the ones on US site, atleast for the base model i have.

and it should be cheaper then. with no import duty!
